EXPLANATION OF THE COAT OF ARMS OF BISHOP PETER MUHICH

In designing the shield, a bishop has an opportunity to depict various aspects of his own life and heritage and to highlight particular aspects of Catholic faith and devotion that are important to him. A diocesan bishop shows his commitment to the flock he shepherds by “impaling” his personal coat of arms with that of the diocese.

The coat of arms of the Diocese of Rapid City is represented on the left side of the shield. Three black triangular peaks, called piles, represent the Black Hills of South Dakota. They are peaked with shamrocks, a reference to Saint Patrick, the patron of the church in Lead, which served as the first cathedral of the diocese from 1902-1930. The gold background symbolizes the gold mined in the Black Hills and the wavy white line represents the Missouri River, which forms the eastern border of the diocese. The green region at the base of the shield represents the rich ranch land on which many South Dakotans rely for their livelihood. It is charged with a golden circle reminiscent of the Lakota people and their belief in the interconnectedness of all created things.

The personal coat of arms of the bishop is represented on the right half of the shield. The top left section of the coat of arms of Bishop Muhich has a blue background with a star, representing Our Lady, who is the patroness of both the Diocese of Duluth (Our Lady of the Rosary) and the Diocese of Rapid City (Our Lady of Perpetual Help). It also represents Our Lady of Fatima, whose memorial on May 13th is also his birthday. The red keys represent his namesake, Saint Peter. The coat of arms of the Diocese of Duluth is represented in the lower blue section with the yellow cross. The miner’s lantern represents the Iron Range of Minnesota, where Bishop Muhich grew up.

The motto is inscribed on the scroll below the shield. The phrase is taken from the words of the Lord to his apostles at the Last Supper, after he had washed their feet: “Exemplum Dedi Vobis” (“I have given you an example.” John 13:15)

Lakota deacons and elders of our diocese lead us in this prayer, asking God to cleanse, purify and bless us. Our prayers rise like the smoke from the burning sage. We pray the Song of the Four Directions to ask for God’s mercy for all people and for all of creation. The congregation is invited to face the four directions, following the example of those leading the ritual. We will begin facing west.

RITE OF ORDINATION Remain standing

HYMN VENI SANCTE SPIRITUS (Come, Holy Spirit)

CATHEDRA The chair where Archbishop Hebda is seated during the Ordination Rite was the original episcopal chair (cathedra) taken from the first Cathedral in Lead, SD.

PRESENTATION OF THE BISHOP-ELECT Please be seated The Diocesan Administrator, on behalf of the priests of the Diocese, formally asks Archbishop Hebda to ordain Fr. Peter M. Muhich as bishop for the Diocese of Rapid City.

READING OF THE APOSTOLIC MANDATE Archbishop Christophe Pierre, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, reads the letter of appointment from Pope Francis.

WITNESS OF THE CONSULTORS/CHANCELLOR CONSENT OF THE PEOPLE The letter is then shown to the Diocesan College of Consultors, a group of priests who assist the Bishop in the canonical administration of the Diocese in the presence of the Chancellor of the Curia. They certify the authenticity of the papal appointment. The letter is then shown to the congregation. The assembly voices its consent by standing and acclaiming: Thanks be to God.

HOMILY Please be seated

EXAMINATION OF THE BISHOP-ELECT

Bishop-elect Muhich is questioned before the people as to his commitment to uphold the faith and fulfill his duties.

LITANY OF SUPPLICATION Please stand

Archbishop Hebda calls the assembly and the whole Church to pray for the bishop-elect through the intercession of the saints. On behalf of the Lakota people of the diocese, Bill and Terri White place a star quilt on the floor. The pattern is inspired by the Morning Star, the last and brightest star in the eastern horizon before dawn, a link between the living and those who have passed. It represents honor and generosity.

Bishop-elect Muhich prostrates himself in a gesture of humble submission in prayer while the assembly kneels.

Please kneel

LAYING ON OF HANDS Please stand

Through the laying on of hands as recorded in the scriptures, Archbishop Hebda and all the bishops call down the Holy Spirit. The bishop-elect is made anew in the likeness of Christ, the head and leader of the Church. Bishop Muhich becomes one with his brother bishops in union with the Holy Father.

PRAYER OF ORDINATION

The Book of the Gospels is placed over the head of Bishop Muhich. This ancient ritual is a reminder to the new bishop that he accepts the yoke of the gospel of which he is called to proclaim and preach. Archbishop Hebda and all the bishops pray the Prayer of Consecration.

ANOINTING OF THE HEAD Please be seated

Chrism oil poured over the head is a symbol of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual blessings poured on the new bishop in his Ordination to the fullness of the priesthood of Jesus Christ.

HANDING ON OF THE BOOK OF THE GOSPELS AND THE INSIGNIA

Bishop Muhich receives the Book of the Gospels. As bishop of our diocese he will be the primary proclaimer and preacher of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Bishop Muhich receives the signs of his office. His ring reminds him of his fidelity to his bride, the Church of Jesus Christ. The crosier (staff) recalls his responsibility as spiritual shepherd of the Church. The midter (hat) represents the dignity of his office as one made anew in the likeness of Christ, the head of the Church.

SEATING OF THE BISHOP Please stand

Bishop Muhich takes possession of the Diocese of Rapid City and is led to the cathedra (chair), the symbolic place from where he will lead the diocese.

The acclamation is repeated: Music is included on page 10 Laudate Dominum, laudate Dominum Omnes, gentes, alleluia.

KISS OF PEACE Please be seated

His brother bishops now offer Bishop Muhich a sign of Christ’s peace and a welcome to the Order of Bishops.
