Remember when you listened, sang, and danced to the great old tunes of the 1920's through 1940's? Has it been a while? Come to the Meriden Public Library on Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 pm and let the Survivors Swing Band revive those memories for you. A 7-piece professional jazz band, based in Connecticut, the Survivors Swing Band plays the classic melodies from an era gone by--hot tunes and soothing ballads of the Swing Era-- plus many of the wonderful melodies from the two decades that followed. The "Big Bands" played this
music with a high degree of rigid orchestration. The Survivors render it with a greater tilt towards improvisation, thus giving each pass at a tune somewhat of a new flavor while still keeping true to the original melodies. This program is free and all are welcome. It is funded by the Friends of Meriden Public L ib rar y and the Meriden Foundation. To reserve a seat, contact the C o m m u n i t y S e r v i c e s Department at (203) 630-6349, email [email protected] or sign up through the events calendar

Notes from the May 19 meeting: Frank Ridley noted that the Connecticut Library Association Advocacy Day turnout at the State Capitol on April 15 was very effective. Though the final budget vote has not yet taken place, most of the library funding has been restored thanks to the calls and letters from library supporters.
The Friends of Connecticut Libraries (our State organization) will hold its annual meeting and awards ceremony on Saturday, June 13, from 9:30 to 1 at Chapman Hall, Middlesex Community College in Middletown. There is no charge for the meeting but a $12 fee for those wanting to stay for lunch. Please let June Vandal know if you would like to attend.
Once again, the Friends will be supporting the Library's Summer Reading Programs by donating two tablets for grand prizes for the Teen and Adult programs. In addition, funds were provided for a museum pass to the Childrens’ Museum of Southeast CT and for an instructor for Spanish computer classes. Save the Date: The Friends Annual Social will be held on Friday, September 11 at 5 p.m. in the Library. All members are welcome. More information will be forthcoming.
The bookstore will be closed Memorial Day weekend, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 23rd, May 24th and May 25th. The bookstore will be closed Saturdays from July 4 through Labor Day.
The specials in the bookstore for the month of June will be Gardening/Fix-Up books and the featured author will be James Patterson, so his books will be at 1/2 price for the month of June.

Do you enjoy planting flowers? Have a garden and need to thin out those perennials? Why not donate a
plant or two to the Meriden Public Library. We are looking for assistance with plants for the library grounds, so if you have a plant to spare, we will take it and find a home for it at the library. Or if you would like to help us plant and maintain the library grounds, we will be overjoyed to have your help. Please contact the Community Services Department at (203) 630-6349 if you would like to help or have any questions.
