It is so important to mark moments of victory! As we begin this new semester, stop and compare your child’s pre TCS attitude, communication, knowledge and self-esteem. Of course we do not expect huge leaps of growth, but a steady increase in the areas that brought so much frustration in previous schools is definitely worth a celebration. I do not have to sit in a class or join a lunch table to see the growth in our students. As I move around the campus I can see a distinct change in the way a student stands, walks, gives eye contact and smiles. For those of you who have been with us a while, it may be easy to take these changes for granted. Once a student begins to feel empowered and take more risks, the crises die down and the days take on a “normal” routine. School, sports, clubs, community activities, home, bedtime….they become the new normal and we may forget how far our kids have come and how hard they work to maintain their upward movement. It is important that we see the effort and that we see when the effort is not there. It is not unusual for a student who has attained a level 2 or 3 to have a spurt of “old behavior”…forget homework, return to a sloppy appearance, or take their friends for granted. That is when our staff will step in with feedback and encouragement. Reaching a higher level does not mean they can rest on their laurels and sustaining that newly found positive pattern can be exhausting. If we let our students who are held up as role models slide in their standards of performance, the entire system loses its teeth. Frequent feedback, accountability and communication keep our kids on track. Last weekend’s Homecoming brought so much of this concept home to me. I visited with former students who use their TCS skills every day! Their commitment to accountability, organization and responsibility has been imbedded in their daily routines. They continue to stand heads and shoulders above their peers at work because they go the extra mile, present solutions when problems arise and are generous with their talents. Many of our alumni are small business owners, preferring to manage their own environment. Others are skilled artists/professionals and others have joined the corporate world. This year we welcomed back teachers, welders, authors, sales representatives, sports videographers, store managers and more. We hosted their children who ranged from preteens to new borns! We met fiancés and spouses. Everywhere we looked we saw confidence and pride! Last week we said goodbye to Building A…the oldest building on campus. It began as a stable when the main house was built in the 1950’s. It was renovated and served as the daughter’s home for years. In 1987 it became our first classroom building and has served us well (as well as it could) for all these years. We will maintain the concrete slab, build a pavilion to shelter our car poolers and put a basketball goal at the other end for recreation. As we move closer to our dream of enhancing our athletic facilities, the plans for this space will become more firm. In the meantime, we bid a fond farewell for a job well done! This Friday we honor our SENIORS and their families. What a journey they have made and what a fabulous achievement they are approaching! This event officially kicks off the march to graduation!

Dear TCS Parents, Although it may be hard to believe, our sports calendar is nearly 2/3 complete for this academic year. All of the basketball teams are now preparing to cap off their regular season with playoff tournaments. For the first time, The Cottage School will host both the Middle School APAC and the High School Varsity AAC Tournaments. With that in mind, the Athletic Department has two areas of need. The first involves taking tickets/supervision for the Concession Stand. The second area involves food or beverage donations for the Hospitality Suite. Each tournament event includes a room with food and drink for the participating coaches, referees and conference officials . To date, some parents pledged water, sports drink and assorted snack items. We could certainly use more beverages (sports drink or water), fruit, nuts, sandwiches, dishes or any sort of finger food. Please send any donations to the front desk of your respective campus, with a notation that the items are for the MS or the Varsity tournaments If your schedule allows, please contact me ([email protected] or 678-250-5120) and let me know your availability, or donation items. Thanks to the help of our volunteers, Concession Sales netted over $1,600 in support of the Athletic Department! Thank you for your time and dedication. Sincerely, Lyle Cutchin Assistant Athletic Director
