We lived in the next village. Parents wanted English education. My sisters and I were day-girls. Any teachers you can remember? In juniors: Miss Emery. Ms. Blacklock, Ms. Ashley, Ms, Hodges, Hodgson, Webb, Vicario, Brindle, M. Parisod and the ski teachers! Positions of responsibility held Rang the bell! Ski captain. Highlight your best and worst memories Going to Miss Blacklock about food: worms in the raspberries! Being outsider as day-girl, although we were attached to Chamby House, which was fun. I loved Biology with Ms. Hodgson. I was very keen on skiing: Interpensionat races. Who have you kept in touch with? Sandra Diane Johnson Name Now Sandra Diane Buckner Date of Birth 10 December 1939 Dates at School 1947 to 1956 Life at Châtelard Where was the school located? Les Avants Why were you sent to Châtelard? Health – recurring pneumonia - and was able to do so in 1947 with the Government’s Health Foreign Exchange Allowance. A cousin had been a pupil at Châtelard at Aberdovey which was how my parents knew of the school. Any teachers you can remember? Miss Pike, S. Martin, M. Tomkinson, A. Patrick, D. Godfrey, P. Parisod, Miss Wooldridge, Fraulein Gottstein, Miss Hibberd. Miss Michelle. Positions of responsibility held Form captain and captain of “William Tell” House. Sports performance mediocre. Highlight your best and worst memories Forced to eat porridge and would still be sitting over it when everyone filed into the hall for morning prayers. Watching lightening over the mountains while sitting on the balconies during summer storms. On the whole happy at Châtelard and occasionally home-sick. Four of us in my first class aged seven (in 1947), would have liked to stay for Sixth Form but was not to be. Left after Cert (1956) Who have you kept in touch with? Elizabeth Enfiezioglou, Mary Matson, Sue Burton, Sandra Ryall. Life after Châtelard Education after Châtelard St. James’s Secretarial College, London worked in London in medical research then travelled in the Americas for six years. Career PA at the UK Mission to the UN, Travel, Marriage, PA to Prof. at Imperial College. Co-Director of our Bahamas development “Sandyport” - President & Council Member of the Bahamas National Trust, Herpetologist. Home Life Married in London in 1967 and lived there for ten years – son & daughter – moved to Bahamas 1977 – family now including two grandsons and two granddaughters all in Nassau, The Bahamas where we also have a development called “Sandyport” What are you doing now? Spent 12 years as Chairman of the Bahamas National Trust’s Wildlife Committee and President of the Trust for two years. I am a herpetologist studying the reptiles & amphibians of the Bahamas and a member of two of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature’s SSC Specialists Groups. Conduct field research and research into the history of herpetology in the Bahamas Archipelago and attend international symposia and publish research with colleagues. I have a wonderful time with my grandchildren and continue to travel widely with my husband Hugh.

What are you doing now? Now both retired we spend the year visiting our homes in France and South Africa and skiing in Austria. I was involved in a horrendous car accident in France in 2002 and suffered a brain injury. This has affected my capabilities and personality but I am still able to enjoy life and value friendships.

Highlight your best and worst memories Worst memory was the food (including the living "protein" as Ms Ashley put it) in the salad and the fact that we did not have fresh vegetables, just canned! I most enjoyed everything SKIING … afternoon skiing on the Les Avants slope, Saturday ski excursions, and best of all … ski racing and being chosen to represent Chatelard as a member of the Interpensionnats de Ski Team. Parents on a 1 year trip from Australia through Europe. As I hated doing my correspondence schoolwork I was sent to Chatelard for the year. Any teachers you can remember? None, only the headmistress Miss Braginton. Positions of responsibility held None. Highlight your best and worst memories All good memories of wonderful friends made and a great time. Who have you kept in touch with? Bridget Newell. Life after Châtelard Education after Châtelard Boarding school in Australia then Sydney University (BA). Career Gem dealer in Australia and then Antiques dealer in the UK. Home Life Living in Scotland with husband. Three children spread around the world. What are you doing now? Clare Lacy Name Now Clare Findlay Date of Birth 6 January 1942 Dates at School 1958 to 1960 Life at Châtelard Where was the school located? Les Avants Why were you sent to Châtelard? My father thought that a change would be good, to do A levels, as I had been at my previous school, a convent, for 7 years. Also my brother was attending Aiglon College, in Villars, not far away. Any teachers you can remember? Miss Spyers taught me Grade 8 piano. Mademoiselle Zoss, French. Miss Braginton was there in the early part of my time, and Mademoisell Gottstein, deputy Headmistress, acting Headmistress after Miss Braginton died. Miss Sewell and Monsieur Parisod coached me with tennis. Positions of responsibility held I was made Head of House 3 – also Captain of tennis team in 1960. Highlight your best and worst memories Best: winning the all girls’ schools singles Swiss championship and winning the House one-act Play competition, with my own adaptation of The Scarlet Pimpernel. Meeting so many really lovely new people. Scent of Narcissi in spring, sound of the cowbells clanging on the hillside, when they were let out in the spring. Squidges! Yum. I do not have a single bad memory – sorry!. Who have you kept in touch with? Penny Chamberlain who married a vicar called Bill Penney, now lost touch. Angela Pyper (now Crockatt), Rose Johnson (now Morgan) for a while. Life after Châtelard Education after Châtelard Secretarial course at Queen’s Secretarial college in South Kensington. Career Mostly full-time wife/mother. Also my husband stood for Parliament in 1997 – not a good year to be a Conservative candidate in Scotland – but he got the best result in Scotland. Home Life Married in 1965 - 2 children. Divorced. Married in 1976 Andrew Findlay – another child, John. Moved to Scotland for 22 years in 1985. 1992, volunteered to foster a Bosnian child from war zone, for 3 months. Ended up with 21 of them and 4 mothers. Now writing down a memoire of the time. Fairly hilarious, as those who know me might imagine! Moved to Devon 5 years ago. All children, plus grandchildren, also in Devon, not far away. Busy gardening. A great deal of telephoning around to try and contact OTHER old Chatelardians!! At 70, my life is full and happy, and 35 years of happy marriage has quite restored my faith in that area.

In my view, a school where I could be boarded during the shorter school holidays. My parents also considered I had been in one place, during the war, too long. They were mainly abroad. Any teachers you can remember? Miss Braginton of course, with her innumerable green suits and long pointed brown shoes. Mis Maclaren, always flustered. Mis Farihurst, History. Fraulien G. Miss Stanham, killed in a climbing accident. Positions of responsibility held None Highlight your best and worst memories I have a diary for 1947, not complete of course. Life is all skiing, skating and excursions. All our money, which was in very short supply, went on cakes and chocolate. I spent Christmas and Easter holidays in Les Avants with several others. I do mention Confirmation by the Bishop of Fulham and Europe, May 11 1947, this was followed by a special supper with Brag “very amusing”. Also, on the eve of a skiing excursion to Saanemoser and Gstaad, M Parisod’s mother died (1 Feb 1947) expedition cancelled. Who have you kept in touch with? Fiona Leckie Name Now Fiona Eberts Date of Birth 30 October 1946 Dates at School 1959 to 1963 Life at Châtelard Where was the school located? Les Avants Why were you sent to Châtelard? My parents lived in the Far East (Hong Kong). We were all sent to boarding schools in Europe or UK. They wanted me to learn languages. Only French available at Chatelard until I pushed to be able to do Spanish in my last year – took it for ‘O’ level – but wanted to do Italian as well. Any teachers you can remember? Miss Stevenson, Mlle. Sage, Positions of responsibility held Prefect – but can’t remember what year/term Highlight your best and worst memories Chatelard was not a happy experience for me – level of teaching was less than excellent I found. I had never before attended an all girls school – had been to mixed day schools (Manila, Hong Kong). I wasn’t prepared for being with girls 24/7 in a confined environment. Best moments were through sports – netball, skiing, rounders. Who have you kept in touch with? Candy Ormerod – who lives in Australia and Linda Mollet - but mostly through correspondence. Life after Châtelard Education after Châtelard None. University wasn’t an option and it would have meant two more years either at Chatelard, virtually the only girl in the 6th form (like Imogen Baden-Powell and Brenda Gubbins) or doing ‘A’ levels in Hong Kong where I went when I left school. My father enrolled me in secretarial school right away, I earned enough money to leave HK, went to the UK 18 to share a flat with friends and work. Career Free lance journalist for 6 years (mostly for Daily Telegraph and other publications) Home Life At 21, I married a Canadian (John (‘Jake’) Eberts in 1968. Lived in New York for 3 years, then moved to London where we had 3 children Alexander 39, David 37 and Lindsay (girl) 33. In 1991 moved to Paris where I still live, moving back to Canada (Montreal) permanently this autumn. What are you doing now? Involved in womens’ empowerment in Africa for the last 12 years. Chair of Camfed Int. for 5 years. Started an NGO in the far north of Ghana growing Moringa Oleifera (aka the “Miracle Tree”) a medicinal, protein/vitamin/mineral rich leafy green plant to improve village nutrition. Have been interested in all forms of alternative and complementary medicine, particularly plant medicine for over 30 years.

Positions of responsibility held Highlight your best and worst memories The entire Swiss/European experience was memorable having come from an island life – mountains, lakes, snow falling(for the first time), Montreux, Vevey, Lausanne and the independence of being able to visit them. Disappointment is my worst memory, that of the 4 A-levels I wanted to take they only allowed me to begin the course for two as the other classes were full...this was the reason I left after only a year. Kim Lygo (Penelope officially but most likely to be remembered as Kim) Name Now Kim Lygo Date of Birth 26 January 1964 Dates at School 1973 to 1974 Life at Châtelard Where was the school located? Les Avants Why were you sent to Châtelard? Lived in Hong Kong and parents thought the education would be better. Any teachers you can remember? Miss Swanston the cookery teacher who was also our House Mistress. She often also took us skiing and was really kind to me when I was sick. Positions of responsibility held Got the Posture badge but that was all although I did go on stage to present some flowers to a lady who did a piano concert as I was the youngest girl in the school but I was terrified and ran off stage before I had a chance to say what I was meant to say when everyone stopped clapping. Highlight your best and worst memories Skiing and swimming in Gstaad on the weekends. Taking half term trips to Geneva, Burn and Lausanne. Missing my family. Having a fire drill in the middle of the night, when the fire brigade demonstrated how to move people off balconies and not being told it was a drill and my sister hasn’t come outside (she slept through the whole thing!). Another time when my sister (Fiona Lygo) got off a train to buy a bar of chocolate with Michellle Crew at a mid station on the way back from a half term shopping trip, and the train left before they got back on. (A teacher got off at the next stop and went back to get them.) Being terrified of the ghost of a Nun who apparently killed herself jumping off a balcony when the school was a hotel and returned on 17th October every year to roam the corridors. Again being cold and scared as I was made to stand in the corridor one night by Miss Mills (matron) as my room mates had all gone visiting and her forgetting I was there and leaving me there until I was found by Miss Swanston in the early hours and carried back to bed in tears. Who have you kept in touch with? No one unfortunately. Life after Châtelard Education after Châtelard Went back to school in Hong Kong briefly before going to boarding school in Petworth Sussex a year or so later. Career Moved to Australia in 1982 with my family and started work in an advertising agency. Did this and client side marketing for many years until moving into Estate Agency and then property returning to the UK in 1998. Home Life Single, no children – family now spread around the globe with my Mother and one sister living in USA and a brother in Australia. Fiona is the mother of 2 girls, is divorced and lives in Devon. What are you doing now? Live in London and work for a Loft Conversion company.
