Page 2: Workplace Campaign 2010 Annual Report

How did you get involved with United Way? Are you one of those people who saw an ad, responded to a pledge form, read an article in the newspaper or attended an event? Or, did you become involved, like most people do, because you were asked? The vast majority of individuals who contribute to a charitable organization, whether as a volunteer, donor or both, were invited by someone to become involved.

United Way’s fall “campaign” focused not on dollars but on people. In 2010, United Way volunteers and staff asked investors to Be 1 and Get 1. We know that the more people are engaged with United Way’s work as a donor and/or volunteer, the more we can accomplish in our communities. As we turn our focus to addressing complex issues in our region, we know that it takes a coordinated, collaborative effort. The problems our communities face cannot be solved by one agency or institution. It takes all of us working together to identify the root cause, create a plan and work toward long-term solutions. It is hard work, but it is the right work.

Thank you for your involvement this past year. Whether you are new to United Way’s work or have been a longtime supporter, you have helped make a difference in our communities. We look forward to working with you!

Dear United Way Friend,

On behalf of the United Way Board of Directors, I would like to express my gratitude to the workplace campaign Loaned Executives for their dedication to the 2010 workplace giving campaign. I would also like to thank the Campaign Coordinators who organized internal campaigns for organizations, as well as the leadership of many organizations in the River Cities.

Although the economy still is not thriving, community members gave generously to United Way during 2010. Many thanks to all that contrib-uted to United Way’s 2010 fundraising efforts via workplace campaigns, corporate gifts, grants and other fundraising activities. As a result of these efforts United Way raised more than $1,166,467 in 2010. More impor-tantly United Way gained 773 new investors.

Funds raised will go toward United Way’s work in the areas of learning and earning, families and children, health and wellness and basic needs/unforeseen hardships. Funds will help us address issues in our community, such as high school dropout rates, hunger, and providing early childhood education. United Way will continue its support of safety net services (food, clothing, shelter, etc.) for those in need in Cabell, Lincoln, Mason, Wayne counties in West Virginia and Lawrence County, Ohio.It was an honor to work with so many wonderful United Way staff and volunteers in 2010.

It is comforting to know that the work United Way accomplished last year, will help the River Cities in 2011. LIVE UNITED.

Many thanks,

Community Giving

The organizations listed below are categorized by total pledges to United Way in 2010 (includes employee giving, special events, and organization gifts)Largest Total Pledge: Steel of WV/USWA Local 37 $91,600

Safety Net 30%Emergency: for example Food, Clothing, Shelter, Prescription Drugs, Utilities

Grants 70% Focus 20% Programs & Services that fall within one of the 4 focus areas

Impact 80% Grant proposals should indicate strategies that address critical issues in the community to achieve desired outcomes.

Funds Distribution ProcessIn 2010, United Way of the River Cities made several changes to improve its funds distribution process. In years past, funding was awarded on a January to December time frame. This meant that volunteers were making decisions about funding before the yearly fundraising activities were complete. The Board of Directors decided to move the funding cycle to July 1 through June 30. This allows for more time to process pledges and contributions, as well as receive campaign reports from national organizations. To reduce the potential financial burden on the 2010 funded partners, United Way offered six-month Continuation Grants for January to June 2011. Funds to cover those grants will be made available from United Way’s investment reserve account.

Not only will 2011 launch a new funding cycle, it will also introduce a new process. All health and human service nonprofit organizations in United Way’s five-county service area (Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln and Mason counties in West Virginia and Lawrence County, Ohio) will be eligible to apply for funds. As always, United Way strives to invest donor dollars in those programs that have the greatest impact on our region.

INITIATIVES

The Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership (CCSAPP) celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2011 and could not be in a better position to effect change by reducing and preventing the prevalence of youth substance abuse in Cabell County. In 2010, the coalition was awarded a federal Drug Free Communities Grant from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), one of 741 communities throughout the country to receive this award. The grant will provide the coalition with $125,000 a year for five years — possibly 10.

In addition to the federal grant, the coalition also receives federal block grant dollars for substance abuse prevention administered by the WV Bureau for Behavioral Health, a grant from the Huntington Clinical Foundation, grants from the Community Participation Fund and United Way Of the River Cities, CCSAPP’s most important supporter. In addition to a United Way community impact grant, the coalition also receives tremendous in-kind support from United Way. United Way not only houses the coalition office and employees but also serves as fiscal agent and gives the coalition a foundation for its mission in community problem solving through collaborative efforts.

CCSAPP membership has grown to more than 60 members, volunteers and youth over the past five years and currently employs one part-time and two full-time employees to facilitate the coalition’s efforts.

The United Way Success By 6®(SB6®) initiative is the nation’s largest network of early childhood coalitions, focused on improving school readiness through local community change. The initiative seeks to ensure that local children are ready physically, mentally, developmentally, emotionally and socially to begin school. United Way of the River Cities adopted this national initiative beginning in 1999. The local initiative is a collaborative of many community partners, including local child care centers; the public school system; local hospitals; local media; and agencies that address early childhood education, health and development.

SB6® developed The Brain Under Construction Zone™(BUCZ) in 2005 as a system designed to edu-cate the community about SB6’s 12 Tips on Raising a Healthy Child.

The BUCZ™ sites are active at Cabell Huntington Hospital as well as St. Mary’s Medical Center, where new parents will receive a packet of information about early brain development and other healthy child information. Other BUCZ™ sites can be found at daycare centers and healthcare facilities.

BUCZ™ projects in areas outside our service area are receiving ongoing training and support from Success By 6® and United Way of the River Cities. The Mid-Ohio Valley area, Morgantown and Putnam County are growing their programs with support from us. New training requests from other counties are in the planning stages.

Our signature events were very successful in 2010. Celebrate Children’s Sunday and Super Kids, Super Families, Super Saturday reached more than 800 kids and families with free children’s activities and important information about raising a healthy child.

The Financial Stability Partnership™ (FSP™) of the River Cities experienced an exciting 2010 that witnessed the growth of active participation on the part of its existing coalition partners while bringing several new partnering agencies on board. Active participation by our coalition members has more than doubled since April of this past year resulting in an invigoration of our mission. That mission, to strengthen our community by identifying and tracking the underlying causes of the financial hardships facing today’s families, continues to focus on the Financial Stability Framework which isincreasing income, building savings, then gaining and sustaining assets. Two key components of the FSP™ Framework are Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) outreach and adult financial literacy and education.

FSP™has successfully partnered with the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families and with the Internal Revenue Service to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to the hard-working families of the counties the United Way of the River Cities serves. VITA’s goal is to provide free tax preparation and assistance to individuals and families with household incomes less than $50,000 per year. This incredible service could not be possible without the dedicated volunteers who selflessly devote numerous hours of education and training to assist our clients. FSP™ is very grateful to the Walmart Foundation , United Way Worldwide, and the IRS VITA Grant Program for the funds which allow us to continue our work.

That work includes a nearly 42 percent increase in the EITC dollars our clients were able to obtain through the efforts of our VITA program during the 2010 tax season. As impressive as this figure is, it does not even take into account the savings our service provides to our clients who would otherwise have utilized the services of a paid preparer. The average cost of franchised tax office prepared return in 2010 was $208. Given that figure, FSP™’s VITA program was able to keep nearly $100,000 in our community.FSP™has partnered with several agencies in the River Cities to bring adult financial literacy to those in need within our community. Utilizing such modules as FDIC’s “Money Smart” and the Federal Reserve’s “Building Wealth” financial education programs, FSP™ has been able to partner with such agencies as the Huntington WV Housing Authority and Head Start.

All this would not be possible without the continue support of the United Way of the River Cities. We are very excited about the work FSP™ has been able to accomplish to this point and foresee an even greater opportunity to serve the hard-working families in our community in the coming years.

The Big Cover Up is a youth –led initiative that engages high school students in projects to ensure that children in need receive warm clothing during the winter months. More than 100 students from Dawson-Bryant, Rock Hill, South Point, Lincoln County, Symmes Valley and Huntington High Schools planned, fundraised and promoted their projects within the school and their local communities. United Way provided grants ranging from $600 to $1750. The youth volunteers experienced firsthand the value of giving back, and managing money, while more than 200 students in need received items that helped keep them warm and comfortable through the winter.

In 2005, FamilyWize® was created with two founding principles. First, to lower the cost of medicine as much as possible so people can get the medication they need. Second, to get this assistance to everyone who needs it.

Together with FamilyWize®, we have made a great start. We are reaching more at-risk families faster and delivering higher savings than ever before. Almost 1,000 United Ways partner with FamilyWize® and savings are greater than $123 million. The average savings per prescription is over 35 percent. We can ALL be proud that our hard work will reduce the cost of medicine for people in need by more than $60 million this year alone!

The FamilyWize® prescription drug discount cards are distributed free of charge by United Way of the River Cities and the FamilyWize® Partnership. Clip, use and reuse the coupon below. We encourage you to contact our office for additional cards for friends, family and if you can help us to distribute more cards to in-dividuals and groups in the River Cities. During the 2010 West Virginia 5K Championship, 541 runners/walkers completed the race. This was the largest race in Huntington, and raised $5,000 for United Way of the River Cities! The goal of the WV 5K Championship for 2011 will be to create a showcase event that is fun and exciting while promoting fitness and tourism.

Goals for the race are to provide a competitive and successful race, showcase the city, provide athletes and spectators with a professionally planned and executed event, promote and highlight running as a life sport, generate excitement and enthusiasm in the community for fitness as a lifestyle and showcase sponsors as organizations that are focused on fitness.

Volunteers and Donations ReportVolunteers are the backbone of our organization. They make up the Board of Directors, serve on committees, help plan and execute events, provide general office support, and much more.

For three years in a row, Amazon.com employees have volunteered their time with United Way through their employer sponsored program, “Amazon Cares.” In 2010, two groups of eight volunteers helped for two full days in October. These volunteers worked diligently by preparing bulk mailings, packing campaign supplies, organizing our office and storage, picking up litter on the outside grounds and preparing hundreds of materials for Success by 6® to be distributed at Cabell Huntington Hospital.

There are several volunteers who donate their time and energy through our Board of Directors, committees and Initiatives. These volunteers spend countless hours on a multitude of things, such as preparing hundreds of free tax returns for hard working families, reviewing volumes of grants, reaching out to donors through visits, making telephone calls or writing letters to share United Way’s work and visiting new mothers and their families in the hospitals.

We are grateful for their support over the past year. We extend our thanks to them as well as to those individuals and organizations listed below and in this report for helping us fulfill our mission.

If you or your organization would like to help United Way of the River Cities, please contact the United Way office at 304-523-8929 or via email [email protected].
