Can you mix and match tiers? On Combined Science they must all be of the same tier. For Separate Sciences, each Science GCSE has its own entry so for example students could sit Higher Biology and Foundation Chemistry
Which topics are on which papers? Biology 1 – Units 1-4Biology 2 – Units 5-7Chemistry 1 – Units 1-5Chemistry 2 – Units 6-10Physics 1 – Units 1-4Physics 2 – Units 5-8

Resilience• Science exams are hard
• The biggest challenge that students face is having the resilience to keep going
• For example:
-on the Combined Science foundation paper students needed 58% for a 5-5
-on the Combined Science higher paper students needed 29% for a 5-5 and only 64% for a 9-9!
You can help by acknowledging the challenge and encouraging your child to keep trying their best
It's not just about learning facts
• Only a third of the exam is recall of knowledge
• The other two thirds is about application and analysis
• This means that during revision students need to do more than just making notes and remembering facts
Helpful resources
• Students can use Educake to assess and apply their knowledge
• Teachers are setting tests, but students can also create their own
Helpful resources
• S-cool is a free to used website

• There are 21 required practicals for Combined Science and 28 for Separate Science
• They are all available on YouTube
Helpful resources
• This half term Yr11 students have been doing regular tests to help prepare for the PPEs
• They have a topic checklist which they can use to help revise

Careers & Next StepsWhat support have they had so far so far….?•Attendance at whole school careers conventions since Year 7

What's happening next……..
Applying for post 16 options!
What are their Post-16 options?• Sixth Form – Usually offer A levels and BTEC courses
• College – Colleges usually offer A level, BTEC and vocational courses to study e.g. Electrical Engineering or Childcare
• Apprenticeship – Apprenticeships are a way of earning while you learn. You generally spend 4 days a week at work and 1 day at college/training provider to gain the qualification required for their apprenticeship. Further information can be found on Wakefield Council Website and at: https://www.findapprenticeship.service.gov.uk/apprenticeshipsearch
• Education until 18 – All have to be in some form of education or training until they are 18! Eg Sixth Form, College or an Apprenticeship
How to apply for Post 16 options?
• Its no longer completed through UCAS Progress• The new system is called Wakefield Prospectus• It's an online application that they will complete to apply for their Post 16
options. It allows them to complete just one application form but send to severalproviders in the Wakefield district e.g. different colleges etc..
• Providers out of the district – Students have to apply directly, on their websites• All students have been issued with their Logon/Password for the NEW Wakefield
Prospectus• Students have been working on their applications in form time• They need to spend time at home now, if they haven't finished their application
form - Some students have finished it!• Ask your son/daughter about it and please support them with their application
form
Website -https://www.wakefieldprospectus.co.uk/
Things they need to think about when choosing a course/subject and provider?• What interests them about the subject?• Are they good at the subject? • Will they get the entry requirements eg Maths A Level,
they will need a grade 6 or above• Where do they want to study? Sixth Form or a college• What jobs/careers does it lead onto?• Location of Sixth Form or College?• How long will it take to travel to?This also applies if they are thinking about apprenticeships!
Personal StatementThe Personal Statement is the most important part of the application form and the chance for the young person to ‘sell themselves’
They should talk about:
• Hobbies/Interest
• Why they are keen on the subjects/course
• Career intentions – if known
• Skills & Qualities e.g. Good communicator, time keeping
• Any part time jobs e.g. demonstrates commitment
• Any voluntary experience e.g. working for a charity
Help Sheet – To complete the ‘Personal Statement’
The guide has been added to the Ossett Academy
website under the Curriculum tab heading,
then Careers
If they followed the guide step by step and each question is answered this will formulate
the ‘Personal Statement’
Sending/submitting their applicationHints & Tips:
Get them to check the application before sending it e.g. form tutor/parents(You)
• Check for spellings and grammar!
• Details of interviews will be recorded on their Wakefield Prospectusaccount
• Keep logging back in to check the progress of the application on theirWakefield Prospectus account - They will be notified on here if they havebeen offered a place..
