Spelling Bee’s Dictation

Use this booklet to see your progress as you practise the target spellings.

Parent Note: Please use the following spelling dictation to help your child spell adverbs by adding -ly to root words that end in -le. Your child will need to learn that the final ‘le’ changes to the suffix -ly when making these words into adverbs. Complete the first dictation before practising any of the target spelling words from the spelling list and write down the score. Then, after practising the target words, complete the second dictation. You should then see progress between the first and second dictation. Only complete the second dictation when you feel your child has practised the spellings enough – usually a week.

For ideas on practising spellings, see the Spelling Support for Parents: Games to Play at Home Guide.

WorksheetRead the following passage to your child, repeating the target word two times. Allow your child time to complete the gaps with the spelling word.

The Archbishop gently placed the crown on the new king’s head as he comfortably sat on his

throne. The king looked at all the people as they humbly bowed towards him. Next, the king nobly arose and looked at all the people in the cathedral. He felt terribly nervous but knew he needed to

be incredibly brave and confident as he was now their ruler. This was possibly the most important

day of his life but he felt horribly anxious. What if he wasn’t good enough? What if he didn’t know

what to do? He took a deep breath. He simply had to say the oath before he was anointed with holy

oil and then he could relax a little. He knew that there would probably be millions of people watching

throughout the world.

guster the dragon lay in the mouth of his cave he itched his back itched and his belly itched his fingers and his toes itched even his eyes and ears and nose itched it was unbearable

guster felt like this every autumn while the leaves on the trees flushed into their autumn finery, guster’s green summer scales slowly changed to copper this was a mountain dragon trick which kept them safe from human eyes humans couldn’t spot green scales against the grass, red scales against autumn leaves or white scales against snow guster thought that humans must be very stupid

guster rolled on the rocky ground he scratched his back and scraped his shoulders his head wriggled and his legs flailed it did no good if only there were some way to soothe his scaly skin

guster twisted to his feet “ma?” he yelled into the darkness “i’m going swimming”

All About LeopardsLeopards are part of the same family as domestic cats and share many similar features. For example, all cats are mammals and carnivores. Leopards, however, belong to a group known as ‘big cats’. Big cats, such as leopards, tigers, lions, jaguars and cheetahs, are different from domestic cats because they are able to roar.

HabitatLeopards have adapted to many different habitats and therefore they can be found in many different parts of the world. Some live in rainforests, some mountains and some live in swamps! Sadly, however, most types of leopard are endangered in the wild. The most endangered is the Amur leopard of Russia; it is estimated that there are onlyabout70adultsalivetoday.

All About LeopardsDietBeing nocturnal, leopards’ bodies are perfectly adapted to night-time hunting. They have a keen sense of hearing, excellent vision and their sensitive whiskers detect even tiny movements.

Leopards are skilled climbers and often pounce on their prey from the trees up above. Incredibly, they are strong enough to drag it back up into the branches!

Although leopards mainly hunt large mammals such as deer, they are different from other big cats because they will eat fish, birds, monkeys or even dung beetles if food is hard to find!

Page2of2

Tenzing NorgayBorn: 15th May 1914

Career: One of the first climbers to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

Personal LifeTenzing Norgay, originally called Namgyal Wangdi, was born in Kharta Valley, Nepal. He was the 11th of 13 children but sadly, many of his siblings died at a very young age. The exact details of his childhood are unknown although as a teenager, he ran away from his life in Khumba near Mount Everest to Darjeeling, West Bengal in India. At the age of 19, Norgay got married but his wife later died and so Norgay went on to marry two more times.

As a young man, Norgay worked as a porter (someone who carries objects and cargo up a mountain) and accompanied several climbs of Mount Everest. He was finally successful in reaching the summit when he joined Edmund Hillary and the British expedition in February 1953. Norgay and Hillary were in one of the remaining two teams at the final part of the ascent and arrived at the summit at 11.30am on 29th May.

Once at the top, Norgay spent a short time taking photographs and eating mint cake before commencing his descent down the mountain. Norgay never knew the exact date of his birthday and so chose this significant day as his official birth date.

Interesting FactsTime Magazine named Norgay as one of the most influential people of the 20th Century.

Norgay was a practicing Buddhist and as a result of his religion, left an offering of food at the summit of Mount Everest.

Tenzing Norgay means ‘wealthy-fortunate-follower-of-religion.’

In 1978, Norgay started ‘Tenzing Norgay Adventures’; a company providing trekking adventures in the Himalayas.

Norgay’s son, Jamling Tenzing Norgay, also reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1996.

Norgay died at the age of 71 on 9th

May 1986 from a bleed on the brain.
