SCOPE: NEW CONSTRUCTION

Taking advantage of sweeping western views to the Olympics and Puget Sound, the DADU is to eventually serve as a primary living space for the owner, as well as a flexible trailer storage and social gathering space which becomes one and the same as the views and yard which open to the West.

Great care was taken to place the building in context with the neighborhood, while relating to the primary residence on site, a 1925 Dutch Colonial Revival. Subtle classical detailing is treated simply to hint at the contemporary and functional interior space.

Providing an intimate connection with the water in a modern cabin-like space was of the utmost concern for the client. The decision to not build up and to maintain a modest scale places the house boat squarely in the context of its neighbors. The final medley of materials, light and space provide an urban escape for the client that is inches from the water and minutes from the city.

This traditionally organized house had very separate and isolated spaces for living, cooking and gathering. The key concerns were providing a social connection to the kitchen, providing daylight with just 5 ft. between houses, and execute a contemporary idea of kitchen space use in a traditionally detailed home.

The elongated U layout is broken up by a small movable prep station, which allows the owners to adjust the space to their needs. The high clerestory windows steal daylight from otherwise wasted space, while being considerate of the neighbors privacy.

Alvar Aalto’s contribution towards the conversation about the possibilities of solid wood furniture construction resulted in a decades long conversation between furniture designers of the 20th century.

The goal of this studio project was to carry that dialogue into the 21st century and spark new discussions about how wood may be manipulated in concert with digital media to produce forms which speak at both a human and architectural scale.

The owners of the chair had acquired the piece years prior in a state of neglect, and never had the time to have it properly restored. All of the joints had loosened and the existing weave deteriorated.

Carl Hansen’s NYC branch was engaged for authenticity verification, as well as finish selection and process recommendations. The chair was broken down, cleaned, re-assembled, finished and given a proper Danish cord woven seat.

FOCUS: FULL RESIDENTIAL RE-BUILD HISTORICAL CODE COMPLIANCE ENERGY CONSERVATION PROJECT MANAGEMENT MATERIALS SALVAGE

The Zeller home had been unoccupied for upwards of 15 years. Its state of neglect and disrepair opened the door for a total re-build. A strong emphasis was placed on reduced energy usage, innovative design, and a healthy living environment, while preserving a link to the history of the home.

It was imperative to maintain the original facade of the Zeller house to provide a connection with the historic nature of Lewisburg. The freedom of a re-build of the interior allowed for creative use of open space with an focus on functional living design.

Original materials were preserved and accented when applicable. When blended with a simple palette of materials, they provide a tactile and visual connection to the history of the home and bring warmth to the open layout. Masonry, wood, and glass keep the house grounded in its current era while honoring its past.

FOCUS: ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY PROJECT MANAGEMENT SIPS/ HEAVY TIMBER CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS SALVAGE

As a 900 SF SIPS/Timber frame hybrid, the Skotedis cabin serves as a retreat for a local family from Lewisburg, PA. Both the SIPS and timbers came from local sources working in collaboration. This exceptionally well sealed home is heated solely with a gas assist fireplace during the cold Pennsylvania winters. It incorporates a fully rain screened siding and top vented roof assembly to allow for full visibility of the live-edge rafters in the living space.
