BETTER RIDING FOR ALLPeopleForBikes is uniting millions of individuals, thousands

of businesses and hundreds of communities to make riding

better for everyone. Because when people ride bikes, great

things happen.

Our vision: bicycle riding is safe and appealing for everyone

who wants to ride—improving our world through bikes.

We make your bicycling experience better by focusing our

efforts in three key areas:

INFRASTRUCTURE

INFRASTRUCTURE

GRASSROOTS GRASSTOPS

Many Americans would start riding a bike—or ride more

often—if they could find more safe places to ride. Whether

you want to safely ride to work, comfortably cruise around

with family, or pedal some trails without driving far from

home, we are working to make your ride even better.

We direct two programs that help build more places to ride.

GREEN LANE PROJECTOur Green Lane Project helps U.S. cities build better bike lanes to create low-stress streets. We focus on protected bike lanes, which are on-street lanes separated from traffic by curbs, planters, parked cars or posts. Protected bike lanes are a transformational tool to create places where people of all ages and abilities feel comfortable riding bikes.

COMMUNITY GRANTS PROGRAMOur Community Grants Program is an important and tangible way that PeopleForBikes gives back to the people, organizations, and cities and towns that support us. We award funding to projects that create better places to ride.

75%Increase in bike use on a street after a protected lane is installed

GRASSROOTS GRASSTOPS

It is vital that America’s leaders respect bicycling.

Our Business Network is the voice for thousands of

businesses across America that support bicycling and

understand its economic benefits.

Nearly one out of three Americans rides a

bike every year. But until we launched the

PeopleForBikes campaign, only a fraction had

ever been active in making bicycling better. By

uniting individual bike riders, we’re giving the

bicycling community a large, powerful voice.

2014 was a big year for our grassroots army.

After more than four years of outreach to U.S.

bicyclists, we reached the major milestone of

one million riders united!

BETTER RIDING NEAR YOUHere are a few highlights of the ways we’ve worked to make riding better in 2014.

SEATTLE, WASeattle’s Second Avenue, redesigned to save lives. In 2010 Seattle news site PubliCola called Second Avenue’s stripe of white paint “The Worst Bike Lane in the City.” Many rejoiced when Mayor Ed Murray announced that Second Avenue would be the site of downtown’s first protected bike lane, and that it’d be finished in time for the summer 2014 launch of the Pronto bike sharing system. (It was.)

FRESNO, CABike shop rounds up for better riding. Local bike retailer Sunnyside Bicycles pioneered the PeopleForBikes Retail Roundup program, where customers round up their purchases to the nearest dollar with a donation to PeopleForBikes. We doubled their donations and awarded two grants to the Fresno County Bicycle Coalition.

DENVER, COColorado’s first state bike-sharing day. To celebrate Colorado’s birthday on August 1, PeopleForBikes, along with AAA Colorado and the Colorado Office of Economic Development & International Trade, sponsored a day of unlimited free 30-minute bike-sharing rides in Denver, Boulder and Aspen.

DALLAS, TXMayors for bikes. We highlighted the benefits of bicycling during a presentation at the 82nd Annual U.S. Conference of Mayors.

KANSAS CITY, MOTop pro racer Tim Johnson leads the inaugural Ride on Chicago. Twenty-three PeopleForBikes supporters rode from Kansas City to Chicago in five days to raise money and awareness for better bicycling.

MASON CITY, IARAGBRAI holds first ever “PeopleForBikes Day.” We joined more than 20,000 other people in riding 500 miles across Iowa on RAGBRAI (the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa). With the support of the Iowa Bicycle Coalition (IBC), nearly 8,000 people became members of PeopleForBikes in the months leading up to the ride and during the week itself. We shared the love by awarding the IBC $10,000 to help make biking better in Iowa.
