YMCA of Saskatoon 2016-2017 Annual Report Our vision for the Saskatoon YMCA includes promoting healthy living, helping children and families thrive, and fostering belonging and connec- tion. It is our firm belief that a YMCA experience creates outcomes of better health and more frequent physical activity, children and youth making the best choices as they transition to adulthood and people experiencing a sense of connection to the YMCA and the broader community. As we look to serve our community better, the 2016 – 2017 year saw signifi- cant change for the YMCA of Saskatoon. Reinvestment into our downtown loca- tion commenced, with many improve- ments to enhance user experience and benefit our community. A new gym floor, fitness area cardio equipment, strength equipment and creation of spaces for people to connect have al- ready served to improve our offering to the community. Future developments include creating more family friendly and visible play areas, updating change rooms and licensed child care areas. These changes are intended to continue to grow our membership and extend our reach into the community. Pro- gramming is being enhanced to reach more youth and families. The diversity embraced by the YMCA, by which the lives of a broad mix of children, youth, adults, seniors and families are enriched, is critical to meeting the current and future needs of our city. Supporting the YMCA through your membership, volunteer hours, and financial contributions will ensure that more people in Saskatoon can benefit from a YMCA experience. Thank you for your commitment to the future of the Saskatoon YMCA. -Brian Heagy, President PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE YMCA aims for positive impact on community Starts Here Growth

YMCA of Saskatoon2016-2017 Annual Report

Our vision for the Saskatoon YMCA includes promoting healthy living, helping children and families thrive, and fostering belonging and connec-tion. It is our firm belief that a YMCA experience creates outcomes of better health and more frequent physical activity, children and youth making the best choices as they transition to adulthood and people experiencing a sense of connection to the YMCA and the broader community.

As we look to serve our community better, the 2016 – 2017 year saw signifi-cant change for the YMCA of Saskatoon. Reinvestment into our downtown loca-

tion commenced, with many improve-ments to enhance user experience and benefit our community. A new gym floor, fitness area cardio equipment, strength equipment and creation of spaces for people to connect have al-ready served to improve our offering to the community. Future developments include creating more family friendly and visible play areas, updating change rooms and licensed child care areas. These changes are intended to continue to grow our membership and extend

our reach into the community. Pro-gramming is being enhanced to reach more youth and families.

2017 Volunteers of the Year

Peggy Anderson2017 Volunteer of the Year (co-recipient)

Peggy began her volunteer work at the YMCA get-ting certified to lead Y-Cycle classes. She then added Y-Fit workouts in the gymnasium to her repertoire. In both areas, aside from her steadfast service fulfilling her own commitments, Peggy has been a frequent life-saver in filling in for other instructors. This ded-ication is crucial to members who depend on their regular workouts to alleviate stress and contribute a feeling of well-being to their day. Peggy’s cheerful, encouraging disposition is also felt in her enthusiastic participation in other YMCA events, like the Corporate Challenge and the Strong Kids Campaign. Peggy truly lives the mission and values of the YMCA and is a great contributor to our community.

I became as a member there in 2010 when another member coerced me to come with her at noon; she really liked it.

I took the fitness training because of the encourage-ment of Norma Gunningham-Kapphahn (initially) and Kris Seto-Davis, as well as Jim Halmarson.

The things I enjoy the most about the YMCA are the members and staff (obviously!). They are always smil-ing and encouraging.

If participants do not like something that we are do-ing, they don’t hold back and express exactly how they feel – body and facial expressions to match, together with sound effects.

Teaching at the Y gives me a sense of fulfillment. I find most days time is not something I have an abun-dance of and this fits perfect at lunch, allowing me to volunteer my time for the betterment of peoples health, and mine at the same time.

Exercise and fitness is one of my passions, and the fact that the Y allows me the opportunity to pass that on to others means a lot to me. I am so thankful for the Y!

- Peggy Anderson

Jim has spent nearly half his life as a Saskatoon YMCA volunteer.

It’s been 22 years since we sat in Teresa Ashton’s office in 1995, asking if Jim might find a place here. The YMCA staff and volunteers expect him to do his job, but he’s also seen as someone who deserves an interest-ing, interdependent life full of challenge, relationships, contribution and fun. The YMCA has been an extraor-dinary place of belonging for Jim, not because he has a disability, but because he is valued for his work and presence. There’s an unwavering welcome for Jim, even on grumpy days, or when he needs reminders, or when silence seems easier than the effort to talk. The Y’s flex-ibility allows Jim to stay connected with his family and friends around the world. Jim can travel with the confi-dence there will be dirty towels and a pool deck to mop when he gets back! When Jim has a self-satisfied grin at the end of his workday, and staff and volunteers give high-fives, saying “See you tomorrow!” we know he is part of a strong family. After all this time–and a lot of towels–Jim’s contribution and his presence is still val-ued, and the Saskatoon YMCA is one of those remark-able places where that happens for so many people.

- Rick Schier and Karin Melberg Schwier

Jim Schwier2017 Volunteer of the Year (co-recipient)

In selecting from our great volunteers, the YMCA leadership team felt Jim's many years of dedication helping the operations staff, and his faithful participa-tion in YMCA events like the Caribou Classic and the Strong Kids Campaign, made him a great role model and a fitting honoree.

Jim is not just a volunteer, he is like family to us - someone we care for, and also someone from whom we learn. Over the years his dependable participation in the workday has given many YMCA members and staff the chance to appreciate ability over disability, and to see how much richer the world is when inclu-sion and caring are embraced.
