Design

Free Cooling (FC)The STULZ Explorer chiller is available in a Free Cooling version with integrated Free Cooling coils for smaller models and pre-assembly to the dry cooler for larger models.

Condensing battery with V-geometry The condensing module with cross V-geometry allows greater unit modu-larity, with emphasis on air distribution and maximum component accessibility. The condenser coils use Microchannel technology, which allows high efficiency, very reduced thickness and reduced quantities of refrigerant.

EEV electronic expansion valve The gas temperature and evaporation pressure are optimized with high precision, thanks to the use of the elec-tronic expansion valve. When correctly calibrated, this function not only increases chiller efficiency, but also its proper use, thus increasing its reliability.

Energy rating The new STULZ Explorer range is in the high energy class. Depending on the models and version, the energy class can be A or B, with EER that can easily exceed the value of 3 under nominal Eurovent conditions, resulting a good compromise between Capex and Opex.

Reliability The units are designed according to strength and flexibility concepts, ensuring the integrity of the machines during normal transport by both truck and container. The components and the assembly logic are designed to ensure maximum reliability and accessibility for maintenance. The double circuit with tandem or three compressors per circuit ensures optimum operation at different loads and a long service life, with particular attention to industrial applications that require intensive use (24/365 operation).

Super Silent (SL)In the Silent version (EN 14511), the completely separate compressor chamber enables the precise reduction of axial fan speed and can reduce the sound pressure level.

Quick connectionsAll hydraulic connections are equipped with quick connections for greater ease of installation and maintenance as required.

Outdoor installation The STULZ Explorer range is designed to be used in all types of outdoor instal-lations. The electrical panel with IP54 protection guarantees proper safety measures for the electronic and electrical components. The various options allow an extension of the operating limits at both low and high temperatures.

Electronic Control WEBThe STULZ Explorer range is equipped with a STULZ electronic control board, which allows all components to interoperate correctly. Upon request, it is also possible to install a touchscreen display and an optional WEB gate for remote connection.

Hydronic Group (HK)An integrated hydronic unit (for smaller sizes) or beside the machine (for larger sizes) is available as an option. The hydronic unit includes a pressurized tank, expansion tank and pump, and can also be supplied with a dual pump.

Protective treatment on the coilsFor the condenser, protective treatments with epoxy or cataphoresis coatings are available. These treatments are recom-mended when the chiller is located in an environment with aggressive atmospheric agents. In the Free Cooling version, a cataphoresis treatment on the condenser of the refrigerant circuit is standard.

Protective gridsFor all versions, protective grids in the same material and color of the chiller housing are available. The size and strength of the meshes are designed to allow proper air flow in the condensers while preventing access to the components.

Control Options

Anti-vibration mountsSupports specifically designed to bear the chiller's weight and eliminate transmission of the vibrations to the underlying structure during operation.

Flow switchComponent that verifies the circulation of the fluid in the circuit. Installed on the return pipe to the chiller. The flow switch is electrically connected to the chiller and reports the absence of fluid circulation, preventing damage to the hydraulic components.

Soft startDevice for reducing mechanical stress during compressor start-up. The device partialises the starting current of the compressors by reducing the stress on the power supply line and preserving the compressors' components.

STULZ Explorer chillers were developed to cover an entire range of applications (from process industry to data centers). STULZ Explorer units are designed for a high energy class (Class A) or to work in extreme environmental conditions. They also come in very precise configurations with temperature controls dedicated to the application.

In almost all applications, the thermal load and ambient temper-ature conditions are highly variable. STULZ Explorer units closely match all environmental and load conditions, achieving a high seasonal efficiency (ESEER) – even higher than 5. High ESEER values lead to significant energy savings.

STULZ Explorer units (WPA060 to WPA110) can be selected with onboard Free Cooling, while versions with a higher cooling capacity are designed for connection to a dry cooler unit. Chillers with integrated Free Cooling are provided with Free Cooling coils for the water circuit, a three-way valve and a hydronic group with 1 pump. As standard, the Free Cooling configuration also includes the cataphoresis treatment of Microchannel condensing coils in order to avoid galvanic corrosion due to the proximity of other water exchangers. The cost effectiveness of a system with integrated Free Cooling and its ROI (return on investment) depend on the working condi-tions, the cooling unit efficiency and the climatic conditions on the installation site.

All these factors are integrated into STULZ selection software, which is able to simulate chiller operating conditions in more than 300 cities in the world, calculating the annual saving of money and energy (kWh) very accurately. For instance, it is possible to enter the altitude value of the installation and to factor in the density of air in the chiller performance calculation. The kWh cost can also be varied. During the simulation, the software also takes the variation of fans speed in Mix-Mode (combination between Free Cooling and compressor cooling) into consideration.

In temperate climates north and south of the equatorial zone, the energy-saving advantages of Indirect Free Cooling can be fully exploited. Electricity consumption for data center air condi-tioning will drop by up to 60%.

Control and Monitoring – Electronic Control STULZ C2020The “mind” of the STULZ Explorer Screw chiller is the Stulz C2020 electronic control, developed by Stulz to achieve the best performance from every component. In the Stulz Explorer range with screw compressors have been implemented new functions in order to obtain the best management of the new components. Memory and calculation speed are increased, allowing a better and faster control of all the components and preserving the durability of the units. The numerous functions and parameters are summarized in a few simple steps and screens, which allow the user to easily keep under control the chiller correct operation. A 7” liquid crystal display with touch screen acts as an interface between the user and the chiller. The display reports all the information on: operation status, working time, alarm history and alarm signals. Furthermore it allows to start, stop and modify the chiller operation.

C 2020 Electronic Controller is equipped with the following pre-loaded functions :

• Sequencing = to connect through a specific line more chillers and manage the components as a unique chiller

• Emergency Cooling = to activate the chillers in the same line, in case the active chiller cannot make up for the overload of the user.

• Redundancy = activates alternatively the chillers and guarantees the service continuity in case of fault of a chiller.

• ModBus RTU = to manage remotely the chiller through standard interfaces

• Stulz Protocol = to connect the chiller to the Stulz supervision components

• Unloading = guarantees the chiller partialised operation even at high temperatures

• Antifreeze

C 2020 Electronic Controller manages :

• Compressors = start, switching off and slide valve partialisation, within the limits provided by the supplier

• Fans = depending on the power requested and on the active function (chiller, Free Cooling) sets the fans speed, to guarantee the maximum yield with lesser noise and electric consumption

• Electronic Thermostatic Valves = partialises the refrigerant evaporation to obtain the requested power with the lesser electrical consumption

• Fluid side pumps (where expected) = the electronic control manages the redundancy in case of installation of 2 pumps, in order to maintain the working time of the pumps as similar as possible.

• Free Cooling circuit = partialising the 3-ways valve, it takes advantage of the entire cooling capacity recoverable from the ambient air.
