A BRIEF HISTORY OF

CRYSTAL PALACE

WORD OF MOUTH MAGAZINE | SALES@WOMMAGA Z I N E . C O . U K | 7

Named after The Crystal Palace originally built in 1851 (a majestic glass and iron structure finished for The Great Exhibition in Hyde Park), Crystal Palace Park now homes

the remnants of the moved and reconstructed Penge Palace.

With the palace and its grounds becoming a hub for entertainment, education and even sporting events (20 F.A. Cup Finals were held there from 1895-1914), its damage on multiple occasions – including strong winds and fires – has since seen the site become a

major London public park.In 1954, the same year as The Crystal

Palace was moved and became Penge Palace, a train station was built in the area along with new terraced housing surrounding the park grounds.

Today, Crystal Palace area spans five boroughs: Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. Home to a thriving business and residential community, a patch dubbed the “Crystal Palace Triangle” (consisting of Westow Street, Westow Hill and Church Road) boasts a lively atmosphere and features an eclectic mix of Victorian and contemporary housing styles.

BEAT BACK TO WORK BLUES

BEAT BACK TO WORK BLUES

We might live in a temperate city – amazing as it is, London very rarely rings true in boasting all four seasons in a clear cut way – but now that summer’s almost over, the itch for a holiday has never been greater! If you’ve been lucky enough to have been on an exotic escape (or two), you’ll know there’s nothing trickier than touching down at Heathrow yet again with nothing but exaggerated black cab fares and miles of traffic to mentally cope with. Not only that, but you’ll have to beat the jetlag and drag yourself back to work too! While some feel refreshed and return to work clear headed and happy, others are certainly dreading the inevitable ease into what feels like a monotonous work-life routine. Depending on the pressure and level of tension felt within the work environment, coming back to “real life” can be a challenge in itself.

To help soften the tiredness that comes with bringing home the bacon once more, we’ve rustled up some tried and tested methods that’ll see you through until the festive season begins!

Work to live, don’t live to work – make this your mantra and not only will your

day-to-day experience vastly improve, you might actually surprise yourself by beginning to enjoy your everyday work tasks, however big or small they may be! After all, sometimes a job is – quite literally – just a job; not the be-all or end-all.

Make plans outside of work for the evenings, the weekend and even your lunch breaks. Falling into a routine of home then work, work then home is easy but by breaking up habitual tendencies, you have something to look forward to and feel much more stimulated as a result.

Understandably, not everyone has the luxury of having a job with sociable hours. For night shift workers and those in hospitality for instance, long working hours and a frequently rotating schedule can leave you exhausted and in need of good rest. If going out is simply too much to bear, have friends and loved ones come to you or even better, maintain a tidy home sanctuary in which you keep to yourself! This could be a room, your sleeping area or even a comfortable armchair.

LIVE IN SOUTH LONDON

Whether you’re new to London or have made the decision to move boroughs, finding the right neighbourhood has its own set of challenges. To make the decision making process just a tad easier, we’ve lined up some of the best places to set up home in South London. From lively locales to stress-free suburbia, life south of the river offers plenty to working professionals, families and students alike!

Brixton – With property and rental prices in Shoreditch getting steeper by the minute, London’s hip creatives have migrated south to Brixton. Packing a whole load of bang for your buck if you go down the Help to Buy route, first-time homeowners can revel in grabbing a good deal given Brixton’s numerous links to not only central London but to the rest of South London too. Home cooks can stock up on fresh fruit and veg from Brixton Market while bars and clubs hosting all-night events will sate even the most hard core party goers.

Crystal Palace – Yet another area which has seen a

sudden influx of families and young professionals in recent years, Crystal Palace’s ascent to becoming one of South London’s best neighbourhoods stems from its spacious Victorian properties, the National Sports Centre and of course, Crystal Palace Park.

Peckham – Undergoing regeneration, Peckham has become a popular choice for investment by property developers; first-time home buyers are spoilt for choice with plenty of new-build apartments in this increasingly trendy area.

East Dulwich – With yummy mummies roaming the streets [with pushchairs] by day and young professionals taking to Lordship Lane by night, this leafy residential hub is a kitsch and out-of-the-way sanctuary for anyone needing some serious rest and relaxation on their days off. Just down the road from Dulwich with train links to London Bridge via Peckham Rye, this trendy neighbourhood boasts everything you’d require within walking distance; we’re talking Sainsbury’s superstore, GP practice, schools, library, bars, cafes and boutiques!

HAWTHORNHealing Teas

But just how and why is tea so good for us, exactly? Surely consuming vast quantities of sugar throughout the day (all those teaspoons do add up!) can’t be THAT beneficial? Luckily, English Breakfast tea is simply black tea and even with the milk and sugar, research has shown that it might not only slow or prevent the growth of cancerous cells but improve artery health too.

In this issue however, we’ve looked into hawthorn tea. With the origins of hawthorn berries stemming from within the continent, the berries are mostly used for their medicinal qualities in Austria, Germany, Switzerland and of course the UK.

Rich in vitamins and antioxidants, hawthorn berries – as well as the tree’s leaves and flowers – can indeed create a potent healing brew. Often used as a heart tonic, hawthorn tea is believed to improve cardiovascular function through increasing oxygen and blood supply to the heart, thereby aiding a person’s overall blood circulation. Additionally, it’s also helpful for those with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. By drinking hawthorn tea, levels of clogging

or inflammation within the arteries are reduced; once again strengthening your blood flow.

For women who are experiencing menopause related hot flashes, hawthorn tea has been known to ease discomfort and even smooth over the occurrence of sudden episodes!

Mostly, tea serves as a fallback for relaxation and in this respect, hawthorn does not disappoint! Calming nerves and keeping anxiety at bay, hawthorn tea works wonders by relaxing its drinkers without the dreaded sleep inducing feeling they might experience from other teas.

As for what active compounds are at work when you consume hawthorn tea, the plant and berries are rich in vitamin C (prefect for those keen on improving their immune systems) and contains vitamin A and some B vitamins. Magnesium and potassium are also present.

Keen on giving hawthorn tea a try? Find it in your local health store such as Holland & Barrett!

With or without ever really looking into it, we all know that drinking tea is good for us. Whether it’s a

morning cuppa with milk and two sugars or enjoying a cool, ginseng tea on a hot summer’s day, we’ve all been programmed to understand that tea, more so than any

other hot beverage, offers a healing touch in more ways than one.

FOOD TRENDS

Top 5By Lily Niu

Page 17: Word of Mouth Magazine Summer Edition

STREET FOODWhen travelling, street food is an affordable way to sample the delights of local cuisine that even residents frequently enjoy after a day’s hard work. Here in London, Street Feast and other street food markets are a fun but overpriced social experience more centred on cramming as many #instafood posts on your friends’ social feeds than anything else. If only this realisation actually impacted our desire to go...

BRINNERBrinner, as in breakfast for dinner, has long been an unofficial feasting upon tasty brunch dishes well past its intended consumption. Now, huevos rancheros, frittatas and even full English breakfasts are slowly making their way to dinner tables everywhere.

WAFFLES:“This’ll be fun. We’ll stay up late, swapping manly stories and in the morning…I’m making waffles!” said Donkey to Shrek. There aren’t many who wouldn’t be tempted by the thought of waffles after a viewing of Shrek and luckily, Duck & Waffle on the 40th floor of Heron Tower is open 24/7 for, you’ve guessed it, duck and waffle! Kensington’s Dirty Bones deserves a well-earned mention for its chicken and waffles dish…complete with REAL maple syrup.

FERMENTED FOODSOne word: kimchi. This fermented vegetable

dish from Korea (eaten at breakfast, lunch and dinner) has been creeping its way into mainstream Western diets. With appreciation for European staple sauerkraut generally on the increase – fermented Kefir and cabbage etc. – it looks like this health food trend might stick around for some time.

BURGERSBurgers – they’re everywhere. From scoffing down a McDonald’s Big Mac to having them medium rare at your local Byron – who proudly make, as they put it, “proper hamburgers” – these bad babies have taken over the hearts and minds of self-proclaimed foodies. Just when you think there can’t be any more to it (a burger, that is), Tommy Updegrove announces he’s to partake in Dalston’s Mr Hyde National Burger Day Event on August 27. His PYT – Pick Your Topping – introduces “American carnival food” to London’s burger lovers, allowing them to try burgers made from doughnuts, deep-fried pizzas and breakfast cereal. Looks like a new breed of burgers could be here to stay!

Another two 24 hour tube strikes may be dulling the mood for Londoners everywhere but thankfully, they won’t be impacting the eagerly anticipated August bank holiday weekend (we hope!). Being treated to an entire THREE days off without striking out a day’s holiday from your precious annual allowance can feel like an absolute dream – so don’t waste it! To help make the most of your time off, here are a few suggestions of what you, including your nearest and dearest, can take advantage of around our capital…NOTTING HILL CARNIVAL – If you’ve never been, this is a must-go. A true Londoner has been to this annual street festival celebrating the Caribbean community and culture AT LEAST once. Held on Sunday 30th August through Monday 31st, make sure you check in for scrumptious Caribbean street food, hot carnival sounds (Mas, pan and calypso bands will have you dancing ‘til the early hours) and of course, plenty of floats and costumes!

SOUTH WEST FOUR – From Saturday 29th to Sunday 30th, Clapham Common will see the return of this epic dance music festival. Boasting super-club sounds from Basement Jaxx, Skrillex, Fatboy Slim, Hot Since 82 and more, prepare to spend your bank holiday basking in the delights of hot beats upon the green in one of London’s most up-and-coming neighbourhoods.

FULL OF SPICE FESTIVAL AT KEW GARDENS – Perfect for a family day out, Kew Garden’s Full of Spice festival draws visitors’ attention back to the origin of popular as well as exotic spices. Enjoy trave-lling around the gardens in makeshift rickshaws, creating your very own spice, learn the fascinating his-tory behind turmeric and saffron, and of course, tasting spiced delicacies from a pop-up bread kitchen and street food vans.

THE LINE – A must-go for lovers of art and sight-seeing, The Line is a new sculptural trail leading those on the walk from the O2 to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Along the way, take in the works of Damien Hirst, Eduardo Paolozzi and Martin Creed. Kicking off from 12pm every day, this is a free event born from a crowdfunding campaign which will see additional works by artists installed.
