FOCUS ON WORSHIP ALL SAINTS DAY: The custom of commemorating all of the saints of the church on a single day goes back at
least to the third century. All Saints Day celebrates the whole communion of saints and the baptized people of God,
living and dead, who make up the Body of Christ. It is the custom of many congregations to remember the faithful
who have died. This may include a reading of the names of our loved ones who have died during the past year
during the past year. The color of the day is white.
CHRIST THE KING: This is the last festival Sunday of the Church year. This festival celebrates the kingly rule
of Christ, who was enthroned upon the cross and will return as humankind’s ultimate sovereign and judge. As we
gather at the Table of Christ, we wear the crown of baptism and trace Jesus’ royal sign (the holy cross) over our
brows and bodies. We leave Worship strengthened to serve those in need. We look for the day when all people
will see Christ with the scepter of peace and the crown of justice. The color of the day is white.
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT: The new Church year begins today. We light the first candle on the
Advent wreath. The days of Advent point us toward the three comings of the Lord Jesus: (1) He came among
us at Bethlehem; (2) He comes among us now; (3) He will come again in glory. Keep awake, for His coming
is certain and His day draws near! The color for the Season of Advent is blue.

A Note from Pastor Fred
Thanksgiving
1953
When my grandparents became ill, my father took his family into their house - the very
house where he was born - to care for them. I was three years old but I can still remember a
memory flash of that day: standing in the kitchen looking up at all the tall people as they hauled
our belongings through the kitchen door. My aunt took my brother and me out to play to get us
out of the way.
Within a year my grandfather passed away and my grandmother continued to live with us
for the next eight years between extended stays at the hospital for a variety of illnesses. Once a
week she would walk a mile to the bus stop for a trip downtown and return with a bag of honey
dip doughnuts for us to eat. She lived on a rather meager social security check but she spent
most of it on my brother sister and me.
In the last year of her life she entered into dementia which was both confusing and frighten-
ing to me. Her memory would come and go and there were times when she would look at me
and ask me who I was.
Thanksgiving of 1953 arrived and I recall my mother giving my grandmother some simple
tasks to do knowing that she would want to help. Everything was going so well and when we
finally sat down at the table, she looked around with tears in her eyes and told us how happy
she was to have us all around the table with her. After our plates were full and we were ready
to eat, she stared at all of us and demanded to know who we were and why were eating her
food. In a sudden loud outburst she told us to get out of her house - now! My body froze in
fear and I felt my father's hand on my shoulder. In less than a minute my grandmother smiled
and asked for the cranberry dish to be passed to her.
She died the following year on her birthday. After the funeral our house was packed with
relatives and friends so I wander outside and sat on a hill that over looked the sprouting
asparagus that was coming up in the bed that my grandfather had planted many years ago. I
wondered; what grandmother was in heaven: the one that could remember or the one who knew
no one when she died. It was then that my very pious aunt came out and sat next to me. She put
her arm around me and told me how happy my grandmother must be right now seeing God and
being with her husband and the three children she had who died in infancy.
And so it was that I learned on that day what a wonderful thing it is when someone's faith
comes to your rescue. The confusion of Thanksgiving Day, 1953 was replaced by a new vision
of my grandmother gathered around a new table remembering all things with a clarity that
would never again be taken away.
Peace,
Pastor Fred

From Pamela McClain Director of Music
Report from the Paley Festival
As we saw from the list of attendance in the October newsletter, this year the Paley Festival drew 555 people in three days of concerts, 200 more than last year’s Festival. A number of previous St. Luke
members were sighted! Saturday night’s concert of a sacred mass by the opera composer Rossini, with members of the Richmond Symphony Chorus and their conductor, Erin Freeman, along with Mr. Paley and organist Daniel Stipe and four soloists, made a resounding and joyful noise in our
beautiful sanctuary, an evening that will be memorable for the 267 people who attended.
Many thanks to those who helped out during the festival: David Hahn for building a beautiful podium for the conductor, Dale for managing the “house” inside the building, the parking crew (Henry, Vince, Marty, Bill K.) for Saturday night’s full house, Marlys and Sim for shuttle work and providing cold
refreshment each night. Marlys also helped out the 37 musicians filling the choir room wing. Thanks to choir members who handed out programs and held the baskets.
Thanks to our photographer, Evelyn, and to all the members who put the space back to rights after Saturday’s concert. It was great to see so many SLLC members in the audience. St. Luke members
gave generously. And, lastly, blessings on St. Luke for providing beautiful space for rehearsals and concerts.

From Pamela McClain Director of Music
Advent is such a hopeful season, as well as a season of great, great music. I particularly love the
Advent hymns of the Lutheran hymnals, which I was first introduced to in the 1990s in Boston.
In the two Lutheran churches I served the singing of hymns was a joyous ritual. Lutherans
somehow grow up with an inherited enthusiasm for singing hymns. I love the Lutheran hymns
that come from Swedish folk tunes with grand names (the names, always printed in all caps,
refer to the tune and not the text): HAF TRONES LAMPA FÄRDIG, which is “Rejoice, Rejoice,
Believers” and has the phrase “Up, pray and watch and wrestle.” BEREDEN VÄG FÖR HER-
RAN, translated “Prepare the Royal Highway.” I love the hymn “Hark! A Thrilling Voice is
Sounding!”
Hark! A thrilling voice is sounding!
“Christ is near,” we hear the cry.
“Cast away the works of darkness,
All you children of the day!”
Startled at the solemn warning,
Let the earthbound soul arise;
Christ, its sun, all sloth dispelling,
Shines upon the morning skies.
See the Lamb, so long expected,
Comes with pardon down from heav’n.
Let us haste, with tears of sorrow,
One and all, to be forgiv’n;
So, when next he comes in glory
And the world is wrapped in fear,
He will shield us with his mercy
And with words of love draw near.
Finally, the German spiritual song, “O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide,” which speaks of
“mighty stride,” “dreadful doom” and “grope in gloom.” How can one not love the muscular
words of these hymns! The tunes are singable and have interesting meters. Lutheran hymnody
is rich in treasures!
On Saturday, October 31st, during the Talent Show portion of the Arts Festival, we were once
again given the gift of Pastor Fred’s organ improvisation talent, in a moving tribute to his dad
that included --- wait, how is that possible? -- a bagpipe! And, were you one of those in the
audience who were completely blown away by a big surprise: Jim Fenerty’s singing of ancient
Italian songs. How far can a rock-n-roller go? The Arts Festival displays of gorgeous crafts,
sewing, artwork and funwork, stained glass, photography and fancy cakes was a great delight
and thoroughly inspiring. The canes carved by SLLC’s founding pastor, Rev. Kinser, were on
display. It was a joy to share our gifts and hobbies and learn a bit more about each other.
The following day, All Saints’ Day, we made a joyful noise with all of the combined forces of
singers, bell ringers and instrumentalists. We used the organ, piano, trumpet, tuba and snare
drum. We processed in our brand new gorgeous gold stoles, a gift from four memorial funds, to
which we are deeply indebted. I was proud to be a part of this celebration of the lives and faith
of St. Luke’s members, past and present.

Flower Dedications
The Ministry of flowers is an important part of
the Sunday Service at St. Luke Lutheran. Flowers
are used to beautify our sanctuary and are a gift
to God and those who attend worship services.
Altar flowers may be dedicated to “The Glory of
God”, “In Memory of” a loved one or “In Honor
of” a special person, an anniversary, birthday,
birth, baptism or other special event. More than one person may
find a certain date important so flowers may be given in more than
one name on any given Sunday.
If you would like to donate and dedicate flowers for any Sunday
service, arrangements cost $27.00 each. You will be billed directly
from Coleman Brothers Flowers and the flowers will be delivered
to the church. The flowers are yours to take home after the service
that Sunday or you can ask that they be taken to one of our ill or
homebound members. Please sign up on the flower chart located
in the fellowship hall. Please contact the church office or Jean
Stewart if you have any questions. Thank you.
The 2015 Flower Chart is up in the fellowship hall.
If you haven’t signed up yet to provide Sunday altar flowers, won’t you consider doing so ?
Please contact Tammy in the office at 804-272-0486 or Jean Stewart at 804-276-2690 if you have any questions or would like more information.
Do you have something
for the next Church Newsletter?
The December 2015 Newsletter Deadline is November 10th. Please call in or e-mail in your submissions with all November meeting dates and notices to Tammy in the church office as soon as possible. We need to add your events to the church calendar as well. Thank you. Tammy Office phone and email address: 804-272-0486 [email protected]

Sunday Worship services are a very important part of our church life here at St. Luke. We also have Altar Guild members who set up for Sunday services and communion, Altar Bread Bakers, Chancel Choir members, Bell Choir members, Musicians and many other Committee Members who serve the Lord and St. Luke by providing their time, talents and energy. We are so thankful to have these folks assist us every week but we can always use more help.
If you are interested in serving and would like more information about these or other opportunities to be a part of our Worship and Music Ministry, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Pastor Fred Marcoux, Tim Hesson or Vince Reedinger for more information about Worship. Please contact our Director of Music, Pamela McClain for information about Music.

The very popular opera, “La Boheme” is coming to Richmond in November!
After the service on Nov. 15, Pamela McClain, our Director of Music, will present a
preview of the opera “La Boheme” by Puccini.
The opera is on Nov. 22 at 2:30pm. We will be purchasing group
tickets. Last year the price per ticket was about $35.00. The plan
for Sunday, Nov. 22 is to go to lunch as a group, then on to the
theater. Please join us this year! Everyone is welcome. Please
advise Tammy in the church office if you plan to attend the opera so we can get tickets
early before they sell out. Office 804-272-0486, [email protected]

September 2015
September 2015 Demonstrate your thankfulness this season
Now, with fall and harvest time drawing near, people start to reflect upon the things they are thankful for
and how they can show their gratitude by supporting others. During this time, St. Luke Lutheran Church
anticipates and relies on a seasonal increase in contributions. It is through the donations of every individual and
family in the congregation that we are able to carry on our ministries now and throughout the year.
One way Thrivent members who are eligible to participate in the Thrivent Choice® Program can do this is by
directing Choice Dollars® to their churches. The Choice Dollars grant funds your church receives will help you
continue to minister to others, strengthen communities and change lives. The Thrivent Choice (SM) program
lets members recommend where some of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' charitable outreach funds go by
directing Choice Dollars(SM). The amount of Choice Dollars designated to you depends on the type of Thrivent
Insurance products you have that qualify.
If you need a convenient way to make recurring contributions or plan to make an additional gift before the
end of the year, we encourage you to check out Thrivent’s Choice Dollars program. Do you need additional
information? Log in to Thrivent’s website, www.thrivent.com/thriventchoice to find out more. Once there, you
can choose how to direct Thrivent Choice Dollars to send them to a charity of your choice. When doing so we
ask that you consider designating St Luke Lutheran Church.
Thank you for your generosity and support.

The Angel Tree Collection for Envoy of Stratford Hills residents
begins November 15, 2015 Won’t you help make someone’s Christmas merry and bright this year?
Each year, St. Luke partners with a local nursing home, to help give their residents gifts to lift their spirits during the Christmas season. This year we are giving to Manor Care on Hilliard Ave. Please help us keep this time honored tradition alive with generosity and love.
Please pick up your Angel from the Angel Tree beginning Nov. 15th. Buy and wrap the present(s) requested. Return and place them underneath the Angel Tree by Sunday, December 13th. Contact Dana Wiggins at 475-0077 if you have any questions or if you lose your angel. Thank you for participating again this year!
