GMES – Global Monitoring for Environment and Security
A joint project of European Commission and European Space Agency. First conceived in 1998
To support the monitoring needed to pursue European policies for sustainable use and protection of the environment
Monitoring system includes space, in situ and modelling components
Services delivering benefits are part of GMES GMES is viewed as the European level
contribution to GEO Sustainability of monitoring system is a key issue

GMES – Fast track workshops
3 fast-track services identified for implementation by 2008 (2012): marine, land and emergency response
Workshop held 27-28 October to review fast-track status of marine component
Break-out sessions on: needs and requirements Implementation Sustainability (including dependence on observations)
Recommendations: Implement a network of regional and global forecast systems Support for content of GMES space component programme
Commission is likely to set up an Implementation Group
