While the June 2008- June 2009 SAEP Annual Report has now been published (99), here¶s a quick review of the past 6 months at SAEP, to bring you up to speed: ECD Since June, 2009, the r ebuilding of Thandolwe thu Educare centre has now been completed! Additionally, Ikamvalethu and Nolufefe buildings have been renovated thanks to funds donated by Wing of Support. The graduations that were celebrated in these fantastic new structures were even more grand and excited than before. Helping out with all these new developments has been SAEP¶s newest long-term international volunteer, Jozefien Keppens, from Belgium, who arrived in October 2009 and will be staying with the ECD team for one year. High School Hope Scholars On Friday November 6 th , SAEP and the Hope Scholars went on an outing to Cavendish Mall in Claremont to see Disney¶s ³Earth´. This educational film made for a visually thrilling and intellectually exciting afternoon. Not only was this the first time any of the Hope Scholars had been to the movie theatre, but it was also a great opportunity for them to more tangibly understand environmental issues such as the effects of global warming, from drowning polar bears in the Arctic Circle to thirsty Elephants in the Okavango Delta in Botswana.

In a year-end statistical review of the Hope Scholars programme, SAEP uncovered some highly

encouraging positive results. For the Hope Scholars from Zisukhanyo, their maths scores increased from

being 75% above their peers in Term 1 to well over 100% in Terms 2 and 3 (i.e. their average marks were

twice that of the rest of their grade). This Hope Scholars "differential" at both schools has also increased

through the year in the 6 subjects where SAEP is not  directly tutoring, demonstrating the programme¶s

 positive spillover effect.

SMS (Matric Success)

After a wonderful Winter School, the SAEP Matric Success learners finished term 3 & 4 and took their exams, the results of which will be announced on 7 January 2010. In addition, the programme haswelcomed a new volunteer coordinator, Laylaa Kariem, helping out two days a week (also tutoringBridging Year).

Environment Club

On Saturday 24 October, ³350 International Day of Climate Action´ was celebrated with SAEP¶s after-

school environmental clubs. Three volunteers accompanied 40 high school students from Philippi toMuizenberg Beach, where Cape Town residents were gathering to send an important message to SouthAfrica¶s government: reduce carbon dioxide emissions! The learners reviewed green house gases and therepercussions of climate change, coming up with a creative way to spread the 350 message by putingtogether an impressive arrangement of sand and shells that spelled ³350 CO2´.

Bridging Year

In early October, the entire class went to Asset Program and met with Jennifer Court. Some interns

applied for Asset bursaries ± program pays for 75% of tuition fees.

On the fundraising side of things, the success of the programme has resulted in Friends of the Mandela

Rhodes Foundation granting SAEP¶s Bridging Year Programme US$25,000 for next year. Additionally,

SAEP would like to extend a big thank you to Univeristy of North Carolina students who raised $1235

USD for the programme as well.

In the November Intern Feedback process, learners called their Bridging Year an ³experience of a

lifetime´ where they ³learned to work with each other´. The boasted both personal and academic

improvements in computers, English, communication, leadership, their positive attitude, public speaking

and employability.

SAEP would also like to formally welcome Kanya Mdaka, the new Bridging Year Coordinator for the

upcoming calendar year.
