SUBJECT SPECIFIC REVISION MATERIALS

SAM Learning is advocated for all subjects. SAM Learning can be found at www.samlearning.co.uk A positive relationship has been found between exam results and the use of SAM Learning, with the greatest benefits achieved when students experience ten or more hours each week. The log in details for SAM Learning is: Centre ID: BN16AS User ID: date of birth in 6 figures, followed by 1st and last initial. E.g.

021094CF NB: - Some students will have changed their password and will have forgotten it! If there are any problems, please see the ICT technicians.

Show My Homework:

https://angmering.showmyhomework.co.uk/school/homeworks/calendar. This will open the calendar and show you all the home learning set. To make it easier to see, please use filters on the left hand side to select the correct year group and see all the home learning set by your child’s teachers. Clicking on a task then gives you the resources and details of the task. Alternatively get your child to log in and show you.

TIPS FOR PARENTS

Supporting your child in setting themselves up for revision:

● Talk to your child about how you can support them, and what they would find helpful. ● The simplest things often get in the way of starting revision—weeks can be lost when students

are ‘ going to get some folders soon……’. Get around these by providing the files, dividers etc. ● Encourage your child to empty their bags and file handouts etc. at the end of each day. ● Support your child in choosing one good revision book for each subject– it’s the best investment

you will make. ● Help your child plan a revision timetable. It is the single thing that will make the biggest difference

to the effectiveness of the revision—and therefore the outcome.

Supporting your child in doing the Revision:

● Help them stick to their revision plan, and keep to the start and finish times they have agreed.

Praise them when they do it and if necessary agree a reward structure. ● Quietly top up their equipment with pens, pencils, rulers etc. Try not to get ‘wound up’ about lost

items. ● Provide favourite snacks and water for revision sessions. ● Be sensitive to the pressure your child is feeling—let them know that if they are really not up to it

on an odd day, it isn’t the end of the world. Remind them of all the good work they have done. ● Keep regular ‘check-ins’ and avoid nagging in the meantime. Take an interest in how the revision

is going, talk through any difficulties with them.

MENTAL HEALTH and WELL-BEING

Just as people’s bodies can become unwell, people’s minds can become unwell too. Mental health problems are more common than you might think - three children in every classroom have a mental health problem. With the exams looming, it is important that students, parents and teachers take action to promote well-being.

Sometimes it can feel like we don't have any control over what we think or how we feel. But by making simple changes to our lives, we can make a real difference to our mental health, especially during the exam season. Feeling good is worth investing in - and the best thing is that these simple tips won't cost you much time or money.

The Year 11 Insight module on Mental Health and Well-being will explore these issues; however here are ten top tips for beating anxiety during the exam season:

1. Take some deep breaths any time you feel stressed: Breathe in for 10 seconds and out for 10.

Simple, but surprisingly effective!

2. Get in control: Create a revision timetable and plan what needs to be done.

3. Find a quiet place to revise

4. Don’t stress alone: Talk to friends, parents and teachers if you are worried.

5. Take breaks between revision sessions and socialise

6. Get plenty of exercise to rid yourself of pent up energy

7. Get outside and enjoy some fresh air.

8. Ensure you have a good sleep routine

9. Drink plenty of water and eat well. Cut down on processed foods.

10. Remember! The exam season is just that; it does not last forever.

A helpful website for parents and students which helps with issues around well-being: http://www.youngminds.org.uk/

REVISION Guide for students:

Setting up:

● Buy a set of files– one for each exam you will take. ● File information from lessons into each folder. ● Start EARLY; allow at least two weeks for each exam– this will help ease the stress! - Make a

realistic timetable. ● Get a good revision book/CD ROM or aid for each subject. ● Keep everything you need in one place to avoid wasting time at the beginning of each session.

Doing the revision:

● Go to ALL lessons & make them work for YOU (especially the ones you don’t like, or find hard).

Remember, you are now working for you, not the teacher. ● Use a revision technique that works for you (you will learn more about these on our Study Skills

Day).

Page 13: YEAR 11 - Angmering School · AQA Engineer GCSE/Oxford Press/ISBN 978-1-4085 – 0412-3 English ... Revision guide suggested is GCSE Geography OCR B Specification. ISBN number: 978-1-847-62373-7

● Get hold of past papers from your teachers and the internet. ● Have clear and specific goals for each revision session. ● Have a start and finish time, and stick to them. ● Get into a routine of following your plan. If you really don’t feel like it, do it for 15mins and then

decide whether to carry on (15 mins is better than nothing). ● Ignore the urge to tidy your room for the first time in years. ● Clear your head before you begin. Give yourself 2 mins to write down what is on your mind and

tell yourself to deal with it later. ● Stop and take a break if you become angry or overwhelmed. Try to talk to someone about what is

bothering you. ● Don’t waste time struggling– note down what you find hard or don’t understand, and speak to the

teacher about it next lesson. ● If there are two things you don’t ‘get’ leave them out (unless you are aiming for an A* ) ● Break down each topic into ‘do-able’ chunks

● Tick off each area when you have done it. ● Revisit your notes after one day, week and month. THIS REALLY WORKS. ● Don’t be influenced by friends who say they aren’t doing much work. Your

results don’t matter to them, but they are vital for you. ● Don’t forget it’s not forever– think of the Summer Holiday.

Last Minute Revision:

● It is worth it! By the day before your exam, your revision notes should be short enough to read through in one session. This will help key concepts stick in your mind.

QUICK TIPS FOR REVISING:

● Make yourself start however much you don’t want to—the hardest bit is over then. ● Build in short breaks. ● Do frequent short exercises—stretches, walking around etc. ● Drink water and get fresh air. Keep the temperature cool. ● Eat ‘brain food’, avoid sugar and have lots of healthy snacks. ● Take a day off and do something completely different. ● Do something relaxing before revision and bedtime. Promise yourself little rewards after each

session. ● At the end of each session, file away your notes and clutter so that your work area is clear, and

ready for the next session.

SITTING THE EXAMS

Key tasks for students

Before the exam:

Know your exam timetable.

● Know when and where you need to be each day—leave early. ● Allow time for your brain to wake up—have a shower and breakfast ( or take a banana or cereal

bar with you) ● Make sure you have everything you need, including pens you enjoy writing with. ● Visit the toilet before the exam begins. ● Take water into the exam and sip it throughout—your retention and concentration will be 70%

better if you are hydrated. ● Don’t worry if you can’t remember anything at all before the exam—if you have revised, the

information WILL be there.

During the exam:

● Remember that nervousness is normal and gives the brain extra adrenalin which will help you

make the final effort. ● Take a couple of deep breaths. ● If your mind goes blank—don’t panic. There will be some of the paper you can do. Read it slowly

and calmly. ● Remind yourself of the exam structure. Read the instructions and don’t pick up your pen until you

have done this. ● Keep to a timescale for each question based on the number of marks given... ● Where there are several questions to answer, tackle those you are most confident about first. ● Always check through your work at the end. Examiners have said it is possible to increase your

score by one grade by doing this.

Page 16: YEAR 11 - Angmering School · AQA Engineer GCSE/Oxford Press/ISBN 978-1-4085 – 0412-3 English ... Revision guide suggested is GCSE Geography OCR B Specification. ISBN number: 978-1-847-62373-7

TOP TIPS ON EXAM STRATEGY Success in exams involves two ingredients - having a thorough knowledge of the subject matter AND making the most of your knowledge in the exam through effective answering technique.

Here are four golden rules to apply to all your GCSE papers:

1. Allow time to read the paper carefully The importance of reading the paper carefully and choosing your questions wisely cannot be said enough at this stage. Take your time. Be smart and size-up the paper before answering.

2. Stick to your game plan An overall strategy should have emerged from your revision and exam preparation in each subject. In some cases, this plan will work like a dream but there will always be surprises to deal with in some papers. Don't get flustered. Stick to your game plan, trust your judgement, and move on.

3. Sweep up any mistakes In the pressure of the exam hall, it is easy to make errors. Misreading the instruction on a question can make an entire answer invalid. A simple miscalculation can lose you valuable time. Always leave a few minutes at the end to tidy-up errors. Simply changing a definition / formula / calculation at this stage could be the difference between a good and an average grade.

4. Attempt all questions You can always polish an answer further but, if there is no attempt made at part of a question, the examiner can't give you any marks. BUT if the instructions on the front of the paper tell you to answer a certain number of questions – stick to this!!

ANSWERING EXAM QUESTIONS

1. Scan all the questions. 2. Mark all the questions you could answer. 3. Read these questions carefully. 4. Choose the correct number of questions in each section. 5. Decide on an order: best answers first. 6. Divide up your time, allowing more time for the questions with the most marks. 7. Underline the key words in the question. 8. Plan your answer. 9. Stick to the point of the question. 10. Write your answer. 11. Use the plan at every stage – e.g. every paragraph. 12. Check your answer against the plan. Look out for mistakes. 13. If you have time, re-read the questions and your answers and make any

necessary corrections.
