NEVILLE’S ISLAND Community DramaTue 19th Jul - Fri nd Jul Written by Tim FirthA Comedy in Thick Fog!Four out of condition middle management businessmen take part in a team building exercise in the Lake District with hilarious consequences. NODA award winners, Theatreworkz, bring you a comedy not to be missed. This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Samuel French Ltd. The Castle (Wellingborough)

HErITAgESat 3 Jul - Sun 4 JulHeritage is a specially commissioned play inspired by Corby’s history and its many diverse and eccentric characters. In the course of this visual, musical, comic and dramatic extravaganza, you will meet suffragettes, pickaxe-wielding women of the first world war, countesses, school marms and a whole social club of argumentative ghosts.Performed by Corby Women’s Theatre group alongside guests and musicians from the local community, and directed by renowned local playwright Paula Boulton, Heritage is a celebration of the people who made – and make – Corby what it is today. The Core at Corby Cube.

Penned by BAFTA award-winning Nick Fisher (the writer for TV series Manchild, Hustle and Holby City), Basket Case is a perfectly crafted, quick-witted contemporary comedy which rips the lid off a so-called

‘civilised’ modern divorce and reveals the dark and complex emotions that lurk beneath..

28 July – 6 auguSTWilliam Shakespeare’s peren-nial favourite Romeo and Juliet is being performed by Masque Theatre in the Elizabethan open-air setting of the court-yard of Abington Park Museum, Northampton. The venue lends itself to the atmosphere of the play and will be performed in period costume.

Though not actually a ‘trag-edy’ as described in the origi-nal title the story of the two ‘star-crossed’ lovers, played by young actors Ste Applegate and Lisa Neophitou, is one that most audiences would mostly name if asked to recall a Shake-

from opposing families, their love must be concealed until their marriage - a theme that is still relevant today. However Romeo is banished for hav-ing avenged the death of his friend Mercutio (Scott Bradley) and fate ensures that theirs is a wedding that will never take place.

Since it’s inception in 1932 Masque has performed Romeo &Juliet five times and this year Masque Theatre were also invited to be part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s 50th anniversary celebrations ‘Open

FRi 15 - SaT 30 JulyFollowing its sell-out success last year, Royal & Derngate is once again transforming the whole of the Derngate audito-rium into a giant children’s play-mat for a fantastic interactive show for children and families to enjoy together. Flathampton – which runs for a fortnight from Friday 15 to Saturday 30 July spanning termtime and school holidays – was created for Northampton audiences by the same team who produced the popular shows Wish Wash, Minibreak and Knitwits.

get on with life as best they can but everything in town is as flat as a pancake – from the sand-wiches in Paolo’s Café to the stethoscope on Doctor Zee’s desk. But when Kate comes back from the big city she brings a truckload of weird and won-derful solid objects for her old friends and introduces a new di-mension to life in Flathampton.

Flathampton will take you on an amazing interactive journey round the biggest playmat you will ever see, as you help Kate and the Flathamptonites to build up their town. You’ll collect your Flathampton money, spend it at the Flathampton shops, ice some Flathampton cakes at the café and you can even try your hand at taking photos for Flathampton News, or take part in a fashion show at the makeo-ver salon.

An event the whole family will enjoy, Flathampton is direct-ed by Royal & Derngate’s As-

sociate Director Dani Parr and was written by Daniel Jamieson, re-uniting the team that has worked on the theatre’s hugely successful interactive shows for under-6s which have taken place in Underground over re-cent years.

Flathampton takes over the Derngate auditorium from Friday 15 to Saturday 30 July. Weekday term-time perform-ances are ideal for early years (under 6s) and their families and along with schools and nurs-eries (tickets £6 each), while weekend and school holiday performances are suitable for children of all ages with their families (tickets £7 each)..

ART AND CULTURE NEAR YOU... SPONSORED BY CROFT WINGATES

CrOft WingateS art gallery, Wingates Walk 44a St Mary’s Road Market Harborough Leicestershire LE16 7DU. Tel: 01858 465455 email: [email protected]

Come in to Croft Wingates and see the great new ‘Summer Collection’ including originals, signed limited editions and sculpture from a broad spectrum of artists such as Rolf Harris, John Waterhouse, Timmy Mallett, Mia Tarney, Paul Horton and Mikki Longley. Sculpture from Julie Wilson, Michael Simpson, and David Ivey, Krystyna Sargent and many more. A large and varied collection of living, working artists are featured throughout the gallery.

Rolf Harris pictured here with John and Jenni of Croft Wingates is a regular con-tributor to the gallery. You will always find the very latest from Rolf Harris at Croft Wingates.

In the mid 1950’s, for two years running, some of Rolf’s paintings were featured in the Summer Exhibition at the Royal Academy. While painting

continued to be a private pas-sion of his, it was for his televi-sion and stage performances that Rolf became a household name. In recent years Rolf has devoted more time to painting and has had a number of one-man shows, including the Rolf on Art exhibition at the National Gallery.

Rolf’s BBC television series Rolf on Art achieved the highest television ratings ever for a UK arts programme. Rolf hosted television’s biggest ever Arts event with a live BBC special titled Rolf on Art: The Big Event, in which he joined the public in recreating a large-scale ver-sion of Constable’s ‘Haywain’ in

Trafalgar Square. The massive event was such a huge success that the BBC staged two further Rolf on Art: The Big Event spe-cials in Edinburgh and London.

Come in and see Rolf’s latest work and add to your art col-lection.

July 9 - AuguSt 21 It’s hard to smell the sea breeze so close to the middle of the country but this summer Northampton Museum will try to bring you a little whiff of it. Through the art of such celebrated painters as Frank Brangwyn and Dorothea Sharpe this exhibition will look at how we view the sea and the time we spend beside it.

As an island nation we have always been fascinated by the sea that surrounds us. The sea has produced food for our plates, jobs for our fishermen and political superiority for our navies. In the last three hun-dred years the sea has been a source of leisure and enjoy-

The exhibition will run from 9th July to 21st August. Entry is free and the museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm and 2pm-5pm on Sundays. For more information please call 01604 838111 or email [email protected]

July 9 - AuguSt 27Kettering’s Alfred East Art Gal-lery’s first major summer ex-hibition is ‘Of Land and Sea’ by artist and illustrator Chris Prout. The Welsh-born artist has work in collections throughout the UK and overseas. This will be Chris’s first solo show at the principal gallery in his adoptive home town. The opportunity was of-fered to Chris at last year’s Ket-tering Open Art Competition, where he won first prize and the public vote for his impres-sions of the Welsh coastline.

‘Of Land and Sea’ is an ex-pression of the artist’s twin ex-istence; of life in Northampton-shire and his native connection with South-West Wales. Chris describes the work as ‘impres-

Pete Morton is a Nottingham performer with a wealth of great songs and stage presence, dynamic and great fun, while folk-blues-jazz-country belter Sally Barker was the original lead singer of the Poozies, replaced by the now-stellar Kate Rusby.

Staged in support of Hope For Heroes at Harborough Town FC – to whom, a big well done! – with the help and advice of Madhatter Concerts’ Dave Allen – and the same to Dave! – the festival promises a fantastic day’s musical and real ale-based entertainment, though sadly the latter isn’t included in the ticket price of just £15! After his string of classic ‘70s hits was brought to a halt by serious illness, Steve Harley’s status as a rock icon over and above the faddishness of glam, prog and punk has only grown, and his return to the live scene in the ‘80s brought about a second lease of life. He’s been wowing audiences ever since with no signs of letting up, his total of 11 albums over four decades hinting at his depths

Current trends make the vintage brooch a highly desirable fashion accessory so why not have a rummage in the attic, or visit a local antique market to find a genuine bargain!

ne of the most chic pieces of ‘old’ jewellery to own is a vintage brooch. A designer piece is

guaranteed to be a great investment, a perfect choice when buying a gift of jewellery for someone special, as one-size-fits-all! It is also an ideal treasure to be left to a future generation (that is after you have thoroughly enjoyed wearing it yourself first!!).

For more affordable alternatives WOW takes a look at the high street, with thoughts of embellishing a festival outfit with a pin or two, knowing from experience that a pin always come in handy, and along with a pair of wellies is a festival essential!!

Brooches were originally a practical device, commonly used in past times for holding a cloak shut. Romans, Greeks, Celts and other tribes in Europe used brooches for just that purpose. The oldest brooches date back to the early Bronze Age. Eventually and more frequently they became used as embellishment, and on occasion - functional.

So I thought I would give you a few helpful holiday tips to get you ready and help you survive!!

We all think by exfoliating our skin, our holiday tan will come off quicker, however what most of you don’t realise is that by exfoliating regularly throughout, your tan will last longer as you are always tanning new skin cells.

You must protect the new skin though with a high SPF to avoid any sun damage to the new skin cells, as we protect our skin from free radicals that cause premature ageing.

Always reapply your Sunscreen throughout the day, especially if you are swimming, and try to keep a hat on to keep your face out the sun.

Important art treasure under the hammer

Tue 2 AugustFINE ART & ANTIQUES AUCTION Gilding’s, 64 Roman Way, Market Harborough, Leicestershire LE16 7PQ.Tel: 01858 410 414www.gildings.co.uk

The excitement of a potential bargain, sought-after treasures and beauty beyond reach are never far away at the Market Harborough institution of Gilding’s auctioneers. And early this month a brooch comes under the hammer in one of Gildings periodical Fine Art & Antiques sales which truly exemplifies the national standing of the auction house, together with its local reputation as a trusted expert – not to mention the potential of your very own jewellery box!

The brooch, by Victorian designer and architect William Burges, was discovered in the

jewellery box of Jill Cousins of Market Harborough, just hours after she meant to dispose of it locally “perhaps for £10.” Jill then saw the brooch described by BBC Antiques Roadshow jewellery expert Geoffrey Munn as his ‘most wanted’ item, and took it to Gilding’s to confirm her suspicions – leading to what Munn described as his ‘Tutankhamun Moment’.

Described as ‘one of the most important art historical objects ever to be seen’ on the popular antiques show, it has been provisionally valued by Mr. Munn at £10,000 – a thousand times beyond Jill’s expectations!

UNTIL OCTOBER 2011This year’s Igniting Ambition Festival for Northamptonshire showcases a diverse range of exceptional cultural projects, events and festivals celebrating the county’s rich cultural heritage, outstanding natural environment and hidden gems.

Igniting Ambition!

Aiming to engage young people and local communities, the festival introduces a number of new ambitious projects and partnerships such as FLOW, Formula Fashion and SHINE. As part of the Cultural Olympiad programme, it presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase to a national and

international audience the very best of the county’s cultural assets in advance of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The programme has been made possible through funding from Legacy Trust UK and the European Regional Development Fund, with

This August will see the first of the major FLOW commis-sions being delivered by envi-ronmental artist Steve Messam titled Seven Spires.

This exciting commission will see seven 4-metre high red spires installed in the Oxford Canal on the approach to the

Grand Union Canal junction and historic narrow boating village of Braunston, the heart of the UK canal system.

Seven Spires will be a strik-ing installation set against a backdrop of All Saints Church ‘the cathedral of the canals’ within rural Northamptonshire that explores the county’s re-lationship to its canal network and long-standing reputation for being ‘the county of spires and squires’. Through solar technol-ogy and LED lighting the spires will emanate a soft red glow

Igniting Ambition, a Cultural Olympiad programme in the East Midlands, invests in projects and people that take the London 2012 Games as their inspiration to create once-in-a-lifetime cultural opportunities for audiences and communities.

Igniting Ambition is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to create a cultural and sporting legacy from the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the European Regional Development Fund and the East Midlands Development Agency, with the support of Arts Council England and many others.

Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze opened on Saturday 16th July. Following a wildlife theme this year, the maze has been designed in the shape of a giant honey bee, complete with a hive. Hours of fun and entertainment for children and adults alike lie in store when exploring the gi-ant maze created out of 8 acres of living maize crop.

”The number of bumble bees has declined by around 70% since the 1970s, and honey bee numbers have fallen by 15% over the past two years according to official UK Government figures. Our 2011 Honey Bee Maze is designed to raise awareness of the plight of our bee populations and their importance to the envi-ronment, as well as providing a fun and educational day out for the whole family.“

“However it is not just our bee populations that need our help,” explains Diana Brooks, owner of the Wistow Maze. “Many other species are also under threat and our quiz trail this year will highlight other wildlife such as the dormouse, red squirrel and otter, with clues to be found amongst the 3 miles of intricate pathways cut into the maize.”

Winner of Leicestershire’s ‘Best Visitor Attraction’, the Wistow Maze attracts about

15,000 visitors on an annual basis. Situated just south of Leicester, the maze also incor-porates high level bridges and viewing towers giving visitors stunning 3D panoramic views of the complex maze and beautiful surrounding countryside.

The Wistow Maze is a great family day out. Having experi-enced the ‘real thing’, visitors can then take part in a variety of mini mazes, games and ta-ble top activities in the Activity Funyard. There is also a space hopper track, hoopla and foot-ball shooting game, with light refreshments available.

Opposite is the Wistow Rural Centre with a café/bistro, gar-den centre, model village, farm shop, aquatic centre and many shops selling furniture, gifts, jewellery and much more.

The Fox Inn

t’s no coincidence that The Fox in Wilbarston, just a few miles out of Market

Harborough on the Corby road, has scooped Pub of the Month plaudits for July, when country walks are in season and the views over the Welland Valley are at their most peaceful and inviting. And when you’ve fin-ished your perambulations, the quintessential English village pub

century, but Chris and Jess have just completed a refurbishment of the dining room, which now has a fresh yet traditional feel in keeping with the top-notch food on offer. The couple specialise in hearty, wholesome, locally sourced specialities such as home-made steak and kidney pudding or – our recommenda-tion – rich, traditional faggots from West Lodge Farm (£6.95). came from a little further afield, but it’s fresh in today and every day. From July, a new summer menu will be available featur-ing more seasonal treats, from fresh salmon to popular stir-fries. And a menu of light bites is available all day, with unbeatable deals for OAPs and children’s meals at any time.

No matter what day of the week, there’s a special attrac-tion at the Fox. Thursday is steak night, and Jess reports that the two-for-£12 rump or sirloin deal is “going down a storm.” Tuesday is Curry Club, where just £6.25 will secure you a drink and an Indian meal to rival the fare at any local res-

taurant. Wednesday is games night, with everyone welcome to take on the Wilbarston Wob-blers (“a drinking club with a running problem”), with crib on Monday and darts and skittles on alternate Wednesdays. And look out for live bands playing once a month between 4 and 7 on Sunday, immediately follow-ing The Fox’s popular traditional Sunday lunch. Booking is highly recommended.

Cooked to absolute perfec-tion, the menu covers all fishy bases from fresh beer-battered fish and chips – the most popu-lar dish, a true classic – all the way to lobster thermidor. Other popular dishes include crab ri-sotto and seabass with peas and pancetta... but to exemplify Tim Hillary’s belief in a real treat at the right price, look no further than the mixed platter of white-bait, calamari and king prawns for £8.95.

The menu board is constantly changing, and Tim makes the

WOW TAKES A LOOK AT THE LATEST DEALS ON WHEELS

A Crisp Fresh Look

The new Peugeot 308, launched in the UK in May, has a fresh look, pioneering technology and CO2 emissions from just 98 g/km.

Since its original creation in 2007 over 900,000 308s have been sold worldwide and, in this country, over 84,000 vehicles have been bought,

POSITIVE• Efficient• Easy to drive• Good load space

NEGATIVE• Soft suspension

making it the second most popular Peugeot model.

The new 308 has been unleashed into the UK market with all the up-to-the-minute styling elements already seen on the executive flagship model – the 508. It is available in three body styles; Hatchback, CC and SW, and four multi-model trim levels; Access, SR, Active and Allure. A range topping hatchback and CC (Coupe Cabriolet) THP 200 version

is also available in a single GT trim level.

A subtle face-change at the front, incorporating the latest LED headlamps and running lights gives the New Peugeot 308 a well-dressed and

contemporary appearance. All the dynamic and emotional strengths of the original Peugeot 308 have been kept and bolstered further with the introduction of more cost-effective engines and Peugeot’s

innovative micro-hybrid e-HDi Stop & Start system.

The French car-maker’s e-HDi Stop & Start wizardry is the latest generation technology and, combined with Peugeot’s class leading 1.6 litre HDi FAP 112 Euro 5 diesel engine, reduces CO2emissions to 98 g/km. This engine option is available with either a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed electronically controlled manual gearbox (EGC). This gives the 308 the lowest emissions in its class.

To ensure the New Peugeot 308 is as ‘green’ as possible, other factors affecting CO2 emissions have also been optimised; overall weight has been reduced by 25 kg across all models and 16” ultra low rolling resistance tyres have been fitted.

All variants feature air conditioning, ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System), and an assortment of other safety technologies, including child security, remote control central door locking with deadlocks, and six safety airbags.

The Peugeot 308 1.6 e-HDi 112 Active SW (Sports Wagon) - that’s an estate car to you and me – was the car I drove. The revised motor has an impressively refined engine and the fuel saving e-HDi Stop & Start technology works well; you almost forget the engine

has stopped when you’re waiting in a queue of traffic.

Behind the wheel, the car is easy to drive and it eats up the motorway miles effortlessly. It is also very agile when nipping around town. My only criticism is that the suspension is a bit spongy and the 308 oil-burner is not exactly fast (0-62 mph in 11.9 seconds), but the 62.7mpg average fuel economy, roomy interior, panoramic roof and accommodating load space more than make up for it. My test car also had a pair of removable third-row seats, transforming the 308 SW into a seven-seater – handy if you have lots of kids.

All things considered, I’d recommend the new 308. It’s practical, comfortable and very economical. It also looks fabulous with its new LED running lights. If you have a large family and you want a relatively affordable, cheap to run new car – then a Peugeot dealership might just be the place to start looking.
