Philip Weinberg1925-2012
Dr. Philip Weinberg, the man who brought Sesame Street to Central Illinois, died Thursday, February , 01. You may not recognize his name, but everyone who has used public broadcasting in this region has been touched by his considerable life’s work.He grew up in New York City, served in the South Pacific during World War II, and came home to marry the girl next door, Rose Jaffe, his wife of 64 years. Together they travelled and raised a family as Phil pursued his education in electrical engineering. The family came to Bradley University in 1956 where Phil was the founding chair in the Department of Engineering, a position he held for 0 years. His ability to combine technology and arts was unique. He was the driving force behind establish-ing WCBU-FM as a full power public radio station, and the founder of WTVP-TV as a commu-nity-owned public television station. He also established the Bradley University Office of Research Coordination and the Center for Learning Resources, founded the College of Communication and Fine Arts, and was influential in Bradley building initiatives including the Hartmann Center and the Dingledine Music Center.Phil was a philosopher and thinker of great ideas and schemes. He was a devoted family man, a real go-to guy, and the man you wanted by your side in a crisis. In his later days he was also a great storyteller, and enjoyed “making the rounds” of the various organizations he founded or supported
over his years. He enriched everyone with his presence and good humor, with his wit and wisdom. “Not bad,” he would say, “for a sailor from Brooklyn.”Our deepest condolences to his family. Phil will truly be missed by those who treasured him, and his vision will continue to live on through his legacy of public broadcasting.
Notes from the ChairmanMarch 2012On behalf of the Board of the Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation and the staff of WTVP, I am saddened to report the passing of Dr. Philip Weinberg, WTVP founder, advocate and friend. We will not forget to celebrate his many gifts and accomplishments to Central Illinois over these many years. Phil was a rare individual with the ability to dream wonderful dreams and then turn them into reality. We are all the beneficia-ries. Creating the College of Electrical Engineering at Bradley was among his proudest achievements. He very often spoke with fondness of former colleagues and students who went on to academic and professional success. And then there was WCBU Radio which allowed him to share his love of opera and the classics. However, the pinnacle of Phil’s legacy has to be WTVP. Perhaps this is our bias, too.Countless children over the past forty years have learned to read, count and be prepared for academic success thanks to Sesame Street and to public television that he created in Peoria. People in the tens of millions have been exposed to world-class science, arts, performances, citizenship, news, and so much more that would not have otherwise been possible without Phil’s vision and persistence. His work influenced generations of learners. What man could leave a better legacy? Each of us individually and as Phil’s WTVP family will miss him, his stories, his anecdotes, and his gentle prodding to con-tinue the mission he started. As we pass his portrait each time we walk into the WTVP studio, we are reminded that we stand on the shoulders of a great visionary. We are all the richer for his presence, and we are all most grateful for this exceptional man. We pledge to continue the mission he held so dear.

Dr. Wayne Dyer: Wishes fulfilled It is possible for every person to live an extraordinary life. Best-selling author, beloved spiritual teacher and internationally renowned lecturer Dr. Wayne Dyer returns to PBS for his ninth public broadcasting presentation. Based on his book Wishes Fulfilled: Mastering the Art of Manifesting, Dr. Dyer teaches that it is possible for all people to manifest their deepest desires — if they honor their inner divinity, consciously choose to live from their “Highest Self ” and practice the steps outlined in this presentation. DR. WAYNE DYER: WISHES FULFILLED premieres Saturday, March 3 from noon-3:00 p.m.
The program will encore Monday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Satur-day, March 10 at 2:00 p.m.
Using his trademark humor, Dr. Dyer introduces The Five Wishes Fulfilled Foundations, outlining a program for mastering the tools necessary for living a profoundly satisfying life. Viewers will learn how to use Imagination, Living From the End, Assuming the Feel-ing of the Wish Fulfilled, Attention, and the Last Five Minutes of Each Day to create new and astonishing thought patterns, while defeating unproductive and recurring habits. Dr. Dyer reminds viewers, “You can live and feel as if your future dreams are a present fact!” His belief in the power of every person to change his or her life, and live from the great-est possibilities, continues to keep PBS viewers absorbed and delighted by this marvelous teacher.

big band Vocalists (My Music)From Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day to Bob Crosby and Perry Como, this new MY MUSIC special looks back at the timeless “crooners” and “canaries” of the 1940s when they started their careers performing with orchestras and dance bands. Hosted by Nick Clooney and Peter Marshall, Big Band Vocalists (My Music) premieres Saturday, March 3 from 7-9:00 p.m. The program encores Friday, March 9 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Taken from long-unseen film footage dating from the 1940s and 1950s, this nostalgic look back offers romantic favorites from an all-star roster of legendary artists such as Louis Armstrong, Helen Forrest, Dick Haymes, Peggy Lee, Dinah Shore, Frank Sinatra, Jo Stafford & the Pied Pipers and many more. Among the classic World War II-era bands backing up the vocalists are groups led by Benny Goodman, Harry James, Bob Crosby, Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Duke Ellington, Ray Noble and others. Hits include “Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree,” “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” “Night & Day,” and Kate Smith’s incomparable “God Bless America.”

The Phantom returnsThe Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall celebrates the 5th anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking hit with a lavish production captured by GREAT PERFORMANCES. Premiering Sunday, March 4 from 6-10:00 p.m., the production stars Ramin Karimloo and Sierra Boggess as The Phantom and Christine, and includes a host of special guest stars including Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in performance at the conclusion of the play. The program encores Sunday, March 18 at 7:00 p.m.
To mark the beloved musical’s Silver Anniversary, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh presented “The Phantom of the Opera” in the sumptuous Victorian splendor of London’s Royal Albert Hall. This dazzling restaging of the original production recreates the jaw-drop-ping scenery and breathtaking special effects of the original, set to Lloyd Webber’s haunting score.Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the Phantom is drawn to the beautiful ingénue Christine Daaé and begins coaching her secretly, as a tragic romance unfolds between the unlikely pair. The play includes some of Lloyd Webber’s most beautiful and haunt-ing songs including “Music of the Night,” “All I Ask of You,” “Think of Me,” and “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again.”

finding your rootsProfessor Henry Louis Gates, Jr. builds on the success of his “African American Lives” in a new 10-part PBS series that journeys deep into the ancestry of remarkable individuals, exploring race, culture and identity through genealogy and genetics.Featuring Harry Connick, Jr., Robert Downey, Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, John Legend, Branford Marsalis, Condoleezza Rice, Barbara Walters, and many others, Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., accompanies these well known names as they trek through layers of ancestral history to uncover secrets and surprises of their family trees, sometimes revealing life-altering discoveries. Filmed on location across the United States, the series premieres on WTVP Tuesday, March 27 from 7-9:00 p.m. (2 hour-long episodes), and continues on Sundays through May 20 from 7-8:00 p.m.
“Finding Your Roots will be a moving, uplifting, entertaining and enlightening experience for viewers,” says Gates. “Genealogy is more popular than ever, but it’s far more than a solitary pastime. It’s a fascinating endeavor that can drastically alter both history and the way we think of ourselves.”
Superstars of 70s Soul liveSuperstars of Seventies Soul Live (My Music) is a once-in-a-lifetime gathering of legends — all original performers singing their greatest jammin’ hits. Soul diva Patti LaBelle (“Lady Marmalade”) hosts the historic reunion of classic recording artists of the decade, including the Commodores, original lead Eugene Record reuniting with the Chi-Lites, Heatwave, Earl Young’s Trammps, the Emotions and the Manhattans. Superstars of Seventies Soul Live (My Music), airs Wednesday, March 7 from 8:30-11 p.m. The program encores Saturday, March 10 also at 8:30 p.m.
“This special is a dream come true,” says executive producer TJ Lubinsky. You may not remember all their names but you know each and every one of their songs as the music that defined the soul of the 70s—“Lady Marmalade,” “Disco Inferno,” “If You Don’t Know Me By Now,” and “We Are Family” to name a few. Lubinsky spent two years tracking down the whereabouts of the original stars who made the original hit re-cords, finding the retired Yvonne (“If I Can’t Have You”) Elliman in Ha-waii and convincing her to perform again in public for the first time in 7 years. From “Flying” George (“Rock Your Baby”) McCrae, in from the Netherlands, to recording the Stylistics (“You Make Me Feel Brand New,” “Betcha By Golly Wow”) on location in Waymouth, England, Lubinksy traveled the world to bring these great songs and beloved artists back to national television.
