The Lord Mayor, City of Adelaide
Martin Haese“Thank you and with the first Real Day Out
equally it is a terrific time in Adelaide…
there is a great deal of opportunity… with
a range of initiatives to create a better
future for the City of Adelaide. The
strategic plan becomes a blueprint being a
smart city, green city, liveable city and
creative city – they are all
interconnected. Technology is the enabler
of so many things including how
governments can deliver services, how we
can save energy with lighting applications
that are light/movement sensitive…”

RDO feedbackLiked
• Trialing and co-creating the first student Real Day Out by ASMS staff
• Working with friends in teams who now have a shared experience to
support informed future job and career discussions
• Realising that experience is important together with demonstrating
your skills and capabilities now
• Learning about the things that they don’t want to do
• Variety of stops so there was something for everyone
• Short presentation, lots of time for questions and discussion, engaging
speakers
• Practical, hands-on, immersive activities with real-world application
• Meeting people who were interested in them on a peer level30
@waperry@WorkforcePlan
RDO feedbackImprovements
• More time at each stop (45 mins), to get to the next stop and have
lunch comfortably as some had enough time and others didn’t
• More time to create Augmented Reality content and to prep pitch at
the end of the day with answers to inquiry based questions
• Maybe run the Real Day Out over 2 days with directional routes
• Need additional help with prep before meeting Ministers and MPs
• For each stop include a brief description and what to expect
• Student interest can be very situational, need to be exposed to
different stops as well as connect with specific areas of interest
• Auras need to be sign posted/more obvious31
@waperry@WorkforcePlan
Student feedbackThis first RDO highlighted all of the emerging jobs connected to being a smart
city and feedback from students indicates that it helped them hone their
knowledge on what jobs are possible, how a combination of skills and technical
expertise is needed, and how you need to show your skills now to create a
standout position.
“Very interesting and cool”
“Great day” “Very enriching”
“Learnt about the future of industries like banking”
“Didn’t realise that communication skills are number one”
“Fantastic opportunity and really hope it continues on next year”
“What we saw was awesome and intriguing”
“Amazing day, great opportunity and glad I got to go on it”
“Gave ideas of careers that we hadn’t even heard of…”32
