Reflections from our Associate in Ministry (AIM)Reflections from our Associate in Ministry (AIM)Reflections from our Associate in Ministry (AIM)Reflections from our Associate in Ministry (AIM)

Dear Friends,

As believers in Christ, we know that the grave is not the end. The final chapter of our lives is not failing health and death, but rather the resurrection to life everlasting. On All Saints weekend, November 5th and 6th, we will read names of those who have died this past year, and were been buried through the ministry of EPLC. We will light a candle and ring a chime in their memory. It’s a time of prayer, thanksgiving, and remembrance. Some of these dear saints had suf-fered long illnesses, and others were taken without any warning. Some of these names will be familiar to you, and some will not. In addition to officiating at services for members, we also officiate at services for family members when request-ed, and we minister to families from the community in their time of loss. Some may have a past connection with EPLC, others may have drifted away from their church, and others just never had a church home. Many of their family mem-bers have begun worshipping with us on a regular basis and have found EPLC to be a safe haven for them. They have found a warm, welcoming community who surrounds them in love and have found a place to nourish their faith. Through all life’s challenges, EPLC remains faithful in being a beacon of light and hope by proclaiming the love and grace of God to a hurting and broken world. All Saints Day gives us a time to especially remember, and give thanks for, all of our loved ones and friends who now rest with God. We light a candle in their memory and reflect on all the ways our lives have been touched by them. As we enter into this Thanksgiving season, we give thanks to God for our many blessings and for his constant provision. We give thanks for all the people he has placed in our lives that stand beside us as faithful witnesses to the Gospel, and today we stand with all the saints who have gone before us, and all who will follow after us, at the foot of the cross.

Blessings, Carole Edwards, Associate in Ministry

Update from our TreasurerUpdate from our TreasurerUpdate from our TreasurerUpdate from our Treasurer———— Our ministry is strong and the Council is committed to growing it. Thanks for responding to our requests for help, gen-erously supporting the many ministries of Edison Park. It is with your help that the church can continue to have grow-ing, thriving programs and activities. It helps pay the light bill, heating and care of the building as well. As of September 30, we are $26,590 below plan on income. Expenses are $29,782 above plan. So, the net result is $56,372 below plan. With the help of the Foundation through September, the net balance in the General Operating Fund was -$4,980. BIG PICTURE: We are continuing to rely on the Foundation more than we planned. Thank you to the Foundation for the additional help. This year, EPLC and the Foundation are both stepping up to our Mission Statements. EPLC: “To be a people living, loving and serving as Jesus did.so that all may know him.” Foundation: “To support the mission of Edison Park Lutheran Church in a life-giving way.” RECENT TRENDS: Envelope giving is lessening, while electronic giving (Simply Giving and credit card gifts) are increasing. A Minute for Mission with MattA Minute for Mission with MattA Minute for Mission with MattA Minute for Mission with Matt A few weeks ago, I saw the musical Hamilton. Hamilton is the 2015 smash-hit musical about the life of American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and the work he did in America’s earliest days. What stuck with me most was the end. It didn’t end with fireworks and a Hamilton pa-rade. Instead, it ended with Hamilton’s death after a duel with Aaron Burr (3rd Vice President of the United States). Hamilton’s wife, Eliza, and the entire cast leave the audi-ence with a question: ”Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story?” That phrase has almost haunted me since first hearing those lyrics. Who lives? Who Dies? Who Tells your Story? We all live and then we die – no way in getting around that! The question is – what is the legacy that we will leave here on earth? What is the story that we want those who come after us to tell? I do think it is important question. Not necessarily to only focus on the legacy we will leave behind. More though on the legacy we will leave from the current life we are leading, Luckily for us in the Christian tradition, we have the Bible as a guide for how to live our lives. Our Basic Instructions Be-fore Leaving Earth. One great parable of Jesus’ regarding our legacy, comes from Matthew’s Gospel (Matthew 25: 31-46). In this parable, Jesus tells the story of the sheep and the goats. During the end days, we will each be named a sheep or a goat. The sheep will inherit the Kingdom. The goats on the other hand, will be cursed into the eternal fire. The sheep did the good deeds of the Father while on earth. They fed the hungry. They gave drink to the thirsty and clothed the naked. They welcomed the stranger and

visited the sick. They visited the imprisoned and buried the dead. The goats did not. They lived for themselves and did not see Jesus in their neighbors. So which do you want to be – a sheep or a goat? I hope that the answer was easy, you silly sheep! And the best part? It doesn’t require anything outrageous for us to do. No heavy lifting required. God doesn’t send us out into a war zone. He doesn’t say move to a new country. He doesn’t say build me a mighty palace. No, the things God tells us to do can be done a daily basis. It all begins with a four letter word – love. Love those around you and do something nice for them. That’s a great place to start. We have been given great responsibilities while here on earth. God has given us of us free-will which can lead our hearts and minds down so many different paths. Some paths that are glorious and others that are destructive. Chances are, we will choose a little of each path during our lives times. Good or bad, all these paths will be written into our own narratives and legacy’s once we are gone. They will also serve as a ticket to the train with the sheep or the train with the goats. Alexander Hamilton wasn’t a perfect man. Not everything he did he wanted included in his legacy. However, the good outweighed the bad enough for his story to be told for generations. And just like Hamilton, we have that choice in our lives. Let our prayer be that each of us will life a live worthy of the sheep. A life that not only is worthy of a legacy here on earth, but an eternal life in Heaven as well.

I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual—Henry David Thoreau

The holiday season is upon us. While we, as Christians, look forward to celebrating the birth of Jesus, the commercialism

that overtakes the Christmas season can be overwhelming and obscure the true “reason for the season.” Thanksgiving

often times becomes completely overlooked. Almost as an afterthought whose purpose seems to be to “kick off’ the holi-

day shopping season. We should all take this time to cherish the gifts with which we have been blessed. Bill Gates advises

that we have all likely heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but that there is another day we should be aware of: Giv-

ing Tuesday. The idea is that, on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, shoppers take a break from their gift-buying and donate

what they can to charity. You can donate your time, your money or other resources. It is a day to contemplate and share

the blessings we have, before we get completely engrossed in the Christmas season.

We encourage you to take the opportunity to give on this upcoming Giving Tuesday. That can include a gift to the Edi-

son Park Lutheran Foundation, but give what you can, in whatever form, to a worthwhile charity this season Share your

blessings as you are able. Have a blessed and Happy Thanksgiving and Giving Tuesday from the Edison Park Lutheran

Foundation Board of Directors..

Our November selections, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins tells the story about Rachel who is a woman who considers her-self worthless because she is barren and rather plain looking. Unbeknownst to her landlady she has lost her job but continues to ride the commuter train twice a day. Un-fortunately she must pass her prior home where her ex-husband Tom now lives with his new wife, Anna, and baby. Rachel, in her despondency, has taken to drinking to a point where she has blackouts and forgets that she drunk calls her husband many times a night and even shows up at his home. Because of a signal malfunction she often finds her rail car stopped on the tracks next to her former home. She starts to notice another couple who live a few doors down. She refers to them as the golden couple and manufactures a narrative about their lives as she observes them each day. They gradually become important to her. But when Megan (of the Golden Couple) disappears Ra-chel finds herself an integral character in the police inves-tigation. She was seen stalking the neighborhood the night of the disappearance. She has wounds on her body that can't be explained and Megan and Anna look enough alike that the police feel there may be mistaken identity involved. The fact that Rachel has a history of drunken blackouts and has a hard time separating fact from fiction makes her overtly suspect, even to herself. Megan has plenty of secrets of her own and Anna - is she the perfect second wife she appears to be? Don’t miss discussing this book (and now out as a movie)

at our next meeting. It’s sure to be exciting!

Receiving a gift at the Annual Christmas Party is something the chil-dren of the Little Learner's Academy at Holy Family School look for-ward to each year. Once again, we have the opportunity to provide gifts for the Pre-K children this year. The Welcome Table will have boy/girl nametags for you to attach to your gifts. The presents should be wrapped and returned to church by Friday, December 9th. The amount spent for gifts should be around $15 and should not include cosmetics, clothing, gift cards, or anything of a violent nature. Suggestions include Legos or other building toys, and learning games or activities. Thank you for considering this request and helping to make the Christmas Season bright for the pre-school children at Holy Family!

Collecting for VetsCollecting for VetsCollecting for VetsCollecting for Vets

We will be collecting donations of comfort items for the Edward Hines Veteran Hospital, beginning now and leading up to Thanksgiv-ing. The donations as they arrive are to be placed on the table at the rear of the sanctu-ary. Judi Eastwood is preparing copies of the lists for comfort items and they will be availa-ble at the Welcome Table. I will collect the donations as they come in and store them until delivery time, so as not to crowd the church.

We will also be collecting home baked goods and snack items for the O'Hare airport USO for Thanksgiving. The USO donations will begin on Sat. Nov. 19th and end on Thanks-giving. We know not everyone will be attend-ing Thanksgiving services, so a decision was made to start collecting prior. Those dona-tions will also be placed on the table at the rear of the sanctuary. I have already given all of this information to Judi. She will print it in the next newsletter and weekly bulletins as space permits. We also discussed a future project for the Hines Hospital - Fisher House. Considerations were given to comfort items and donations of food with volunteers for preparing a meal. We decided to table this project until springtime when the weather and road conditions would be better for the drive to Hines. There was other projects dis-cussed as well for future consideration. I men-tioned to everyone that night how I thought we would get a better donation response of items from members rather than to ask for money. We especially want to thank everyone for their generous donations of home baked goods and snacks to the USO on 9/11.
