Slouchy Hats are in fashion, and Garter Stitchslouchy Hats are the 'must have'. What makesthis Hat so special is the colour combination –how you use the yarns and colours and how youcombine them creates this unique style.

By using 2 strands of yarn held together – one4ply/sock, the other DK/sport – we can build abeautiful Hat with graduating colours.

The 4ply yarn was the one constant throughoutthe Hat. Dyed as a semi-solid by BabyLongLegs,it created the base for all the other yarns to blendwith. I recommend using a single yarn for thebase, and a solid or semi-solid is ideal

The 2nd strand, the DK/sports yarn, was created

using oddments of yarn, all of the same weightand co-ordinating colours, joined together usingthe spit splice method. You can join them alltogether before you start, creating a skein to theapproximate weight/yardage required, or you can

join them as you go. I did the latter: I found itallowed me to be more creative with theplacement of colours.

The yarns used in this Hat can be purchasedhere: http://babylonglegs.co.uk

Do remember that Garter Stitch is very stretchyand will grow with wear.

Special Techniques:Tutorials for spit splicing and the Cable cast-onmethod can be downloaded in PDF format:http://www.woollywormhead.com/knitting-crochet/

How to:Using 2 strands of yarn held together asindicated above, and with 4.5mm needles, andusing a suitable cast-on method (I find a cablecast-on ideal for garter stitch edges), cast on 50[60, 70, 80] sts

Join in the round, being careful not to twist sts.Place stitch marker to indicate start of round.

Brim:Rnd 1: Purl all stsRnd 2: Knit all sts

These 2 rounds create Garter Stitch in the round.Repeat these 2 rounds until Brim measures 1[1.25, 1.5, 1.75] in/ 2.5 [3.25, 3.75, 4.5] cm (or

desired length) ending after a Rnd 1 then workincrease round once as follows:

Inc rnd: K5, M1; rpt from * to end [60, 72, 84, 96 sts]

Change to 5.5mm needles.

Body:Continue working Garter Stitch as given for theBrim until work measures 4 [4.75, 5.5, 6] in/10.25 [12, 14, 15.25] cm from the start of theBody section (or desired length) ending after a Rnd 2

Crown shaping:Rnd 1: * P2tog, ssp; rpt from * to end [30, 36, 42, 48

sts] Rnd 2: Knit all stsRnd 3: * P2tog, ssp; rpt from * to end [15, 18, 21, 24

sts]

Rnd 4: Knit all stsRnd 5: P 1 [0, 1, 0] * P2tog, ssp; rpt from * to end[8, 9, 11, 12 sts]

Rnd 6: Knit all sts

Break yarn and draw through remaining 8 [9, 11,12] stitches, tighten to close.

Finishing:

Weave in all ends. Whilst blocking would berecommended, garter stitch is incredibly stretchyand the body of the Hat will grow sufficiently withwear – excessive blocking will likely cause your Hat to become too big.
