FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Parent Working Bee and BBQ
Thank you to the many parents and children who helped out at the working bee last Friday, 10th March. It was an extremely productive afternoon and our school grounds now look even more beautiful, thanks to the amazing Yates Avenue community spirit. Well done to everyone for an enormous effort!
Tell Them From Me - Online Student Survey
In the coming weeks, our school will take part in the Tell Them From Me online student survey. This will provide us with valuable feedback on what our students in Years 4-6 think about school life and how engaged they are with school. It will also help us to further improve our student wellbeing, engagement and teaching and learning practices at Yates Avenue Public School.
Behaviour Expectations – Under the COLA
Due to some unsettled behaviour recently, we are currently focusing on explicitly teaching behaviour expectations for when students are gathered under the COLA. Teaching universal expectations for all school settings, then rewarding that behaviour, is an integral part of our proactive approach to student wellbeing. If you have any feedback about our wellbeing procedures, please email me at [email protected].
Follow us on Twitter - @yatesavenuePS
We now have a school Twitter account which will be used to keep you updated on school events and student achievements. This initiative is in response to parent survey feedback last year which indicated the need to further improve communication between home and school. Our Twitter feed is yet another way for parents to stay connected with everything that is happening at our great school.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN assessment program will take place in Week 3, Term 2, for students in Years 3 and 5. The schedule of assessments will be as follows: • Language Conventions & Writing – Tuesday, 9th May • Reading – Wednesday, 10th May • Numeracy – Thursday, 11th May Friday is scheduled as a catch-up day for those students who are absent during the tests. 1/2KL – ‘The Multiplication Masters’ Congratulations to all students in 1/2KL who have been doing fantastic work in mathematics. Yesterday they demonstrated their understanding of multiplication by grouping objects on the floor using hoops and domes – an amazing effort!
Have a great week.

We will conclude our celebrations by creating a ‘supersized’ Harmony Day message we can all be part of – students, staff and families! As orange is the official colour of the day, the students may wear mufti and come dressed in something orange or wear their national costume. We look forward to celebrating the day with you.

PRESCHOOL NEWS On Friday 3rd March we participated in Clean-Up Australia Day. We put our gloves on and began filling the huge white bag! We talked about ways we can all work together to be responsible and help keep our Preschool and school clean and free of rubbish. We also made our own recycle box to collect and recycle paper at Preschool. We recycled a large cardboard box and covered it with recycled magazines and supermarket leaflets. Some of us used our fingers to tear the paper, some used scissors to cut and then we used the glue and glue brushes. When the box is full, we carry it out to the large recycle bin with the yellow lid ready for the recycle truck to collect it. The children are learning there are many things we can recycle and repurpose! Recycling is embedded in our program. Special thanks to the Grout family for donating some of their much loved puzzles and to Robin’s family for donating a plant to grow in our native garden.

Miss K Hoy Rel. Assistant Principal AFL Auskick Program As part of our school sport program, we are lucky to have the AFL Auskick program starting this Friday, 17th March and running for the next four weeks. The program will be for all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 and there will be no cost for the program. I have managed to secure a grant for the program which covers all costs. Also, every child in the school will receive a free footy and some footy cards. In conjunction with the Auskick program, I will also be holding PSSA trials for children in Years 3-6. PSSA is a competition where children are selected for specific sports to represent our school and to compete against others schools in our zone every Friday for Terms 2 and 3. The sports available are Soccer, Netball and AFL.

P&C NEWS It is hard to believe that Term 1 is almost at an end. Do you have even just half an hour that you can spare every now and then to help out in our canteen or uniform shop? We have a small army of regular volunteers but there is always room for more. In the canteen, our busiest times are between 8:30 – 9:00 for taking orders over the counter, and then 10:45 to 11:15 for packing orders. We have two regular volunteers in the Uniform Shop (Lisa & her mum Jo). They do a fantastic job, but could do with some help especially as the weather turns cooler. If you can help out, please pop into the canteen or uniform shop and have a chat to the ladies. Recently our freezer in the canteen wasn’t working properly. We had a technician out who was reasonably priced and very efficient. If you are looking for fridge/ freezer repairs, check out Michael from Frontline Refrigeration Appliance Repairs. Listed below are the detailed descriptions for all roles. If you have any questions, or would like to express an interest in any of these roles please contact me ([email protected] or 0432 689 958).

Uniform Shop Co-ordinator • Seek volunteers for roster• Maintain volunteer roster• Newsletter content for Uniform Shop• Maintain stock levels within pre-determined limits• Request allocations for stock orders• Order placement and verifying stock• Present Report to P&C meetings
In addition to the above committee roles, just as important is the support that we get from the wider school community for our activities and events.
The more hands involved, the lighter the load for all and the more successful the fundraiser.
It is important that all roles are filled in the P&C at this meeting to ensure the effective operation of the committee. Without a functioning P&C and services such as the canteen and uniform shop will be unable to continue, not to mention other important activities the P&C co-ordinate. A sad option that in sure no one would like to see happen.
A number of previous members will not be renewing their roles, myself included, due to personal circumstances and no longer having children in the school.
The next P & C meeting will be 29th March at 6:30pm in the P&C room. If you are unable to make this meeting and would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please email me.
