CAMPUS UPDATE
Time to repair Webster Chapel, the Parlor and several classrooms in the Christian Education Center are ready for repairs. The rooms, which suffered water damage after Hurricane Irma, have been dried out by remediation specialists and the damaged surfaces, including drywall and flooring, were removed. Please consider how you can help in our campus renovation. Hurricane insurance deductibles are high, so your donations are vital to our effort. Our estimated costs may exceed $400,000, even after insurance is factored in. Stop by the Parlor after worship to see some of the extensive work that needs to be done.
REFORMATION SUNDAY
Special musical selections In recognition of October 31 as the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, two of today’s hymns, as well as the musical offering by Moorings Ringers, come from the early Reformation. Martin Luther, whose heart for church reform launched the Protestant Reformation, penned both the words and tune of A Mighty Fortress Is Our God. Luther used Psalm 46 as a starting point, and expanded upon the Psalm text, giving the hymn a clearly Christian theme, with Christ as Victor over evil. The final hymn, All People That on Earth Do Dwell, is in the Calvinist (Reformed, Presbyterian) tradition, and is an English translation of Psalm 100, which had a new tune and French translation in John Calvin’s Genevan Psalter. The hymn before the sermon also has a connection to the Reformation, as contemporary hymnist David Gambrell wrote the text of Great God of Every Blessing in 2009 for the 500th anniversary of John Calvin’s birth. The note in our hymnal indicates that “…this text sums up [Calvin’s] liturgical theology, ending each stanza with his motto,” here translated as: “Sincerely and completely I offer you my heart.”
