16-Dec Christmas Party and breakup

Ahead of our regular meeting on 30 September, 12 members as part of our membership and branding strategy for 2015/16 were filmed answering all things about Rotary, Yarra Bend and of course importantly, them! With the generous and ‘free’ support of Paul Dabrowski as camera man and the donated use of cameras and lights from Luke Raisbeck of Media Products (www.mediaproducts.com.au) it is great to know another major project for this year has come to fruition. I look forward to sharing the first edit soon and am sure a blooper roll may be floating around in time for the Christmas party!

With October upon us this means our November AGM is getting nearer. I

recommend that all members consider what role/s they would like to play. If you haven’t been on the board before or are an experienced hand that has taken a break why not put your hand up for 2016/17 and join Clint’s team!

For a number of years we have discussed changing our Christmas party format. As part of October 21 forum night I would like to get this important activity on the agenda and discuss a range of ideas that a number of members have floated in the last few weeks. Please bring your ideas too.

The website committee is still seeking some additional members. Technical expertise is not required, the focus of the committee is to consider content

and tone of the site, please let me know if you are willing to lend a hand on this important activity

Yarra Bend continues to enjoy visitors on a weekly basis the last few weeks being no exception. It was great to see our dear friend and district chair of youth, Gabrielle Morgan and fellow West Footscray Rotarian Ian Johnston attend on 30 September. This past week saw 5 members from our sister club Woodend join us for what was a different, fun and energizing meeting. Assistant Governor Gabe also attended - how could anyone stay away from the fun!?!

See you Wednesday.

Justin

Yarra Bend was joined by members from our sister club – Woodend for a greats night’s entertainment this week to play a version of the TV game show based on the BBC’s- ‘Would I Lie to You’.

Hosted by Matt Pollard, a panel of four members – David Shave, Clinton Sceney, John Pocock, and Ken Maher each made a brief statement about

something that occurred in their past lives. The Panel of four were cross-examined by YB and Woodend members to determine the veracity or otherwise of each statement.

• Ken Maher said he was aboard a RAAF aircraft that accidently dropped a pallet of Christmas hams over Amberley Air Force Base.

• David claimed he was a jackeroo that was taught to shear sheep the old way - with hand held shears.

• Clint reckoned that as a transport driver he once had to gift his entire load of tomatoes to avoid a fine for overloading his truck.

• John Pocock claimed he saw a

WOULD I LIETO YOU ?

golfer in South Africa hole two consecutive balls that were then counted as three shots.

At the end of the inquisition from three tables of members each panelist was asked to reveal if he was lying or telling the truth. Of the four statements, most were half-truths, or straight out un-truths.

Host Matt Pollard called for a vote by members on the most convincing panelist. John Pocock was declared as ‘Best Liar’ of the evening.

Five members from our sister club Woodend attended this week’s Yarra Bend meeting.Charles Bender, Dianne Bender, Patricia Leonard, Melissa Hocking, and President Grant Hocking joined us for

dinner and a night’s entertainment. Charles Bender won the nightly draw and collected a bottle of wine.Assistant District Governor, Gabe Hau also attended our meeting as well as guestLibby Mitchell.

A personal perspective of some Yarra Bend Rotarians has been captured on video in a series of interviews conducted by our own Jane Stott.

Twelve members of the Club took part in the video interviews which will be uploaded to the Yarra Bend web site once final production is completed.

Jane is an experienced interviewer which she has honed as a ‘presenter’ on Radio 96.5 FM where she conducts a one hour session called ‘Rotary in Action’.

President, Justin Wibrow said the videos are an ideal way of profiling our members and hearing their views on why they joined the Club

and what they like about Rotary. “The video interviews also provide members with an opportunity to give some background about their own lives outside of Rotary activities and service,” Justin said. “I think the videos will also be of value to people who may be considering joining Rotary and hearing first-hand what our members’ value and gain from being part of the Rotary organisation.”

Rotarian Ken Maher, a member since 1993 said there is no ‘typical type’ Rotarian. “However the one common thing is their desire to give back to the community’, Ken said. “I think our Club is in the best shape it’s ever been. “We’re small, active, and energetic,

and we tend to apply our Club rules more for guidance and not as hard and fast ones”’ he added.

Rotarian John Orr, also did an interview with Jane Stott. One of John’s key roles in Yarra Bend Rotary is his job as the Clubs ‘Protection Officer’. He processes among other things ‘Working with Children’ applications and clearance procedures. It’s an important signal to the community that we are trustworthy, John said. “I also enjoy working with young people in a vocational setting. That includes mentoring and giving them advice and guidance“. John is an avid traveler and outside of his Rotary activities is a volunteer with the

Puffing Billy Preservation Society.

At this week’s meeting, President Justin later thanked Video Producer Paul Dabrowski for his technical work in the filming, editing and post production work for Yarra Bend Rotary.

“Thanks and well done to the 12 members that participated in the video production. Besides a great milestone to achieve I’m sure you will agree we now have some authentic, interactive and malleable content to share as we tell the world the good work and people of Yarra Bend.”

Rotarian Florence Marc-Charles triages a patient at a clinic in Nan Semma, La Gonave, Haiti. The weeklong clinic is supplied and staffed by Rotarians in District 7260 and The Rotary Foundation. In 1917, RI President Arch C. Klumph

proposed that an endowment be set up “for the purpose of doing good in the world.” In 1928, when the endowment fund had grown to more than US$5,000, it was renamed The Rotary Foundation, and it became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property . . . as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.” Two years later, the Foundation made its first grant of $500 to the International Society for Crippled Children. The organization, created by Rotarian Edgar F. “Daddy” Allen, later grew into the Easter Seals.

The Great Depression and World War II both impeded the Foundation’s growth, but the need for lasting world peace generated great postwar interest in its development. After Rotary’s founder, Paul P. Harris, died in 1947, contributions began pouring into Rotary International, and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation.

That year, the first Foundation program – the forerunner of Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarships – was established. In 1965-66, three new programs were launched: Group Study Exchange, Awards for Technical Training, and Grants for Activities in Keeping with the Objective of The Rotary

Foundation, which was later called Matching Grants.

The Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants program was launched in 1978, and Rotary Volunteers was created as a part of that program in 1980. PolioPlus was announced in 1984-85, and the next year brought Rotary Grants for University Teachers. The first peace forums were held in 1987-88, leading to the Foundation's peace and conflict studies programs.

Throughout this time, support of the

Foundation grew tremendously. Since the first donation of $26.50 in 1917, it has received contributions totaling more than $1 billion. More than $70 million was donated in 2003-04 alone. To date, more than one million individuals have been recognized as Paul Harris Fellows – people who have given US$1,000 to the Annual Programs Fund or have had that

amount contributed in their name.

Such strong support, along with Rotarian involvement worldwide, ensures a secure future for The Rotary Foundation as it continues its vital work for international understanding and world peace.

GET TO KNOW THE ROTARY FOUNDATION’S GOALS

1. Eradicate polio, our top priority

2. Build a sense of ownership of our Foundation among Rotarians through their contributions to the Annual Programs Fund, the Permanent Fund, and our Rotary Peace Centres

3. Continue our progress on the Future Vision plan and align our service projects with the six areas of focus:

• Peace and conflict prevention/ resolution

• Disease prevention and treatment

• Water and sanitation

• Maternal and child health

• Basic education and literacy

• Economic and community development

How does Melbourne’s weather compare to Kathmandu? Many people would have a preconceived idea that the Nepal capital is always cold, snowy, and rather bleak in winter.Frequent visitor to Nepal and Yarra Bend Rotarian Isabel Armer said the weather in Kathmandu is actually mild and in some ways comparable to

our climate. While Melbourne tends to have an even spread of rainy days throughout the year, Kathmandu experiences high levels of rain on every day in June and July. When it comes to average monthly temperatures, there is not a great deal of difference between the two places.Isabel said despite common

perceptions, it rarely snows in the city of Kathmandu even though it is surrounded by the highest peaks in the world.

HOW DOES MELBOURNE’S WEATHER COMPARE TO KATHMANDU?

The Rotary Foundation funds international and locally planned Rotary District projects. The Foundations main International projects include polio eradication and promoting peace.

The Foundation is Rotary’s own charity and provides clubs and individual members the opportunity to make a personal contribution. Foundation grants encourage Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact.

Yarra Bend Rotarians, Bob Lambert, Clint Sceney, and Isabel Armer gave members a full briefing about Foundation at this week’s meeting. They explained how Foundation works, participation in Foundation ideas for future projects, and new Australian tax rules for donations.

Bob Lambert said money is collected and held by Foundation for three years and then 50 per cent is distributed back to Club’s via grants for running local and international projects. Participating clubs contribute at least 50 per cent of the funds.
