Professor Lourens van Staden has extensive experience in higher education and has recently concluded a successful thirty-month term as Administrator of Walter Sisulu University, appointed by Minister BE Nzimande, MP.

He occupies the substantive position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at the Tshwane University of Technology. He holds

a B.Ed: General) UP; B.Ed (Curriculum Research): UP (Dissertation: A competency-based modular approach for technical training (Technika Mechanical); M.Ed (Curriculum Science) cum laude: RAU (Dissertation: Modular competency-based curriculum for technology education (Technika Mechanical) and D.Ed (Curriculum Science): RAU (Thesis: A functional model for curriculum development at technikons (Empirical Research: Technika Mechanical, Electrical and Civil programmes reviewed).

Lourens has occupied numerous leadership positions in higher education as a director, a dean, a deputy vice-chancellor - both academic and teaching, learning and technology and has also been an acting vice-chancellor.

He has extensive experience in developing policy for both masters and doctoral degrees; curriculum development training modules; was chief examiner of Subject Didactics: mechanical, civil and electrical fields of specialisation for the national Department of Education and was Chair of the National Committee for Teacher Education (CTM Committee) amongst many other roles.

Lourens has also played a leading role as an initiator and co-developer of qualifications for universities of technology and has undertaken extensive research, presenting papers nationally and internationally. He was a recipient of the prestigious Ernest Oppenheimer Research Award.

As a key player in technological innovation he has established many innovative hubs and units to the value of millions of rands.

During his tenure as Administrator of Walter Sisulu University, Lourens has proved that he is an exceptional leader.

PROFESSOR LOURENS VAN STADEN

Judge Nambitha Dambuza was appointed on 1 November 2013 as Acting Judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa until 31 March 2014. From 1 April 2014 she will resume her function as a Judge at High Court and Competition Appeal Court.

Nambitha was born in Butterworth in 1964, completed her primary

school education at Veldtman’s Junior Secondary School in Butterworth and matriculated from St John’s College, Mthatha.

She obtained her B Proc and LLB degrees from the

University of Natal and served her articles of clerkship with Attorneys Ndzimande and Mbuli in Durban. In May 1990 she was admitted as an attorney.

In 1992 she attained a Masters in Law degree (LLM) from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA and from 1993 to 2003 she practiced as an attorney in Butterworth. She was elevated to the bench on 1 December 2005 and in 2009 was appointed as a Judge of Competition Appeal Court.

Nambitha has served as member of Council of the Law Society of the Cape of Good Hope, as Secretary of the Black Lawyers Association (Eastern Cape), as Council member of the New Horizon School Council (Butterworth) until 2000 and as a Trustee of the St George’s Preparatory School Trust (Port Elizabeth) until 2008. She currently a Member of Council and Trustee of the Diocesan School for Girls in Grahamstown, a Trustee of the Heatherbank School, Port Elizabeth and a Council Member of the South African Judicial Education Council.

Chantyl Mulder is the Senior Executive: P r o f e s s i o n a l D e v e l o p m e n t , Transformation and Growth within the professional body the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) and serves on the Executive Management Team.

She graduated from the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU)

thereafter completing her BCom Hons, one of the first five women from RAU to obtain this qualification. She qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1981.

She joined PAAB in 1985 as Examinations Office and was promoted during this time to Education and Training Director.

Chantyl moved to the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) in 1990 and has been there ever since. She focuses upon education and training requirements for the accounting profession

and pearheaded the newly-formed Transformation Unit. She established the Thuthuka Bursary Fund and set up agreements with eight major universities to assist with the delivery of African and Coloured CA’s. Chantyl was responsible for the gazetting process of the CA Profession Charter is also responsible for coordinating cooperation to create a Southern African Institute of Chartered Accountants.

Nandipa is General Manager, HR Corporate Centre (Transnet SOC Ltd) and has been in the Human Resource profession for the past 21 years. In her current role as an HR business partner, she provides an effective and efficient HR generalist support to senior executive management.

In 2005/2006 she was appointed as an HR Specialist Programme

Management Office (PMO) which was established to support the Transnet Turnaround strategy. The Programme Office was responsible for monitoring,

evaluating, and reporting on operational efficiencies in the Operating divisions of Transnet.

Nandipa is a highly disciplined, hands-on practitioner with strong business leadership skills and operates at executive management level. She has been in a senior position for the past 12 years.

She holds a Bachelor of Social Science Honours degree from the University of Natal; participated in the Executive Development Programme, Graduate Institute of Business Science and holds various diplomas and certificates in her field. She was a board member of Worldsview Consulting (Worldsview Holdings) from 2009 to 2011.

Her career experience includes positions at Woolworths, Independent Mediation Services of SA (IMSSA) and Standard Bank of South Africa.

Dr Luyanda Mpahlwa is the Director and Design Principle at the Cape Town architectural firm DesignSpace Africa which he founded in 1999.

An internationally-recognised, award-winning architect, who has worked in South Africa and abroad, Dr Mpahlwa was born in Mthatha in 1958, matriculating from St John’s College in

Mthatha in 1976.

He went on to study at the University of Natal and Natal Technikon, eventually graduating, while in exile, from the Technical University of Berlin in 1997 with a master’s degree in engineering.

Before establishing DesignSpaceAfrica, he was Director and Partner at MMA Architects for 12 years.

Some accolades which he has received include the Award of Excellence for the South African Embassy Building in Berlin, a Curry Stone Design Award from the University of Kentucky in the United States of America for Cape Town’s innovative 10x10 low-cost housing project.

In 2010, Dr Mpahlwa was appointed by the Minister of Arts and Culture to serve in the Council of the Robben Island Museum. He also served as part of the Technical Team of advisors for the 10 stadiums built for the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Dr Mpahlwa was also part of the successful Cape Town Bid for World Design Capital 2014.

He is also a recipient of an honorary science & technology doctorate from the Walter Sisulu University.

DR LUYANDA MPAHLWA

Temba is a CA (SA) and has numerous academic achievements including a second professional designation of a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). He is presently the Chief Executive Officer of ANF Incorporated.

His career experience includes a number of universities such as Fort Hare, University of Limpopo, NMMU, WSU and UCT. During his

tenure at Nkonki & Associates he was the partner in charge of the following clients: Sanparks, Primeserv Group, SAFCOL, and was a team member of the JSE Securities Exchange. He also formed his own company, Zakuza & Beseti Inc.

Temba has held numerous board appointments: IRBA, SALGA, HAEL, PAAB, ABASA and is a trustee of

the Thuthuka Education Fund of SAICA as well as a member of the Continuing Professional Development Committee of SAICA. With a strong interest in developing potential CA (SA)s, Temba took the initiative to identify capable students to become chartered accountants and won the ABASA President’s award for this role.

His community service activities include being a council member of the Nelson Mandela National Museum, Audit Committee chairperson for NMNM and chairperson of the Eastern Cape Municipal Support Services Audit Committee.

Temba also spearheaded the writing of the Nkuhlu Biography project intended to dispel the myth of accounting as a difficult career reserved for the privileged. He served two Finance Ministers of the Republic as a member of IRBA and served the Minister of Higher Education & Training as a member of the Assessor’s team deployed to the University of Zululand. Temba also performed a desktop review of Walter Sisulu University on behalf of SAICA as a basis for the SAICA intervention now underway.

Les Holbrook is the Executive Director of the Border Kei Chamber of Business, a position he has held since 1999. Prior to this he was Executive Director of the Transkei Chamber of Industries, appointed in 1992.

From 1982 to 1992 he was Assistant General Manager at Beier Industries (Transkei) Pty Ltd and from 1979 to 1981 was a

Department Superintendent at Schrader Tyre Valve Co (Pty) Ltd.

Les holds a Certificate in Management Practice from Rhodes University, a Certificate in Financial Management (TFM), an NTC III in Mechanical Engineering and is an A-Class Artisan (Automotive Engineering).

Les has valuable experience in representing business and industrial interests in the region and is a thought leader on all matters related to economic development. He has been a trustee of the Chamber Employee Benefits since 2003, is a trustee of the Siyakhana Health Trust and a board member of the Eastern Cape Socio-economic Consultative Council (ECSECC) which advises the Premier of the Province of the Eastern Cape.

From 1988 to 1999 Les was the vice-chairman of the former Eastern Cape Technikon Council and has valuable governance experience in the higher education sector.

LES HOLBROOK

Simphiwe Kondlo is the Chief Executive of the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) and has held this position for the past twelve years. The ELIDZ was created to stimulate economic growth and Foreign Direct Investment into the Eastern Cape Province and is a front-runner industrial development operation. Immediately prior to his current appointment,

he was the Chief Executive of Amatola Water.

Born in the Eastern Cape, Simphiwe matriculated from St John’s College, Mthatha and went on to obtain a

BSc in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Natal and a Masters in Engineering Management from the University of Pretoria. Simphiwe has wide experience in publications and presentations, drafting technical papers, policy position papers, proposal presentations to funding agencies and potential customers and publishing research documents and articles. He is a member of the South African Institute of Agricultural Engineers and the Water Institute of South Africa.

His current leadership roles include the chairmanship of the TCTA Board and he has been first vice-president of the Border-Kei Chamber of Business since 2010. He has previously been chairman of the Aspire Economic Development Agency and a board member of the Eastern Cape Development Corporation, the Mvula Trust, Buffalo City FET College, Border Cricket Board, EC Appropriate Technology Unit and the SA Association of Water Utilities.

Lancelot Ndumiso Capa is an accomplished trade unionist and political activist with an keen interest in agriculture and development.

Born in born in 1949 in Flagstaff in the Eastern Cape, Mr Capa is a product of the highly acclaimed Healdtown High School in Fort Beaufort where he completed his senior Form V certificate in 1969.

This was followed by significant contributions to struggle for a democratic South Africa.

Subsequently, he was awarded a scholarship by the African National Congress to study agriculture in Australia. He went on to successfully complete

an undergraduate and honours degree in applied agricultural science from the University of Western Sydney in New South Wales in Australia.

Career milestones include agricultural officer at the Transkei Agricultural Development Corporation, deputy director at the Department of Agriculture’s Mount Currie Region and senior manager at the Ntinga OR Tambo Development Agency, a development agency in the OR Tambo District of the Eastern Cape.

Mr Capa has an extensive track record in leadership with the African National Congress, both at provincial and local level.

He was also elected as the district secretary of the South African Communist Party’s Wild Coast District and elected to the party’s provincial executive committee.

Notably, he was the chairperson of the University of the Transkei’s council until its dissolution and the Eastern Cape Region of the National Military Veterans Association.

LANCELOT NDUMISO CAPA

Gloria is a Founding Member and Executive Director of WIPHOLD and Chief Executive Officer of Wipcapital. Her professional experience includes positions at the USA’s Exxon Corporation, Munich Reinsurance Company of SA, the Premier Group and Standard Corporate and Merchant Bank. She was the Executive Director – Finance, Transnet Limited and

was a member of the Transnet Board and its major subsidiaries.

She serves on several Boards including Old Mutual, Nedbank, Hans Merensky and Sasol Mining. She is the Chairman of the Board of the Independent Ports Regulator and a trustee of the Women Investment Portfolio Holdings Limited Share Trust and the Women Investment Portfolio Holdings Investment Trust. She is an honorary member of the Actuarial Society of South Africa and is a member of the SAICA Advisory Council.

GLORIA TOMATOE SEROBE

Her previous non-executive Directorships include Chairman of the Life Office’s Association (LOA), Chairman of the Metropolitan Group, Export Credit Insurance Corporation, Airports Company South Africa, Express Kenya Limited, M-Cell, MTN, the Financial Markets Advisory Board and the JSE. She was Chairman of the Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund (Pensioner only Fund) and the Transnet Pension Fund Investment Committee and was also a Trustee of the South African Airways Share Trust, Transnet Retirement Fund (DC Fund) and Transnet Pension Fund (DB Fund).

Gloria holds many accolades including Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World, AWCA “Woman of Substance”, BWA : Corporate Business Woman of the Year, BusinessMap Foundation Business Report BEE Leader, Top Women in Business & Government “Businesswoman of the Year”; ABSIP “Pioneer of Empowerment” andImpumelelo Top 300 Award for “Contribution to Transformation, Job Creation, the Economy and as a BEE Role Model”.

Gloria obtained a BCom degree from the University of Transkei and holds an MBA degree from Rutgers University, New Jersey, USA.

Vuyo is a National Planning Commissioner and Chair of the Capable/Development State and Spatial Working Group tasked with delivering South Africa’s first National Development Plan, a 5-year part-time (2010-2015) appointment by the State President.

She is also chairperson of the Siyaya TV Board of Directors, a 100% Black-owned media

company and a former chairperson of the South African Post Office Board.

Among her many accolades are: An International award by Europe Business Assembly 2012 for SAPO “Best Enterprise” for Dynamic Growth, and Chairperson the “Manager of the Year”. Other awards include: National Business Award (2008); Best African Postal Operator; 2009 Annual report - winner in the category ‘State owned and non-listed entities’ in the JSE Awards for Company Reporting (November 2009); Aug 2009 - Oracle Award for Financial Systems,

MS VUYOKAZI (VUYO) FELICITY MAHLATI

Nov 2009, the only African company to be recognized in the ‘Future Strategies 2009 Global Awards for Excellence in Business Process Management and Workflow’, walking away with a Silver medal; as well as The Most Progressive Company” - Black Management Forum, October 2009.

Previous career experience includes the position of Senior Research at the University of Pretoria (School of Agriculture and Rural Development); Programme Leader for a National Program for the Creation of Small Enterprise and Jobs in the Second Economy; Independent Advisory Services to public and private sector entities; The United Nations Population Fund – Engendering Constitution-making in Tunisia post Arab Spring (August 2012); South Africa Technical Advisor for 2009 United Nations CSW (Commission on the Status of Women); Convener India Brazil South Africa (IBSA) Women’s Forum Secretariat and WK Kellogg Foundation, Michigan, USA Program Director in seven countries of the Southern African Region responsible for Integrated Rural Development. She has also worked with the Development Bank of Southern Africa the Disabled People of South Africa.

Vuyo is currently president of the International Women’s Forum South Africa and a member of the International Women’s Forum.

Prof Khaya Mfenyana was born in the rural village of Macibini, Lady Frere in the Eastern Cape. He did a teacher’s diploma, followed by a BSc degree at Fort Hare followed by his MBChB at the University of Natal and a Master’s Degree in Family Medicine at Medunsa. He later did a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration at Michigan State University in USA.

Prof Mfenyana worked as a medical practitioner in the former Transkei at Mthatha, Mount Frere and Cala and then at Medunsa and Ga-Rankuwa Hospital as a senior lecturer and Principal Medical Office. He was appointed as the first Professor and Head of Department of Family Medicine at the then University of Transkei (now Walter Sisulu University) and Mthatha Hospital Complex from 1989 – 2005.

Khaya has championed community-based education at WSU and this has made the institution the first medical school in South Africa to introduce a

He also holds a number of other qualifications in the field of management and engineering, amongst others.

Before his appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Affairs & Research at WSU, Sandile served as the overall coordinator for the WSU Turnaround

curriculum that embraces problem-based learning and community-based education as the main learning strategies from first to final year.

After having been appointed as the first Substantive Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at WSU in January 2008, he was further appointed as Interim Vice-Chancellor & Principal from February 2014.

He is currently a Council Member of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), a member of the Professional Conduct Review Committee and a member of the Sub-Committee for Undergraduate Education and Training, a committee he has been serving since 1997. In 2011,Khaya served as a member of the Ministerial Task Team that was appointed to advise on the processes of establishing District Clinical Specialist teams as part of re-engineering of primary health care system in South Africa.

Prof Mfenyana has published in peer reviewed journals in South Africa and abroad. He has also contributed a chapter in the first, second and third editions of the Handbook of Family Medicine in South Africa. Prof Mfenyana’s current research interest is in Community-Based Education and Service-Learning.

Framework Projects. Previously, he was the executive dean of the faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology (FSET) at WSU.

He has also has several years of experience in lecturing in Higher Institutions of learning including the universities of Transkei, Cape Town, Zululand, South Africa, Limpopo Medunsa Campus and Walter Sisulu.

He has held several positions of responsibility within this space, including head of department for Science and Mathematics at Marelane High School in Bizana, Vice Dean of Science, University of Transkei (UNITRA), Deputy Dean of Science, University of Limpopo, Medunsa Campus, HOD of Chemistry Department at the Universities of Transkei, Zululand and Limpopo Medunsa campus and Director of the School of Physical and Mineral Sciences, University of Limpopo.

Dr Prince Jaca holds a PhD in Mathematics, MEd, MSc, Hons BSc, a BSc(Ed), a Business and Leadership Training Certificate and a Curriculum D e v e l o p m e n t Certificate.

He is presently the acting director of the School of Mathematics in the WSU Faculty of Education.

With over 20 years’ experience in higher education, Prince has held junior lecturer, lecturer and senior lecturer positions, is a postgraduate supervisor and an external examiner.

Dr Kofi Owushu Acheampong is the Director of Walter Sisulu University’s School of Tourism and Hospitality.

Born in 1956 in Ghana, Dr Acheampong holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of South Africa (2012).

Other academic achievements include a Master of Science in Tourism from the

United Kingdom’s Buckinghamshire Chilterns, a Master of Arts in Geography from the University of Natal and a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Social Science in Geography & Sociology from University of Science & Technology in Kumasi, Ghana.

Other roles he has filled include that of Transformation Officer, Disciplinary Case presiding officer and HEQSF facilitator. His special interest areas include data and trend analysis, data technologies, higher education planning and funding, Quality Assurance, transformation and customer service.

He is conversant with SAQA(NQF), CHE(HEQF) and DHET(PQM) and well as the various legislative frameworks for higher education. He has also had success in raising external funds for his work at WSU including R1,9 million from Ford Foundation and he was instrumental in securing R1,6 million from the Department of Science and Technology.

Prince has received various awards which include a European World University Service Scholarship to study in the UK and a Spencer Foundation Scholarship to study in SA and the US.

the Provincial Tourism Forum 2012, the Planning Committee for the visit of National Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Tourism to the Eastern Cape Province in 2012, and a South African academic delegation who visited the Czech Republic in order to strengthen relations with the Mendel University.

He also represented the University on two occasions as a visiting tourism lecturer at Mendel University in the Czech Republic.

He was instrumental in bringing the International Conference on Applied Business Research (ICABR) 2013 to South Africa and holding a successful conference.

Dr Acheampong has been a member of Walter Sisulu University’s senate, faculty board and faculty committees since 2008.

He is also an external examiner for the Cape Peninsula University of Technology’s Master’s degree in tourism and hospitality management, a position he has held since 2010.

Lusindiso Matotie is an Advocate of the Supreme Court of South Africa in private practice as well as a member of the Transkei Bar Council of Advocates.

Born in 1978, Advocate matriculated from the Port Shepstone High School and went on to graduate with a LLB from the University of Transkei in 2005.

In 2008, he passed his attorney board exams after two years of PLT training with VV Msindo & Associates in East London and with the Durban and Transkei Bar.

Two years later, he passed his bar exams with the Transkei Bar and began practising as an advocate.

Advocate Matotie was the Director of the Eastern Cape Consumer Council from 1999 to 2000. In the late 1980s, he was manager and shareholder of the supermarket, Cossu Cash and Carry.

As a student, he worked as a student assistant in the University of Transkei’s public relations office.

He has held leadership roles as a judicial secretary and secretary general of the Student Representative Council.

He also represented the University of Transkei and South Africa at the All Africa Moot Court Competition in Eqypt and Tanzania.

In 2006, Matotie was named national champion of a client counselling competition.

During 2006 to 2010, Matotie was elected as general secretary of Walter Sisulu University’s Convocation.

ADVOCATE LUSINDISO MATOTIE

Prof Bandile Nakani is a Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at Walter Sisulu University.

Born in Alice in the Eastern Cape, he matriculated from St John’s College, Mthatha, holds an MSc from the University of Fort Hare and obtained his PhD from the University of the Witwatersrand.

He commenced his career as a Quality Control Officer at Butakem Pty (LTD) before moving into academia at the University of Fort Hare as a lecturer and then in 1987 to the former University of Transkei. He was appointed Dean of Science in 2000 and became a full professor in 2004.

His academic career has seen him participate in many

conferences, conventions, symposia and workshops nationally and Professor Nakani has supervised and capacitated numerous post-graduate students.

In 1993 he was a visiting professor to the University of Cape Town and has been on the organizing committees of national and provincial symposia. He is a National Research Fund (NRF) evaluator of applications for research funding and was an external examiner for the MSc at the University of the North, Qwaqwa, University of South Africa, University of Cape Town and a PhD at the University of Fort Hare from 2000 to 2009.

Professor Nakani served as a senate representative on the council of the former University of Transkei and of Walter Sisulu University from 2002 to 2009.

He is a member of the South African Chemical Institute, an associate member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemists, serves as chairman of the National Tertiary Education Union at the Nelson Mandela Drive Site of Walter Sisulu University and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the WSU Group Insurance Scheme.

Siyabulela is employed at Walter Sisulu University as an ICT Telecommunications A d m i n i s t r a t i v e Assistant. He holds a BCom degree from Walter Sisulu University.

He has been with Walter Sisulu University since 2007 and currently does data capturing, setting of pin codes, managing telephone

usage, issuing statements to users and filing. He was previously an administrative assistant in the Financial Aid Bureau of WSU and worked with National Student Financial Aid claims.

In 2007 Siyabulela joined WSU as an administrative assistant in the Human Resources Department. Prior to this he was a teacher at Christ the King International School in 2006 and also has experience in the Department of Education as a registry clerk.
