THe PHoTogRAPHS in this collec-tion are mainly the work of Thomas Wynne, who established a success-ful family business over 120 years ago in Castlebar, Co Mayo. Thomas J Wynne was born in 1838 and his mother was from Ballyglass in Mayo. After living in America, where he is believed to have acquired his photographic skills, Thomas, aged 23, set up his lending library and shop in Castle Street, Castlebar. He then diversified into photography, promoting this branch of the business through advertising, excursions and sale of prints. on the first excursion by steamer about 150 passengers paid two shillings and six pence for a day’s outing. Thomas was also active in taking portraits, many of which record soldiers in the Castlebar Barracks, and events, such as evictions. Thomas had a diversity of interests, including auctioneering. Thomas died in 1893 at the relatively young age of 55. He had
been married twice, his first wife died in childbirth in 1862, and he had six sons and five daughters. On Thomas’s death, his youngest son, Richard took over the business, and he in turn was succeeded by his son, Desmond. Thomas’s fourth child, Thomas Augustus, established a shop in Main Street, Castlebar, which was run by the family until it closed recently.
Notes based on a record by Bridin Treacy, a Wynne family relative.
Shop lined street in Béal an Atha, Ballina, and obviously not much competition from passing traffic. The shopkeeper on the right had time enough to stand still for the slow shutter, but the boy carrying what looks like a wicker creel was on the move. Ballina, which began growing as a weaving centre in 1729, has always been a thriving town. By the 19th century the town had a busy port, a large brewery, a snuff works, and several fee-paying educational establishments for the children of prosperous traders. When the N5 was extended to favour Castlebar, Ballina lost out, but in spite of this setback the town, with a strong trading tradition, has certainly regained its position as a magnet for shoppers.Wynne collection, reference DS10147

Archival prints can be ordered from many of the photographs in this collection. As above in this photograph of Ballina, a white border is inclused to allow for framing.
