Dear Member,

Arguably, there are few figures in American music history who have left a bigger imprint on

our culture – and on future generations of artists – than the flamboyant composer, conductor,

pianist, educator, and visionary Leonard Bernstein, whose 100th birthday will be celebrated

across the globe this month. Bernstein, whose many works include West Side Story, On the Town,

and Candide, will also be a focus on WFMT where you can hear his music all month long, and

notably throughout the day on Bernstein’s actual birthday: Saturday, August 25.

Southeast Chicago used to be one of the largest steel-producing regions in the world. Beginning in the late 19th century, the steel mills along Lake Michigan employed hundreds of thousands of people: immigrants from every region of the world; workers of all ethnicities; people searching for a better life. But that all began to change in the 1980s. One by one, the mills closed, leaving a region devastated by a crumbling economy and a toxic environment left behind by heavy industry. A forgotten region, even the exit ramp here is numbered Zero. Exit Zero recaptures the stories of a region traumatized by de-industrialization, and looks toward a future of economic opportu-nity and environmental justice for Southeast Chicago residents.

Music, Literature, Legend at Grant ParkWilliam Shakespeare’s plays and poems have influenced many other art forms: painting, film, and music among them. Carlos Kalmar and the Grant Park Orchestra will offer some samples of Shakespearean music for their first August concert, in Pritzker Pavilion at Millennium Park. Besides Tchaikovsky’s famous Romeo and Juliet, we’ll hear one of Richard Strauss’ very first tone poems, Macbeth, and Dvorak’s Othello Overture, part of a trilogy of better-known overtures that also include In Nature’s Realm and Carnival. Kalmar rounds out the program with a famous Wagner extract, the Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan and Isolde, whose libretto the composer based on medieval Celtic legends. Dave Schwan hosts WFMT’s live broadcast.

Leonard Bernstein CentenaryLeonard Bernstein (1918-1990) has been variously described as an American musical icon and as an apostle for music. In his multi-sided roles as composer, conductor, pianist, teacher, and broadcaster, Bernstein brought his lively talents and unabashed enthusiasm to enhance the worlds of classical music, Broadway, and jazz. Longtime music director of the New York Philharmonic, he guest-conducted orchestras all over the world, including the Chicago Symphony. WFMT joins the rest of the musical world this month in honoring this leading light of the performing arts in the 20th century. Just about every day of the month will feature selections from Bernstein’s many recordings. (One of the most famous is slated for Sunday afternoon, August 19: his 1989 performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in Berlin, to celebrate the coming-down of the Berlin Wall.) On Monday evening, August 20, we’ll replay a Bernstein tribute from our late critic-at-large, Andrew Patner. On that same date, Bill McGlaughlin will begin a weeklong Bernstein series. Bill visited the sixth annual Tucson Desert Song Festival for its celebration of Leonard Bernstein at 100. Lectures, workshops, and master classes surrounded performances of three stage works – Candide, Trouble in Tahiti, and Mass – plus the Kaddish Symphony with new narration by Jamie Bernstein, all of which Bill will sample for his shows. Then on the actual birthday, WFMT will play Bernstein recordings all day, including his Candide CD with Jerry Hadley in the title role. It’s all kind of a way of saying: happy birthday, Lenny. You are remembered and revered.

In the Spotlight

New Music from Santa FeA resident of Boulder, CO, American composer Phil Taylor has worked on commissions from the Minnesota Orchestra, the Pacifica Quartet, eighth blackbird, the Spektral Quartet, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. He’s a graduate of the University of Chicago, where he studied composition with Shulamit Ran and Augusta Read Thomas. The FLUX Quartet premiered his String Quartet No. 2, subtitled of embers and aspen leaves, last summer at the St Francis Auditorium in Santa Fe. The composer has commented that within the work’s flickering, rustling sounds lies an image, a memory, and that the music is a connecting of impressions that, like memory and reality, can be understood only through motion. Another new piece on this month’s Santa Fe broadcasts, which are hosted by Kerry Frumkin, is Prisms by festival artistic director Marc Neikrug, a piano suite he wrote in 2016 for Kirill Gerstein.

Grant Park: Welcoming George LiOne of the most acclaimed young pianists of our time is George Li, born in Boston in 1995 to Chinese-American parents. He’s the winner of the 2010 Young Concert Artists prize and the 2012 Gilmore Young Artist Award, tied for second place at the International Tchaikovsky Competition, and won a 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant. He’s been a soloist with orchestras in the US and Europe, and comes to this summer’s Grant Park Music Festival to play Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 under the direction of Carlos Kalmar. Kalmar starts the concert with an American rarity, the Symphony in D Major, A Festival Piece in One Movement, by John Vincent (1902-1977).

From Carnegie HallAfter starting off with Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 3, this month’s sequence of broadcasts from Carnegie Hall continues with a recital by pianist Yuja Wang, which is highlighted by an equally monumental work, Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata. Also from New York’s venerable venue will be a sonata-and-fantasy recital by frequent collaborators Joshua Bell, violin, and Jeremy Denk, piano: works by Mozart, Richard Strauss, Janacek, and Schubert. The Vienna Philharmonic under Gustav Dudamel visited Carnegie this past season with an all-Brahms program, and the Bavarian State Orchestra also brought some Brahms, his Double Concerto with soloists Julia Fischer, violin, and Daniel Müller-Schott, cello. Conducting the orchestra is Kirill Petrenko, chief conductor-designate of the Berlin Philharmonic.

A Monteverdi Rarity from the Royal Opera HouseClaudio Monteverdi’s opera Il ritorno d’Ulisse in Patria – Ulysses’ Return to His Homeland – was premiered in 1640 during Carnival season in Venice, in the days when opera was new. It’s one of three of the composer’s operas that have actually survived complete, the others being L’Orfeo and The Coronation of Poppea. Set – like Berlioz’s Trojans – during the aftermath of the great legendary Grecian-Trojan War, it recounts not Ulysses’ fabulous adventures sailing through the Greek Isles, but rather the complicated situation he finds when he arrives home, where his wife Penelope is besieged by importunate suitors and his son Telemachus does not at first recognize him. London’s Royal Opera House recently mounted Il ritorno in an English-language production recorded by the BBC. Baritone Roderick Williams sings the title role.

The Orquesta Sinfónica Simón BolívarThis Venezuelan organization, named for South America’s revolutionary hero, was founded as a youth orchestra in 1978 by José Antonio Abreu. The official El Sistema national ensemble is now named the Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra, while the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar has gone on to win an international reputation as an adult orchestra. Gustavo Dudamel, music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, was named OSSB’s music director in 1999. In the Spotlight

Grant Park Grand Finale: Carmina BuranaCarl Orff (1895-1982) subtitled his most famous composition Scenic Cantata, and intended it as a collaboration among singers, dancers, and actors. However, it’s as a piece of music for vocal soloists, chorus, and orchestra that has gained its place as one of the most popular and most often-performed choral pieces from the 20th century. Completed in 1936, it sets secular verses from the Middle Ages, allegedly found among the manuscripts of a monastery, first published in the 19th century under the title Carmina Burana. Among the topics of this poetry are springtime, the joys of love, revelry in taverns, and above all, the fickleness of fortune. The first and last sections of the work are called Fortuna Imperatrix Mundi, or Fortune the Empress of the World. Carlos Kalmar leads the Grant Park Chorus and Orchestra, along with the youthful singers of Anima and three soloists, in this highly enjoyable music to conclude the 2018 Grant Park Music Festival.
