WORSHIP SCHEDULE

When Are We, Really?
The start of a new calendar year has me once again thinking about the
many ways of counting time. (Long-time members will recall that I
established my calendar fixation right up front, when I began my tenure
at JCMI four years ago this month, and nothing has changed since).
This month, of course, represents the start of a new cycle for almost all
of us. As we watch the ball drop in Times Square, whether January 01
is Año Nuevo in Madrid or Shogatu halfway around the world in Tokyo,
as the culmination of the Shinto Gantan Sai holiday, any way you slice
it a New Year has kicked off as what we all earnestly hope will be a
fresh start for humanity.
For the Mahayana Buddhists, however, the new calendar year starts a
little later this month: not on the first day of January, but on the first full moon, which
this year falls on Saturday the 11th. And on the Chinese calendar used throughout most
of East Asia, the New Year begins two weeks after that, on the dark-of-the-night marking
the next ensuing lunar cycle. In the case of this month, the New Year 4718— which in
the twelve-year Chinese horoscope cycle is The Year of the Rat— begins Saturday the
25th. (Whether you, as an Island resident, prefer Jackie’s or Su’s Garden, make your
reservations early… and be sure to tip your server using a traditional red hongbao
envelope).
January is chock full of other occasions: religious (Twelfth Night and Epiphany on the
05th and 06th, respectively); administrative (World Leprosy Day— really!— on Sunday
the 26th); commemorative (M. K. King birthday observance on Monday the 20th); and
astronomical (terrestrial perihelion on January 05 finds us, paradoxically, closest to the
sun in the coldest depth of mid-Winter). But of all these milestones in the calendar’s
passage of time, the one we arguably find most engaging is the one kicking off the New
Year.
Because the bottom line is that—regardless of whether you count it from the first day of
the month; the first full moon; or the first new moon— the prospect of turning over the
odometer and starting fresh is one that all of us find appealing.
Which is a marked advantage to being Jewish. Because our morning liturgy praises God
as the One Who בטובו מחדש בכל יום תמיד מעשה בראשית
is gracious enough constantly to renew daily the works of Creation.
The psychology of our religion is that each and every one of gets a fresh start, each and
every day— not just in January, but in each and every month, as well.
The Rabbi is at your disposal, during his weekend stay on-Island, for counseling; hospital or shut-in visits; or Hebrew or guitar lessons— as well as accessible any time during the week by telephone 954-798-6037 or e-mail [email protected].
Yalkut Mordechai: Notes from Rabbi Gross

Fourth-Sunday
Life-Long Learning Series for 5780 (2019-20)
Sunday, January 26 - Open Season: “Ask the Rabbi.”
Here’s one where we don’t come up with a topic— you do! If there’s
ever been a question about Jewish history, ritual, language, belief, or
tradition that you really wanted to know about, bring it in for a no-
holds-barred firing line.
Sunday, February 23 - “The Reader’s Digest Torah.”
An exploration of Deuteronomy, the fifth book of the Torah. In the course of his farewell
address to the Israelite nation, Moses not only reviews but also expands in fascinating ways
upon all that went before.
Coffee social at 9:30, followed by class from 10:00 to 11:30.
No fee for JCMI members; guests are welcome, and asked to make a $5 contribution towards printing.

events coming up this month.

the film Not The Last Butterfly at South Regional Library in Naples - 8065
Lely Cultural Parkway.

the Shabbat Services in the week that they occur.
Yahrtseit Notices
Our policy at JCMI is to offer members the choice of recording Yahrtseit dates in accordance with the English or
Hebrew calendars.
If members choose to remember loved ones on their Yahrtseit using the English date of death, the Yahrtseit will
be observed each year on the Friday Evening of the week in which that English date occurs.
If the Hebrew date is chosen, the Hebrew date falls on a different English date each year. The Yahrtseit will be
observed each year on the Friday evening of the week when that Hebrew date occurs.
Please inform the office as to which date you observe the Yahrtseit of your loved one so that it can be properly
recorded in our records. I hope this clarified and eliminates confusion about our policy.

YMCA Reads! (Y-Reads!) is a literacy/mentoring nonprofit program provided by the
YMCA of South Collier (aka the Marco Y) that provides free literacy tutoring for
Elementary Students. It closes the gap in students' reading performance and the State
of Florida's reading performance expectations.
Volunteers can provide a critical service to the community.
As a volunteer/mentor, you will have an important role in shaping the academic future
of these students as well as helping to develop his/her self-confidence in an extremely
positive way.
*Training and ongoing support is provided by the Y-Reads! Coordinator
(Esta Alliker, Member of the Congregation).
*Time commitment: 2 afternoons per week either M & W or T & Th,
3:15pm - 5:15pm with flexibility as needed.
*Uses research-based programs that allow for progress based on
mastering specific skills.
*Students develop critical thinking skills as they express ideas about
important issues and increase their understanding of self and others by
making connections between what they read and what they experience.
*Program is at Manatee Elementary School, 1880 Manatee Rd. Naples
(about 5 miles from Marco Island).
