Happy New Year!

As many of you know, I love the colder weather. I love the snow and the winter season. I love the holy days that we celebrate and the festive and giving spirits that define the season. What I don’t like, however, is the darkness of the days. It is hard to get used to living in darkness more than living in the light. In 2017, darkness will dominate our days until March 17 when we finally have more hours in the day that are filled with light rather than darkness.

The season of Epiphany in January and February is God’s way of reminding us that we are not meant to live in darkness. This is the season of light and we are reminded that Jesus is the light of the world. Remember, it was a bright star in the dark sky that led the magi to the Christ-child. Even if when we live in dark-ness, God provides us with a light that leads us into new seasons of love and joy.

As you make your New Year resolutions for 2017, invite the light of Christ into your life to guide your decisions and become the center of the transformation that you long for.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Don

Well, the Christmas season is over, but now we are in a new time of celebration, reflection, and anticipation. I love this time of the Christian year as we approach the season of Lent. This is a perfect time to join one of our music groups. We have room for more. Join us on Thursday evenings to participate in Chancel Choir & Chancel Bells. I am also looking for people to form a new contemporary band. I need guitar, bass, drums, and vocals, but if you play something else (woodwind, brass, string, etc.) let me know. Contact me at [email protected]. We also have plenty of room in our Children’s Choir, Youth Bells and youth band, Red Sea. I want to extend a very special thank you to some people who have given an unbelievable amount of time to our music department. Since my arrival at Hope, when I start choosing music for Sunday worship, I have to go through eight file cabinets filled with hundreds and hundreds of pieces of music. I’ve gotten pretty good at it, but it can be an arduous process at times. For at least the past five months, Nancy Duncan, Ronnie Villanueva, and Judy Saurteig have spent an unbelievable amount of free time to enter all of our music into a database. The database, set up by Nancy Duncan, is very comprehensive and includes: title, composer/arranger, voicings (unison, 2-part, SATB, etc.), themes (General, Christmas, Easter, Communion, etc.), related scripture, instru-mentations, publisher, and number of copies. I can now search for music using any or all of said parameters. This has been a goal of mine for many years, and I am so grateful for the efforts these wonderful members of Hope! The Music Worship Team will soon be accepting letters of application for the Clayton Hill III Music Scholarship. If you are a high school senior, graduate or older, and are pursuing an education in music, please write us a letter detailing your anticipated studies and what goals you have for music in your life. You can either email me at [email protected] or put your letter in a sealed envelope marked Music Worship Team: Hill Scholarship and put it in the Music Worship Team mailbox at church. - Robert Larson

An Unwavering Belief in The Land’s Promise

Some of my favorite memories involve growing, cooking, and sharing food. So when the idea to start The Land project began, I knew it was a cause I could get behind. Gathering people around food, faith, and farming is a wonderful way to celebrate life. It allows people to connect with nature on a spiritual level. Some will glean wisdom, some will be inspired ,and some will be entertained. Some will find sanctitude, some will find community, and some will find God. This connection to nature might feel different to each person, but everyone will find a special part of themselves that they didn’t know existed.

My unwavering belief in The Land’s promise stems from a spiritual experience, something that happened to me in second grade. My teacher, Mrs. Janson, asked us to save three pieces of trash from our lunch that day. I choose a banana peel, plastic straw and a cardboard milk container. After lunch, Mrs. Janson took us outside to bury our items in the school yard and mark them with popsicle sticks. Then we waited three months. When the day came to unearth our trash, we were excited. First I tried to dig up the milk container, but it had broken down into a clump of soil. I was blown away. Then I dug up the straw and it was entirely the same as when I buried it—in tact with a red and yellow stripe down the side. What a letdown. Then I tried to dig up my banana peel, but it was completely gone. I thought it was magic. Mrs. Janson had talked about decomposition and critters in the soil that could break down organic matter, but it really didn’t mean much to me until I unearthed my little plot of trash to witness nature’s magical abilities first hand. This life lesson taught me that it is important to connect with the land that surrounds you. This means tending to it in ways that mimic nature. This means building soil with mulch and compost; not synthetic fertilizers. This means sculpting it in ways that can capture rainwater and store it in the soil. I see great promise for The Land and I am excited to be part of something so special. I look forward to being part of a community that believes we should grow food in ways that work with Mother Nature; not against her. I hope you will join us! - Greg Laugenslader, Landscape Architect for The Land

Hope 2nd Annual Garage Sale

The second Hope annual garage sale has been set for Saturday, June 10. Although June 10 sounds like a long way off, it is not too early to start setting aside items that you no longer want or need. If your stack/pile becomes too large, you may want to consider renting a booth (parking space) for your own!

2 Corinthians 6:11-13 – “Dear, dear Corinthians, I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively! (The Message)

WELCOME TO THE BODY OF CHRIST!

As a community of faith we celebrate the fullness of God’s grace when it is remembered in the act of Holy Baptism. Our family of faith made room for two more in the last few months. We are honored to be on this journey of life and faith with you!

MONEY: MASTER OF IT OR MASTERED BY IT

We invite you to start the New Year off right by joining Jim, Joanie, and Chuck Calhoun for a 9-week session of the Financial Peace University. Financial Peace is the brainchild of Dave Ramsey who has taught millions of people how to gain financial independence in 9-weeks.

Wouldn't it be nice to no longer be a slave to your money? Wouldn't it be nice to, as Dave Ramsey says, “spend a short time living like nobody else, so you can be free to live like nobody else.”

The class will meet every Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Hope Church from February 4 – April 11. The cost is $110 and it will be the best $110 dollars you ever spend! To register or if you have questions, please contact Chuck Calhoun at [email protected].
