Dear Supporters:

Before we launch another exciting year in 2013, I’d like to look back– not just to an incredible 2012 – but to another time in the historyof the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. The date was Feb. 2, 1992,and the occasion was the grand re-opening of the Center at its currentlocation, the Kagey Home at 1650 Harrison Street.

Built in 1924 by the home’s founding family, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kagey, this example of Mediterranean Revival architecture is one of theoldest buildings in all of Broward County. It is currently designatedby the State of Florida as a significant historical structure and isforever to be held for public enjoyment by city government.

The Center first opened in 1978 at a small beachfront community centeron Hollywood Beach. Thanks to the visionary leadership of electedofficials in the City of Hollywood and dedicated individuals in ourcommunity, the Kagey site became a permanent home for the Center’scontemporary gallery exhibitions and education programs 20 years ago.

Today, the Kagey facility is a highly respected cultural landmark forresidents and visitors in Hollywood, and the Center is regarded as oneof South Florida’s leading multi-disciplinary arts institutions.

In addition to our stewardship of Kagey Home, the Center also managesthe Arts School next door and the 500-seat Hollywood CentralPerforming Arts Center just around the corner. In 2012, nearly 50,000people took part in an exhibition, performance or community activityin a Center-managed venue.

We invite you to learn more about how the Center uses the power of thearts to inspire and uplift our community in this 2012 Year in Review. Our successes serve as a testament to the vision of those pioneeringsupporters who worked so diligently to make sure the arts had a homein Hollywood.

The future of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is morepromising than ever thanks to the thousands of people who participatein our programs each year. We thank you for your past support and lookforward to welcoming you again in 2013.

In 2012 we presented 17 exhibitions, featuring 132 artists who examined a wide array of topics. The popular summer exhibition of LEGO sculptures, Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick, attracted 10,021 gallery visitors, the second highest attendance for a Center exhibition. Approximately 25% of the audience came from outside Broward County and included visitors from 28 states and 26 countries. The year consisted of the following exhibitions:

What’s Your Art?

In 2012, more than 7,500 children and adults of all backgrounds and ability levels painted, acted, sang, danced, wrote, drew, and sculpted as part of a Center program. Of these, more than 6,500 were youth.

The Center’s arts education programs for youth inspire the creativity in children and nurture their appreciation of the arts, strengthen the family bond, and grow awareness of the arts as an essential resource in a child’s social development and academic success. Youth programs were funded in part by the City of Hollywood Police Department’s Law Enforcement Forfeiture Funds, and reinforce the Department’s anti-crime and anti-drug initiatives.

Summer Arts Camp The 2012 summer camp operated at capacity as 262 youth enrolled in 14 sessions of 2 to 4 weeks. Each session ended with an exhibition in the Center’s Student Gallery or a theatrical performance at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. More than 2,100 family members and friends attended these presentations. Campers came from 17 municipalities, including three from out of state. 78.3% of enrollments were a returning student or recommended by someone, signaling the high satisfaction with the 10-week program.

“He loved the whole process. Never had a bad day! It is so wonderful to have a child who is completely thrilled each day to get up and go!” – Parent of a Young Artists participant

Arts ClassesThe Center’s education department presented the adult classes Painting Fundamentals, Clay Concepts, and The Joy of Painting. These classes were open to individuals of all ability levels and allowed participants to develop their skills and learn in a group setting. Our homeschool and after-school program provided art education to children of multiple age groups. The Center also provided youth and adults with private lessons in voice, piano, guitar, flute/recorder, and violin.

Research shows that children who participate regularly in the arts improve their attention span, learn more quickly, and develop higher level critical thinking skills. They also have fun.

Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow …. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.” – Kurt Vonnegut

Creative ConnectionThrough this new program designed for baby boomers, artists/educators ages 55+ presented free after-school arts enrichments for 360 youth enrolled at HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Dependant Youth), Hispanic Unity in Hollywood, and Women in Distress. Two-hour sessions for youth included mixed-media sculpture, beading/necklace making, musical theater, Zen box making, and Japanese drumming. Twenty boomers also presented the Creative Connection Arts Showcase in March, in which many performed for a live audience for the first time in their adult lives. Creative Connection was funded by a grant from the Community Foundation of Broward as part of its Re-engage for Good initiative.

“I want to salute the team at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and the recent [Creative Connection] art enrichment program that was presented for children in both our Outreach and Residential programs. It was amazing. … Art has a magical way of opening the door – giving voice and sense of accomplishment and self-esteem [to these children].”

– Mary Riedel, President and CEO, Women in Distress

Student Gallery During the 2011-12 school year, 282 students exhibited 331 works in the Center’s upstairs gallery. The schools included South Broward High School, Hollywood Hills Elementary, and Michael J. Krop High. This program is free and open to all schools in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Integrated Arts Distance LearningIn 22 live interactive videoconference broadcasts, the Center delivered free instruction to 1,325 students and 76 educators in Broward County Public Schools. Lessons in art, music, and literature incorporated math, language arts, history, social studies, and foreign language. The Center partnered with Bonnet House Museum and Gardens, Broward County Library, and Florida Youth Orchestra to present their specialty area for the 45-minute lessons.

“Students are able to participate and experience activities that they would never have exposure to without distance learning.” – Broward teacher

Partnerships After-school activities for youth included a 20-week school-site musical-theater program at Hochberg Preparatory School, which concluded with a live performance of Aladdin before a full house at Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center.

Page 8: Year in Reviewdocshare01.docshare.tips/files/11686/116868870.pdfJune 8 – Aug. 19 Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick; Karen Starosta-Gilinski: Cloud 9 “The scope, detail and curvature

In 2012, approximately 95% of youth who attended a gallery exhibition, live performance, or participated in an education activity did so for $6 or less. These include more than 4,000 youth who viewed Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick.

Thanks to the support of our donors, we make the arts accessible to everyone who wishes to visit our facilities.

Free Admission DayFree admission to gallery exhibitions is offered on the third Sunday of each month and provides a savings of $22–$32 for a family of four. Since 2008, more than 4,000 people have viewed more than 60 gallery shows at no cost through this program. Free Admission Day was funded in part by Wells Fargo in 2012.

“The whole family loved it!” – Gallery visitor

Fulfilling Our MissionThe mission of the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is to create opportunities for all people to experience the visual and performing arts via contemporary gallery exhibitions, educational programs, and live stage performances that reflect the highest standards of artistry and diversity.

Page 9: Year in Reviewdocshare01.docshare.tips/files/11686/116868870.pdfJune 8 – Aug. 19 Nathan Sawaya: The Art of the Brick; Karen Starosta-Gilinski: Cloud 9 “The scope, detail and curvature

Summer Arts Camp ScholarshipsThanks to the generosity of our funders, the Center provided financial aid to 41 campers valued at more than $11,000. These scholarships were made possible by Fundacion Sanjuan, the Florida Theatrical Association, and the many donors who contributed as part of our Matching Gift Challenge.

Summer Arts Camp Scholarships assist families who would not have otherwise been able to enroll their children in Summer Arts Camp. For the families of participating youth, summer camp provided a positive experience as caregivers saw how their children rose to the challenge of creating and presenting in public.

“I would like to thank all of the patrons who helped make this happen for us and for other children who might otherwise have not been able to experience this enrichment. This is a great and selfless thing. Thank you and thank you Art and Culture Center of Hollywood for making this happen.” – The parent of two campers who received a tuition scholarship

Coming in 2013: Peanuts! The Center promises another exciting and enriching year in 2013. Among the many highlights is the summer exhibition Charles M. Schulz: Pop Culture in Peanuts. This is the first exhibition of original drawings from the legendary Peanuts comic strip since 2002 to be presented outside the Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif. This is a rare opportunity to see the originals by a true American original, the late Charles Schulz.

Teen and Parent Ambassadors ProgramThe Teen Ambassadors Program provides youth with hands-on experiences in program delivery in the Center’s Education Department, and in the gallery as interpreters for our family-friendly summer exhibitions.

Among this year’s ambassadors was a returning 14-year-old student who had been a participant in the Summer Arts Camp program for the previous eight years. As a Teen Arts Ambassador, she assisted instructors with classroom management, set construction and coordinating student activity. We are grateful to have had this student participate with our programs over the last eight years and are excited to watch her grow into a mature, responsible young adult.

The Parent Ambassador program allows parents to become involved in community outreach efforts at the Center. Parents work collaboratively with the education department staff to raise awareness about the impact of arts education on youth and families while encouraging involvement in the Center’s visual and performing arts programs.

Facility rentalsThe 500-seat Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center is utilized by outside organizations as a rental facility for performing arts events and community gatherings. Each year, approximately 30,000 people attend activities presented by outside organizations at the Performing Arts Center. This space is also utilized by the City of Hollywood and the School Board of Broward County.

In addition to the theater, the Center makes its historic (circa 1924) Main Gallery facility and adjacent Arts School available. With three different venues to choose from, each with its respective advantages and capabilities, Art and Culture Center management works with clients to determine the ideal venue for their events. To learn more, call 954.921.3439, ext. 225, or visit artandculturecenter.org/theater.

InternshipsThe Center has a vibrant internship program available to college students or anyone interested in developing their professional skills. Applications for internships are accepted year-round, and are available in public relations, exhibitions, education, and general administrative roles.

Get Involved!More information on all of the programs in this publication is available at ArtAndCultureCenter.org, where you can also sign up for our mailing list, buy tickets to events, and become a member. You can also call us at 954. 921. 3274, or email [email protected]

Special EventsAmong the many ways the Center raises funds is through special annual events, such as the Hot Hollywood Glam Fall Fund-raiser, Abracadabra Exhibition and Fund-raiser, Golf for Art, and Cuisine for Art. In May 2012, we honored former Miami Dolphins star Jason Taylor for his contributions to youth in South Florida at the 15th annual Cuisine for Art held at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Jason accepted the award at an event in which elected officials and private sector leaders in Hollywood and Broward County served as waiters. The Center also raises funds as beneficiaries of events held by outside organizations.

In 2012, this included Party With A Purpose, hosted by Hollywood Gazette at Bongo’s at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino; the annual Galleria Men of Style Shopping Night, in which we honored Jeff Mikus, Director of Fun and Recreation at the Westin Diplomat Resort and Spa; and the grand opening of the new Soo-Woo Japanese and Korean Steakhouse.

Sponsorships and DonationsContributors to the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood support our mission to make the arts accessible to everyone in our community. Businesses, foundations and individuals provide support by sponsoring exhibitions, education programs and performances.

At the 15th Annual Cuisine for Art, Sawgrass Mills partnered with the Center and helped raise more than $11,000. Event Sponsors receive tickets to special events and recognition for their support in enhancing our programming.

Planned GivingNumerous options are available that will allow a donor to successfully combine the desire to create a lasting legacy of art and culture in our community with important estate planning and tax benefits.

SupportThe Art and Culture Center of Hollywood is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization supported in part by its members, paid admissions, private donors and foundations, and the following public entities: the City of Hollywood; the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council; and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Council on Arts and Culture. We value this support and work diligently to meet the high expectations we have set with our programs.
