What is Physical Literacy?
Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsi-
bility for engagement in physical activities for life in any environment. The objective of undertaking a physical literacy directive
at the YMCA is to increase the movement vocabulary in our partici-
pants. An increased movement vocabulary of an individual is related to
a greater chance for success and confidence in a variety of sport and
recreational activities.
Our goal is to teach kids fundamental movement and sport skills like
how to throw, catch, run and move – with the goal of giving them the
capacities and confidence to participate in activity for life!
Why is Physical Literacy Important?
Childhood obesity and inactivity is on the rise.
A lack of physical literacy in today’s youth has contributed to the child-
hood obesity epidemic. In Canada, fewer than half our children and
youth are active enough to ensure healthy growth and development.
Even scarier, the percentage of youth that are meeting physical activity
requirements decreases dramatically in pre-teen and teenage years as social pressure can make someone who is not confident
retreat from participating to avoid embarrassment. YMCA Physical Literacy programs aim to help children learn the Fundamen-
tal Movement Skills that are the base of all other human movement to keep them on track or help them catch up with their
peers. We do this by providing a safe environment where all children feel comfortable learning/developing skills to build their
physical literacy vocabulary through fun games and positive social interactions. While Physical Literacy Classes specifically tar-
get this area, it is important to note that physical literacy is also seen in many of our youth, aquatics and child care programs.

Multisport Fundamentals
The Regina Multisport Club is partnering with YMCA Regina to offer 7 to 13 year-olds youth a multisport activity program to have fun, improve fitness, and to learn proper swimming, biking and running techniques. Novice and experienced youth are welcome. Because this is a multisport activity, cross-training is built in and the participants will be provided variety, balance, and gain overall fitness. Also, it will provide confidence for youth that may be interested in participating in local youth-oriented multi-sport events (e.g. the YMCA Y-Kids-Tri event in July).

Regina Marlins Swim Club
Based at the Regina YMCA, the Regina Marlins swim club provides professional coaching to swimmers from 4 years to post-secondary. Our coaches work with our swimmers in small groups, helping them to set and achieve their personal fitness and swimming goals. Our team offers an environment of fun, fitness and friendship. Mini Marlins: Boys and girls as young as 4 years old progress quickly in our Mini Marlins program. Mini Marlins have lots of fun while developing skills and endurance. As they progress through three levels of Mini Mar-lins, swimmers will learn the four basic strokes as well as starts and turns. Competitive Program: For swimmers who are 7 years up to post-secondary, we offer a high quality competitive speed swimming pro-gram. Swimmers progress through our White, Blue, Red and Senior com-petitive groups. Competitive swimmers attend developmental swim meets throughout the province and may attend invitational and champi-onship meets throughout Canada. Non-Competitive Program: This program is designed for swimmers who want to stay involved in swimming and work on fitness and endurance. It is a great option for cross-training with other sports, such as hockey, triathlon, gymnastics, or dance. It can also complement swimming lessons or life-saving courses by providing additional opportunities to develop strength and endurance. Speed swimming develops strength and endurance, and skill. It is a great way to improve fitness while having fun. Swimming provides a low impact, aerobic workout for your whole body. Moving through the water provides resistance training, which strengthens and tones muscles. We have operated successfully in Regina since 1967 and are affiliated with Swim Saskatchewan and Swimming Canada. More information about the Marlins is available by contacting [email protected] , visiting our website at www.reginamarlins.com or calling 306-789-7732.

Without developed physical literacy, children and youth are at a greater risk of dropping out of physical activity and sport. By developing fundamental movement skills and increasing one’s gross motor ability, it allows for one to establish a good founda-tion to participate in many sports and physical activities. YMCA of Regina Physical Literacy classes teach Fundamental Move-ment Skills through fun games, obstacle courses and coaching from our YMCA fundamental movement skill trained leaders.
Our Physical Literacy Classes will cover: Fundamental Human Movements (Run, Jump, Hop...) Fundamental Sport Skills (Throw, Catch, Kick...) Fundamental Gymnastics (Balance, Tumbling…)

FUNdamentals (5-9Y) Continue a child’s movement endeavours with this skills focused class. Whether your child is in sport or simply looking to increase or improve their movement repertoire, this class will provide a user manual for children to master some already familiar movements and work on new, more complex skills. It’s very important for children to practice a wide variety of movement skills to increase their confidence to try new activities now and into adult-hood.
Pivoting, Dodging, Changing Directions
Bounding and Landing Throwing, Catching, Kicking and Passing fundamentals
Skipping, Galloping, Lateral Movements and Balance
FUNdamentals – Girls (5-12Y) Empowering young girls to be strong, confident movers is aim of this class. Research shows that girls who are not actively engaged in sport/recreational activity by the age of 10 are at a higher risk of being less active through their teen years and into adulthood. Our goal is to foster Physical Literacy skills in an inviting all female environment that is fun and builds con-fidence. Course material is identical to FUNdamentals.
Creative Movement FUNdamentals & Creative Movement (5-7Y & 8-10Y) A continuation and extension of skills introduced in Phys. Lit. FUNdamentals. Youth enrolled in Creative Movement classes will be challenged further by adding more movement variations and complex combination patterns to build on the skills they have previously learned and a chance to become more competent and confident in their movements. To be successful in this class, youth should have experience with the skills listed in the FUNdamentals. Skills learned in this class are a great introduction to skills needed for Parkour Jam.
Bounding, Landing and Rotation Lateral Movements and Balance Vaulting, hurdling, hanging and tumbling Skipping, Galloping, Lateral Movements and Balance
Multisport FUNdamentals (5-9Y) A continuation from the skills introduced in Phys. Lit. FUNdamentals; Multisport focuses on team sport movements and object manipulation. They have a history of producing high perfor-mance athletes that compete at a National and Internation-al level. All classes are at the Downtown YMCA.

YMCA Plusone Mentoring Program Become a volunteer mentor with the YMCA Plusone Mentoring Program and unleash the potential in a young person in your community! Modeled after the award-winning program from the YMCA of Scotland, the Plusone Mentoring program focuses on giving young people the opportunity to develop self-determination, self-esteem and a supportive relationship with an adult role model through the Youth Work approach.
As a mentor, you will receive a membership to the YMCA at no cost for the duration of your participation in the program, train-ing in the Youth Work approach, the YMCA Child Protection Policy and Procedures and the opportunity to build a meaningful relationship with a young person in your community. Mentors will also receive one-to-one support from Program facilitators in order to ensure the relationship is reaching its fullest potential.
The mentoring relationship lasts for one-year during this time, mentors will be matched with a young person that has been re-ferred to the program from our Community Partners. The pair will then meet weekly at their local YMCA for 2-3 hours and par-ticipate in sports, leisure and capacity building activities. The frequency of meetings decrease as the year progress in order to leverage the skills and abilities the young person has developed into a sense of agency and confidence to confront their daily lives.
More information about the program including the Application form can be found on the YMCA Website. Program Facilitator Shruti Goudar 306.551.3354 will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
