Dear reader,

The first edition of the magazine Circular Decorating of this year is a fact! This issue revolves around the theme of ‘working together’. It is important to mention this theme at the beginning of the new year. To work together with the common purpose of making the move to a circular economy on a wide scale.

The world around us is changing constantly and circular innovation plays an important part in that. In the last year, there was a lot of talk about it but much was done too. I am particularly pleased to give those who had the guts TO DO centre stage in this magazine. For example, Valley Crea-tors, and start-up PLANQ present their vision on circular economy and we explain why they make an important contribution to this transition. Since the publication of the last edition of Circular Decorating in 2016, a number of activities of which I am proud have already taken place. For example, we organised two knowledge sessions on circular procurement and circular architecture at Circular Valley, we presented the Circular Design Award 2016, and we developed a ‘value scan with natural resources passport’ for furniture. The latter makes the value of furniture more tangi-ble and transparent than ever before.

As a proactive participant of Valley I am already looking forward to eve-rything that will happen this year. And to meeting more and more active companies, knowledge institutes, creatives and start-ups to work together with. It is important to keep innovating, both within as well as outside of our own area of expertise. Working together pays off! On behalf of all the editors, I hope you will enjoy this edition of Circular Decorating. Michael KuiperDirector Desko

In a wider context, it has long sin-ce been crystal clear to us that the linear model (production, consump-tion, and disposal) will ultimately be unsustainable. The waste mountain is growing – we have no more room for it. But at the same time natural resources are becoming scarcer, and energy (for the time being) is not in-exhaustible. To ensure the availabili-ty of resources across the economy that provide for the human needs, we must make a move to a circular model in which we minimise new in-put (energy and natural resources) and minimise output from this cycle. This means to utilise existing assets optimally, or rather to preserve maxi-mum value at every stage. The ideal image is to have mini-

mal waste of natural resources and energy. Among others, this me-ans that we should see products as products, rather than as a natural resource: from a production- and consumption society to a utilisation society. Plus accompanying econo-mic changes, a shift in commercial activity, from production to mainte-nance of existing assets. Factories shrink or move to a model whereby they use their resources/machines for multiple purposes (like one of our suppliers is already doing). On the other hand, it also entails more employment opportunities in the maintenance/refurbishing industry. In our opinion, circular economy (CE) does not cause economic decline, but it does require a fundamentally

The linear (consumption) model is utter waste. Look at the natural resour-

ces, labour and energy it takes to produce new furniture – which subse-

quently ends up directly on the waste mountain following the introducti-

on of a new trend, refurbishment or move (after a maximum of 7 years).

“Our credo: Beat the waste mountain! Let’s work together to make sure the va-lue of what we have created will be used to its full potential.”

CE demands an integral approach. You cannot have it as an “add-on”. If you take over a used chair and sell it elsewhere, you can praise yourself and say you have contributed to CE. But who is to say the client will not dispose of it a year later regardless? If you really want to live by circular principles, and you want to be regar-ded as such, you must either con-trol or be able to oversee the who-le chain of operations. This requires more substantial adjustments in the management of for example the lo-gistic and administrative processes (We started doing this at a funda-mental level in 1952, when we intro-duced the registration of the place where used furniture was sold).

But the necessity of an integral ap-proach should not become an obsta-cle preventing its introduction. Des-ko explicitly underwrites the view that the best way to achieve and promote CE (ultimate condition for success) is by just doing it. Try it; see what works and what doesn’t, like we did. It is not until you run into difficul-ties that you can identify the issues and consider possible solutions to them. In the meantime, through CE projects that proved to be succes-sful, we demonstrate that CE is wor-kable – against (financial) conditions that are attractive for all.

Desko’s role in the circular economy

An important fact to understand Desko’s relationship with circulari-ty is that Desko is originally a rental company (events and office furnitu-re). We were increasingly asked by our customers whether they could purchase the furniture they had ren-

ted, new as well as used. Clients whose companies were growing and needed furniture fast, and in slower times could get rid of it again quickly – we tried to meet those demands by using flexible contracts, also in case of purchasing, that allowed them to return the furniture according to the proposed conditions. In a way, Des-ko has been working on circular inte-rior design since 1952 already.

The value of used furniture is what we have always been aware of. And this is also at the heart of the success of a circular economy, as a sustainable economically viable model to us and our clients. This has everything to do with residual value. The essence is to realise that a piece of furniture has an intrinsic practical- and economic value. A value, which after utilisation, you can either keep or discard. If you give the used asset an upgrade, then a small investment is worth its weight in gold. We translate the value so-mething has to us by presenting our clients with a very attractive residual value proposition for what we procu-re from them. As a rental/sales company we were in a unique position to do this – with the comprehensive “menu” of lease/

pay for use, rental, sales with buy-back (new and used). We had all the channels and logistic processes in place already (refurbishing, internal- as well as partner designers, our own means of transportation, warehouse,

Page 6: WORK TOGETHER · This issue revolves around the theme of ‘working together’. It is important to mention this theme at the beginning of the new year. To work together with the

and administrative resources) that enabled us to upgrade used furnitu-re in large volumes for reutilisation. Ever since our current director was appointed, circularity has been at the core of Desko’s company strategy.

Our incentives:To prevent the waste of existing va-lue. The speed at which companies depreciate furniture is reason en-ough for Desko to make the client actually aware of the existing value. How: among others, as a first step, by making a value scan with a natural re-sources passport of the existing value and, in doing so, to stimulate maxi-mum reuse.

To be unique in the market. And to dare to rely our natural strength. How: Among others, by buying back assets, also if they weren’t originally bought by Desko. We can establish a circular interior of any quality label, without being dependent on own production. This way, with our own procurement instrument, we give a boost to the CE of products and ser-vices in our market.

What? Sales and repurchase, ren-tal, storage, lease, refurbishing, preventative maintenance of office furniture. More specifically, we have launched our circular repurchase concept, the focal point of which is the triple repurchase programme whereby the lifespan is increased to 21 years which would otherwise have been 7 years. Together we look at the existing interior, the client can choose which circular approach they would like to implement. To buy, to lease or to rent, with a residual value that is guaranteed in advance. This way, we managed to realise an en-tirely circular interior. BAM wanted an innovative concept, and knew

that the existing furniture had a cer-tain value. We took an inventory of everything, distributed it across the departments, took back what was no longer used, refurbished the rest, and supplemented where necessary (including a maintenance contract, a guaranteed residual value of 15% of the purchase value, and a 15 years comprehensive warranty).

We see the supplier (ourselves) as a crucial as a pivotal point in a succes-sful circular economy. In the market, where the demand for used furniture is to originate; and to the manufactu-rer, who is to facilitate the possibili-ties for reuse at the front-end, and for recycling at the back-end. Coopera-tion at both sides is essential. But we see ourselves as the engine in that process. In the context of the integral approach as mentioned before, we strive to make our insight/influence on the chain of events as substantial as possible, both independently as well as in cooperation with other par-ties. This is also a requirement which enables us to provide our clients with the necessary guarantees and to maintain our business model. Cre-ating procurement- and sales chan-nels is an example of this.

For example, we have a stake in We Beat the Mountain, which gives an insight into the waste flows of orga-nisations, in order to manufacture them into 100% recycled and functi-onal products. We Beat the Mountain also has its own web shop for 100% recycled trendy/design products. We are also working on a partnership with thrift shops.

Furthermore, we launched the Circu-lar Design Lab in 2015, which we use to inspire circular design and innova-tion and we invest in the ideas from

“To make the client

actually aware of the

existing value.”

Page 7: WORK TOGETHER · This issue revolves around the theme of ‘working together’. It is important to mention this theme at the beginning of the new year. To work together with the

designers and students, who often don’t have the necessary budget for scaling-up.

Another example are the agree-ments we make with clients in advan-ce that they can return their furniture to us ‘against an attractive residual value’, combined with a thorough registration of the location of each individual piece of furniture. We also have agreements with manufactu-rers about for example the return of materials of depreciated products against a commitment of recycling.

The past 5 years for Desko have re-volved around the theme of on the one hand fine-tuning our own poli-cy, so that we can facilitate circular economy in our supplier’s role to its maximum potential, and on the other hand to promote circular eco-nomy and its possibilities to the out-side world, by creating awareness and through cooperation.

Concrete results:• We commissioned a calculation of what savings were made through our circular projects in the past 3 years. Circular projects: 130+; savings on environmental tax/emissions 40%; cost savings for clients: 27%; exchan-ge of furniture: 60%.

• We have achieved that at this time 99% of the used furniture that we ob-tain is reused and resold (with trac-

king!) in the second hand circuit. The 1% that is left concerns completely depreciated furniture that is recycled to raw materials in association with our partner AEB Amsterdam.

• Increase of 500% in projects that are actually circular – projects that have circularity as the objective, partly thanks to increase in (large) or-ganisations that have taken circular thinking more seriously and under-stand what it involves (partly thanks to our efforts).

• Average age of furniture that is (re)sold through us has increased to 21 years.

• Environmental impact per piece of furniture across its lifespan (3 times repurchase programme with reuse of used materials): -62% CO2-emis-sions, 61% decrease in antimony-eq. Study executed by Circle Economy, investigating the Duo workstation of used steel for this purpose.

Temperature is an annoyance for the working population of the Netherlands, which can have a negative impact on performance. The new way of working has led to the establishment of many open plan offices, ma-king it difficult to get the temperature right for everyone. It can be too cold for the one, and too warm for the other. This chair allows you to decide the right temperature for you. Desko’s mission is to decrease CO2-emission.

In the past few years I have worked on a national and international tran-sition towards a circular economy. By now we are aware of the opportuni-ties and understand the subtleties. It is now time for us to turn words into actions. We are ready for more con-crete, large-scale circular projects. Valley is an iconic project in itself, but the place where circular econo-my turns into reality is located in the areas of the built environment, logis-tics and horticulture.

You can design the procurement of a circular interior in multiple ways. The usual three circular options are explained below.

Purchasing new or reused office furniture with the gua-rantee that the supplier will buy back the goods that were supplied to you, when you decide you will no lon-ger use them. Your office furniture will al-ways keep its value. This makes the sup-plier not only the selling party, but also a service provider creating an optimum work environment for you.

What does this look like in practice?

The supplier ensures you have properly functioning workstations at your disposal. This guarantees that you will have high quality products with a focus on perfor-mance. If the workstation does not meet the agreed requirements and demands, the supplier will rectify this immediately. With the guarantee of buyback, you ultimately only pay for the use of the office furniture

and you own the interior only as long as you are using it. After the buyback the supplier is responsible for the pick-up of the furniture and for giving it a new life cycle.

A smart and environmentally friendly concept that is even financially benefi-cial to your company!

renting office furniture

Many entrepreneurs are hesitant to rent office furnitu-re. This is not justified, because there are many benefits to renting office furniture, even in the long term. Up to a period of 2 years, renting is even more cost-effective than buying. These days, you also don’t need to sacrifice design and user comfort, because you select the furni-ture that matches your requirements and organisation. Naturally, all our office furniture meets the relevant health and safety legislation.

flexibility

Entrepreneurs, who decide to rent our office furniture, often do this due to the flexibility it offers. Your furni-ture can be supplied within 24 hours. Very useful if you need to offer temporary workstations to part-time em-ployees or additional members of staff in busier times or for short-term projects. The same flexibility is a benefit when you start a new company or department. It is dif-ficult to know in advance how successful your new in-vestment will be. Furthermore, you can compensate the delivery time of your new furniture with rented furniture. In short, there is a great advantage to renting. If you rent office furniture, the rent is a directly deductible post.

There is less pressure on the liquidity of your company. renting office furniture is also a practical option in case of unforeseen calamities. It can happen to anyone: wa-ter- or even fire damage. The consequences may seem difficult to oversee, but with rented furniture at least you can have your employees back to work within 24 hours at their new or temporary workstations.

combination of renting and buying

Buying does not exclude renting. It is even advisable to rent 10 to 15 percent of your office furniture. Every com-pany has a certain amount of staff turnover. To ensure you have a workstation available for that new employee or to make space available after an employee leaves, renting office furniture is a good solution. benefits of renting

• Flexibility• Cost-effective as a temporary solution (up to 2

years)• Less pressure on liquidity• You select the design and the measurements• Fast delivery and pick-up

leasing office furniture

Leasing boils down to financing office furniture. It can be very expensive to design a new office according to your own personal preference and image and be detrimental to the company’s liquidity. By leasing the furniture you have more freedom to purchase office furniture entirely according to your wishes. In a lease contract, you pay a set amount per month, just like with a lease car or com-puter. Following the lease period, you can return the leased object, lease it again, of buy it, according to the type of contract. ”Don’t own, enjoy!”

flexibility

The market is ever-changing, just like digitalisation and logistics. Consequently, a requirement for the design of a work environment is that it must meet the fast-chan-ging circumstances and be flexible. You are completely flexible with regards to your furniture. With products

that always meet the highest standards with regards to design, ergonomics and sustainability.

benefits of leasing

• Liquidity of the company does not suffer• The monthly payment during the contract term is

set, making it easy to make a budget for it• residual value risk lies with supplier• You are not obliged to purchase the furniture, you

can return it to the lease organisation• It concerns an ‘off-balance’ financing, so the

balance sheet ratios (particularly solvency) are not affected

• The VAT over the investment is paid by the lease organisation, and the monthly payments will be subject to VAT.

sustainable and efficient interi-or design for an office building is done like this!

Circular procurement and the New Way of Working have changed our views of traditional workstations. Having your own desk with lockable cabinet, framed photos of your smi-ling kids, it is a rare sight these days. It is becoming increasingly important to use the m2 in an office building as sustainably and efficiently as possible. Interior design plays an essential part in this. The end user in particular is the main focus in the interior design of office spaces. They have to be able to work in a sustainable, flexible environ-ment, wherever they may be. Collea-gues must be able to switch locations or workstations swiftly and efficiently, and at the same time it is important for the quality of contacts with other col-leagues to be maintained.

The sustainable and flexible interi-or design of the spaces and the in-terpersonal contact deserve all the attention in creating a new work environment.

As a facilities manager you can crea-te inspiring lounges where meetings can take place and where collea-gues can talk to each other, place sitting- as well as standing tables rather than permanent desks, dis-cover alternative ways for meeting rooms where flexible working takes place and think of special acoustic solutions.

how important is it to put together an interior design plan for an office in which the end user is the main focus.

To create a flexible and sustainable climate for individual employees has added value in achieving ob-jectives. Furthermore, division of workstations and interior design are determining factors in the degree of productivity and experience of the users, whether they are employees

A workstation at home offering the same flexibility as an office workstation

The advantages for employees to work from home are clear. Less traf-fic, less travelling time, less travel costs and less absenteeism. Often productivity increases in working from home, because employees do not disturbed by the interruptions they have at the office. Furthermo-re, it is easier to combine their work life with their private life. There are also advantages for the employer:

less loss of time due to travel she-nanigans of employees, fewer costs due to absenteeism.

Important to note with regards to working from home

A similar amount of attention will need to be paid to achieve the same level of flexibility at home that the user experiences at the office, in order to achieve the same producti-vity and quality. Desko investigates the needs of the user working from home and where possible creates the same facilities one would have in an office environment.

Circular interior planningIn the development of Valley the out-side space and the landscape are a testing ground for circular thinking and circular products. The design of Valley differentiates itself among other things by the ‘circular’ use of materials. In the design, four go-verning principles were formulated: to take the existing as the starting point, to be at least self-sufficient

and to use constant recycling, to offer clean transportation and to en-courage value-creation aimed at the transition to a sustainable society.

It is an R&D work environ-ment inspired by Cradle to Cradle © principles. It constantly makes use of the latest circular design insights. A number of designs by Desko have al-ready been presented here and Val-ley was the venue where the Circular Design Award 2016 was presented.

It is time for a systematic change! A transition from a take-make-was-te- economy to a circular economy. Circular models play an essential part, not only in decreasing our foot-print, but also in creating a healthy future. A future in which growth and progress aren’t necessarily linked to ever-decreasing fossil resources. In the past few years the circular economy has increasingly made its way to the top of the political agen-da and in company strategies. The challenge remains its concrete im-plementation. New business- and fi-nancial models, legislation and pro-duct design that support and make the circular philosophy possible are required.Circle Economy, a social enterprise aimed at the practical and scalable

implementation of the circular eco-nomy, offers an immediate insight into the extent to which company processes are already circular by means of an online assessment. Apart from a company-wide scan Circle Economy also provides ana-lyses for specific products. Such an analysis was conducted for Desko, which showed that the Desko Duo Slinger Table, thanks to the use of a circular buy-back model, generates 62% less CO2-emissions and con-sumes 61% fewer natural resources. The buy-back model is a way to ex-tend the life cycle of products and to keep the materials part of the cycle as long as possible. This decreases the manufacturing of new furniture which is where the largest footprint is generated. An improved insight

process offers a wealth of opportunities: chain cooperation, innovati-

2046 is the year the oil supply will have been exhausted. Not only due to a lack of natural resources will it be necessary to search for alternati-ves, but also because this is the most polluting industry in the world.

In other words, back to nature! PLANQ uses inexhaustible and re-newable sources such as flax, hemp, and organic plastics based on starch to manufacture products. Products that will be reusable and biodegra-dable at the end of their lifespan. This way they close the cycle of ma-terials and are easy on the environ-ment. There are about 29 hectares of undeveloped land around Desko’s head office in the region of Amster-dam Sloterdijk/Westpoort where flax and hemp are being planted which can be used for the production of for example the Linum Chair and the Linum Stool.

5,8 Million tons is the weight of the mountain of textile waste in Europe alone. But 25% of this is recycled.

The current waste mountain isn’t for-gotten either: textile fibres, jeans, company clothing, old jute coffee bags and other imaginable discar-ded textile fibres are used as resour-ces. In Europe alone only 25% of the 5,8 million tons of textile waste is recycled. This concerns mostly the long fibres, but particularly the short fibres are currently difficult to recy-cle. Beautiful products such as the denim table can be manufactured out of this.

425 Million kilograms in CO2 can be saved in the Netherlands by preven-ting these textile fibres from being burnt. So stop burning waste, be-cause the only thing we cannot recy-cle is the time that we have already lost!

The guiding principle in this is that the proceeds will go to the Ajax Foundation. It will be made public at a later stage how you can obtain a stadium chair.

Follow-upThe research team of the Urban Fac-tory at Amsterdam University of Ap-plied Sciences is working together with Desko on a spectacular con-cept for the Amsterdam ArenA and

are analysing its options for reuse of the chairs.

Marvellous collaboration This way Urban Factory, Desko and the Amsterdam ArenA are working together on a very appealing cir-cular chairs project, aiming to give another life to the 50.000 old chairs from the ArenA.

A reused chair from the Amsterdam ArenAAmsterdam ArenA has started a megaproject: replacing the stadium chairs.

The first 4.091 chairs will be replaced during the winter break. After that

the rest of the stadium chairs will be replaced in constant batches in bet-

ween games and other events. The intention is for supporters to be seated

in new chairs by January 2018. But what to do with the old chairs?

FROM BAGGAGE CARRIER TO CHAIR We Beat the Mountain developed the ‘Circular Carrier Seat’ on the basis of the carriers that are used for the baggage handling at Amsterdam airport. The carried is newly designed to give it the function of a comfortable chair. They combined the design with a wooden frame to turn it into an attractive and highly durable object for use in the public spaces. The carries transport baggage for an average of 30.000 passengers during their life cycle. With this functional but also unique design the carriers are given years of additional use by allowing passengers to enjoy a comfortable chair and some rest.

Transition to circular products and servicesSince 2014 Lune has implemented a complete redesign of the product portfolio to circular products. All Lu-ne’s collection methods are made of recyclable material and due to its modular construction they can be adjusted to suit new waste flows. The products are easy to maintain, repair, and replace. This way, not only does this significantly increase the lifespan, but they are also enti-rely upgradable for a new life cycle.

Lune’s ambition is to be able to take back 80% of the waste collection methods for refurbishment within to make a contribution in the effort to reduce waste of resources and waste in general terms. For this purpose a refurbishment station will be set up in the factory in Hoogeveen; used parts can then be reused in new pro-

ducts. Taking back all the materials to the factory has made new busi-ness models possible, that are fully in line with circular principles. This ranges from upgrading, and refur-bishment, to repair, and pay-per-use to lease with an accompanying re-turn arrangement.

De Split, adjustable to new waste flows With the collection system ‘Split’, Lune offers a solution to facilities managers in their challenge to achieve a circular interior design of the building and the work environ-ment. The collection and separation of waste plays an important part in this. Logistic waste flows in compa-nies and institutes are highly specific and changeable. For example, by entering into a contract with a new collector or other adjustments in the chain of waste processing. The Split

is completely adjustable to new was-te flows. The timeless design and the option for an upgrade and re-pair make the Split future proof. The circular refurbishment station in the factory ensures the used parts can be reapplied for new products. Fu-rthermore, Lune offers the possibility for a pay-per-use lease model which includes a return arrangement.

Just startThe transition to a circular economy is a fact. How and to what extent this is designed, will be different for every company. Lune sees it as a development to thinking differently: from waste to resource and to an al-ternative form of procurement; from possession to use. Lune’s advice is to just start and to discover the circu-lar potential, just like the (financial) benefits this offers during and follo-wing use.

Complete focus on circularAs Ambassador for Circular Hotspot Lune, just like Desko, is a proponent of the circular economy and actively propagates the principles internally as well as externally. Through coo-peration with waste collectors and suppliers, universities, government authorities, municipalities and the wider circular economy network, Luna focusses completely on the fu-rther development and innovation of her products and services within the principles of the circular econo-my.

Making more efficient use of what we already have is a logical princi-ple of the circular economy. This does not only apply to better use of natural resources, but also of ma-terial, services and knowledge. This is often forgotten in the debate on sustainability. This forgotten gap is filled by FLOOW2. The essence of FLOOW2’s service is ‘B2B asset sharing’: the sharing of possessions between companies, institutes and departments or branches or large organisations. FLOOW2 develo-ped an online business-to-business marketplace for sharing; offering companies and institutes the possi-

bility for mutual secondment, rental or lending of material and services, but also knowledge and know-how of members of staff. This also inclu-des forklifts, company cars, parking spaces, meeting rooms, storage facilities, members of staff or an MRI-scanner, operating rooms and specialist knowledge in a hospital.

Organisations can simply and se-curely loan or rent from each other through the online platform and consequently save on expenses. Because there is no need to invest in the purchase of new material or hiring permanent staff members. Fu-

More efficient use by sharing, the forgotten gap in the circular economy. From linear to circular, from possession to use, and from ownership to ac-

cess. Terms and developments that are increasingly well-known, but the

shape and content of which are also becoming more and more concrete

in our economy and society. Developments are regularly taking place in

which the ‘waste’ of the one company process becomes the ‘resources’

for other companies, leading to the more efficient use of energy and

resources, and which stimulates cooperation between companies.

rthermore, companies can tempo-rarily rent their own material or ser-vices to fellow entrepreneurs. This enables the realisation of additional turnover from asset sharing, besides turnover from their core activities. Apart from these financial benefits asset sharing leads to an impact on sustainability in the world. Where everyone is talking about reduce/re-use/recycle FLOOW2 fills the forgot-ten gap for B2B: using the overca-pacity of others by working together and sharing.

Asset sharing presents companies and organisations with an entirely new business model: an additional source of income as an add-on to the core business, cost reductions, and a more intensive life cycle of goods, leading to a reduction in the waste of resources and energy. With this business model FLOOW2 aims to change the way of doing busi-ness and changing behaviour in the current society, in which working in partnerships, cooperation and sha-ring are the key to success and con-tinuity. www.floow2.com

Multinationals and governmentsCompanies like Royal Philips, Schip-hol Airport, DSM and Accenture started making substantial invest-ments years ago in the development of circular solutions. The World Eco-nomic Forum and the de Ellen Ma-cArthur Foundation place a jointly emphasise the necessity to make a faster wide scale transition to a cir-cular economy. Furthermore, the Eu-ropean Commission has set circular objectives for the member states of the European Union, which are com-parable to the Dutch objectives.

The integration of the circular pro-cesses in existing business models aimed at generating turnover, howe-ver, also often carries with it the ne-cessary challenges. Closed company cycles have a comprehensive nature

and demand thorough cooperation between all parties involved. Small companies in particular lack neces-sary resources to take their first steps in this area and to experiment. They swiftly lose track of things and often don’t know where to begin.

December 2016 the Dutch government signed a national natural resour-

production cycles on the basis of shared materials and reusable waste

is truly up and coming. The cabinet’s ambition fits a range of develop-

ments in line with ‘A Circular Netherlands in 2050’.

“We must translate words and agreements into action, and offer companies and organisations, from small to large, a hub enabling them to become circular as simply and as successfully as possible”, says Guido Braam, director at Valley Creators. Valley has already started in Valley Beta, a temporary hub in Hoofd-dorp, at a distance of 5 kilometres from Schiphol. The new campus with, among others, comprehensi-ve workstations, experiments labs,

and training facilities are currently in the developmental stage and will be completed in 2018.

“We are ready for more concrete, large-scale circular projects. Valley is an iconic project in itself, but the place where circular economy turns into reality is located in the areas of the built environment, logis-tics and horticulture”, says Guido.

FROM LP TO LAMP Recycled LP lighting is a durable collection of lighting made from recycled material. The lamp shades are made from reused LP’s. The LP’s are heated and reshaped by hand. This way a lamp shade is created. Each lamp shade is different because each vinyl record is different! The collection consists of a desk lamp, a wall lamp and hanging lamps in diffe-rent sizes. Sustainability is very important to LamP. By using old LP’s that would otherwise have been thrown away, a useless object is reused for a new product. It enables the user to see that you can use a product in different ways.

The lamps from the collection can be manufactured with almost 100 different kinds of cord.

How does it work?On location, this software programme creates a transparent report of a com-pany’s entire inventory. In the system each piece of furniture gets a unique identification number. The report that is linked to the scan provides details about the brand of the furniture, the quality, registered traces of usa-ge, current and replacement value, the value after refurbishing, and the CO2-footprint after disposal in the natural resources passport for the locations concerned.

More efficient maintenance of furnitureThis way furniture becomes traceable, making maintenance and use more efficient. The tool provides organisati-ons with the insight they need to pre-

vent them from having to throw just anything away in case of expansion, shrinkage, moving or in case of bro-ken furniture. This way companies can guarantee that used or furniture with defects can be given a new life.

Rabobank is convinced that companies who practice sus-tainable and circular entrepre-neurship are better prepared for the changes in their en-vironment. They will become the market leaders of the future with business models that are sustainable in the future. Rabo-bank is pleased to offer these companies their support. But, the transition from a linear to a circular company model does not happen overnight. The ban-king assessment of a circular business case requires a slightly different approach too. That is why in 2016 Rabobank started the Circular Economy Challen-ge in the metropolitan region

of Amsterdam. Twelve compa-nies from the chain ‘organic re-sidual flows’ and from the con-struction- and interior design sector are participating in this Challenge. Together – and with their client relations and know-ledge partners – they set up a circular action plan. Cooperati-on is an important condition in this process: high quality reuse of products is only possible if a whole chain or network of com-panies actively contribute to it. For example, the participants have discussed each other’s am-bitions and plans in forums, with the goal of actually applying concrete circular entrepreneur-ship.

‘Philip Wenneker (partner/sr. project manager) of 4Building and participant of the Challen-ge states that circular economy is about: ‘Not because we can, but because we must’! We feel the views surrounding construc-tion and real estate need to change in order to contribute to the achievement of sustainable ambitions. In the construction- and infrasector we commit our-selves to developing plans for valuable and future proof pro-jects. Together form the basis to achieve this.’

Circular enterpreneurship is about CooperationRabobank sees circular entrepreneurship as one of the pillars on which the innovation of the Dutch

economy and society will be based in the coming years. An economy based on reuse of raw materi-

als and/or resources and new products and services. An economy that promotes people’s wellbeing

and their quality of life while minimising the environmental footprint on their surroundings.

It is a unique circular business development project and our national Hub for the circular economy.
