MASTERPIECE 1

After a year of great challenge, sacrifice and courage, we celebrate the opportunity for all of us to gather once again and return to be a community that is blessed by beautiful music and unforgettable experiences .

As the Cape Symphony once again takes center stage, we honor our heroes who stepped forward so magnificently to help their nation in need. We pay tribute to the frontline and essential workers — nurses, doctors, first responders, and teachers — with John Williams’ “Summon the Heroes.” We’ll also recognize the 20th anniversary of 9/11 with “Towers of Light,” inspired by the light tributes held at Ground Zero every year .

Though we missed our celebration of Beethoven’s 250th birthday in 2020, we’ll present his rousing “Egmont Overture,” a thrilling tribute to resistance against tyranny . Johannes Brahms’ Second Symphony is a hopeful, sunny work that will lighten all our hearts as we look forward to a bright future . Please join us for this uplifting community celebration as we return to what we love best: sharing great music with all of you .

“Why, this car is automatic. It’s systematic. It’s hyyyyydromatic. Why, it’s Greased Lightnin’!” And it’s coming to Hyannis with the Cape Symphony! 1978’s summer blockbuster Grease, starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, launched some of the most popular songs of all time, including “Summer Nights,” “You’re the One That I Want,” “We Go Together,” and more .

“Hopelessly Devoted to You” was nominated for an Oscar, “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” made a star of Stockard Channing, and Sha-Na-Na starred as the high school dance band, belting out classics like “Hound Dog” and “Born to Hand Jive .”

Forty-plus years after the film’s release, Grease remains one of the most popular movie musicals of all time . The T-Birds and Pink Ladies of our orchestra will perform the unforgettable soundtrack live to the full-length film. Join us and see why “Grease” is still the word!

JONATHAN PERRY

A three-masted ship, battered by the North Atlantic winds, finds shelter in a natural harbor. This arrival on Cape Cod changed the history of America. We honor the 401st anniversary of the Mayflower’s arrival, and look beyond with hope as we continue to strive towards the ideals of democracy and equality .

In partnership with the Plymouth Philharmonic, we commissioned two phenomenal works: “Mayflower” commemorates the Pilgrims’ journey and the creation of the Mayflower Compact. “Wampanoag: Stories For All Time” features native singer and storyteller Jonathan Perry sharing meaningful stories of the indigenous people who thrived here long before the arrival of the Mayflower.

To continue this reflective journey, we also commissioned another extraordinary work: “#Elijah,” in memory of Elijah McClain, who loved playing the violin and sharing his joy . Randall Goosby, a virtuosic Juilliard student of legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, will premiere this powerful and moving piece .

We’ll conclude with Anton Dvorak’s New World Symphony, a celebration of American potential, highly influenced by multicultural music . One of Dvorak’s students put words to the longing melody (“Goin’ Home”) from the second movement, creating a popular song evocative of a spiritual .

The holiday season begins with the Cape Symphony! We gather to share joyous music and moments that put us all in a holiday mood. We’ll celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Cape’s beloved Chatham Chorale . Deanna Loveland, a multi-talented Nashville singer/songwriter/pianist/harpist, joins us . We’ll also premiere a new work focused on Hanukkah, performed by cantor Samantha Stinson .

Emmy-winning author and journalist David Pogue of “CBS Sunday Morning” and the New York Times will appear in his other roles as musician, conductor, and music lover . Add a children’s chorus, plus a sing-a-long for all to enjoy, and the result is a wonderful holiday celebration!

Put on your favorite green and join us on an unforgettable musical adventure to Ireland! For our trip to the Emerald Isle, we’re bringing along two stellar artists who will transport us all! GRAMMY-winning Eileen Ivers is the world’s pre-eminent Irish fiddler today and we’re delighted to have her back on the Cape Symphony stage . The Irish Times says, “She electrifies the crowd with a dazzling show of virtuoso playing.” Phenomenal Celtic harp player Maeve Gilchrist takes the instrument to new heights . She tours with Yo-Yo Ma’s Silkroad Ensemble and is the co-music director of WGBH’s Christmas Celtic Sojourn . The Irish Times said her recent album is “a snapshot of a musician at the top of her game .”

We’ll feature important Irish composers Arthur Duff, Hamilton Harty, and Bodley Seóirse, each contributing a unique voice to the various periods of Irish symphonic music . Percy Grainger’s version of “Danny Boy,” recorded by Leopold Stokowski, shows how Irish folk music can be set in a sophisticated way . Together with two superstars of Irish music, we’ll bring you a fabulous experience.

Hamilton . That word means one thing these days: the hottest musical in the world. We’re thrilled to bring you the current touring star of this theatrical phenomenon, appearing across the country as Alexander Hamilton . Partnered with the lead singer of the Glenn Miller Orchestra, they’ve created an unforgettable show of swing and Motown hits .

These crooners sing with powerful charisma in numbers like “Georgia On My Mind” and “A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square.” Show-stoppers like “For Once In My Life” and “It’s Not Unusual” will pack the show with explosive energy. Whether it’s a classic of the American songbook like “Just One of Those Things” or a gorgeous combination of “Blue Moon” and “Moondance,” Julius and Mark have an unmatched ability to connect with audiences .

On top of extraordinary vocals, what makes this duo so fun is the ease and chemistry between these long-time friends. With 30+ combined years of performing under their belts, the stories they share come from a heartfelt love for this music .

Two guys. Two incredible voices. So much fun!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARYOn April 4, 1962, Jennings Butterfield led a fledgling

group of amateur musicians along with a person the Cape Cod Standard-Times described as a “young American soprano,” who was the soon-to-be-famous Beverly Sills!

To celebrate this momentous occasion, we’ll recreate the original 1962 concert, with our trademark touches of imagination and fun. We’ll be joined by special guest and friend of the Cape Symphony acclaimed pianist Jon Nakamatsu, who is celebrating his own anniversary: 25 years since his stunning Gold Medal victory at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Jon will perform the masterpiece that made Van Cliburn famous: Tchaikovsky’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 1.

That 1962 program included a wide variety of delightful music, such as Mozart’s “Impresario Overture” and “Fantasia on Greensleeves” by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Two pieces for soprano will feature Alexandra Nowakowski: the acrobatic “Una Voce Poco Fa” by Gioachino Rossini from The Barber of Seville, and the sublime “Depuis le Jour” from Louise by Gustave Charpentier .

Our celebration will only be complete if you join us!

CapePOPS! 4

Back by popular demand, Classical Mystery Tour is simply the best Beatles show in the world, bar none . Our sold-out audiences gave this acclaimed group and our orchestra multiple standing ovations, so we just had to bring them back for an encore!

Hear “Penny Lane” with a live trumpet section, experience the beauty of “Yesterday” with an acoustic guitar and string quartet, enjoy the classical/rock blend on “I Am the Walrus,” and relish the cascading orchestral crescendo on “A Day in the Life .” Classical Mystery Tour is the best of the Beatles like you’ve never heard them before .

Many have called it the best show the Beatles never did! For Beatles fans, this is as close as we’ll get to the real thing . Join us for a truly magical (mystery tour) experience .

As we conclude our tribute to Beethoven’s 250th, we laud the genius who set the standard for perfection. We’ll go on a journey with Beethoven the man, the idealist, the revolutionary . Our brilliant principal string players will perform “Grosse Fuge,” one of the most visionary works for string quartet of the 19th century . This work is a daring emotional journey, titanic in scope and relentless in its energy . Pianist Mikael Darmanie will perform the shimmering “’Moonlight’ Sonata,” perhaps Beethoven’s most popular composition for the piano .

The pinnacle of our celebration is, of course, Beethoven’s very best: the towering Ninth Symphony . “Ode to Joy,” the final movement, is many things: a protest anthem, a celebration of music, a call for unity among all humankind . One of the reasons the Ninth is so special is that Beethoven was the first major composer to include the human voice in a symphony . Requiring a brilliant chorus, outstanding soloists, and an enormous (and enormously talented) orchestra, Beethoven’s Ninth is perhaps the greatest triumph of Western classical music, and the perfect, joyful end to our year .
