The year 2007 has been a time of extraordinary development of the bilateral relations between Korea and Italy with a plurality of political interactions: the strengthening of economic and commercial contacts, the development of further co-operation actions in the areas of science and advanced technology, the onset of many enriching cultural events. In year 2008, named the “Year of Italy in Korea”, Italy is willing to give a renewed sign of its commitment in making its presence in Korea – with the various aspects of its culture, the diversity of the products from its land and its industry, the multifaceted fruits of its ingenuity – even more important and stable.

Both Countries are resolutely looking toward the

future, and both are dedicating a special attention to science and to research, finding in such areas many different opportunities for successful co-operation actions.

Photonics promises to be the technology of the 21st

century, just as electronics was for the 20th. Through this pervasive cutting-edge technology, photons (light) can replace electrons in collecting, processing and transferring information with applications in various fields. Telecommunications and sensing is the field where this workshop aims to promote a fruitful interaction among researchers and scientists of Korea and Italy, bringing together industry, academia, operators, research institutions to discuss and compare the latest results and experiences, plans and achievements generated by applying photonics to this important field.

In the 21st century the human society will rely more and more on the development of the knowledge-based industry. Just as partnership is a key to success, reciprocal personal knowledge is a key to partnership. Knowing each other is one opportunity offered by this Korea-Italy bilateral workshop, hopefully paving the way toward future collaborations in a field with a rapidly expanding global market.
