Types of propaganda: —songs, pamphlets —cartoons (print and film)—and of course…posters!

How much of an effect did propaganda have on the outcome of the war?
Message, PurposeMen: patriotism, revenge, masculinity, volunteer Women: fear for family’s safety, take on new role, conserve
Children: victory gardens, recycle, help ration
In general: aimed at public’s emotions to warn, plead, encourage, prepare for a home/battlefield sacrifice
Why was propaganda needed to mobilize Americans?
How would it have differed from German, Russian, or British propaganda?
Identify the theme visible
in each poster.
Who is the intended audience for each poster?
How well does each poster get
its message across?
Why are some posters more iconic
than others?
Why were different posters created for the same audience?
Compare and contrast the emotions
you feel today looking at these posters and the
emotions someone in 1943 would have felt.
Who is the enemy and
how are they
portrayed?
How might they have depicted Americans in their own propaganda posters?

In what ways can propaganda be positive or negative?
How might your perceived role in the war be changed or strengthened based on propaganda?
How would the message(s) in propaganda posters have changed throughout the course of the war?
If there hadn’t been a propaganda campaign, how might have America’s involvement in the war been different? Could a lack of a campaign have led to a different outcome for the war?
What about propaganda today for the War on Terror? Can you think of propaganda for or against it? Do you think that has had an effect on current events?
Discussion Questions
WWII Propaganda Poster Create a unique propaganda poster for distribution during the
war using a combination of words and images.
It can be geared towards men, women, or children and can reference any aspect of the war (rationing, enlisting, anti-German,
anti-Japanese, patriotism, don’t gossip, find a factory job, etc).
The intended audience must be clear by looking at the poster.
The message must make the viewer feel something (angry, sad, patriotic, vindictive, scared, proud, or it can change their opinion
on their role in the war, etc).
You can type or draw the poster on an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper.
