EDITOR’S NOTE

3 YOGASATTVA

Namaste,

A happy New Year and a warm welcome to you all in the 102nd year of The Yoga Institute. With not only a new year but also a new decade upon us, we need to make sure to set attainable goals for ourselves for a happy, healthy and balanced 2020. Yoga can surely help, having weathered many new decades successfully .

What better way to start the new decade than by continuing our self-improvement, guided by our very own guru, Hansaji. She suggests “A Three-point Programme for the New You” that includes Focus, Vairagya and Tapa, helping us to master the demands of the new decade.

This edition of Yogasattva also gives special attention to senior citizens and how they can practice yoga effectively in everyday life. In the winter months, skin care should not be neglected by anyone and we will be sharing some tips on that.

After our celebrations at the end of the old year, stepping into the new one, Dr. Jayadeva reminds of of the “Need for Discipline” in his insightful article on the topic, cautioning us not to give in to chaos, violence and untruth.

Finally, Shri Yogendraji sheds light on the “Changing Image of Yoga” that was as visible when he wrote the article as it is today with ever new permutations of ‘Yoga’ coming to the fore.

Wishing you a joyous and prosperous 2020!

Smt. Hansaji J. YogendraDirector, The Yoga Institute.

new decade is here and everyone is lled with

Aenthusiasm. This new decade inspires us to transform ourselves for the better. Three most important qualities

that you can develop are: Focus, Vairagya (detachment towards results) and Tapa (working hard) .

Focus on knowing yourself thoroughly well, know your body strength and limitations and most importantly, know your mind, its nature, thought processes when with others and when alone, and also know your emotions. If the focus is self-growth then automatically, the attention will not go to others, what others are doing, why they are doing it and what they should or should not do.

All our sensory organs are open to the external world, hence our rst attention goes to the outside world. Somebody’s behavior, somebody’s thoughts, somebody’s action becomes our centre. We have to deal with others, hence our mind weighs more towards the outside world. We have to shift the mind from the external to the internal to achieve Vairagya or detachment from the material world. In Yoga there is a technique called Yoni Mudra where you close all the senses to go within. This should be practised for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Vairagya is a positive virtue, it helps you to do your duty well. If you keep your hand close to your heart, you won’t be able to see it properly. But if you keep it away from you, then you will be able to see it properly and if it has any problems, you can rectify it by doing your duty. Remember we should not change anybody; we have to accept everybody.

Now to become a new you, identify the weaknesses and learn from it. For example, if you are a foodie, you need to analyse

what you eat and how much you eat. Change should always be slow. Slowly reduce the quantity of food and then make a gentle shift to nutritious and home cooked food. Eventually, you will reach a stage where you will not have any likes or dislikes for food. A strong personality needs to be developed that is beyond likes and dislikes. It is possible when you do Tapa (working hard).

You have to work hard and succeed in life. If you fall down, it is okay, get up again and start again. But do not push yourself very hard, understand the limitations of your body and respect them. In one of the cancer camps, I was telling the patients that if they reduce overthinking, then their body will heal because then the body will be in touch with the soul. A restless mind doesn’t allow going closer to the soul.

To be successful in transforming, you will have to put an effort and remain self- motivated. Your journey to reach this goal should be creative and it is possible only if you know yourself well.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Shri Manohar Bhatia

Yoga can be practised at any age. As we age, there are some structural and functional changes happening in our body, for example, the muscles become loose, the joints become stiff, our breathing becomes shallow and the immunity level goes down and the healing process slows down. Yoga helps us in managing the changes and we are able to live healthily and joyfully on our own.

We, as senior citizens, remember our past and always feel ‘how strong was I and now, why am I not able to do the same task like before?’. Yoga says you must understand the life process and do not compare with the past. It teaches us to accept the way we are. Accept the world as it is and enjoy with every person, every moment and every situation in life.

We should adjust ourselves with the situation and the health problem so that we can take care of ourselves.

Yoga is a set of discipline based on four basic factors that should be understood and followed in our daily life.

1. AHAR: Follow discipline in taking your food intake, eat 4 to 5 times a day but remember that food should be easily digestible and never overeat. No solid food intake after 8 pm. Do not eat when upset (angry) or not hungry.

2.VIHAR: Spend some time on a hobby of your choice. Do relaxation at least twice a day (SAVASANA). Spend some time remembering God and meditate on his name.

3. ACHAR: Follow proper routine - walk in the morning and do a light routine of asanas in the morning and evening. Some simple breathing techniques like Pranayama I, IV, and IX. Sit in the sun for 20 to 30 minutes daily.

4. VICHAR: You are born by choice of the God. Have faith in him and remind yourself that everything is happening by the law of the larger reality. It is said that if we accept and adjust ourselves with every situation, the achievement or grace of God automatically happens.

Here at The Yoga Institute, there are camps for senior citizens and regular classes where very simple techniques are taught like hand, neck and leg exercises, stretching, bending, twisting and compression like Talasana, Standing Vakrasana, Parvatasana and many more.

Care of the SkinI found a very useful book by Shri Yogendraji, Hatha Yoga Simplied. I have realized that Yoga is a holistic system of self-culture and it involves and encompasses many branches of science like neurology, anatomy, psychology, physiology. It aims at the development of health of body and mind and through its practice, can give a healthy life and longevity.

The skin is the largest organ of the body. It also makes up 15% of the body weight. If this barrier were not there, what would happen? The internal organs, like the heart, the stomach, the lungs, the liver, the pancreas, etc. would be exposed to the injurious effects of the environment like heat, cold, dust, air.

Nature of the Skin

The skin is also called the mirror of the body. In a diseased body, usually the mind cannot remain healthy; the same is true of the skin. What is healthy skin? In my opinion, a skin which has a lustre of its own, is blemishless, soft, supple and free from lesions is considered to be a healthy skin. Many times a skin lesion or condition is an effective or disease.

The skin is composed of three layers: The upper one is called the epidermis. It is paper thin. The second layer is the dermis, which is nine times thicker and has many of the connective tissues. The hypoderm or the subcutaneous tissue is the inner layer containing the fat cells. The thickness of this layer is distributed beautifully by nature: wherever there is more use, like the soles of the feet, the thickness is more. The appendages of the skin are the hair, the sweat glands, the sebaceous glands and the nails. Certain chemical substances and vitamins are manufactured by the skin with the help of sunlight. The sebaceous glands help in oiling the skin and the sweat glands, which are deep down with special openings, help in the excretion of waste products. The skin serves a useful purpose in many ways.

What is healthy skin? In my opinion, a skin which has a lustre of its own, soft, supple and free from blemishes.

It helps to protect the internal organs, it manufactures Vitamin D, it helps to excrete waste products and regulates the temperature to a certain extent. It serves as one of the instruments of perception and sensations like pain, heat, touch, due to sensory nerve endings in the skin.

Mind and the Skin

The effect of the mind and the nervous system on the skin is tremendous. It is a common observation that when some people are embarrassed, they blush or when some are angry, they become very red. This shows that the mind has some control over the skin. When emotionally upset, you can end up having a

psycho-cutaneous condition. Neurodermatitis, alopecia, acne and psoriasis are some of these conditions. As Yoga helps in steadying the mind and thus tackling a situation in a balanced way, it helps to deal with these skin conditions, which are caused by emotional factors. In Yoga, one is taught how to control respiratory movements, these in turn affect the blood ow and temperature regulation. When it is very hot, the blood vessels dilate and when it is cold, they contract, thus helping to preserve body heat. From birth to old age, changes in the skin occur continuously. Skin that is uniform in colour, not too dry or too oily, with a normal lustre and glow, even pigmentation and blemishless, seems to indicate health of the whole person. I have noticed that those who practice Yoga regularly have a special kind of glow on their faces.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Twinkle Digesh Chheda is an energetic, bubbly yoga teacher who smiles often and makes those around her feel at ease. It is hard to believe that she joined The Yoga Institute in 2015 because she was feeling low and depressed. “A friend suggested I join The Yoga Institute,” she said. “So I did the 7-Day Camp and was hooked - I wanted to know more about y o g a a n d g o d e e p e r , espec ia l l y i n t e rms o f anatomy, Bhagavad Gita and bhavas - and joined the 2-Year TTC.”

More than four years later, Twinkle can honestly say that she is a changed person: “Yoga has changed me in terms of relationships, my profession and my own self,” she states. “I used to have expectations from people, due to which I used to get sad and depressed. Now, I do pranayama and I feel I am a balanced person. Instead of changing the world, I change myself. Instead of getting upset, I see the positive even when things are bad for me.”

Twinkle cannot stress the importance of pranayama and meditation enough and has even incorporated them in her professional yoga classes. She teaches six classes a day, Monday through Friday, and Thursdays are dedicated to pranayama exclusively. “We do 40 minutes of pranayama and then 20 minutes of shavasana with music so that the students can focus their thoughts.” After initial hesitation due to the misconception that yoga means vigorous asanas, students now look forward to Thursdays and their chance to relax.

In one student’s case, a 53-year-old woman, the regular pranayama practice with Twinkle even saved her life: She was watching a movie in a theatre in Andheri when she had a heart attack. Though she was rushed to the hospital immediately, the journey took time because the hospital is located in Dadar. She underwent bypass surgery and the doctor later told her that had her lungs not be strong due to the regular pranayama practice, she would have not survived the long journey to the hospital.

Twinkle has long understood the benets of a yoga way of life. “I was going through depression when I joined The Yoga Institute

and was completely ne soon after. Now, I do my meditation and without any reason, I am happy,” she says. And this calmness and balance of mind has affected her surroundings too. Twinkle stays in a joint family that consists of 13 people in total - apart from her in-laws, her husband and her 11-year-old son, there are also two

brothers-in-law and their families. “My own positivity is affecting my surroundings,” says Twinkle. “My husband, my family is very happy.”

And even Twinkle’s yoga classes have changed: While she thought of yoga as an exercise before, now she goes deeper and explains the bhavas in layperson-friendly terms in her classes, be they group or individual classes, pre- or post-natal y o g a o r c l a s s e s f o r corporates. “When I make people do asanas now, I e x p l a i n t o t h e m t h e exper iences - forward-bending for example - and they feel really relaxed. It is really affecting them, their whole body and the whole c lass is more re laxed.

Before, it was more strenuous but now there is 10 minutes of compulsory shavasana and Om chanting.”

And whatever she has learned, Twinkle passes on to her students: When one of them developed a thyroid condition, Twinkle advised her to try Om chanting and within a month, the student’s test results came back normal again. This was based on Twinkle’s own experience who developed a thyroid condition in May but was sure she wanted to give yoga a chance before she tried any medication. So she focused on the appropriate asanas and Om chanting, and now all her test results are in range again.

For the New Year, Twinkle is excited to continue her internship at The Yoga Institute, which she recently started. Now, she is helping 2-Year and 7-Month TTC students out on Saturdays and is grateful to Ramendra Sir for the opportunity and his guidance. For 2020 she says “Be committed to your sadhana. Don’t worry, just go with the ow.”

By SHRI YOGENDRAJI

ecause of the mercurial mind of humans, the image of

Bthe fundamental truth and facts take on different forms at different stages in the history of humankind. And, while it

is desirable that in this process, the true facts and the fundamental truths should not change, it has unfortunately so happened that with the passage of time, truths have become perverse and dubious in the minds of human beings. A stage in history has now been reached where even sublimity has been reduced to ridicule. This change in the presentation of what-once-was is a common phenomenon, and Yoga has not been able to escape such retribution with the passage of time - ve thousand years or more - due to the mercurial human mind.

The changes in the original image occur also because of the change in thinking, need and circumstances at every stage of religious, philosophical, historical, sociological, political, industrial and what else in the life of humans. For example, in the case of religion, the symbolization that grew out of its truths has become so distorted that one does not know whether what is now referred to as religion is genuine religion. In fact, such an incarnation turns out to be nothing else but mere formalities and rituals - sometimes in direct conict with the origin. So also does the projection of democracy get blurred when the good of a ruling few supersedes the interest of many. As a result, the image of religion as the dispenser of truths has been ejected by the rising commission of science, which has taken over as the agonist of truths.

Yoga has also suffered this common fate and what therefore is now called Yoga is often what Yoga is not. The original mythological personication of Yoga rested on something primordial inherent as the innite knowledge with the First Being who evolved this universe. This image later included the gods and goddesses whose knowledge and practice of Yoga made

them what they adumbrate. This agentship of Yoga associated with divine beings was later supplemented with the spiritual and metaphysical quintessence of what may be regarded as the highest achievement of life. The identity of Yoga thus became rooted in extramundane thinking, mediation and highest attainments. The mystic paragon however got further bedeviled by the magical and miracle-mongering.

Hazy as such a personication was, an attempt to present a rm and integral image of the total yoga-content – including even the physical – was made by Pataῆjali. Here, Yoga stood as the redeemer of all human sufferings (bhavatāpenataptānām yogohi paramauṣadhihi). It embodied the birth of a science that is to bestow upon human beings all that is best in health, happiness, peace and freedom. But because of the references – which might have been injected later to supernatural powers, which follow in the human evolution through Yoga, the xation on miracles and the impossible seized the popular mind.

The metaphysical Yoga and its applied methods thus found place in almost everything but more so in all extremes. Consequently, the popular notions of Yoga and the yogin ranged from burying underground to ying in the air, from digesting poisons to living on nothing, from leaving the body at will to living forever, from meditation to union with God, from immunity against cause and effect to eternal liberation and so forth. In fact, there is no limit to such vague representations when it comes to yoga because even a gymnast is now a yogin, a nature cure practitioner is also a yogin, so is the allopath and all such who have become advisers on Yoga to the Government of India. Such changing and confusing distortion of yoga is a great obstacle in the progress of the subject either at the individual, social or governmental level. It is essential, therefore, that the true image of Yoga as a redeemer of human sufferings should be rstly reinstated at the ideological level to be simultaneously reinforced at the ideological level to be simultaneously reinforced by the application of its technology through the media of those who are experts not only with one of these but with both - the ideology and technology of Yoga.

YOGIC INSIGHTS

For a society or a country to be well governed, a certain discipline and self-control become necessary. Allowing each to live as he or she likes is sure to lead to chaos as the interests of individuals are likely to conict. What will follow is violence and untruth - in fact, both are synonymous in Yoga. If suffering has been the lot of humankind even after centuries of civilization and culture, it speaks ill of the society and the world that did not benet from these. Have we ever thought why our civilization and culture – with all their promises and traditions of religion, science, philosophy, sociology, economics, politics and what else there is – have so far failed to give a positive shape to a normal human society where everyone can live in peace, can enjoy happiness and be free? We hardly realize that this is due to the bane of a permissive society, which is not the product of today as some think, but which is an evil that made inroads, though in small measure, right from the beginning of our civilization and culture. For example, the divine rights of royalty and the might and main of a privileged class had scant respect for self-control and discipline. Their behavior pattern was governed by their attitude, which held self-control in contempt and discipline as abasement.

In a permissive society, exceptions become the rules and rules remain as mere exceptions.

In a permissive society, exceptions become the rule and the rules remain as mere exceptions. So whatever principles, commandments, rules, etc. were formulated by religion, ethics, sociology, economics, law and so on have remained operative only for those who respect and obey them. Others who dened the structure and authority behaved cynically. After much deliberation on the issues of right and wrong, a framework of rules, customs and commandments happens to be projected – and do we not nd them uniformly good everywhere? But these fail to be imperative. Exceptions enjoyed by a few become an eyesore to all others and the latter in their turn take every opportunity to perpetrate the same on the sky. When the majority becomes involved in an act that is socially and legally wrong, there is very little left to be done but to look the other way. This permissiveness is the Magna Carta for the vegetative society that is self-centered and opposed to conventions, discipline, rules and commandments of any kind. Its interest lies in self-satisfaction at every opportunity and by every means possible. There is no directive except sensate pleasure though it may be temporary and consequently harmful even to itself.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

AVOCADO SOUP

• 3 tomatoes, deseeded and diced• 1 cup carrot juice• 3 cups coconut milk• 1⁄2 avocado • 2 tablespoons coriander• 2 tablespoons parsley• 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 2 teaspoons salt

Blend all ingredients together, pour in bowls and top with your favourite vegetables.

Ingredients & Method

Did you know that the avocado is one of the few fruits that contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fat, the good fat? Plus, it has nearly 20 vitamins and minerals, which makes it a good nutrient-dense food. Making avocado soup is thus a wonderful, nutritious choice for the whole family, especially in the winter. The great thing about this recipe is that it is easy to prepare and does not require much time. Not to forget that it is healthy and tasty too!

The Yoga Institute is a name which I was aware of. But I had the best experience ever when I attended full day workshop along with my staff. It was an eye-opener for each one of us. We enjoyed learning simple yet extremely effective Asanas and Pranayama. We relived our childhood when we played

games; it was the best recreation for us. Working non-stop never made us realize how important it is to take a break from hectic routine. The lush green

campus has enriching positive vibes, I feel like coming back. The Yoga Institute has denitely made a difference in our life. The freshness and the sweetness

of the taste of Satvik meals is unforgettable. I thank The Yoga Institute for providing us with a different aspect of life which was missing in our life.

The atmosphere of my workplace is very friendly and gives me a chance to interact with different kinds of people and everyone is free to express their opinion. We also receive great motivation from Hansaji and our seniors. I’m thankful to her as she has always energised my creativity and solved our issues. I see her as my mother, she is my inspiration. TESTIMONIAL

I am a one month TTC student at the Yoga Institute. I have known about the Yoga Institute through a friend and I am very glad I chose to have the course here. Indeed, the emphasis here is put on the history and philosophy of yoga as well as meditative and pranayama techniques. I actually suffer from arthritis and am able to follow the asanas classes at my own pace.

Everyone is so kind and comprehensive. Tips are also given to include yoga in our everyday life no matter how stressful it is. I highly recommend this place to practice yoga or follow a TTC.

I joined TYI for 7 day Health Camp in August 2019, not knowing what will become of me in mere 7 days. The rst of transformations was felt in the

karma yoga class. I felt as if one of the most nagging questions about dharma/ duty was answered in the simplest words to me. I realized I didn’t

choose the institute, the Institute chose me. The best part about the institute is it never forces you to think only in one direction, it encourages you to ask right questions, be with the questions and then enjoy the pure

joy of nding those answers for yourself. I have never felt so fortunate before. Gratitude ows effortlessly in me every day.

It's been a great journey to be a part of this splendid Institute, which teaches you all the real aspects of Yoga. When I rst came here, I didn't have much interest to be honest, but after spending a day here, I fell in love with all its people, atmosphere, surroundings, food and classroom environment. I have known so many beautiful souls here, all coming with a different story and Yoga means a lot to all of them. This institute taught me how to be independent, condent, and proud of who I am. I would want everyone who has a keen interest in Yoga to join this amazing and precious journey.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

JANUARY 2020 ISSUE

“If you want to achieve much, care not for life,

but if you care for life, you must not expect

to achieve much”

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

The Vedas reveal the unusual character and the deep insights of Yogis. Though the authors of the Vedas have remained unknown, they must have had highly cultured brains to perceive such supernormal thoughts. Even subsequent scriptures like the Upanishads and Darshanas describe the insights of Yogis on variety of subjects based on the pure observation of Nature and reconrm the story of their intuitional capacity.

Take for example, Kapila’s theory of Cosmogony, and his whole teaching known as Samkhya Philosophy is based on the “iron laws of Nature “. The minds of Yogis must have been highly concentrated minds; a stage much higher than our present stage of physical and mental planes. Consequently, they would see Reality face-to-face. They must have been able to control their inner activities and misleading perceptions to realise that ultimate Truth — that stage of higher Super Consciousness.

It is not only in India that we nd such higher type of Rishis, but also in other parts of the world where the Almighty has bestowed His light in humans. Hence the word “Yogis“ is not only applicable to Indian saints but to the saints of far off countries as well. Socrates, Mansur, Christ and others were also Yogis who realised the presence of God in every atom. It is after such realisation that the Yogi says....................”I AM GOD“.
