Dear Editor
In Auckland, we have started to charge admission to majorITFNZ Taekwon-Do tournaments and reduced competitorentry fees. Charging for admission is part of a strategy toincrease the public profile of ITFNZ Taekwon-Do. In future,we will send free passes to local radio stations andnewspapers to give away as prizes. Complimentary passesto something with free admission have no value. Indeed, people unconsiously place less value on something thatis free than something for which they pay. (Do you buydrinking water, or do you refuse to pay for it because youdo not think it is worth $2 a bottle?)
This method will have three key benefits. First, they giveus free radio and newspaper advertising, which reach morepeople than circumstantial passers-by and increase publicawareness. Second, anybody who makes use of thosepasses may join ITFNZ Taekwon-Do, increasing ourmembership. Third, these people may bring friends, whowill pay for admission, so we can reduce the financialburden of tournaments on our members by transferringsome of it to the general public.
Many activities charge admission into major events, including gymnastics, dance and music. Some martial artsgroups charge up to $8 per person for local tournaments! In some ways we are following their lead. But we havevery clear reasons for doing so. If we find the techniquesuccessful, we will encourage its spread to other regions.
Mark BanicevichDirector of Marketing.
Dear Editor,
I was re-reading an old copy of TKD Talk the other day(Nov 2000) and I found an article about the Sports Expothat we were involved in last year.
It was an awesome event. (More than 30 hours of trainingover 2 days and so many people!) I know there were otherslooking foward to doing it all again this year, but we'veheard nothing of when it is going to be held.
Can anyone out there give us some information on whenthe Expo is going to be held this year so we can starttelling everyone else about it nice and early? It would beterrible if we missed it just because no-one thought to ask.
Yours in TKD.Always...Haydn CainII Dan

It is a special honour to be chosen torepresent your country, and it waswith a feeling of this privilege as wellas a fair degree of nervousness andanticipation that the team departedNew Zealand in late June 2001 for the12th World Championships in Rimini,Italy.
Fantastic coverage of theChampionships was provided via theITFNZ website by Mr McPhail andthe Breen family, so this article willattempt not to replicate thisinformation with a blow-by-blowchronological account of whathappened. Rather we hope to givereaders an idea of what it is like tocompete in such as event, and also toshare some (hopefully) interestingexperiences that we had.
We had a couple of days in Rome
before heading up to Rimini. We tookthe chance to do some sightseeingaround the historic sights, althoughwith the constant thought of thecompetition that was looming it wasdifficult to ever fully relax. Everyonewas also terrified of injuring ourselvesor getting sick, and then accordingMurphyís Law, Kylee tripped comingdown the steps of St Peterís Cathedralin the Vatican City, wrenching her toethat had been healing from a previousinjury. Thankfully, in the end she wasable to compete without it botheringher too much. A highlight for manywhile in Rome was the Colosseum, theultimate competition arena, and I thinkmany were glad we were only to befacing Koreans and Polish in the ringrather than armed gladiators andhungry tigers. The two days in Rimini before thecompetition started were spent
nervously filling in time and also acouple of sweaty training sessions.Everyone was feeling pretty good, although the heat was tough. Manymay have heard of Toniís ìordealîmaking weight for her sparringdivision, although can we just re-emphasize the whole-heartedcommitment she displayed in sweatingit out for hours that morning and theneven having her hair cut off. It wasinspiring for everyone to see this levelof dedication demonstrated.
When the competition began, theattitude and professionalism ofeveryone there was obvious. In thesparring, certain competitors reallyseemed to stand out, and some of theskills were nothing short of incredible. As always, the sparring was hard withvery few fouls being called forexcessive contact. The sparringseemed to be particularly furious thistime with less of the ìbouncing andwaitingî seen previously, perhaps duein part to the ring-size being down to8x8m rather than 9x9m.
In terms of the patterns, once again
World Championships 2001 - Competitors’ Insights
On the day of Toni’s weigh in, she was2kg over her limit. She rose at 6:25amand hit the hotel treadmill clothed intracksuits. At 7:15am, she had to stopbecause the bus was early. Tonicontinued to train waiting for the bus,and in the centre. At 9:45am, sheweighed in at 1kg over. She was tired, shaking and looking unwell, and had only
45mins to lose the weight – Mr Salton andMr McPhail recommended she stop twoor three times. But Toni refused to giveup.
Mr McPhail wrote: “Toni was amazing...sheworked harder than I have seen her andshowed a spirit that was inspiring to all ofus. Those team members who were there
joined in and helped, and she was nearcollapse at 10.30am. Finally Toni insistedthat Carmen CUT HER HAIR, as it wasso wet and heavy.”
When she was called up at 10:30am,Toni made the limit. The team was sorelieved – everyone was hugging andcrying. For Mr McPhail, this was ahighlight of the tournament.

the judges seemed to favour the crisp, rigid style over technical correctness;frustrating when you have trained sohard to be technically correct. Anotherthing the Koreans in particular do isflick their head in the direction of the
technique at the last second. Astrategy of the Koreansí duringpatterns competition was to often waitand choose the same optional patternas their opponent, thus counting onany one of their patterns being betterthan their opponentís favourite one.For team sparring, we also noticed thatthe Korean men sometimes only took3 sets of sparring gear into the ring ñthat is confidence.
Actually, this occurred because theywere using borrowed sparring gear, andwe had to limit team sparring to threesets of gear per team. Otherwise we’dhave run out.
The menís hyper-weight sparring finalbetween Korea and Poland I foundparticularly interesting. Early in thefirst round the Korean fell awkwardlyand dislocated his shoulder. The firstaid personnel spent some time withhim and managed to relocate it intoplace, however he was obviously stillin a great deal of pain. He looked acrossto his coach who sternly motioned himto continue. The bout restarted, however the Korean was clutching hisinjured arm into his side and wascompletely unable to defend himself. As he was getting pummeled, he keptlooking across to his coach whocontinued to urge him on. After a shortwhile the referee stopped the bout tothe disgust of the Korean coach butthe relief of everyone else. I felt as if
the Korean coach was making astatement on behalf of the team of thedegree of their spirit and that Koreawould never quit. The ethics of thisare somewhat questionable, howeverit was a striking example of the attitudeof the countries competing there.
Some of the womenís sparring at thetournament stood out from the rest. One of the noisiest was the matchbetween the Slovenian andArgentinean womenís micro-weights.While the two determined ladieshammered each other with super-fastkicks and near knock-out punches, their supporters cheered and it wasall LOUD. The Slovenian supporterswere jumping up and down on thebleachers armed with a big drum, chanting along to an energetic beatìGO BIANCA, GO!î In their handsthey waved around huge block lettersthat read their words. After the secondbout and much suspense the result
was a draw so a third round wasfought and what a round it was. Bothcompetitors looked absolutelyhammered but were determined to winand showed great spirit. In the endthe Slovenian girlís hand was raisedand the disappointed Argentineancoach got up and snatched an appealform from the judges. He obviouslyhad other thoughts on the match butdid go and congratulate the winnerand her coach. Bianca Tapilatu wenton to win gold in the division and laterin the competition in the menís light-weight another Slovenian, TomazBarada, took a gold. It turned out tobe her partner, now how cool is that?Bianca’s parents were part of theOrganising Committee - wow, were theyproud parents! Her coach was noneother than our old friend, Mr Willy van deMortel.
Another awesome spectacle wasbetween previous World Champswomenís light-weight gold medallist,Julia Cross, from Scotland and the 1997Russia World Champs gold medallistfrom Germany. After ìjunbiî beforeeach round both girls practicallyroared at each other as opposed tokihap. Tremendous skill was exhibitedby both competitors. The German girlspat out sidekicks like lighteningaccompanied by thunderous kihapglaring at her opponent with absolutedetermination and confidence. MsCross countered with whippingreverse hooking kicks with just asmuch sting and aggression. She wasbacked by the Scottish team cheering,ìYOU ARE JULIA, YOU AREJULIA!î. After two rounds ofawesome sparring a draw was calledso we were lucky to witness a thirdround between the two girls. The lastround got really intense where bothcompetitors spat out fire-likecombinations, but in the end theGerman girl managed to outscore heropponent and won bronze. We had alittle chat with Ms Cross afterwardsand found out that it was her fifth timecompeting at the Champs and on herfirst attempt she won bronze. She hadalso been suffering the effects of foodpoisoning in the days leading up tothe competition.
Ms Cross’ food poisoning was quiteserious. She had spent a couple of daysin hospital, and had to pull out of thepatterns division. She was verydisappointed.
The last two days of the tournamentwere particularly interesting with allthe semi-finals and the finals ofcompetition. One memory waswatching the Korean womenís middle-weight sparrer win gold, then quickly

whipping off her sparring gear, whilegetting an earful from her coach, jumpin the neighboring ring for the 3rd danpatterns final. In between her optionaland designated patterns as she turnedaround to redo her belt she looked upat her coach who seemed to still beyelling something at her with a lookto kill on her face. The Korean wonthe patterns round and ran happilyinto her coaches arms who nowappeared overjoyed with herperformance. Looking around at someof the other competitors and theircoaches the similar focus on winningwas seen. We saw one girl get hitacross the face by her coach at half-time during a sparring match andanother got punched in the chest.Ouch!
The last day of the competition endedwith us doing a fantastic haka on thecenter ring after Master Bos hadfinished all the formal presentations. The boys in the middle looked very
energetic, shirtless with team tracksuitpants, and the girls skillfully swingingtheir poi on the outskirts in a moremodest version of the tracksuit.Everyone enjoyed the performance. Alot of people wanted to swap for theNZ team tracksuit but not many of uswanted to part with our lovelygarments, so for all you future NZteam competitors be ready to be eyedup and down by hungry tracksuitswappers. The Champs ended with anawesome party at a club about anhour away from our Hotel. We allpartied the night away, with somecutting it fine on their train and flightconnections the next morning.
While the team was naturallydisappointed not to come away withany medals this time, we felt overallthat we had performed well and with abit more luck we could have had a fewmedals. So we know that we werecompetitive and return home with ourheads held high. The 2001 NZTaekwon-Do team members would liketo take this final opportunity to thankall those who supported us in our bidto take on the worldís best. Inparticular our coaches Mr Salton andMr McPhail, our managers Carmenand Debbie, our major sponsorsITFNZ Taekwon-Do and BotanyDowns Town Centre, our individualsponsors and all supporters backhome. So ask yourself, do you thinkyou have what it takes for Poland2003Ö? Have a go and find out!

The tournament was held at theGymsport and Recreation Centrein Papakura. For the CountiesManukau Team our journey to thetournament started about fiveweeks ago, with our first CountiesManukau team training. Everyonewas trying hard to make the squadwith Mr Impson and Mr Insulldoing their best to make us fit andlean for the upcoming events.
The weeks went quickly, and nextthing we knew it was Friday: timefor the official weigh in and heightcheck, and for the out-of-townersto check out the venue. Saturdaymorning the Counties Manukauteam met at 7:30 sharp at thePapakura dojang. Everyone wasnervous but looking forward towhat lay ahead. Then off to theNationals we went.
As we arrived the heart startedpumping as we saw the otherteams arriving, everyone proudlywearing their team uniforms. Onceinside it was time to check thedraws to see when we were on.The gym was well set up with 3rings. First up was patterns whichis always a good way of gettingrid of your nerves. Spirits werehigh with all competitors tryingtheir best, and excellent supportfrom team members shouting outto their team mates. Competitionwas high but only the three best ineach event would receive medals.
After the patterns it was straightinto sparring with the ring marshals
having the bouts flow on one afterthe other. Sparring was great, everyone was getting into it:supporting their team members asthey did their best to score morepoints than their opponent;seconds helped by giving adviceand support; and the referees didtheir best to keep the bouts clean.Unfortunately accidents did occurand there were a few incidentswhere St Johns personnel wererequired. The well trained St Johnsladies had everything undercontrol, and for those competitorswho were feeling a bit sore weeven had Mr Gillon to give atherapeutic massage.
By the end of the first day we
knew who had made it through tothe finals of sparring and weheaded home for a bit of wellearned relaxation. Saturday nightwe headed for the PapakuraNetball Centre where the dinnerand Awards ceremony was takingplace. After a good meal and a fewdrinks it was into the speecheswhich all went well, it was alsogood to see and hear from theWorld Championships team.
Sunday morning we arrived earlyand prepared for the final day.Starting off we were straight intothe finals where we saw someexcellent techniques performed. Itwas good to see all members fromall regions upholding the tenets of
Taekwon-Do. The second daysaw a lot of close bouts but onlyone could win gold on the day.
By lunchtime the sparring wascompleted and was followed withspecial techniques, power breaksand team patterns which is alwaysexciting to watch with each regioneager for gold.
At the conclusion of the teampatterns we were instructed toform up for the awardpresentations. We were honouredto have special guests Mr GregSkinner (General Manager ofEpson NZ, the tournamentsponsor) and Mr Bruce Pulman(the major sponsor of the venue)to help Mr Evan Davidson, MrPaul McPhail and Mrs Sue Breenaward the trophies. All competitorswere cheered while receiving theirawards for their efforts over theweekend. By 5 oíclock we hadcalled it a night with teams headingfor home.
We would like to say a specialthank you to everyone who tookpart in organising and helping tomake this the best Nationals ever, which we believe was a completesuccess. We also thank everyonewho stayed behind to help cleanup.

This year, July 28th and 29th were twospecial days for the Auckland NorthTaekwon-Do team. Indeed they weretwo special days for Taekwon-Doenthusiasts all over the country. It wason these two days that AucklandNorth (and all the other regions) woulddiscover if the weeks of laborioustraining were to realise both individualdreams of gold and the dream of beingcrowned ìBest Overall Regionî.
Nationals 2001 was an efficient anddignified affair thanks to our awesomesponsor Epson, the fantasticorganising by our hosting districtCounties Manukau, and the manyvolunteers that were to give their timeand effort. This prime combinationcreated an environment in which thecompetitors flourished. We hope tosee more of the same excellentorganising in Nationals to come.Auckland North plunged into thisìcompetitorsí heavenî for Nationals2001 hoping to find the road to glory.
Nicola and Nick stampeded their waythrough the scores of yellow belts topluck out gold and bronze alongsideAmanda, who had to settle for a silverafter taking out many a disappointedblue belt. These, the first medals forAuckland North, gave theirteammates a taste for more. Mr Looiand Mr Breen took two of the three IIIdan patterns medals. Ever thegentlemen, they allowed Mr Mantjikato take the gold. Mr Trotter followedsuit and conferred the honour of goldon Miss Toni Moki although it meantthat he was out of the medals.
Sparring erupted and we were to seesome awesome bouts to take out thegold. The menís red belt divisions
proved scary to watch, with themagnitude of power and speedthrown around. In menís III dan andabove, Mr Hong Looi explodedseveral times in an exciting final thatprompted the Auckland Northcoaches to bestow on him the statusof ìlegendî.
He also took out the gold medal forspecial technique, further justifing hislegendary status. Alix and Sam flewthe best they could in their specialtechnique divisions and landedsoundly with welcome bronze andsilver.
It was a tough battle for some of ourcompetitors. They were all greatpractitioners but they were up againstother ìgreatsî like themselves, thebest in NZ. Alas, in tournaments thereality is that somebody has to missout. It goes to show just how highthe standard of Taekwon-Do in NZ isrising.
Amandaís patterns and sparring skillsgave her a share of the ìBest OverallBlue Beltî award. This and the awardsfor Black Belt and Coloured Belt Teampatterns were added to the hard
Two Special Daysfought mountain of medals. Thismountain was the spoils oftremendous efforts by the AucklandNorth team together. And with thismountain it was to be that AucklandNorth was named ìBest OverallRegionî. That would be enough tosend anyone running down from thespectator stands to join Mr Breenreceiving the trophy, which is exactlywhat our coach Mr Niven and managerMr Matsuoka did. Mr Francis Fongand Mrs Shirley Pygott, who put a lotof valuable effort into the team, werea bit more conservative and opted tosmile down from the spectator stands.
And now those two special days areover. We leave them, some with dreamsrealised and others with hopes yet tobe fulfilled at a later date. Maybe nextyear we will come back to our coacheswho pushed and inspired us and toour manager who fed and fussed overus for another two special days.

The annual awards dinner was heldon the Saturday night of the Nationals. It was the social highlight of theweekend and also a time when wewere able to honour some of the greatwork that has taken place over the lasttwenty years in Taekwon-Do. Fiveannual awards were presented: BestInstructor, Best Gup and DanStudents, Best Club, and of course theprestigious Presidentís Award.
Best Instructor went to Mr DanielMotu from the Rangitikei Dragonsclub (Central Districts) which alsoclaimed Best Club. This award wasmuch deserved as Mr Motu hasdramatically changed this club for thebetter. Last year it had twelve membersand now it has above thirty! Well doneMr Motu and the Rangitikei Dragonsfor all your hard work over the lastyear.
Best Dan Student went to Sandi Galpinof Palmerston North Taekwon-DoAcademy and Best Kup Student wentto Renee Faleseuga from Horowhenuaclub. Both these awards are receivedby students who demonstrate a goodunderstanding of the tenets and whoalso show outstanding dedication tothe art. It is reassuring to know thatthe future of our organisation is in thehands of people like Renee and Sandi.
Well done to Central Districts whoswept up four of the five prizes, a greateffort indeed. All awards receivedwere greatly deserved and a bigcongratulations to those who won theawards and also to all who werenominated ñ you guys are great!
A big thumbs up must also go to Mr

It is wonderful forthe junior and senior members alike tohave such dedicated and talentedsenior dans to look up to and aspireto be like: we thank Mr Banicevich forthat.
Auckland North, who had beenëgracingí others with their delightfulvoices all day, made no attempt torestrict the noise to tournament onlyand many cheers were heard from theirside of the room.
The dinner was wonderfullyorganised and all who attended had areally great time. We thought that thevenue was perfect and had everythingwe needed ñ including a bar (not forjuniors of course!). The food wasdelicious and catered for a widevariety of tastes (especially thosedesserts!). We are sure that you willall agree that a good meal was justwhat everyone needed after a fulfillingday of competition.
Thank you to Central Districts whoentertained us for most of the nightwith their ëCoke can tower buildingískills. Unfortunately it did not last, andbeing the person he is, MatthewBreen could never say no to a goodchallenge - he built a tower on theAuckland North table whichcontained almost twenty cansstacked vertically on top of each otherñ a great effort Matty!!
The ëfestivitiesí (as Mr Banicevichwould call them) began at around
10.00pm and for those who were notcompeting the next day a great nightwas had. There was a live DJ and reallycool lights which created anatmosphere very different to that ofthe stressful tournament. It wasawesome to see everyone out of theirdobok and a great chance to catch upwith others from around the country. You could tell on Sunday thateveryone was a lot better acquaintedwith one another.
Overall the night was one to remember.Counties Manukau did a fantastic joband should be proud of such asuccessful evening. We hope thateveryone else had a good time andlook forward to seeing you all next yearin WaiBopTaranaki!! Taekwon.

I met Master Wim (pronounced ìVimî)Bos a couple of times when I lived inEurope in 1994 and 1995, and kept intouch when I came home. When I heardhe was hosting the 12th WorldChampionships, I emailed him and saidI was looking forward to travelling tothe event, maybe as an umpire. MasterBos asked me if I would like to help onthe Organising Committee. After initialconcerns as to what this involved, Ijumped at the chance. Master Bosassured me that my involvement wouldbe purely at the event, from 1 to 9 July2001.
On 19 January, I received an email fromMaster Bos that listed my duties asìofficial and closing ceremonycoordinator, inside - outside hallarrangements, congress hallcoordinatorî and I was one of manywith secretarial duties. Quite a list!Others on the list of organisers werelike a Whoís Who of ITF Taekwon-Doin Europe - I thought I had better getgood at making coffee!
The next six months passed withoutfurther detail from Master Bos(although he did say my ìwifeî couldhelp too!). I was becoming a bitconcerned because nationaltournaments involve enough work.Master Bos was very relaxed, ìJust callme when you arrive in Rome.î
The day after we arrived in Rome (mybirthday), Master Bos took Michelleand I out to dinner. I discovered wehad no need for concern. Master Boshad everything under control. Wechatted over a lovely meal, and I got topick his brains a bit about tournamentrules. A few days later we met for lunch,
and I took a photograph of Master Boswith his scooter (a most common modeof transport in Rome, but quite acontrast to his Mercedes).
Michelle and I arrived in Rimini on 1July. The New Zealand team had arriveda day earlier, and it was great to seethem. We couldnít talk long, however, because we were just in time for lunchat the hotel. After lunch, we went backto the venue and helped to set up thecentre.
We soon discovered our roles weremore ìstaffî than ìorganisersî. Wehelped put up flags, laid the mats forthe centre ring and created ad hocsigns. (It is very difficult to usePowerPoint in Italian!) We hadnumerous laughs and languagedifficulties with the other staff (a teamof Master Bosí students). Fortunatelythere was a Scotsman, Mr JohnMcIllvany, with whom we couldconverse more freely. (Unfortunately Imissed the biggest laugh. The teamwere bringing out big wooden boardsto stack for the awards podium, andJohn came out lugging a huge woodencross on his shoulder. ìWhat do I dowith this?î)
Michelle, who only recently joinedTaekwon-Do, ended up helping withthe VIPs. This was entertaining attimes. ìWhoís that?î ìThatís GrandMaster Park Jung Soo.î ìWhoís that?îìThatís Master Choi Jung Hwa.î Andthe all time classic: ìOne of the mastersgave me a pen - that nice one whotranslated for General Choi.î ìGrandMaster Rhee.î ìYes. How will Iremember who it is from?î ìThat imageon the side is from a famous photo of
Organising the World Championships?Grand Master Rhee doing a twodirection kick.î ìOh.î
I spent all four competition dayssecuring one of the entrances to thecompetition area. It was a greatopportunity to meet coaches and seeold friends. I also got some of the bestviews of the tournament: all of AaronMcIlweeís bouts were in my ring (ahighlight for me), among others.
I also had the opportunity to attendthe ITF Congress as an observer. MrMcPhail and Mr Patterson attended onbehalf of New Zealand. Some of it wasquite bureaucratic, such as voting onthe minutes of the last Congress andreading the accounts. Voting forofficers, on the other hand, arouseddebate. It was voted that General Choiwould do the next two years of a sixyear term as President of the ITF, atwhich point Master Choi Jung Hwawould assume the role. Heated debatealso surrounded the timing of the nextWorld Championships. The meetingwas most competently chaired by thenew ITF legal adviser, Mr MichaelTibollo.
It was a very tiring week. We workedquite long hours, and only made it tothe beach for five minutes on the nightof the party. However, it was a fantasticexperience, and I learned a lot aboutrunning such an efficient tournament.Master Bos was wonderful to us, aswere the other organisers and staff. Iwould like to offer them my sincerethanks, and I look forward to (umpiringin) Warsaw in 2003. Maybe one daywe could host a World Championshiptournament in New ZealandÖ

This is a new feature especially for our junior members. Admiral Yi Sun-Sin is one of Korea’s mostfamous military heroes, (and may well havegot the prize for best dressed male in a militarycategory.) He was so good at outsmarting theenemy at sea, that if they thought he was goingto show up to a battle then they almost didn’tbother. One of the coloured belt patterns isnamed after Admiral Yi.Is it a.Won-Hyo , b. Choong-Moo or c. Yul-Gok ?
Admiral Yi is most famous for inventing a special typeof fighting ship, called Kobukson (turtle-boat).
Why was it named after a turtle?a.It looked like a turtle.b.It moved slowly like a turtle.c. It was really good for hiding in.
In the late 1500’s, the Shogun of Japan sent his troops to invadeKorea. Their Man-of-War boats each had one cannon and muskets.

LET’S GO AND KICK SOMEKOREAN BUTTS. WE’LL MAKECHOPSTICKS OUT OF THEM!.
Admiral Yi put his strange looking kobukson boats to sea, and set outto meet the invading Japanese man-of-war fleet.
WE’LL USE OUR 40 CANNONSTO BLOW THEM AWAY BEFORETHEY GET ANYWHERE NEAR US!
Nothing the Japanese fired at the Kobukson could get through thethick shell top. Admiral Yi chased the Japanese and blew them up.
