EDITOR’S NOTE

3 YOGASATTVA

Namaste,

Yoga is a way of life that empowers us to know our self better. Yoga has all the answers to the most profound and popular question - Who am I? Most of us live a life without even giving a second thought to this question. But yoga can help us get closer to the essence of who we truly are and to awareness of what is our duty. A true yoga sadhaka strives to travel inward to transform himself into the best version of self.

In this issue, Smt Hansaji says, once we know ourselves better, we can have a better relationship with our self and with the outside world too. And Dr Jayadeva’s wisdom enlightens us about our simple and divine qualities.

Our Honourable Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshiyari congratulates and honours The Yoga Institute on completion of 101 years of foundation and 25 years of teaching yoga for free at BMC schools.

Also, a renowned cardiologist throws light on how yoga, as a complementing therapy, can help a patient of Ischaemic heart disease through mental relaxation.

Let's open our hearts and make our lives better with Yoga!

PEARLS OF WISDOM

PEARLS OF WISDOM

Smt. Hansaji J. YogendraDirector, The Yoga Institute.

very person is different, everyone has their own unique

Epersonality. No two individuals are the same, neither externally nor internally nor eternally. Isn’t that the

reason why we are born alone and we die alone? Everyone has their own story, that is different from others. The way a person is brought up, the sanskaras that they have, their situations, their thought process, it all differs from person to person. Even a pair of twins don’t have the same life.

It is this uniqueness that makes a person what they are. For every individual, all you know about them is their present, what they are today. It is because of their past experiences and situations that result in their present. A little girl who has had a strict mother would have a different personality than a girl of the same age, but with a bed-ridden mother. It is only our habits, traits, circumstances, and thought processes that make us unique and special and we must accept it gracefully.

It is only when we have truly understood and realised this uniqueness in ourselves that we will be able to understand others in a better manner. The relationship with yourself sets the tone for every other relationship you have. So whenever you have to deal with others, you must keep this in mind. In this way, you won’t expect others to behave in a certain manner that suits you. That is just because no two people are the same and now you know that they have their own personality, which is different from yours.

Once you establish a good relationship with yourself, you will stop expecting things from others. All you can do is enjoy the present moment with them, no expectations, no demands. Try not to have any opinions, don’t get attached, leave no room for dualities, and keep the ego away by not imposing your ideas on

the other person. To have a healthy relationship with the self and with others, you must keep the Kleshas away while dealing with others. Just enjoy and live in the moment that you have in hand.

Always try to see the goodness in every individual, for all you know is just the surface of the personality, you don’t know the depth of it. Spend each and every moment with others joyfully and happily. Lend an ear to others but don’t judge their story. Instead, do something nice for them, something that would make them happy from the inside.

Just follow this basic discipline in life. First, have a better relationship with yourself, only then will you have a better relationship with the outside world. The more you value the uniqueness of others, the more your relationships will ourish.

Always remember, your other relationships only mirror the relationship you have with yourself.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP

YOUR SELF AND OTHERS

TO

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

Vandana Trivedi

Being part of a Yoga lineage that practises Householders’ Yoga, relationships can become an integral tool for self-growth. The inclusion of Yoga as a way of life can transform an ordinary life to an art of living extra-ordinarily, especially if one professes to ‘doing’ Yoga.

If one’s goal in life is self-development, then how about taking it into the realm of family, work, friends, etc.? How about accepting each conict as a challenge to clarify one’s own stand? Let’s take, for example, an argument between spouses, which can be the trickiest and stickiest of them all. If your spouse points out/criticises/blames you for something, ordinarily one would spring to one’s own defence. Yet, if one’s stand is self–development, then, can one see one’s ego rising to its own defence? Can one see also the other kleshas of Raga (attachment) and Dvesha (aversion) also rearing their ugly faces? Therein lies the litmus test of being ‘in the moment’ or, still better, being a witness - Saakshi bhava. This situation in fact shows us the mirror of how we are and how much we can accept the merit of our spouse’s observation. We have then in fact become able to diffuse a potentially volatile situation.

Few words of Dr. Jayadeva that I have heard him repeatedly utter - ‘the Ego’, ‘acceptance’ and ‘having a witness-like attitude’ - have stayed in the deep recesses of my mind and have played themselves out often (but certainly not as often as I would have liked to) in various situations of my life.

One can ask how this approach is valid for a parent who has to teach the child ‘the correct way’? As Dr J. would put it, if need be, you show the anger, but don’t become the anger!

Anybody can become angry - that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose and in the right way - that is not within everybody's power and is not easy, as Aristotle said.

To enjoy love, care, compassion, appreciation, praise, fun, laughter and joy that relationships can offer whenever they come our way and without craving for the same; to be able to see through the impermanence of all relationships, in that lies the practise and gift of Yoga!

Medical Questions and AnswersQuestion: Can Yogic practices and Yogic life help in case of a patient suffering from Angina Pectoris?

Question: Can a patent suffering from Ischaemic heart disease get well through Yoga?

Answer: As Angina pectoris is a type of Ischaemic heart disease, the following answer applies to both the questions.

Ischaemic heart disease is caused by rstly, a narrowing of the lumen of the coronary artery following a deposition of fat in the wall; secondly, a spasm of the coronary artery; and thirdly, clotting of blood, which may occur after a heart attack in many patients.

Yoga can help a patient of Ischaemic heart disease by preventing coronary artery spasm through mental relaxation; it can help as shown by the very latest research, by reducing cholesterol in the blood to around 200 mg, by causing regression of arteriosclerosis in the coronary arterial wall. There is now ample evidence proving beyond doubt that the regression of arteriosclerosis in the coronary artery occurs in six to twelve months if the cholesterol level is brought down to 200 mg or less. This has been concluded from the results of repeat coronary angiography in many patients.

Thus Yoga can help many patients of Ischaemic heart disease signicantly, including those of Angina pectoris.

Question: What is the cause of high blood pressure?

Answer: In the majority of cases, the exact cause of high blood pressure is not known. We know that the arteries are clogged and we have found that there are specic contributive factors for high blood pressure. Some of these are controllable and others are uncontrollable. For instance, heredity factors and age are uncontrollable factors. Controllable factors that affect blood pressure are diet, stress and tension, alcohol, smoking and the amount of exercise one does.

Question: How is it possible to avoid stress and tension in today’s life?

Answer: One way is to plan your life. Do also emotional planning. Learn to know that there are certain situations that can be changed and others that have to be accepted. Here perhaps Yoga could help to change attitudes and learn relaxation.

Question: What are the symptoms of high blood pressure?

Answer: Hypertension has been called an insidious condition as the symptoms are very vague in the beginning. In extreme hypertension, there may be slight headaches, dizziness, exhaustion, weakness. Many times, it is accidentally discovered in routine medical check-ups.

Question: Is alcohol in small quantities harmful in hypertension?

Answer: Alcohol is a poison for hypertension - and a poison is a poison even in small quantities.

Question: What is a low-cholesterol diet?

Answer: A diet that avoids butter, ghee, cheese, meat products, eggs, fats and sugar. Foods that are safe are vegetables, fruits, skimmed milk, daals and cereals. Palm oil, which has been recently encouraged by the government, is harmful as it is an hydrogenated oil.

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Khushbu Mangla hardly requires an introduction - she is one of those people almost everyone knows at the Institute, from the guards at the gate to the kitchen staff and her classmates in the 7 Months Teacher Training Course. An outgoing, friendly personality, Khushbu nds it easy to talk to people and nd common ground with everyone.

She credits her upbringing for instilling the right values in her - friendliness, lending a helping hand whenever she can and striving for excellence in whatever she does. Yet, it took The Yoga Institute to put a name to the philosophy behind what she was living. “My parents led a yoga-like, duty-bound life, placing value on discipline and routine,” she remembers.

A successful businesswoman with a background in advertising and media and starting her own import business from scratch, Khushbu could have gone on making and spending money but something did not ring true. She wanted to slow down and take a step back and after a failed relationship, she did just that and restarted her life.

A friend suggested she visit The Yoga Institute and as soon as Khushbu stepped through the gate, like so many people before her, she felt a different energy. “This is where I belong,” says Khushbu now with conviction, who is about to nish her TTC.

She has understood that she does not belong in the business world but that it is her dharma to focus on what comes naturally to her: helping others by sharing her own experiences, be it as an ex-cricketer who played at national level, a marathon runner or a generally health-conscious person. She credits her marathon coach in school with instilling in her to always be goal-oriented and to focus on herself and her achievements instead of comparing herself to others.

Now, she helps out other athletes, especially women, also footballers and people working out at the gym. They all agree that Khushbu is truly inspiring and motivating, not being deterred and losing her positivity even after a ligament injury has grounded her for a few months. “My coach taught me to make myself stronger rather than give in to negativity. If I can’t do asanas, I do pranayama,” she says and shares how much she enjoys and benets from the practice, which has helped keep her thyroid problem in check too.

After graduating from the Institute, Khushbu already has many plans, teaching at her sister’s school for one, who goes to a special school. And remembering the interactions with her grandparents who taught her so much, she also wants to do something for senior citizens. “If you are aware of your actions, you will know why you are here,” she concludes.

By Honourable Governor Shri Bhagat Singh Koshiyari

oga is the communion of the self with the supreme. I

Ywant to thank and congratulate Hansaji for spreading yoga so well that everyone present at the event was in

the state of Yoga. People present in the audience were keenly listening to all the lectures and not merely sitting and getting bored.

The material and technology that the West has provided is really commendable but India has a special place in this world that teaches us about Yoga and giving back to society. Be it poor or rich, we are taking from the society but what are we giving back to the society? This is exactly what Yoga teaches us.

If you ask anyone in this country be it literate or illiterate, everyone will be of the opinion that these worldly pleasures are temporary. There is something superior to this but we don’t know what. We will come to know about it only when we have some time and that time, we spend for Yoga and higher experiences.

The Yoga Institute has been working hard for 101 years to spread th is knowledge to householders, which is commendable. When I was taking a round of the campus, I felt peaceful vibrations. It is possible only because of constant

practice of yoga and Tapasya. Just like practice makes a man perfect, we should practice yoga every day and reach to the higher reality.

Our mind is not steady and for that when Maharishi Patanjali started describing Yoga, he rst wrote “Yoga chitta vritti nirodha,” which means controlling the mind by improving concentration is yoga. I feel the scientists are also yogis, because with concentration, they invent new things. And we all are very lucky that this age-old science of yoga is now accepted by the whole world with open arms.

Today, 180 countries celebrate 21st June as International Yoga Day. But just by giving lectures, Yoga will not reach everyone. It will reach by working hard just like The Yoga Institute is doing. I appreciate the efforts of Hansaji and Hrishiji and congratulate once again on this double celebration - the completion of 101 years and 25 years of teaching yoga for free at BMC schools.

I request one and all present here to work towards Yoga and I believe that we will be physically, mentally, and spiritually the ttest country. My best wishes to The Yoga Institute for providing this humble service and empowering people with Yoga.

YOGIC INSIGHTS

WHAT may appear ordinary and simple, acquires greater signicance when set in contrast to complicated and meaningless objects around. Simple qualities like purity, understanding, humility etc. may appear colourless to men of the world, but when contrasted to wicked and dehumanizing qualities in evidence all around us, the simple virtues assume a divine glow. Such simple qualities are but a few: to be fearless, to possess discipline, to be given to self study and to acquire knowledge thereof, to enjoy mental purity and peace, etc. But how meaningful and worthwhile they appear when we have a look at the way most of us function under fear, lack of discipline, extrovertism, confusion and disquietude etc.

Impure men who believe in the sensory world deny the existence of anything higher and give themselves to sensual pleasures. They are lled with insatiable cravings, they collect unjust possessions and have wrong means of livelihood. How often do we see ourselves and others acting aggressively as a result of limited understanding. Many believe pleasure as the sole motive of existence. To satisfy this craving for pleasure, they resort to violence. Such men do not believe in the absolute or in any higher authority. “I am God,” they will say. “ I did this and I will do that. I will straighten out those who are opposed to me.”

They go on raving like this and all the time their thoughts also move in the same groove, “I am perfect, I am strong, who is there like me?”; overpowered by ignorance, they actually feel proud of their achievements.

It is not surprising that men who are egoistic ultimately harm the world process, which is interrelated. They achieve their gains through unjust means. Such men remain constantly worried and mentally disturbed. These men are really sick persons, dragging others along with them. It is a well known fact that desires, anger and greed are the doors to hell.

The wise man believes in and lives according to higher laws. He respects the scriptures, he believes in philosophy and follows the ideal. What is enjoined in these wise writings is to be taken into account when one acts. The past experience of wiser persons is not for nothing. In the old scriptures, what is right and what is wrong action has been settled. So that one who prefers to live in a manner as contributes to his highest good, denite assistance and guidance become available. He from these can thus cultivate the simple but really divine qualities and avoid the demonical qualities described earlier.

Jai Hind College have been annually visiting The Yoga Institute for students one-day camps since 2007. This year was no exception and was totally power-

packed. Hansaji’s satsang was enlightening with a special message for students on going back to the dietary patterns of our ancestors, digital de-

addiction and living a value-lled satisfactory life. The instructor Ms. Puja with her team of volunteers made suryanamaskar fun and very easy for students.

Kriyas, pranayama along with bonding games added to the knowledge bank of students to build a moral and disciplined life. Sattvic food was relished by all.

Not a moment was unproductive. Easy relaxation techniques were the take back for students whereas a bag full of books, yoga mats, t-shirts and healthy

snacks was my take back. My love for the institute and insatiable desire to come back year after year is ever growing. I thank the entire staff of The Yoga

Institute for giving the very best to my students.

Jai Hind College

The Yoga Institute is a place where Yogic philosophy gets turned into practice, be it through asanas, pranayama, kriyas, attitude training or the application of Yogic concepts in everyday life. In other words: This is where life’s ups and downs nally start making sense. Lifting the veil of ego, attachment and fear, one feels a heavy burden taken off one’s shoulders, replaced by tranquility and a sense of balance. This is certainly true for my journey, when I opened the front gate for the rst time in 2015 to inquire which TTC may be best suited. I soon signed up for the 7 Day Camp, which left me wanting more, and then for the 2-Year-TTC, where I made wonderful friends who shared the experience and truly inspiring teachers who never hesitated to provide new (Sattvik) fodder for our enquiring minds. Dr. Jayadeva and Hansaji with their words of wisdom at Satsangs provided further insights. Completing the TTC was just a small step and having taken up the study of the Yoga Sutras next, I feel blessed and grateful to continue the journey. With much gratitude to everyone at The Yoga Institute.

TESTIMONIAL

The Yoga Institute is a school of Yoga that can be useful for people of many different paths and understandings of Yoga. I am grateful as this is the rst established institute I’ve enrolled to as it gave me such a sturdy foundation to keep working from. Although I might have had different expectations before coming, I have learned and grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined prior to attending this 3 Months TTC. If you feel the call to expand your understanding of Yoga, I suggest you come here. I wouldn’t trade the experiences I’ve had here for anything

My journey with Yoga began with The Yoga Institute, Mumbai. I was looking to evolve as a person and that is when I decided to give a try to Yoga - as a form of holistic development. My idea of Yoga was that it was a form of exercise to make your body exible. When I joined and as a few weeks passed by, I slowly started noticing the changes in my thoughts as well. I felt much more calm, content and

compassionate. Apart from asanas, we started with meditation, discourse, and satsang. Though I never attended any satsang, I am sure it has a profound

impact on people who are looking to make that change in their life. The vastness of the positive energy that ows in the Institute itself gave me a smile on my face.

There were days when I would just enjoy reading something sitting over there, listening to the birds chirping or simply the sound of planes passing by is

beautiful. The smile on people's faces, the tension of something bothering someone, senior citizens with health issues, people who wish to become yoga

teachers, all felt like a part of one large family.

My time at The Yoga Institute, Goa has been magical. As soon as I stepped onto the campus property, I knew I was at the right place. I got a really warm welcome by Rohan and Roveena. The property is very lively, full of lush greenery and spectacular wildlife. The teachers are very knowledgeable and passionate about the teachings of yoga. One thing that really stood out for me was the energy of the support staff. They were always very cheerful and helpful. The food and accommodation has been amazing I really wish I could just stay here forever. This place is very conducive for the study and practice of yoga. The training is really well structured and delivered. I am happy that I chose The Yoga Institute, Goa to do my 200RYT training and will recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about the classical Ashtanga Yoga.

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

FEBRUARY 2020 ISSUE

“The richness of life is painted in colours of love.

When you begin to love, you begin to live.”

Shri Yogendraji - Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance

It was my ambition even in the midst of the study of Yoga, especially of Hatha Yoga, when I was in the jungle, the Reality of such a science from which I derived what was inexplicable.

I know not how Nature disclosed her secrets to me, but I found knowledge pouring in succession like a waterfall. My hands were too small to contain it, and I feared, perhaps with all this, I may lose the chance of having a draught.I cried....I struggled and extended my empty hands - I found some scattered drops, my palm is again as I give them.

But it is my satisfaction that, instead of passing my life in the jungle, obscure and lonely, by some unknown inspiration, I have come out to reveal to the public what I felt is the truth about this science. I have found that is is not a philosophy that is dry with theories, but on the contrary, it is full of richness with vivid practices for the attainment of self-realisation.

For revival of such a master-science, I take it as my duty in the interest of the public and hence this small book - Outlines of Yoga, Vol. I, as an introduction to the science of Yoga proper. Vol. II will treat the metaphysical part of this great science.

Shri, Yogendraji, Versova, March 1919
