Earth Hour is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness on climate change. This is when everyone is encouraged to turn off non-essential lights and appliances for at least an hour. Earth Hour is developed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and started at Sydney, Australia in 2007 and other countries followed the following year.

Last March 23, Tsuneishi Group’s 26 participants along with some participants from the different barangays of Cebu City join an Earth hour activity hosted by the Aboitiz Group of Companies. The activity started with a fun walk from Fuente Osmeña to Plaza Independencia. The program proper started soon after with the presence of the executives of the Aboitiz Group headed by its President and CEO Mr. Erramon “Montxu” Aboitiz and Cebu City Councilor Nida Cabrera who heads the council on environment. During the activity a video of the Earth hour history was also shown.

The event, promotes

the “I Will If You Will” campaign. A campaign challenging everyone to do their part in taking care of the environment beyond Earth hour. It encourages everyone to PLANT MORE TREES, PROPERLY SEGREGATE WASTE OR GARBAGE AT HOME AND AT THE OFFICE, USE RE-USABLE BIODEGRADABLE BAGS AND OR CONTAINERS INSTEAD OF USING NON-BIODEGRADABLE PLASTICS/CONTAINERS, CONSERVE ELECTRICITY AND

STICKING TO OUR BRAND!

SERVICE BEYOND EXCELLENCEBY T. A.

DEVELOPING PROPER ATTITUDE IN PROVIDING CUSTOMER SERVICE BEYOND EXCELLENCE, THEREBY CREATING A BRAND OF SERVICE THAT

IS UNIQUE TO TSUNEISHI-CEBU

Early this year THI-HRD, led by Education and Training In-charge Mr.

Dadito Rodrigo, proposed to Top Management a training scheme for THI and Affiliate Groups’ front liners who regularly deal and transact business with the company’s valued customers. The primary objective is to help enhance the company’s customer satisfaction approval ratings as conducted by THI’s Quality Control Group.

Through THI - QC Group’s cooperation and in partnership with Cebu-based Full Potential Training Center, the “Service Beyond Excellence – The Tsuneishi Experience” seminar is realized. The seminars are conducted between March and May in six batches of 35 participants each. The seminar module drives towards the improvement of the basic tools in dealing with clients such as communication and

presentation skills. It also engages the participants to develop their interpersonal and teamwork skills, as well as developing proper attitude in providing customer service beyond excellence, thereby creating a brand of service that is unique to Tsuneishi-Cebu.

The dates March 14 and 15 marked the start of the seminar-series. Of the 35 participants from the first batch, 2 were from ACCI, 2 from K&A, 2 from TAC, 2 from CASPI, 1 from TCI, and 26 from THICI.

Day One of the seminar focuses on communication and presentation skills where participants are briefly made to introduce themselves and their expectations of the seminar. This activity is followed by a role-play presentation on how to receive proper instructions from an owner-representative (OR) – the company’s most frequent client.

The highlight of the

seminar was the individual reporting, which transcended through Day Two. Every participant was given a random subject matter to discuss within a given timeframe. Through this activity, participants’ research skills were applied; their understanding on their assigned topics were tested, and the delivery of their reports were taken under positive criticism. Shortly thereafter, group case studies of “actual” factory situations concerning every “yard side” personnel were simulated. The audience from other groups freely and actively commented each of the groups’ role-play, and provided suggestions on what solutions or options may be done to corresponding scenarios. Another

activity focuses on developing

the “kaizen” attitude whereby each group was

tasked to determine several behavioral patterns at work and ways on how to improve them. The seminar ended through a collage-making group contest themed on the seminar’s title.

According to Mr. Rodrigo, “It is hoped that, through such activities, the Tsuneishi-Cebu brand should not only refer to the ship vessels that the factory make, neither just the company logo, nor the uniforms the employees wear. It should be a high standard of both product and work quality, which reflects on a daily basis through services we render to our clients.”

The second batch followed last March 21 and 22, and the third batch on April 17 and 18.

“WE ARE ALL WORKING AS A GROUP IN ORDER TO MEET EACH TARGET”ENGR. RUSSELL JOHN B. TRAVERO

HULL STEEL B- STEEL PROCESSING GROUPJOINED THI ON OCTOBER 16, 2006

Russell supervises the processes within the Steel Processing Group, which involves scheduling and promoting good quality of work before handing it over to the next process. He also monitors the status of steel processing per area by overseeing work input and output that includes man-hour consumption in order to evaluate the monthly costs of direct and indirect payments to the respective sub-cons

and or affiliates.Russell loves to play

basketball, listen to music and watch movies. He also likes to talk with friends and family members over beer, and on holidays, he spend most of his time with his family bringing the kids to the beach, playing with them at the park and at home as well as go to church.

A choice...“Way back college, we had

a plant tour where we were given a chance to take some glances of this prestigious and booming shipbuilding company, the Tsuneishi Heavy Industries (Cebu), Inc. At that moment, I have thought that it was not too easy to work with this company since it requires great skills. Because of that opportunity, it inspired me to be part of the company. Choosing THI was the best decision I have made.”

Job satisfaction...“Getting the support that

our group needs and with the support given to me from the rest of the team members of the Steel Processing Group gave me a sense of fulfillment towards work. The hard work that we have done as a

group resulted from a good teamwork which helped us meet our targets and made our Group Objectives Final Presentation in 2012 successful and hopefully this year as well.”

Growth through work...“In 2011, when I was given

an opportunity to take part in the First QC Problem Solving Activity, the strength to do the job lifted me up because of the trust and confidence shared by the team. Trust that they never give up in believing that things will be organized. Confidence, through their trust that I have this ability to organize things, and that indeed really was materialized.”

Working with our Japanese counterpart...

“The most important thing of working with our Japanese counterpart is that you must have some knowledge on speaking their own language, “Nihongo” (Japanese Language), or at least understand it. For the reason that we cannot afford to misunderstand or

be misunderstood while in a middle of a

problem or an interrogation. Also, working in a Japanese firm taught me the

importance of work by taking some challenges and solving those challenges by means of the step-by-step QC solving problem approach.”

Challenges at work...“Handling a large team

with different performances and work attitude was the biggest challenge that I have encountered. Dealing with different attitudes of different personnel is not an easy task. A great advice from my superior was the importance of learning to adjust and know how to deal with these different attitudes so I can motivate and manage my team well. I owe it to them and I would like to thank our Factory Gen. Manager of Hull Steel-B (HSB) Engr. Ramil Roa, HSB-Steel Processing Deputy Gen. Manager Engr. Richard Pitogo and Manager of Steel Processing Group Engr. Francisco Gloriba, for teaching and guiding me to become a better leader.”

Essential abilities...“Perseverance, patience

and dedication at work along with skills and outstanding performances are some of the essential abilities for employees of THI. As a Japanese company, it is understood that individual performance is important which means one has to PAGE 5 u

52 TRAINED FOR COMPETENT SAFETY & HEALTH SUPERVISIONBY RAFONZEL JANE RANESES

Seven from THI and 45 from affiliates/contractors/

subcontractors attended the seminar and training for Competent Safety and Health Supervision held last

February 20th-21st 2013 (16 hours) at THI Safety Training Center which was led and

facilitated by Engr. Fidelino Tinapay, PME – a DOLE-accredited Occupational Safety and Health Consultant and the proprietor of Five Star Safety & Health Consultancy – a DOLE-

accredited OSH training & testing organization. The participants were Field

Engineers, Safety Officers, Leadmen, Foremen and Supervisors.

This seminar/training aims to help THI develop competent leaders who are able to understand the equal importance of safety and production. These are the vanguard leaders who are now catalysts of dedication to safety. At the same time, they become familiar of the Philippine OSH standards that apply to the work. They also become knowledgeable of any potential or actual danger to health and safety in the workplace.

Some topics discussed by Engr. Tinapay were: Definition of a Competent Leader, Management and Technical Tasks, Desirable Attributes in a Supervisor, Tasks to Master by Supervisors, Integration of Management Task and Safety

& Health Functions, Strategic Tools for Supervisors, Motivational Techniques, Types of Supervisory Communication, Duties and Responsibilities, Accident Causation Theories, Hazard Recognition/Assessment & Control and Toolbox Meeting.

With the unparalleled importance of this training and the actual results, there will be another schedule for the same seminar anytime this year.
