Other stanzas tell the adventures of the black umbrella: the woman on the Boulevard Saint Marcel who used it to protect her from the rain, the sword sallower who put it down his throat, and the acrobat who used it as a balancing pole. The bat tries to forget its loss of the umbrella and goes to an old manor where it is bored to death, while the umbrella has a great rollicking time at the Père-Lachaise Cemetery. Then one day a gust of wind turns the umbrella inside out and it is left for dead in the gutter. The bat cries "Fate is smiling on me! I thought it was lost, the

stick has returned." So they both go and say “Yes” in the attic of the town hall (in France civil marriages take place in the town hall). Only four years after its release, this song was being taught in some French public schools to children, 9 to 10 years of age. Around that time a special book was published with Fersen’s lyrics, illustrated by Aude Poirot. All this considered the song is well on its way to passing into the oral tradition. There are two different audio-video clips with the complete song available on the Internet: one on YouTube dated 16 Août 2007 (3:38) which only shows a sketch of a black bat throughout; another on YouTube dated 19 Mai 2008 (3:32) that has an animated toy puppet bat with a pink body and black wings that jumps and flips around (It has a heart-shaped pendant around its neck). A third audio-video sample is a delightful color/ black & white video, which is unfortunately no longer available on the Web. Here a young girl with a spiky cap and a black umbrella acts out the lyrics. She encounters another girl who has a small toy bat in her hands. For Stanza 7 the wind comes up and blows the umbrella away. In the end the two girls embrace and laugh. He performs the seven stanzas with the audience joining in and singing the repeated last line of each stanza. Following Stanza VI the instrumental accompaniment tapers off with a sigh and Fersen leaves a short silence then reduces the pace in half and slowly sings Stanza VII, “Un jour de mauvais temps.” After he puts in another short silent pause then returns to his normal rhythm and sings Stanza VIII and IX. He repeats the last two lines twice, ”Une chauve-souris/ Aimait un parapluie” and ends with a flourish.

The overall sentiment of the song concerns lost love. In one stanza he says that if love must lead to death, he will die, as have the great water wheels along the Sorgue River, which has its source at the great intermittent spring. The tradition of poetry about impossible love associated with the Fountain of Vaucluse goes back to the 14th Century classic poetry of François Pétrarque (Petrarch) telling of his Platonic love for the inaccessible Laure (Laura), his muse.

Regarding the resurgence cave itself – “La fontaine de Vaucluse est une cavité extraordinaire dont la genèse est liée à un événement géologique de première importance connu sous le nom de crise messinienne. Celle-ci correspond à l'assèchement de la mer Méditerranée durant le Messinien (fin du Miocène), c’est-à-dire il y a 5,96 à 5,33 millions d'années. La fermeture du détroit de Gibraltar, à l’origine du phénomène, a eu pour conséquence une baisse du niveau marin de l'ordre de 1500 à 2500 mètres. Les fleuves du pourtour de la Méditerranée ont à cette occasion baissé leur niveau de base en creusant de gigantesques canyons de plusieurs centaines de mètres de profondeur dont le Rhône a conservé des traces. La

réouverture du détroit de Gibraltar a été suivie d’une remontée du niveau de base et du comblement de la partie basse des fleuves par les sédiments. Ainsi a été créée cette fabuleuse source ‘vauclusienne.’” (Chabert 2011) [The Fontaine de Vaucluse is an extraordinary cave whose genesis is tied into a geological event of the first importance known as the Messinian Salinity Crisis. This event corresponds to the near complete desiccation of the Mediterranean Sea during the Messinian (at the end of the Miocene), that is, 5,96 to 5,33 millions years ago. The closing of the Straits of Gibraltar, the original cause of the phenomenon, resulted in the lowering of the sea level down to anywhere from 1500 to 2500m. At this time the rivers around the circumference of the Mediterranean had their base levels lowered, creating gigantic canyons up to several hundred meters deep, traces of which are preserved by the Rhone River. The reopening of the Straits of Gibraltar was followed by a rising of the base level and a sediment buildup in the lower parts of the rivers. The waters of a subterranean basin, 1,100 km square, captured the waters of Mount Ventoux, the Vaucluse Mountains, the Albion Plateau, and the Lure Mountain. Without access to their former resurgences the water only found an exit in a preexisting vertical cave shaft originally eroded out from top to bottom, the Fontaine de Vaucluse, which it was able to ascend for over 300m and to enlarge over the centuries. The composer and the date of composition of this ditty remain steadfastly unknown despite diligent research. The original text used Greta Garbo's name in stanza 3, verse 4, which would seem to indicate the 1930s as the date of composition. Les Quatre Barbus’ variant changed this name to Lollobrigida, more in keeping with the times. The lyrics tell of an “être bizarre/ Proche parent d' l'orang-outang” [a weird creature/ Close relative of the orangutan]

who lived two or three thousand years ago, clothed in a bison’s hide, and hunted bear and panther. The third stanza gives a good idea of the song’s humor – III. Il était poete à ses heures III. He was a poet when he felt like it, Disant à sa femme en émoi, Telling his woman with great emotion, "Tu est bell' comme un dinosuare "You're as beautiful as a dinosaur, Tu ressemble à Lollobrigida; You look like Lollobrigida; Si tu veux voir des cart's postales If you want to see some postcards Viens dans ma cavern' tout là-haut Come on up to my cavern there, J' te f'rai voir des peintur's murales I'll show you some mural paintings On dirait du vrai Picasso." One might call 'em real Picassos."

The fourth and last stanza has the prehistoric ancestors coming back after three thousand years and seeing people sweating at work six days out of seven. Without hesitation they would say – "Vraiment qu'nos héritiers sont bêtes "Our descendants really must be stupid D'avoir inventé le travail." To have invented work." The word "Cromagnon" translates as Magnon Cave, since “Cro” means cave or rock shelter. It is a shallow shelter cave behind some houses just north of the Hotel de Cro-Magnon at Les Elyzies in the Dordogne department. Originally the entire shelter was buried under overburden and only came to light during the

construction of the nearby railroad and the removal of material for road repair. The plague over the entrance proclaims that Cro-Magnon man was discovered here in 1868 by François Berthoumeyrou. But all the reports say that it was Louis Lartet who excavated five skeletal remains of prehistoric man here in 1868. The human skeletons were found in the pocket at the rear of the shelter and these are the celebrated specimens that gave the species its name. The section profile shows that a large portion of the overhanging rock once extended out much further.

Battle, the founder of the scouting movement in Catalonia. He got it from the French scouts and translated it into Catalan. Here a young girl soloist back by a full children’s choral and a rock orchestra sings the song. The text follows the original ideas quite closely but the stanzas 2 and 3 are reversed. The rock orchestra does the bridge following stanza 2 and chorus. The only real changes in the original French text are in Stanza 2 – Tenia rampells de poeta He had a talent for poetry i a voltes es feia el saberut. So sometimes he wanted to be smart. The prehistoric man finishes by saying that this was all before the war where everything blew up. There’s nothing to fear now, 3 million years later, as there’s no more fallout now. The original EP received the Prix Aznavour in 1966. The Dailymotion complete sample uses a variety of slides: mostly photos of prehistoric skulls & skeletons, paintings of caveman & caveman cartoons, museum exhibits, and a few caves – like the Grotte de Lascaux (Paleolithic painting of the fourth bull in the main hall and the one of the Chinese horse) and the Grotte de Niaux (the bisons in the Salon Noir). There is also the life-size caveman replica attacking two cave bears, which is on display in a cave at the Roque Saint-Christophe at Le Moustier in the Dordogne department. This song was later covered by the French popular singer Serge Reggiani and it was he who made it

great deal of success with it. This might have been the hit version of the song but I prefer Pierre Tisserand’s version; Reggiani doesn’t enunciate well. The YouTube sample starts with men digging a trench and then goes to shots of a lab technician manipulating the bundling fabric of a mummy. There are short scenes of prehistoric men running around or examining an object, all lifted from some caveman fiction film. It ends with shots of the A-bomb texts and then the statue of liberty sticking out of the beach from the 1968 film, Planet of the Apes. For the complete text see LY-WD30. The Pont d’Arc is a limestone natural bridge, actually a cave remnant, which spans the Ardèche River at the northwestern end of the famous Ardèche Gorge. Jean Pierre (whose family name remains unknown) used to perform at the Auberge Dingue upstream from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc on the road D579 to Ruoms. The old restaurant Auberge Dingue, now called, Le Pont des Mages, is located right next to this bridge. The flip side of this 45 has another song by Jean Pierre, which celebrates the valley of the Ardèche (see above WD-FR-FK1). Many verses here begin with “Du fond du…“ [From the bottom…], implying that her message is dipping down under, going into the depths. Stanza 2 for instance – Du fond des océans où chantent les baleines From the bottom of the ocean where whales sing Du fond du gouffre où veille un homme des cavernes From the bottom of the pit where a caveman watches Du fond des forêts où rôde le loup From the depths of the forest where the wolf prowls Du fond des mines où rôde le grisou. From the bottom of the mines where firedamp roves.

Then there is the chorus, which ends with – Y a cette veine bleue, sur ta tempe, qui me fait si peur There’s that blue vein on the temple, which scares me Petite rivière souterraine qui vient s´ jeter dans mon cœur Small underground river that comes an’ flows in my heart Qui vient s´ jeter dans mon cœur. That comes an’ flows in my heart.

Here again the lyrics go under, underground, comparing the veins that carry blood through the body to cave rivers. The last stanza ends with a call from the depths of remorse and anger. In 1992-1996, Michèle Bernard worked with Anne Sylvestre in Anne’s musical comedy for children, Lala et le Cirque du Vent, where Michèle acted and sang. At the start of her career Michèle was much influenced by the songs of Anne Sylvestre and later in the 1980s the two singers often performed on the same stage during festivals and co-recitals. (Lehoux 1997) In this connection it is quite interesting to note that Michèle sings here in the chorus about an “underground river” and 4 years later Anne Sylvestre wrote an entire musical for children entirely inspired by the famous resurgence, Fosse Dionne (see under Popular Music – France – Ivonne et Toinou PO-FR4).
