Welcome to Hope’s Newest Members Edward and Vidaline Akumaning

They have been attending Hope for over a year and

are involved with our youth ministry, as well as

volunteering in other areas at Hope. They are originally

    from Ghana.

Katie and Casey Korejwo, and Their Three Sons:

    Jack (7), Owen (4) and Connor (2).

They were looking for a forever church for their

family. Hope has become that place for them. Their boys are already active in the children's program with

Miss Kate and also attend PDO. Their kids refer to

    Hope as "the fun church.”

    Mike and Sandi Miyaki

They transferred to Hope UMC after 28 years as

members at St. Luke’s UMC in Highlands Ranch. Mike

served in St. Luke’s children’s nursery for almost 20

years, and Sandi was on trustees for almost 20

years. They are currently enjoying their new home in SE Aurora. Please keep them in your prayers as Sandi was

recently diagnosed with cancer and continues to

    undergo treatment.

  • A Message from Pastor Claire “These special holidays give rise to various liturgical calendars that suggest we should mark our days not only with the cycles of the moon and seasons, but also with occasions to tell our children the stories of our faith community's

past so that this past will have a future, and so that our ancient way and its practices will be rediscovered and renewed every year.”

― Brian D. McLaren, Finding Our Way Again: The Return of the Ancient Practices I must admit that the season of Lent has grown on me and is now the most critical part of my spiritual life. Early in my ministry, it had little impact on me. Then, in my 20’s, my father was on Hospice care and died during the 6 weeks of Lent. He was placed on Hospice care two days before Ash Wednesday and subsequently died during Holy Week. That year I happened to be in Seminary. I lamented to a friend that I had not given anything up during Lent and was failing miserably at the season. She gently reminded me that I was in fact giving something up: my father. I have seen Lent differently ever since. It’s a season of spiritual cleansing, a reminder of our mortality, our bent toward sin and a reminder of just how fragile life really is. Each year, I find that it is more and more poignant in my life. I now look forward to this season of spiritual cleansing. It is also life changing, if I am disciplined enough to do the work. The liturgical season of Lent is modeled after our understanding that right after he was baptized, Jesus was driven into the wilderness where he fasted and prayed for 40 days and 40 nights. This becomes one of the earliest models for us to begin our Lenten journey. On the United Methodist website, it describes Lent in this way: Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday.

Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten, which means "spring." The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.

Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their

relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others. Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a "mini-Easter" and the reverent

spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection. Lent is a season to literally “turn around” and realign our lives and focus toward God. It is a time to give up things as well as take on new life-giving practices, helping us rid ourselves of distractions and our own selfish desires. By doing so, we seek to live and love as more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ. This year for Lent, Hope will be providing several opportunities to make your Lent a more meaningful season in your journey of faith. Here are some ways that I hope you will consider joining:

Ash Wednesday Worship & Imposition of Ashes: Come begin your Lenten journey with a reflective and meaningful service. Ash Wednesday worship services will be held at 12:00 and 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, 2019. Brown Bag Lunch Bible Study with Pastor Claire: Starting Thursday, March 7, meet Pastor Claire in the library at 12:00 p.m. to discuss the scripture and sermon for the week ahead. Wednesday Soup Suppers & Lenten Speakers: Starting Wednesday, March 13, we hope you will join us in learning more about Hope’s annual theme, Year of the Child through our Soup Supper Speaker Series and participating in fellowship with one another through our weekly soup suppers. Soup suppers will take place from 5:50-6:30 p.m. followed by speakers in the sanctuary from 6:45-7:30 p.m. Easter Egg Hunt: Children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors are invited to attend our annual Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 13 from 9:30-11:00 a.m.

Good Friday Worship: “A Service of Darkness.” Join the choir for a profound musical presentation for our Good Friday service on Friday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. A Good Friday Soup supper will be served at 5:30 p.m. prior to worship. Invite your friends! Easter Worship: A complete Easter worship service will be offered at 8:30 and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2019.

Each Sunday in Lent I will be preaching on the 7 Last Words of Jesus. I know that each Sunday will be meaningful and offer a glimpse into the way the Lenten journey shapes and informs your faith. Whatever you decide to do, it is my hope that you will make this Lenten journey not only meaningful but also you will find ways to “turn around” and realign your life with more life-giving practices. See you in church,

  • Youth Update In January, our Youth headed out to Treasure Trunk, a

community thrift store, which supports those dealing with

homelessness and domestic violence. Our Youth helped to sort

and stock the shelves, vacuum, and even purchased a few items!

If you are at all interested in learning more, visit their website at www.thefamilytree.org. Our Youth enjoyed the trip, and we will

    definitely be back!

In February we had time for fellowship enjoying a Super Bowl

party filled with food & games. Spending the evening laughing and

building relationships. The Middle School Sunday School has started a bible study called Echo helping us dive deeper into some

of the most told stories of the bible and how we can make those

stories relatable to our daily lives. The service work we have been

doing around the community has enhanced our lives and let us

shine God’s love in our wonderful world.

    Youth Sunday

Sunday March 3rd is Youth Sunday & Auction, we are looking forward to stepping up and leading worship. The funds we raise at the auction will used to make the 2019 Hope Youth

    Mission Trips happen.

Summer Mission Trips The youth have a summer of service planned, the International Mission Trip: June 9-15 to Puerto Rico We will help address poverty by partnering

with local organizations and see firsthand what it looks like to do community

development in an area that has survived a major natural disaster. Our

second Mission Trip: July 7-12 to Wind River, WY We will serve by painting

and weatherizing homes in partnership with tribal housing authorities, running Kids Club programming for local children, and spending time with

elderly residents. For both trips we will be partnering with Youth Works a

Christ-centered company that has been coordinating mission trips for more

than 20,000 teenagers and adult leaders in over 45 communities across the

U.S. and beyond. They believe that these kinds of mission trip experiences

positively impact the communities they partner with, the teenagers who are stretched and challenged through a week of service, and the adult leaders who

build mission trips into the ongoing discipleship of their teenagers.

If your child would like to participate one or both trips please reach out

to Stacey Hilzer at [email protected]

Confirmation Our 2019 Confirmation class kicked off in January with seven youth participating! Every two weeks, our

confirmands meet to discuss various aspects of their faith journey and what it means to be part of the United

Methodist faith community. Coming up, we have the Faith Fair on Sunday, April 7, where our confirmands will

share their own explorations with the wider congregation. We hope you can join us between and after services to

see their presentations! On Saturday, April 13, there will be a special dinner for our confirmands and their

families to celebrate this confirmation journey. All of this will be leading up to Confirmation Sunday on April 28, where we will recognize our confirmands and celebrate their next steps. Join us at the 10:00 a.m. worship service

    for this special moment!

  • Unexpected Conversations with Teenagers Written by Charlie Ledbetter

Hope’s own Charlie Ledbetter has written a memoir of his thirty-three years of teaching the

senior high Sunday school class. The author will be available to autograph print copies of

his book on two Sundays: March 3, to coincide with the Youth Auction and April 7, to

coincide with the Youth Faith Fair. For each print copy sold at $14.99, Charlie will donate

    $5 to Hope’s Youth Ministries.

This honest, relatable, and sometimes comic tale of teens becoming adults provides a

thoughtful meditation for anyone interested in youth and the challenges of their spiritual

development. Enjoy this book on faith, fortitude, and fun as the author negotiates the rocky

paths of teenagers on their spiritual journeys.

  • Good Friday Tenebrae Service A Service in Darkness

On Good Friday, April 19, 2019 at 7:00 p.m., Hope will be holding a

Tenebrae service. The word "Tenebrae" comes from the Latin meaning

"darkness” or “shadows." The Tenebrae is an ancient Christian Good Friday

service, dating from the 8th century, that makes use of gradually

diminishing light through the extinguishing of candles or lights. This

increasing darkness symbolizes the approaching darkness of Jesus' death and of hopelessness in the world without God. The service concludes in

complete darkness. The Hope Chancel Choir will present Dale Wood’s A Service of Darkness during the service. It is a meditative and moving work written in 1962 and provides meditations on the seven last words of

    Christ.

Pastor Claire’s Lenten Sermon Series During Lent, Pastor Claire will be preaching on the 7 Last Words. Please consider using the poetry below as

    meditations on her sermons.

“Father, forgive them: for they know not what they do.” Luke 22:34

O Come and Mourn with Me Awhile F.W. Faber (1814-63) O come and mourn with me awhile; O come now to the Saviour's side; O come, together let us mourn: Jesus, our Love, is crucified. Have we shed no tears to shed for him, while soldiers scoff and foes deride? Look how patiently he hangs: Jesus, our Love, is crucified. Seven times he spoke, seven words of love; and all three hours his silence cried for mercy on the souls of all; Jesus, our Love, is crucified. O love of God! O sin of man! In this dread act your strength is tried; and victory remains with love: Jesus, our Love, is crucified.

“Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Luke 23:43

Hear Us, Holy Jesus Thomas Benson Pollock (1836-96) Jesus, pitying the sighs Of the thief, who near Thee dies, Promising him paradise; Hear us, Holy Jesus. May we, in our guilt and shame, Still Thy love and mercy claim, Calling humbly on Thy name: Hear us, Holy Jesus. May our hearts to Thee incline, Looking from our cross to Thine; Cheer our souls with hope divine: Hear us, Holy Jesus.

“Woman, behold thy son! Behold thy mother!” John 91: 26, 27

At the Cross, Her Station Keeping 13th Century Text At the cross her station keeping stood the mournful Mother weeping, where he hung, the dying Lord; for her soul, of joy bereavèd, bowed with anguish, deeply grieved, felt the sharp and piercing sword.

    HOPE UMC

    2019

  • O how sad and sore distressèd now was she, that Mother blessèd of the sole-begotten one! Deep the woe of her affliction, when she saw the crucifixion of her ever-glorious Son. Jesus, may her deep devotion Stir in me the same emotion, Fount of love, Redeemer kind, That my heart, fresh ardor gaining And a purer love attaining, May with Thee acceptance find.

“My God my God, why hast thou forsaken me?” Matt. 27:46

Bound Upon the Accursed Tree Dean Milman (1791-1868) Bound upon the accursèd tree, Faint and bleeding, who is He? By the eyes so pale and dim, Streaming blood, and writhing limb, By the flesh with scourges torn, By the crown of twisted thorn, By the side so deeply pierced, By the baffled, burning thirst, Bound upon the accursèd tree, Dread and awful, who is He? By the sun at noonday pale, Shivering rocks, and rending veil, Lo! Beneath the blackened sky, Hear His last and bitter cry. Crucified, we know Thee now: Son of God! ‘tis Thou! ‘tis Thou!

    “I thirst.” John 19:28

Jesus, In Thy Thirst and Pain Thomas Benson Pollock (1836-96) Jesus, in Thy thirst and pain, While Thy wounds Thy life-blood drain, Thirsting more our love to gain: Thirst for us in mercy still, All Thy holy work fulfil, Satisfy Thy loving will: May we thirst Thy love to know; Lead us in our sin and woe Where the healing waters flow:

    “It is finished.” John 19:30

O Perfect Life of Love Henry Williams Baker (1831-77) O perfect life of love! All, all, is finished now, All that He left His throne above To do for us below! No pain that we can share But He has felt its smart; All forms of human grief and care Have pierced that tender heart. In perfect love He dies for me! O all atoning Sacrifice, I cling by faith to Thee.

“Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit.” Luke 23:46

Behold the Lamb of God Dale Wood Behold the lamb of God, Bowed down in bitter pain; To God His dying prayer ascends. In death, my Lord and Saviour may I cry with Thee: “My Father I commend my Spirit into Thy loving hands.” I die in Thee.

    Consider “Tithing” Your Will

    Every year many Americans die

    without a valid Last Will

& Testament. For the past three

decades the numbers hover between 70 and 80%. This

    statistic is surprising since a

    carefully prepared Will can

    minimize costs related to settling

    an estate.

Having a Last Will & Testament

    ensures your estate follows your

    wishes. Some consider a pledge

or ‘tithe’ to their church as part

of one’s estate planning. Each of us can make a gift or bequest to our endowment fund to

strengthen Hope United Methodist Church for future

generations. Our endowment fund is permanent, we only

use the interest or earnings to further Hope’s mission and

purpose. We never spend the principal. Please consider

remembering Hope in your estate planning. For more information, contact Charlie Ledbetter, Chair – Hope UMC

    Endowment Committee.
