Year 2 – Home Learning Ideas week beginning 21st June Have a go at some of these ideas – try your best and ask someone at home to help you if you get stuck. There are lots of ideas here, please do not feel like you must complete everything. Find something that you are interested in and focus on that. Try and do one activity from the English and Maths section each day and then choose another from the rest but please don’t worry if this isn’t always possible. If you find it tricky don’t worry, just leave that activity and move onto something else . ENGLISH: This story that we are going to focus some of our activities on this week is ‘Zog’ by Julia Donaldson. You will find some other activities linked to this in some of the other subject areas. We have attached 2 videos again – one is of the story being read so that you can see the text. With this video you could try and mute the person reading the story so that you can read it yourself. The second video is the BBC adaptation of the story which is on BBC iPlayer. Have a go at some of the activities below (you don’t need to do them all!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZqFqI0MAfU https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0bwdw8y/zog Activity 1: What skills must Zog learn at dragon school? Write a list of these skills under the title How to become a dragon. Can you think of any other skills that aren’t in the book but that you think would be useful for a dragon to learn? Activity 2: In the story, the princess dreams of being something else when she grows up. Can you write a dream for yourself for when you grow up? What do you want to be and why? Activity 3: Imagine you were flying on the back of Zog. What would you see whilst you were up in the air, and where would you choose to go? Activity 4: Imagine you have arrived at your chosen destination after Zog has flown you there. Can you write a postcard from that place to the people back at home? Remember to tell them about your adventure and what it’s like where you are. Activity 5: Zog’s ‘super power’ is being able to fly. If you could have a super power, what would it be and why?

Pobble 365 This week’s picture is called ‘Lost Flock’ and is all about a sheep called Fluffy. Fluffy has been eating the grass in the field when she begins to float up into the sky! I wonder where she’s going to go? There are some questions to answer, a picture challenge and a story starter for you to have a go at.

Phonics/Spellings This week’s spelling rule is looking at question words as well as 3 spellings for different types of word. You could practise using the question words to write your own questions about a topic of your choice. Then, practise spelling the other words. Remember: An adjective is a word that describes a noun e.g. the red balloon. A verb is a doing word e.g. the girl jumped. An adverb is a word that describes a verb e.g. the girl jumped excitedly. Try and write the words in different ways to help you remember them. You could try and write them in big letters, using colours, bubble writing etc.

MATHS MyMaths activities set –

Describing Shapes 2D and 3D shapes

This week we are also going to carry on using Oak National Academy and some ideas from White Rose Maths to learn about shape (this links to the work you are doing on MyMaths too). Have a go at the activities, try and do them in the right order. We have put the link to the Oak National Academy for each lesson and also some ideas for other things that you could do below. Session 1 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-identify-shapes-by-the-number-of-sides-and-vertices/activities/2 In this session you will be identifying shapes by the number of sides and vertices. There is then a guessing game where you have to guess which shape is being described.

These are the clues that you will be using to guess the shapes. EXTRA CHALLENGE: Have a go at writing your own clues for someone in your house to guess your shape. You could even send your clues to us and we will see if we can guess your shape!

MATHS GAME - https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/shiftingShapes/index.html In this game you have to guess what the shape is by revealing different parts of it with a moveable torch! Session 2 – https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-recognise-lines-of-symmetry-within-2-d-shapes/activities/2 Today you are going to be looking at lines of symmetry in 2D shapes. Watch the video to help you to understand this – you will need some paper to help you. There are some extra challenges on symmetry to have a go at below:

Session 3 – https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-name-and-describe-3-d-shapes/activities/3 In this session you will be learning to name and describe 3D shapes. We did ask you look at 3D shapes a few weeks ago so this will be a good recap lesson! There is then another ‘guess my shape’ challenge to have a go at.

Like in session 1, have a go at making up your own clues and asking someone to guess your shape.

Session 4 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-identify-2-d-shapes-on-the-surfaces-of-3-d-shapes/activities/2 Today you’re going to be looking at the 2D shapes that can be seen on the surfaces of 3D shapes. In the video there are some matching tasks to do.

Session 5 – https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-compare-and-sort-2-d-and-3-d-shapes/activities/2 In this lesson you will be comparing and sorting 2D and 3D shapes. This lesson is a bit more of a challenge but we know you’ll all be fantastic at it. If you find it tricky or just want some extra work to do, have a go at the challenges below.

Big Maths This week you have another CLIC challenge to do. Science When you started in Year 2 we learnt that there are 7 life processes that all living things have to do. Watch this short video to remind you of this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zg7s39q. To help us remember the 7 life processes we can use the name ‘Mrs Gren’. Each letter of the name stands for one of the 7 life processes. See here Here is a story that you might want to read about the life processes: http://www.cheekymonkeyresources.co.uk/mrsgren20.

CHALLENGE:

Choose one living thing and make a poster to show how you know that it is alive. Make sure you remember all of the 7 life processes!

Topic based ideas: Geography – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zfcbrj6 We are going to carry on learning about another continent this week – Asia, with a focus on China and the city of Shanghai. Use the link above to watch some videos and find out lots of facts about this country. This week try and find a different way to present your findings from what you did last week. You could:

Make a poster with facts and pictures. Write a more detailed fact sheet. Make a leaflet for someone wanting to come and visit Shanghai. Tell someone about the facts that you have found.

PSHCE/Wellbeing – Roll a Rainbow Activity:

Computing (E-safety) –

This week we have uploaded 2 more home learning sessions from https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/. These sessions are aimed at keeping children safe online, particularly during this time when they are spending more time at home. It is a good idea to work through these sessions with your child so that you can answer any questions that they might have. https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/globalassets/thinkuknow/documents/thinkuknow/parents/pdf/thinkuknow-5-7s-home-activity-sheet-4.pdf https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/globalassets/thinkuknow/documents/thinkuknow/parents/pdf/thinkuknow-5-7s-home-activity-sheet-5.pdf Art (linked to Zog) –

Look at the dragons that are in the story Zog. Have a go at creating your own dragon (there are some more ideas here too). What are you going to use to create your dragon? You could use colouring pencils, felt tips, paint or you could even make your dragon out of junk materials. What are you going to name your dragon? Is your dragon going to have any special powers?

The children can use their homework books for any of these tasks – they are welcome to copy out questions or just number them. This could also be a discussion. Keep working on the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception words and high frequency words as well.
