So, who do you say that I am? This powerful question caused a clear, well worded re- sponse from Peter. “You are the Messiah.” No equivocation on Peter’s part. Peter got his first promotion from Jesus when they met. Jesus said to him, “So, you are Simon, the son of John (“Simon Bar-Jona” in John 1:42, and then said from then on, he would call him Cephas, which is Aramaic for Peter, which is Greek for “Rock”. That “rock” quality shows up in his response to Jesus’ question this morning, “You are the Messiah”. You see, it took a lot of courage to say what Peter said and Jesus knew it. If it was true, it was enough to change everything in the lives of the Disciples all the way to the entire world. If it was not true, you could get yourself stoned to death as a blas- phemer. But Peter said it anyway and Jesus then made up a beatitude just for him! “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona, which means, once again, Simon, son of John. Jesus will, at some point soon, tell Peter that he in- tends to build the church on him (since he is the “Rock”) and in Matthew 16, gives him yet another promotion. “I will give you the keys of the Kingdom.” Peter has a long road to walk but, his answer today will help give him the courage to live a life that backs up his statement, “You are the Messiah!” So, who do you say He is?
