OVER 40 per cent of gym memberswould be ‘likely’ or ‘very likely’ topurchase fitness products from theirgym if it had a well-stocked onlinestore, according to research whichshows savvy operators could profitfrom introducing an online retail arminto their businesses.

The You Gov research, commis-sioned by e-commerce fitness spe-cialist Gym-Partners, polled 1,500gym members, and also found that: 53 per cent of members spendmoney on fitness clothing everymonth, with 12 per cent spendingover £25 and five per cent spendingover £50. 29 per cent spend up to £50 amonth on supplements. 18 per cent spend monthly onequipment.

Gym-Partners works with leisureoperators, fitness companies andindustry influencers to provide anonline retail solution, which monetis-es their health-conscious database.

These businesses and individualsbenefit from a high-quality webshop, built to their brand standards and tai-lored to requirements, completelyfree of charge.

The company also takes care of

sales and promotion with a range oftargeted email and SMS communica-tions, supported by in-gym POS andstaff and member promotional codes. They also handle all orders includingdelivery and tracking.

Director of Gym-Partners StephenColes said: “Operators are fast realis-ing that, aside from bricks and mor-tar, the value of their business is tiedup within their database. An onlineretail offering can generate substan-tial additional revenue, but it can alsodirectly and positively impact mem-ber experience and retention.

“Those members who invest earlyon in the right kit – especially newmembers – are more likely to feelcomfortable in the gym environment,be more "tooled-up" to achieve theirgoals and therefore more likely tocontinue their membership. Allowingthem to go elsewhere to buy whatthey need is a huge missed opportu-nity. Some of the major barriers foroperators in setting up retail opportu-nities are understanding the art ofretailing, holding stock/fulfilmentand being able to source a wideenough range of products to create atruly complete solution. At Gym-Partners we take care of all of this, leaving the gyms to concentrate ontheir core business.”

PT offering exercise topeople living in ruraland deprived areasBy Olivia Taylor

AN Oxfordshire personal trainer ison a mission to provide good qualityexercise to people living in rural anddeprived areas.

Darren Davies came up with theidea of The Re-gener8 Foundationafter realising there wasn’t a widevariety of fitness provision for peo-ple in his local area.

In some circumstances, residentsin rural Oxfordshire face an hour’scommute to get to their local gymand Darren wants to provide thesepeople with an alternative.

He said: “I live on a council estateand when it comes to funding weseem to be forgotten. I want to pro-vide people with some form of exer-cise. Body weight exercises are reallyeffective, all I need is a village hall,or just a field when the weatherstarts picking up.

“It doesn’t matter as long as wehave somewhere to break down thebarrier of fitness.”

To fund the concept, Darren isoffering local businesses the chanceto take part in exercise classes likeZumba and Pilates for a monthly

cost, by doing that they can get fitterand provide Darren with cash to gettheir local communities fitter.

The Re-gener8 Foundation arewilling to provide exercise classes topeople of all ages and backgrounds, whether that’s youngsters fromdeprived areas or the elderly.

He added: “We as fitness profes-sionals need to ask ourselves whyare we doing this job, is it purely tochase the cash and make money oris it to make people healthier?”

The programme was founded inNovember but things have alreadygot off to a flying start, with thefoundation securing the chance tooffer frame football to disabledlocals at Oxford City Football Club.

Darren said: “With the Regener8programme it’s not about profit. Aslong as our overheads are covered, Idon’t care.

“It’s a social enterprise, it’s a bitlike Robin Hood, it’s about feedingback.” Are you providing exercise provi-sion to your local community? Letus know and you could feature in afuture issue of WorkOut: [email protected]

A PERSONAL trainer is attractingwomen from all walks of life with herunique and effective exercisemethod.

The SXE Fit concept was born over10 years ago when founder and CEOTiffany Clark realised there wasn’tanything on the market that empow-ered women and helped them get fitwhilst giving them more confidence.

She said: “That’s everything thatSXE Fit stand for. It’s about confi-dence, it’s not about weight, it’s aboutthe bigger picture.

“The model is about enablingwoman to get the knowledge theyneed to build their confidence whenit comes to fitness.”

Tiffany incorporates her methodsinto traditional gym classes like Legs,

Bums and Tums and Aerobics addingdance moves and usage of the pole,as well as providing more specialistclasses like aerial hoops and poledancing.

She added: “By incorporating themethod into the classes, it allowsmembers to get excited and it keepsthem intrigued.”

The classes were originally taught ina gym setting but now Tiffany has herown 1800sqft studio inHeckmondwike, which allows ladiesto train in her classes under neonlights.

“I’ve done everything myself, thebuilding was completely derelictbefore. I think that’s why it means somuch, but I don’t do it for myself, Ido it for the members.”

Tiffany does everything in her

power to eliminate excuses when itcomes to women and exercise; creat-ing a family friendly atmosphere thatwelcomes people from all walks oflife through the door.

She added: “We even do a kids’ classcalled SXE Fit Minis not only becausethere’s nothing out there for youngergirls but because there’s always theexcuse of not being able to get childcare. I want to eliminate the excuses.”

In the coming months, Tiffany, whose club made the NationalFitness Awards’ shortlist last year inthe Ladies Only Gym of the Year cate-gory, is looking to branch out andopen another premises.

She added “From the beginning, mymission has been for people to comehere and make friends whilst enjoy-ing what they’re doing.”

This Girl Caninspire millionsMILLIONS of women and girls have beeninspired to get more active thanks to theThis Girl Can campaign, which has recently celebrated its first birthday, and is now looking to achieve even greater participation levels.

According to figures, 2.8m 14-40 yearold women say they have done some ormore activity as a result of the campaign, which tells the unedited story of womenwho exercise and play sport.

A snapshot sample of 1,000 women wereasked the physical activity they did, theirattitudes to exercise and their awarenessof the campaign, reinforcing the ActivePeople Survey results published inDecember, which revealed a surge in thenumber of women taking part in activityor sport.

Sport England chief executive JenniePrice said: “I’m very encouraged by thesenew figures, which back up the results wesaw last month. They show This Girl Canis not just being talked about, but is alsochanging behaviour.

“But the job is far from done. With agender gap of 1.73m fewer women playing sport compared to men,we need to keep getting the message outthere that women come in all shapes and sizes and levels of ability, and theyshould all feel able to exercise and playsport.”

Award-winninggym foundershares top tipsTHE founder of a National FitnessAward winning club has shared histop five tips on how to build anaward winning team.

Established 10 years ago inLondon’s Highgate Village, personaltraining studio All About You spe-cialises in tailor made fitness routinesserving people of all ages and abili-ties, with clients including a numberof famous faces from the world of tel-evision, sport and business.

The club was also crowned GymTeam of the Year at the 2015 NationalFitness Awards in Leicester, beatingoff competition from finalists allaround the country.

Following their success, founderand owner David Osgathorp, who hasalso written a guide to customer serv-ice for PTs, has now shared his fivepoint plan to building an award win-ning gym team. His tips are:

1. Look for the right personalities:Every business has a personality, whether you know it as brand, con-sumer perception or company mis-sion. The people in your businesswho are responsible for delivering theethos and vision on a daily basisshould have your core values reflect-ed in their personality too. Long goneare the days where a never-ending list

of qualifications means success for apersonal trainer; today’s more savvyconsumers buy people much morethan checklists.

2. When recruiting, test desire:Typically when recruiting a trainer Ibegin with a telephone interview fol-lowed by a face to face one – as atime saving exercise. At either inter-view stage I will ask the applicant toeither meet me or speak to me on thephone well outside typical businesshours, for example an interview at7am. This will immediately speak vol-umes for how much the potentialaddition to my team really wants towork with us. Recently I arrange atelephone interview with a youngtrainer during the call he revealedthat he was currently in Australia andthat it was 5am there at the time. That’s the dedication we search for!

3. Mentor, don’t dictate:This is an obvious one that you’ve allprobably heard before, but there’smore to it than sporadic staff train-ing. At All About You I aim to create acloser relationship with my teamrather than one of “me boss, youemployee” by listening to my teamvery closely; occasionally if theymention a book they want to read for

example, I might go and buy it forthem, it’s not much but it shows I waslistening and I care. Little things thenmake life a lot easier when it comesto further training.

4. Make sure everyone has a specialism:Too often I see trainers gravitatetowards their preferred method ofexercise with every client they haveput in front of them. Our team leavesego at the door, if we can identify thata new client is best served by a differ-ent trainer in our team for a specificrequirement we don’t hesitate tomake the shift to a new trainer.Ensure your team collectively has awide variety of skills to cover a multi-tude of requirements.

5. Develop a “Cheers” culture:We’ve all seen the old sitcom Cheers. The one thing everyone remembers isthe character Norm; whenever any-one walks through the door everyperson greets him – this is how everyone of your clients should feel whenthey walk through the door – some-where everybody knows their name.

David added: “Try and create aunique experience for every clientthat comes in the door. Create a fivestar hotel service model for yourclients.”

ACCORDING to a 2016 ACSM survey, the number one trend in fitness iswearable technology.

Wearable technology is essentially asensor built into a device that tracksphysical activity to different degrees.

Typically, this information is com-municated to a smartphone viaBluetooth – but it also goes beyondthat.

Some technology tracks your sleep, others track how long you standthroughout the day, how far you walkor how much concerted exercise youdo. The initial question to ask is,“how do we turn this data into valuefor the user?”

The larger question is whether ornot the commercial fitness industrycan harness that value to create ROI.This leaves operators wondering,“which is the right wearable for thegym operator?”

Values: wearables provide two keybenefits

The first is “Gamification” – the useof game mechanics in a non-gamescenario. Examples include goal set-ting, challenges, badges, and statusranking. The way to enhance thispower is to provide material rewardor social amplification.

Simply put, if the user performs acertain behaviour they are given anaward of value, or immediate publicadulation. It is this immediacy ofreward that plays into the habit cycleof CUE-ROUTINE-REWARD.

From a club operator perspective, this can translate into more motivat-ed members. They will visit more fre-quently and have a higher net pro-

moter score, which also means theyrefer more friends, buy more product, and stay longer. In one phrase: morelifetime value.

That said, the challenge for opera-tors is to engage their population inusing their devices and incentivisingthem with games. Games can includerewards for achieving levels ‘fun runlike’ challenge such as MarchMadness, or they can tap into a lot-tery scenario where the pointsearned can give the user tickets into aprize draw. These tactics all drivepositive behaviour across multiplepopulations.

A second key value proposition isdiving deeper into insights of themember by having an understandingof key measures such as heart rate, calories consumed and burned, stepswalked, hours slept, among others.

It is the data that helps the trainers

of our facilities to pass qualified com-ments. For example, using data to seeheart rate recovery improve, a leadindicator of a member’s fitness level. This insight helps the trainer showthe member they are progressing, orregressing, positioning the trainer asmore insightful and more valuable.

Trainers need to be careful whenreferencing metrics like sleep, as thequestions very quickly becomes “areyou qualified to prescribe a solutionto broken sleep?” If they are not qual-ified, they should stick to what theyare qualified in: heart rate and calo-ries counting are two prime exam-ples.

For those with the algorithms, valuewill extend to predictive analysis:understanding when clients areabout to abort, and when others havea propensity to purchase more.

Whichever way you decide to takewearables, the key is to have a cleargoal and a simple strategy that rollout one phase at a time. Vendors withsystems, marketing, and ROI modelsare the best support.

36 OUTDOOR FITNESS

I RARELY exercise outdoors ... I’m not sure if it’s the current dark morn-

ings and evenings or a reluctance topotentially get cold, wet or muddy thatputs me off, but on the odd occasion I doventure outside for a workout, I’m alwayspleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyit – and reminded that I really should try itmore often.

Heading down to my local park on afrosty Saturday morning, I wasn’t reallysure what to expect from Wireless Fitnessas this was the first full session of the classto take place and something completelynew to the area.

But wrapped up in several layers, I wasready to brave the cold and give it a go andfrom meeting instructor Victoria and theother participants in the car park before-hand, it seemed everyone was eager to getstarted – and warm up!

The Wireless Fitness concept is simple;each person wears a set of Bluetoothheadphones, allowing them to hear aplaylist created by the instructor and anyinstructions they give.

Yet its simplicity is what makes it soeffective because as soon as you put those

headphones on, you’re ready to begin. As a group, we started off with a jog

around the park, soon removing our outerlayers as we got warmed up, followed byexercises such as press ups, sit ups and theplank, all set to an upbeat soundtrack tokeep us motivated.

During the hour-long class we also didsome hill sprints, interval training andburpees, and finished the class with a jogback to the car park – narrowly avoiding astampede of Park Run runners – and somecool down stretches.

I have taken part in outdoor bootcampsin the past and while I’ve always enjoyedthem, here the music really added another

dimension. It also meant it was easier to hear

Victoria’s instructions and listening to thetracks gave us all an opportunity to switchoff from the noise of the outside world toreally focus on our workouts.

The sessions were an effective way ofbringing the best features of a studiobased class into the outside environmentand I can see this concept proving popularas there is nothing else like it aroundBarnsley. It’s great to see a new trend beingpicked up locally so quickly. I’m lookingforward to seeing how the classes progress– and will definitely be back again myselffor another go!

An innovative class is bringing the benefits of an indoor studio workout outside byequipping instructors with the technology to deliver outdoor workouts with music.Workout editor Christina Eccles joined in with a session.

World off, headphones onfor Victoria’s latest sessions

FORWARD thinking personal trainerVictoria Hudson was inspired tobring the Wireless Fitness conceptto Barnsley after seeing its foundersappearing on TV’s Dragon’s Denwhere they were pitching for fund-ing.

Before the programme had evenfinished, she’d sent an email to theteam asking how she could getinvolved – and within weeks had setup her own class in the town’s LockePark.

Inspired by silent discos, the class-es use wireless headphones and aspecially developed wireless trans-mitter to enable fitness instructorsto deliver any music based exerciseclass outdoors.

Teachers can devise their own

playlists and workouts, allowingthem to take anything from outdooryoga to aerobics and interval train-ing sessions out of the gym and intothe park without any noiserestrictions.

Former National Fitness Awards’finalist Victoria already runs asuccessful bootcamp in the park, but told Workout being able to nowhold sessions with music adds a dif-ferent dimension to classes andhelps her tap into a new audiencewho would like to try something dif-ferent.

She said: “In my sessions I like tochange things each week and themusic opens up new avenues.

“You can really get into the zoneand can’t be distracted – it’s world

off, headphones on – and there areloads of possibilities.”

The first class was fully bookedafter Victoria advertised it on socialmedia and her followers havealready been asking for more ses-sions, leading to her now also put-ting on a Wednesday morning class.

Sticking to a class size of 11 peoplealso means she will be able to giveeach participant more individualattention – something she believesworks better for her than trying tohold bigger sessions where it wouldbe difficult to keep an eye on every-one.

She added: “My retention rate isbetter when my classes are smaller. They get to know me and I get toknow them.”

COCONUT oil could be the next big thing for gym owners looking tomaximise secondary spend in theirclubs this year, according to anexpert.

The product has been growing inpopularity over the last few years andGarry Stiven, owner of Coconoil, believes research being carrying outin conjunction with Hull University isjust beginning to unlock the oil’s ben-efits for sportsmen and women – andsavvy gyms could tap into this.

According to the company, theresearch highlights how importantcoconut oil could prove to be as asupplement for fuelling fitness;showing that the body is able toutilise the fats found in coconut oilsas fuel much better than it can otherfats.

Garry explained: “It’s time for theindustry to stop just selling high car-bohydrate products and look at whatthe science is beginning to say. Fatscan be just as important for fuellingexercise as carbs and coconut oilcould well be the most effective fatthere is in this area.”

Garry also said that there has beena rise in sales of Coconoil to gymsand health clubs over the past fewmonths as operators start to see the

benefits, but that this could be justthe tip of the iceberg.

He added: “We’re seeing more andmore gyms approaching us askingwhether they can stock either theCoconoil brand or a coconut oilunder their own label.

“We’re obviously delighted aboutthis but feel 2016 will see this interestincrease dramatically as consumersbecome more educated on the bene-fits of fat as a fuel and furtherresearch is published on coconut oil’sbenefits.”
