Welcome to SeptemberAs everyone is settling in to school, season changes and new routines, WTVP is shaking things up with more incredible programming. PBS’ spotlight on America’s diverse cultures and ancestries begins this month, with the premiere of Genealogy Roadshow and Latino Americans, which will air in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. Arts programming begins on a high note with the premiere episodes of Great Performances “The Hollow Crown” and the first film from the PBS Independent Film Showcase, “Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey” from Independent Lens. “Billie Jean King” from American Masters airs in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of tennis’ famous “battle of the sexes,” and the anticipated Mas-terpiece Mystery! production “Foyle’s War, Series VII” also premieres. Science and nature continue to shine with a re-broadcast of Ken Burns’ celebrated series The National Parks and a breathtaking miniseries, “Earthflight,” from Nature. There’s a lot to love on public television.

What If… Old Loves Had New Chances?Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid lead a stellar cast in the BAFTA Award-winning drama, Last Tango in Halifax. An instant hit on BBC One back in late 2012, this uplifting comedy/drama about romance and second chances joins the PBS Sunday night line-up beginning September 8 at 7:00 p.m.—lead-ing into the Masterpiece Mystery! court room drama, “Silk.” Full of zesty humor, authentic characters and glorious dialogue, this six-part series is about timeless love in a very modern setting.

Childhood sweethearts Alan and Celia, both widowed and in their 70s, fall for each other all over again when they are reunited over the internet after nearly 60 years. As their lives collide for a second time, the couple laments what might have been as they take audiences on a life-affirming journey together. While their relationship is a celebratory tale of the power of love at any age, it is also a story about family and the complications the relationship causes, especially for their grown daughters.

• Daniel Tiger’s Neighbor-hood is changing Labor Day to “Neighbor Day” with a new half–hour special! Tune in Sept. 2 as Daniel learns how good it feels to be neighborly – and that one kind act can lead to many more.

• Sesame Street kicks off its 44th season on Sept. 16 with new original songs and street stories; new “Elmo the Musi-cal” segments; new animations; new hilarious spoofs and celebrity appearances; and a funny new recurring segment, “Cookie’s Crumby Pictures.” Viewers will also get to meet the new Latino neighbor, “Armando,” played by actor Ismael Cruz Córdova.

• Peg + Cat, a delightful new math-based series, is coming to PBS KIDS! This new animated preschool series follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick, Cat, as they embark on adventures, solve problems and learn foundational math concepts and skills. Starts Oct. 7 with back-to-back episodes.

Happy Silver Anniversary to Linda Miller, WTVP’s Vice President of Programming. She first joined WTVP on August 1, 1988, as our Public Information Director and was promoted to head up our Programming Division in 1995. Since then she has been actively involved with bringing you some of the best television on television, and has become widely respected by her public broadcasting colleagues here at WTVP, across the state and across the nation. Best wishes and thank you Linda.

Bon voyage to our intrepid WTVP Travelers as they head out to England later this month. The first portion of the trip will include visits to several sites used as settings for Masterpiece productions such as Downton Abbey, Upstairs/Downstairs, Sherlock, Inspector Morse, Inspector Lewis and more, and ends up in the beautiful Lake District and Liverpool with the “Beatles Experience.” For the intrepid few adventurers, a fifty five mile walk along Hadrian’s Wall will follow.

Future trips include a cruise to Croatia and a trip to Nor-mandy and Paris to observe the 70th anniversary of D-Day.

Here’s a sneak peek/let-the-cat-out-of-the-bag item for those of you who are en-joying the Doc Martin series on Saturday evenings: new episodes never before seen in Peoria will premiere on October 12. Linda Miller (above) has acquired seasons three, four and five of the series, and she promises there will be comedy, drama, and many, many surprises for the good doctor and his charges in Portwenn.

Several fun WTVP events are planned for the next two months, and you’ll find information about them throughout this guide. Be sure to join us for an insider’s look at Downton Abbey with Jessica Fellowes on September 28, and then in October, watch for a very special display and presentation of wildlife photography by Peoria’s own Jim Miller. More informa-tion will be forthcoming about these and several other events, so stay tuned, and keep watching and supporting your local public television station, WTVP. Thank you.

Weekend News, Weekend ChangesPbS NewsHour Weekend—airing Saturdays and Sundays at 5 p.m. beginning Sept. 7—will feature a summary of the day’s national and international news, using renowned experts to provide in-depth analysis. Each weekend broadcast will contain original, in-depth field reporting on topics including education, health-care, the economy, energy, science and technology, religion, finance and the arts. Hari Sreenivasan anchors.

Due to this change, Motorweek will slide to 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays. Ad-venture Sports Outdoors, airing the last Saturday of each month, will also slide to 5:30 p.m. The Red Green Show will continue Wednesdays at 10 p.m., but will no longer encore in this weekend timeslot. Design Squad, previously seen Sundays at 5 p.m., is retiring from the WTVP schedule.

New Wars, New foyleFoyle—the articulate sleuth in the sharp fedora. Michael Kitchen and Honeysuckle Weeks return in three new episodes of the highly anticipated detective series, foyle’s War. Part of Masterpiece Mystery!, the new 90-minute films air Sundays, Sept. 15-29 at 8 p.m. Set in post-war 1946-47, Foyle (Kitchen) and his loyal friend Sam (Weeks) find themselves adjust-ing to a new era of secrets, intelligence, and security as their worlds shift into those of MI5.

Combining uncompromising historical accuracy with compelling, character-driven murder mysteries, this award-winning British series has won worldwide critical acclaim and undying viewer loyalty since its premiere on ITV in 2002 and PBS in 2003. Offering a unique glimpse into a significant time and place, “Foyle’s War” stars Michael Kitchen as DCS Christopher Foyle, a laconic World War I veteran who serves as detective chief superintendent in the English town of Hastings. As World War II rages, Foyle investigates crimes on the home front, exposing the ravages of war on his once quiet coastal com-munity. After the war, Foyle joins the intelligence community as the Cold War begins.

Latino AmericansA landmark three-part, six-hour documentary series narrated by actor Benjamin Bratt, Latino Americans premieres Tuesdays, Sept. 17-Oct. 1 from 7-9 p.m. each week. It is the first major documentary series for television to chronicle the rich and varied history and experiences of Latinos, who have for the past 500-plus years helped shape what is today the United States and have become, with more than 50 million people, the largest minority group in the U.S.

The series is led by Emmy Award-winning producer Adriana Bosch and documents the evolution of a new “Latino American” identity from the 1500s to the present day, featuring interviews with nearly 100 Latinos from the worlds of politics, business and pop culture — including Herman Badillo, Dolores Huerta, Gloria Estefan and Rita Moreno — as well as deeply personal portraits of lesser-known Latinos who lived through key chapters in American history.

Latino Americans tells the story of early settlement, conquest and im-migration; of tradition and reinven-tion; of anguish and celebration; and of the gradual construction of a new American identity from diverse sources that connects and empowers millions of people today. A companion book by Ray Suarez, Senior Correspondent for PBS NEWSHOUR, will be released to coincide with the series. The televi-sion broadcast will also be accompanied by a nationwide public engagement initiative, and bilingual digital engagement and public education campaigns at pbs.org/latino-americans.

The Hollow CrownIt’s the original “Game of Thrones”: the murderous backdrop of British history as told by the immortal Bard. In an epic new miniseries, The Hollow Crown, GREAT PERFORMANCES assembles four of Shakespeare’s most gripping history plays — Richard II, Henry IV, Parts I & II, and Henry V — into a single chronological narrative. The series premiered to rapturous reviews in the U.K., and was honored with awards both for its upscale produc-tion and stunning performances.

Premiering friday, Sept. �0 at 8 p.m., this lavish new series of filmed adaptations stars a cast of leading British and Hollywood talent and features some of the most pre-eminent Shakespearean actors of our time. The kings are played by Ben Whishaw, Jeremy Irons and Tom Hiddleston respectively, supported by a phenomenal cast including Rory Kinnear, Patrick Stewart, David Suchet and David Morrissey in Rich-ard II, Simon Russell Beale, Michelle Dockery, Julie Walters and Maxine Peake in Henry IV and John Hurt, Anton Lesser and Paterson Joseph in Henry V. The films continue Fridays at 8 p.m. through Oct. 11.

The films — chronicling a bloody tale of family, politics and power — tell the rise and fall of three kings and how their destiny shaped English history. Richard II is a vain, self-indulgent man who rules with little regard for his people’s welfare. He is ultimately overthrown by his cousin Bolingbroke, who ascends the throne as Henry IV. Henry IV’s reign is marred by his own guilt over Richard’s death, civil war, and the gnawing fear that his son Hal is a total wastrel unworthy of the throne. When Hal comes to the throne as Henry V, he is left to bury the ghosts of his father’s past while fighting both the French forces as well as his own inner demons.

Genealogy RoadshowPart detective story, part emotional journey, Genealogy Roadshow will combine history and science to un-cover the fascinating stories of diverse Americans. Each individual’s past will link to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of America. Genealogy Roadshow will air Mondays, Sept. ��-Oct. 14 from 8-9 p.m. after Antiques Roadshow.

Hosted by Los Angeles-area broad-caster Emmett Miller, Genealogy Roadshow’s premiere season will fea-ture participants from four American cities — Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco — who want to explore unverified genealogical claims, passed down through family history, that may (or may not) con-nect them to an event or a historical figure. Experts in genealogy, history and DNA—including nationally-known genealogical authors, lecturers and researchers Joshua Taylor and Kenyatta Berry—use heirlooms, letters, pictures, historical documents and other clues to hunt down details. They will also enlist the help of local historians to add color and context to the investigations, ensuring every ar-tifact and every name becomes a clue in solving the mystery. Genealogy Roadshow will unearth family and community secrets, reveal notable relatives and discover unexpected stories that connect the past to the present.

With a diverse mix of stories in each episode, Genealogy Roadshow ap-peals to Americans interested in learning about their family histories. It also shows that no matter one’s heritage and background, everyone has a place in history.

& WTVP has 26 new television stars! Look for a new season of Rain-bow Readers—WTVP’s video book report project—in between kids shows starting Labor Day weekend. WTVP invited public libraries throughout our viewing area to send their best and brightest to the studio to tell us what they’re reading and why. Tune in for a taste of our local talent…and to get some great ideas to add to your reading lists.

& WTVP’s award-winning series of interstitial arts programs, Art In The Works, is in production on a second season. Look for new episodes on local artists coming soon.

Local Spotlight

Congratulations to WTVP Board of Directors member Tom Spurgeon, former president and CEO of Lincoln Office in Peoria, who was recently elected Chairman of the Purdue University Board of Trustees. Spurgeon, who graduated from the Purdue University Industrial Management program in 1961, has also served on the advisory board for the Indiana University School of Business and as an instructor at both Indiana Univer-sity and Bradley University. WTVP is proud to have such an accomplished entrepreneur on its Board!

This month the Create schedule draws upon a total of 56 series, not including special Saturday and Sunday marathons which utilize additional programming resources. The schedule contains the following genres: crafting (including sewing, quilting, painting, scrap booking and home décor), cooking, travel, gardening, home improvement and woodworking. The National Parks ReturnsOur National Parks system is an idea as uniquely American as the Declaration of Independence—and just as radical. Now the national parks cover 84 million acres…and all of it belongs to you.

Come rub elbows with Jessica Fellowes (author of The World of Downton Abbey and Chronicles of Downton Abbey) and find out everything you wanted to know—even things you didn’t know you wanted to know—about Downton Abbey! We’re turning the studio into our own “Grantham Arms” for the night—creating a pub-like atmosphere where “upstairs” and “downstairs” can come together for a casual evening of fun, laughter and plenty of dishing on Downton!
