Literacy- creative writing:

Aim to spend 30 minutes on this each day.

Monday

Your task this week is to make up a fairy tale that

explains this picture.

First of all, you need to have a think about the

features of a fairy tale:

Set in the past

Starts with ‘Once upon a time…’

Fantasy or make-believe elements.

Enchanted setting - can include forests,

castles, water or kingdoms.

Good and evil characters.

They have a happy ending.

Can you create a plan for you story? Use the sentence openers to help you:

Once upon a time…

One day…

Unfortunately…

Luckily…

Finally…

Now create a list of some vocabulary you could use to describe the old lady,

the children, the sack. Can you think of any wow words to use?

Finally, try to think of 3 good openers for each section of your story.

Tuesday L.O: To write the opening to a story.

Remind yourself of your plan from yesterday.

A good opening introduces the setting and the main

characters. Where are the children to start with?

Can you pick out one child as a main character?

Write the opening to your story- remember to start with ‘Once upon a

time…’

Wednesday L.O: To write the build up to a story.

Read through you work from yesterday- as you read,

check for sense, basic punctuation and spelling

mistakes.

Now you are ready to write the build up- where the

characters and settings are explored further.

Write the build up to your story but remember not to share the problem

yet!

Try to use lots of description- adjectives, adverbs and wow words.

See the adjective table below for some inspiration!

Thursday L.O: To write the dilemma to a story.

Read through you work from yesterday- as you read,

check for sense, basic punctuation and spelling

mistakes.

Now you are ready to write the dilemma where the

characters encounter a problem. What is your

problem?

Write the dilemma to your story…at the end of today’s writing, your reader

should be left wondering if the characters will be ok- leave them on a

cliffhanger!

Challenge yourself today to create some suspense in your story- use short

sentences balanced with longer ones.

Friday L.O: To write the resolution and ending to a story.

Read through you work from yesterday- as you read,

check for sense, basic punctuation and spelling

mistakes.

Now you are ready to write the resolution and ending.

The resolution should solve the problem from

yesterday and the ending needs to be happy (as this

is a feature of fairytales).

Write the resolution to your story, making sure the character’s problem is

resolved. Once you have done this, write the ending, which is usually short

and sweet.

Finished? Now read back through your whole story and make any changes

you think are needed. This could include:
