xL Carp historyFryerning Fisheries, the home of XL Carp, was
set up over 25 years ago when owner Chris
Knowles excavated the Main Lake, intending
to create a centre of excellence for Carp
fishing. Much has been added in subsequent
years, including two smaller lakes, a lodge
and a state-of-the-art hatchery dedicated
to breeding top-class English fish. XL Carp
has worked closely with others, including
manufacturers, suppliers and government
agencies, to develop the facilities to the
superb standard our members enjoy today
and that set a benchmark for the sport.

The Main Lake is the Jewel in the XL Carp
crown – 18 acres of scientifically-managed
water, with depths ranging from three to 18
feet, stocked with plenty of big, hard-fighting
English Carp up to 40+lbs. This water is not
for beginners but experienced anglers will
enjoy pitting their wits against the fish in an
environment that allows for a great angling

Valley LakeThe Valley Lake has a maximum depth of twelve to thirteen feet
and an average depth of eight feet, containing plenty of features
including a excellent thirty to forty meter bar. It is stocked with 6
x 30-37lb, with around 100 x 20lb – again, English fish from our
hatchery that are bred in accordance with the latest aquaculture
techniques. The quality of fishing in this water is just as high as
in the larger lake and is suitable for all levels in the sport – from
beginners to intermediates to experts.

The Car Park Lake is intimate, reed-lined water and, as it is shallower
(3-9ft) than the Main Lake, it is highly suitable for floater fishing.
The lake is stocked with 4 x 30lb, plus around 40 x 20lb for you to pit
your wits against. The hand-reared English fish in this lake are some
of the best on the complex and come from our bespoke hatchery.
With the right genetics we are achieving a phenomenal growth rate
from egg to 30lb in 10 years, ensuring the waters will always be well-
stocked at Fryerning.

Our state-of-the-art hatchery breeds fast-
growing, top-quality English Carp and the
programme operates with the close co-
operation of CEFAS and DEFRA, government
agencies with unrivalled experience in the
field. Our fish grow quickly to their optimum
weight (2lb growth rate per month has
been verified) and are always in prime
condition, qualities we look to maintain in our
aquaculture programmes. The fish develop in
11 closely-monitored stock ponds before they
are released into the lakes.
Fishing is not just about sitting lakeside and
waiting for a bite. Our comfortable lodge,
overlooking the Main Lake, offers anglers the
chance to enjoy a well-deserved cup of tea
and a chat with other fishermen.

Fryerning Fisheries offers a complete range of bespoke fishery services,
from lake design, planning permission application, construction and
maintenance to rearing fast-growing healthy English Carp. We also
provide top-quality consultation on important aspects of commercial
operation like financial planning, accounting, admin systems and effective
marketing once you are up and running. On the fish- breeding side we
have worked exhaustively on our own aquaculture programme under
