Year 2 Home Learning Week 2 beg: 11.1.21 Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to those of you who are joining us for the first time this week. You have all made a great start with the home learning tasks we set last week. We are really proud of all the hard work and enthusiasm you have shown already. This week we will launch our new whole school topic based on the book “Journey” by Aaron Becker. Journey is a wordless picture book and, as mentioned in the Friday newsletter, the benefits of engaging with wordless picture books are huge! You will see lots of activities related to this book over the next few weeks. Before we go any further, we would like to take a moment to remind you to be kind to yourself. Do take breaks and enjoy the time you have together. Try and keep weekends free for family time. Keep referring back to the wellbeing chart for January (posted on Tapestry) that offers simple and effective ideas to support your wellbeing. Tapestry will continue to be our main line of communication for our daily home learning tasks. Below you will find this week’s daily plans outlining the activities we would like you to complete each day. We will continue to upload the accompanying teaching videos and resources each day on Tapestry. For some tasks, we may direct you to useful websites as well as Espresso and Purple Mash (logins can be found in the front cover of home learning books). Just a brief note about reading comprehensions. We will be uploading up to 3 comprehensions this week with an accompanying teaching video where we can for children. Each time we upload, we will include 2 different texts for the children to read aimed at their reading levels. Please just choose one for your child to complete, either a Phase 3 / 4 or Phase 5 for more confident readers. After completing the daily tasks please upload pictures/videos of activities you have completed at least 2 to 3 times a week. We will aim to comment on posts swiftly, but, please be aware that members of staff will also be working in school with key worker children and may not be able to respond immediately. Please also remember to date your posts and upload them together in the same post, if possible. Thank you! With best wishes, Year Two Team

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back to those of you who are joining us for the first time this week. You have all made a great

start with the home learning tasks we set last week. We are really proud of all the hard work and

enthusiasm you have shown already.

This week we will launch our new whole school topic based on the book “Journey” by Aaron Becker.

Journey is a wordless picture book and, as mentioned in the Friday newsletter, the benefits of engaging

with wordless picture books are huge! You will see lots of activities related to this book over the next few

weeks.

Before we go any further, we would like to take a moment to remind you to be kind to yourself. Do take

breaks and enjoy the time you have together. Try and keep weekends free for family time. Keep referring

back to the wellbeing chart for January (posted on Tapestry) that offers simple and effective ideas to

support your wellbeing.

Tapestry will continue to be our main line of communication for our daily home learning tasks. Below you will

find this week’s daily plans outlining the activities we would like you to complete each day. We will continue

to upload the accompanying teaching videos and resources each day on Tapestry. For some tasks, we may

direct you to useful websites as well as Espresso and Purple Mash (logins can be found in the front cover of

home learning books).

Just a brief note about reading comprehensions. We will be uploading up to 3 comprehensions this week

with an accompanying teaching video where we can for children. Each time we upload, we will include 2

different texts for the children to read aimed at their reading levels. Please just choose one for your child

to complete, either a Phase 3 / 4 or Phase 5 for more confident readers.

After completing the daily tasks please upload pictures/videos of activities you have completed at least 2

to 3 times a week. We will aim to comment on posts swiftly, but, please be aware that members of staff

will also be working in school with key worker children and may not be able to respond immediately. Please

also remember to date your posts and upload them together in the same post, if possible. Thank you!

With best wishes,

Questions about a Picture

I can ask and record questions about a story using what I know.

I can use question marks correctly.

Use the teaching video provided for this task. Ask the children to look carefully at the scenes. Do you

have any questions about what is happening? Role model recording a question "Why doesn't the girl

play with her scooter?" "What is the girl thinking about?" "Has someone upset her?"

Task: Record at least 4-5 questions about the scenes from the story. You can list your questions using

bullet points. You also need to remember to:

● Write the title and date at the top of your page.

● Use capital letters to start your sentence,

● Use a question mark at the end.

● read back your writing to check it makes sense

LO: I can describe the properties of everyday materials.

We have been exploring the materials that different objects are made from and thinking about the

properties of the material. Properties are the words which describe how materials look as well as how

they feel.

Activity 1: Odd one out Unusual houses. We have enjoyed this type of activity before, there is no

right or wrong answer, it is an activity to encourage discussion and observation! Look at the 3 pictures

of unusual houses and record the things that are similar and different. Link your ideas to materials and

properties, and perhaps how they have been built. Look at the example below and record your activity in

your home learning book. How many can you think of? You can take a closer look at this image using the

Odd One Out attachment in Tapestry.

If you want to learn more about different properties, share the powerpoint Translucent, transparent

and opaque attached in Tapestry.

You might want to use these properties in activity 2.

Activity 2: Testing properties in your home. Find up to 4 or 6 different objects and record them in a

chart in your home learning book like the example below. Practice describing how the materials feel and

what they look like. Feel free to choose your own properties to test. Challenge: what can you find out

from the data (information) you collected? For example, is all metal hard? Is all wood rough?

Computing: E-safety

When we go on the internet, we access the world wide web (www) which is used by people all

around the world in different continents and countries. It is important that we know how to keep

safe online, so over the next few weeks we will be learning about internet safety. This week we will

think about what to do if you come across something “weird” online..

Child Focus-E-safety https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5kW4pI_VQw

Activity: After watching the video, discuss the following questions:

● Do you think the little girl’s parents knew she was going online? How do you know?

● Do you think the little girl should have clicked the “Win Teddy Bear” button? Why?

● How do you think the little girl felt when more messages started popping up on her screen?

Luckily her dad was able to help her sort out the problem and when she came across the same

message again, she called her dad to help. If you came across something online that makes you feel

uncomfortable or worried, who would you ask for help.? Repeat the sentence below out loud to make

a pledge (promise): “If I feel uncomfortable or worried about something I see online I will ask my

The Girl’s Feelings (part 1)

I can use adjectives to describe a character's feelings

Use the teaching video to help you with this task, but you may want to start off by recapping the story

“Journey by watching it on youtube. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRsmuveKWuk

Today we will explore how the girl’s feelings change at the beginning of the story. Look at the pictures,

can you think of adjectives to describe how she is feeling. Discuss these with your grown-up or partner.

Let’s see if we can find some more interesting adjectives to describe her feelings, by using a thesaurus.

In a thesaurus you can find words that mean the same thing.

● Click below on the Collins link: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english-thesaurus

● Then type in your word (i.e sad) in the search bar

● Scroll down to see a list of synonyms (similar meaning words) Do you recognise any of these

words?

Task: List at least 6-8 adjectives for each picture in your books using a thesaurus. Remember to write the title and short date at the top of your page and use your best handwriting.

The Girl’s Feelings (part 2)

I can use adjectives to describe a character's feelings

I can write sentences to explain why they felt that way.

Recap yesterday’s lesson and look back at your list of interesting adjectives.

Today we are going to choose some of your new adjectives to write a sentence about why the girl

was feeling that way. Start off with what she was doing, then how she felt finally explain why. Make

sure you write a sentence for each picture.

For example: Sitting at home in her bedroom, the girl felt glum and upset because she didn’t

have anything to do. Remember to write the title and short date at the top of your page and use

PSHE: Keeping Safe

I know how rules and restrictions keep me safe at home

I know how to get help in an emergency

Mostly, our homes are safe places. However, there are some objects that can be dangerous and can

cause injuries around the home. We need to be aware of the dangers and how to keep ourselves

safe.

Have a look at these pictures of household objects. Think about

/ discuss why these objects might be dangerous.

Danger of electrical appliances

All of these objects are electrical appliances, which means they

are powered with electricity (through a wire and a plug). Electricity is very

powerful and it can be dangerous. Not being careful around electricity could

cause an electric shock - this is when electricity enters the body and makes a

person very ill. If electrical items are damaged, fires can start. If you find a

fire, there are some things you can do to stay safe.

1) If your clothing catches fire - stop, drop and roll.

2) Stay low to the floor - get down on all fours and crawl to the nearest exit

3) Move away from the fire - get out of a room or building where there is a fire and stay out.

4) Call 999 and ask for the fire service.

Activity 1: Complete the ‘spot the hazard’ worksheets

Page 9: Year 2 Home Learning Week 2 beg: 11.1

Dangerous products

In the bathroom and the kitchen there are household products that can be dangerous. Many liquids

are poisonous and must never be drunk. We need to remember that these are for adults to use.

In the kitchen, there might be drinks that are not suitable for children. Alcohol is only for grown-

ups to drink. It will make a child ill if they drink it.

Medicines are for drinking but only when a grown-up can help and can make sure we are having the

right medicine and the right amount. Many medicines should not be given at all to children under 16

and lots of medicines have different doses for different ages. This is why it is important that

grown-ups give medicine to children.
