EDITOR’S NOTE

3 YOGASATTVA

Namaste,

Diwali, the festival of lights, brings with it beacon of hope for the entire human race, symbolizing the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". With the festive spirit all around, this time of the year is celebrated with excitement and enthusiasm. However, this year, with the ongoing pandemic, it is essential to lay additional emphasis on mindfully following social distancing and hygiene protocols for safe festive celebrations.

This month, The Yoga Institute also celebrates the 124th Birth Anniversary of our Founder, Shri Yogendraji. We are deeply grateful to him for illuminating the path Yoga and making it accessible for millions. Referred as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance, he has been responsible for reviving the practice of asanas, pranayamas and kriyas for the common man and making Yoga accessible to people other than renunciates.

Smt. Hansaji shares more about practical and effective Life Lessons from our beloved Founder, in this issue. Also in an excerpt from an interview, Shri Yogendraji clearly states that ‘Yoga teaches you how to live and enjoy life.’ On that note, let us commit to Yoga way of lifestyle and realize it to the fullest.

Wishing you all a very Happy Diwali!

Stay healthy and joyful!

PEARLS OF WISDOM

ounder was a magnicent man with a vibrant personality.

FRight from a young age, he was very clear with his intentions. He knew exactly what he wanted to do, and

once he xed his aim in mind, he would ensure to get it done. He had a very highly developed intellect which was different from the bookish knowledge. Sure, he knew about the Indian Texts like Vedas and Upanishads but he always looked at every knowledge in a practical manner. He believed in looking at things in a scientic manner, and how we can use all the information in practicality.

One thing that we must all learn from Founder is to never settle for anything in life. Never fall into the loop of ‘make-belief’. Always keep nding the purpose behind whatever you do, don’t do it simply because you have to do it. Keep nding the real reason behind things, and keep gaining experience. Founder always believed in doing all his work himself. Unless we do something while guring out the purpose behind it, how will we ever learn something out of it and try to do it in a better manner?

Even though he did believe in God and that there is some higher reality who is running the show, I have never seen him asking something from God. In fact, I clearly remember him saying this, “Even if God comes in front of me, I won’t ask him anything. In fact, I would say that God you do your work and let me do my work.” He was never of the opinion that we must ask something from God, then it becomes like a business or a transaction, “God you give me this, and I will give you 11 coconuts.” Founder always believed in self-development and self-improvement on your own merits and capabilities.

Founder’s only aim was to simplify yoga and take it to the masses and householders. He simply wanted to demystify the complicated and make it uncomplicated and easy to understand for the layman. The householders were any which way pressed on time, having so many responsibilities to look after. Founder wanted to give them practical solutions to lead a healthy, t, and holistic life with easy to understand Yogic techniques. I remember when I came to The Yoga Institute as a student to do my Teachers Training Course. At that time it was a 6 months course, and Founder had dedicated each month to one limb of

Yoga. Month one would be to learn and practice the Yamas, month two would be for Niyamas, and so on. He wanted the students to practice what they are learning, only then would a piece of knowledge be termed useful.

One thing that I believe everyone must learn from him is that he was always focused, fearless and straightforward. In fact, nobody dared to argue with him. I think we must all have this level of focus and fearlessness when we want to achieve something. Even while constructing the ofce building for The Yoga Institute, he stood his ground to get the steel from the ofcials, even though they denied to give it to him as they thought it wasn’t essential. He took it upon himself to explain to the ofcials that Yoga is always going to be essential. Yoga is our culture and it is the most important thing that we Indians must have and shouldn’t let it go, otherwise, it would take us towards a negative direction.

Founder truly cared a lot about India and its culture. He always propagated Yoga as a way of life. He brought Yoga to the common man in a very simplied manner. In fact, he has given rhythm and breath to the yogic techniques, and has brought about a holistic approach towards teaching Yoga. Little surprise then that Shri Yogendra is known as the Father of Modern Yoga Renaissance. We must pick up as many good qualities as we can from such personalities and turn them into life lessons, that would only help us be a better person.

FROM THE TEACHER’S DIARY

(Timeline 6th Dec 1976, 2 PM)

It was easy to do Yogendra Nishpandabhava,

in the yoga center, on Rue/Street Nagib Hadid,

downtown Beirut, in the old Arab quarter.

It was easy to listen to the staccato

of the Doshka heavy machine gun,

or the swoosh of the artillery above head…

As usual Harish lay on his bed for siesta

Least expecting the impending doom.

He listens to BBC radio, and it says

that the leftists, will make a push towards

Rue Nagib Hadad, and attack the rightists.

Suddenly an inner voice says rmly, “leave”

Not knowing the source of this voice

Harish continues to lie down

And the inner voice now commands - “Leave at once”.

Hurriedly Harish collects his Sutra and Gita book,

His passport and bottle of water,

and runs to protect himself under a staircase.

In seconds a missile hits the yoga center

and reduces it to rubble.

Next Scene

Many a new moon later, Harish returns

to TYI, and his guru beckons him to tell his tale

of the attack on his yoga center in Beirut.

Harish tells him in detail and asks, “Sir, whose voice was it that

asked me to leave my bed at once?”

“It was your soul”, says Yogendraji.

THE LANGUAGE OF THE SOUL

Harish then requested Yogendraji to speak about the soul, and how does one know it was the soul that was speaking..

“His message is like a telegram, brief, there is no repetition of instructions,” said the Guru.

“We generally do not know the language he will speak in.

It could be symbolic language, it could be a metaphor, it could be in the form of a parable; mysterious and mystic are his ways,” added the guru.

..

“Because of the inner and incessant noise of the brain-mind, we cannot hear him. Learn to be silent…maintain antar mauna to listen to him,” he concluded.

ou must have felt the butteries in your stomach when

Yyou get nervous and these sensations suggest that your brain and gut are connected. Recent studies show that

your brain affects your gut health and your gut health may even affect your brain health. So we must understand the links between digestion, mood, health and even the way we think.

Our body is made up of billions and trillions of cells and all these cells are functioning to keep us alive. These cells need energy to perform their function, and this energy comes from the food we eat. The digestive system in our body provides food and this food not just provides nutrition, but it also affects our mind. In fact, food has a strong impact on our mind.

All the cells in our body are performing specic functions and their activity needs to be coordinated to have an internal balance in the body. The nervous system is one of the systems that controls and coordinates throughout the body, and it communicates through nerve cells. So nerves are basically responsible for carring messages from one part of the body to another part and our brain is a part of the nervous system, which acts as a central computer.

Interestingly our gut or digestive tract is known as the second brain, technically known as enteric nervous system. There are more than 100 million nerve cells in the walls of the digestive system, lining our food pipe, stomach, intestines etc.

Our gut is connected to the brain through nerves and this connection is known as the gut-brain-axis. The vagus nerve is one of the biggest nerves, which connects the brain and gut; it sends signals in both directions. So we can say our two brains talk to each other. If we have stress, it affects our digestion and if we have digestive issues, it affects our mental health. That's why sometimes doctors do counselling for patients, looking for ways to soothe thei r second brain and prescr ibe antidepressants not because they think the problem is there in the patient’s head, but because these medications can calm the symptoms in some cases by acting on nerve cells in the gut.

In fact, research says that the digestive system activity may affect the thinking skills and memory too. So lListen to the signals your body is giving you if you are experiencing a digestive issue like acidity or constipation, maybe it is related to your state of mind. You might be able to improve your gut health by addressing your mental health. So bring awareness to your body, mind and breath.

Most digestive problems are psychosomatic and occur due to faulty lifestyles. The good news is that all these problems are easily manageable through diet modications, lifestyle changes and exercises.

Follow yoga as a way of life, which includes our food, thoughts, our interaction with the environment, relaxation, recreation etc.

Yoga looks at food not only as a source of nutrition but also its effect on the state of mind. You are what you eat. Having sattvik food, which is light and easily digested, balances our mind. Avoid processed and stale food, which creates dullness. Also avoid coffee, alcohol and spicy food, which brings agitation.

Drink plenty of water.

Learn to relax, take out time for yourself. Every individual has an innate ability to relax, we only have to learn how to relax.

Yogendra Pranayam IV (Diaphragmatic breathing) is an excellent technique to improve the vagal tone - our nerve for the regulation of several body compartments at rest - and helps improve the connection between brain and gut.

Yoga Asanas aim at toning and strengthening the nervous system. Abdominal compression asanas like pawanmuktasana and yoga mudra help in strengthening the abdominal organs.

Most importantly, we must learn to manage our thought process, by cultivating positive thoughts, as the root cause of almost all the problems arise from our mind.

YOGA TECHNIQUE OF THE MONTH

Yogendra Pranayam II - Intercostal Breathing

8 YOGASATTVA

Method of Practice

Starting Position

1. Stand (or sit as mentioned above with your hands on your knees) erect with your feet about one-foot distance apart, hands at the sides. Keep your shoulders relaxed.

2. Keep your gaze xed on a point ahead of you or you may choose to keep your eyes closed if you are able to stand steady.

Steps

3. Place your hands gently on the ribs as shown in the picture, ngers in the front, facing each other, and your thumbs behind.

4. As you inhale fully, your chest will expand laterally and during exhalation, the chest contracts. The intercostal muscles expand and relax. Keep the count of inhalation and exhalation the same/equal using a comfortable ratio that suits you. There is no retention or suspension of the breath.

5. Be aware of using only the intercostal muscles and avoid the use of the clavicular or abdominal muscles.

6. Practise about 4-5 rounds of this.

Benets

TRANSFORMATION THROUGH YOGA

Ramendra Jagtap - Ramendra Sir as he is fondly called - is one of the most loved teachers of The Yoga Institute, always smiling and teaching asanas with great knowledge, strength and humour. Few would believe that behind the happy face is a man who battled with alcoholism for many years.

“I’ve lied that my mother has cancer and collected money to buy alcohol. Alcohol was everything to me. I’ve robbed, cheated, sold blood just to drink alcohol. There was no limit to it. I’ve drank petrol, eaten Vicks on bread, and enjoyed being in that state of mind,” recalls Ramdendra.

After even hitting his own mother, being in police stations more than out and people changing the side of the road just to avoid him, family and friends suggested he try yoga. So on 26th November 1990, almost 30 years to the day, Ramendra joined TYI’s special class.

“In front of Dr. Sahab and Hansa Maa, I acted decent,” he remembers. “Talking to Dr. Sahab was a great experience but at the back of my mind, addiction was overpowering me. I did the 7 Day Health Camp and later, Hansa Maa asked me to enroll for the 7 Months Teachers’ Training Course.”

All seemed well but then Holi rolled around - the joyful Festival of Colours being an excuse for many to enjoy excesses. Even Ramendra started drinking again. “I would often think ‘how will

they change me, it is impossible’. My condition worsened, I wanted to live but couldn’t, I wanted to die but couldn’t. My liver was so damaged, I couldn’t do anything.”

The turning point came when Ramendra re-joined The Yoga Institute in 2005, this time to stay. He did the 7-Day Health Camp once again and with support from Hansa Maa, joined the 7 Months TTC. “Hansa Maa gave me an opportunity to take asanas class, which kept me distracted from my addiction and it was a stepping stone towards me becoming a better and a responsible person,” he recalls.

The regular physical exercises, the TYI environment and the responsibility of teaching a class nally motivated Ramendra to stay on course and kick his addiction for good, proving that sometimes, it takes more than one attempt to nd the right path. It is just important to keep trying. “I’ve been successfully managing my 33 years of Indian Railways service along with teaching yoga, all thanks to Hansa Maa for always motivating me. She has been a guiding force in my life.”

He shares his story with his students and anyone who asks to give hope to others. Rather than being ashamed of who he was, Ramendra embraces and accepts the journey he has been on. “My past is my strength. I’m here at all because of Hansa Maa and the positive vibes of this place. Also, if anyone asks me to drink, I politely tell them ‘Kumbhaka karo, you’ll feel the same effect’.

Question: Is it possible to achieve enlightenment with the help of the teacher?

Answer: 01 Self-realisation can be obtained with or without the help of the teacher. It all depends on the intellectual level of the student. If a student has passed the early or preliminary stages of spiritual growth, working with a teacher will not be desirable for not only has he experienced the same routine but he has also

developed his own ideas and thoughts.

There are some people who require a Guru to explain things to them because they do not have the intellectual calibre of those people I mentioned earlier. These people require steady contact with their teacher. Unfortunately the modern teacher is secretive, he has the desire to keep something back from the students to establish his superiority. The student as a result gets

confused, having not received the answers he was searching for. He then meets other teachers to elicit their opinions, reads numerous books to get information and nally gets so confused that he loses even what he has gained. This is, unfortunately, the situation at present.

Question: Can you describe for us your rst meeting with Madhavadasji and the transformation of personality that resulted thereafter?

Answer: My personal experience would not be a very good example as I have, right from my childhood, been very rational and enjoying independent thought. I would weigh things when I received them and decide for myself how much to accept. So I did not follow blindly the path of my teacher. I accepted the technology taught by him, practised it accordingly, under his supervision, perfected it to his satisfaction. As far as philosophy, technological, social and general aspects were concerned, I had differences of opinion with him and therefore never entered the temple even though he was a Bhakta; I never chanted any hymn or Mantra even though he was Mantra yogi. When I was 16, I had read through the Upaniṣads, the Brāhamaṇas and was fairly conversant with older thinking. I found satisfaction from my own reasoning and so did not allow any other authors to impose their thoughts on me. I have, in fact, not permitted that in my life. I did not take things for what they were or for what they are. I tried to analyse why things happened in certain ways. This discrimination was a part of me from my early childhood. I was too conscious without the prejudice of religion or tradition. I was thus able to guard myself against all the orthodox speech and behaviour patterns that came my way. I do things exactly. Very few people have this habit, they are continually forced to do things or pressurised to do them. Even in my early childhood, right from the age of three, everything I did was because I wanted to do it.

Question: What state of mind can a Mantra create? Should a Mantra always be taken from a Guru?

Answer: Mantra should not be selected by an individual; it should be accepted from the teacher. There is a scientic explanation for the Mantra. The Synchronisation process is in play here. Whenever there is synchronisation there is unity. In Mantra chanting when it reaches a point where it becomes monotonous one loses interest, the vibration of the sounds then unite together to affect you. So a man who says that when he walks down the road he hears a Mantra in his mind, is actually engrossed in it and his mind changes its character. It is then that Mantras evolve.

Question: Do you mean that people who have not experienced it cannot attain fullment by chanting their own names?

Answer: The real Mantra is to be oneself. The highest category is that there should be no sound; they chose ‘Om’ which is the natural outcome of the voice. The only Mantra that is universal is ‘Om’. It is the sound that comes on its own. Patanjali accepted only that Mantra which should be repeated.

Question: What are the differences that you see between the ancient education system and today’s?

Answer: The primary purpose of the ancient system of education was self-evolution. While that of today is self-promotion. Before, the system propagated the study of oneself, awareness of oneself. A man was obsessed with knowing who he is. The body was not him because it belonged to him. That was the original spiritual perspective. Now instead of this purpose they begin to mix their own personal, limited ideas. They look at things from their own point of view and try to understand Good according to their own process.

Modern parents want their sons to be intelligent and competent. Their son’s success makes them famous and wealthier. These are the selsh considerations of education. In earlier times parents wanted their children to be cleverer than them. There was no selshness or small-mindedness in education. The education of ancient times was not at the sole level of economy as it today’s education, but at all levels.

Question: What is your view on marriage?

Answer: In married life selshness does not work because you lose your partner’s affection. When there is a give and take there is continued harmony. When one fails in spirit, inspiration is available from the other side, so the balance is maintained. That is why married life is more successful than that of an individual living by himself. But the wrong understanding of married life has led to selshness, exploitation of each other and the urge to get the maximum from each other. In the case of social structure one has no independence. In the community there are certain rules laid down which one has to follow. The liberty of modern education can disturb the social structure and individual relationship.

Question: Have you come across any real disciples?

Answer: They are not up to the mark because they are still under the inuence of their inheritances. They should become natural and live according to their situation. In Yoga, when they teach or practice it, their ambitions get in the way of their dealings with rich and poor people. In my case I attended to everybody equally, never making any difference between the rich and poor.

Besides this equality of status, knowledge must be given to people according to their pre-realisation requirements. A real Guru understands the level of his student and teaches him accordingly. Our ancients were very strict about who the disciple is to receive knowledge.

Question: What is the difference between a religious teacher and a spiritual one?

Answer: The way to live is taught by the spiritual teacher. He makes you live by working hard and teaching you the technology of living. Yoga teaches you how to live and enjoy life.

BROADLY speaking, the three constituents of citta (personality-complex) Satva, Rajas and Tamas (intelligibility, energy and inertia) which constitute it, become responsible f o r i t s smo o th a n d continuous functioning. They also determine the p e r s o n a l i t y t y p e s , according to as one or the other of them is in predominance.

For example, the inert aspect of our personality which tends to laziness, inac t iv i ty, du l lness , s t u p i d i t y e t c . i s respective and retentive in nature. It is a stagnant, s t a t i c s t a t e w h i c h preserves itself. In fact, in the yoga thinking, this inert aspect is the store-house of memory. It provides the fuel that burns into our conscious states. Such a memory is not always an advantage, because the memory which is full of past subconscious impressions has strong feeling tones around itself. These become cravings, which in suitable circumstances affect our behaviour.

When we see a dull or a stupid person, we may beware of him, because he is like an alarm clock that will surely set off near or distant future (time) and create a din. He is in possession of strong tendencies which are lying dormant, and are seeking an appropriate situation for expression. No doubt, such an individual takes a long time before he becomes a t student of Yoga.

The citta is a plastic substance, which has the characteristic of assuming the form of any object it perceives. The mind casts itself into different manifestations or moulds. Such moulds of the mind - like the convulsion of the brain folds - are derived from avidyā. Basically, they are in the nature of cravings (vāsanā) and hence they are being called structural defects of our thinking principle.

The other constituent of our personality is the energy principle which makes for a lot of activity. This constituent does not provide for steadiness of the mind. It does also not provide for knowledge and understanding. It is the active aspect, and is useful in building up c o n c e n t r a t i o n . Acquisition of wealth, display of power etc. are its areas of operation. This is the directive side of our ego.

The third constituent, and the most important c o n s t i t u e n t o f o u r personality complex, is purity, perspicuity and intelligibility. This is the

mirror-like clarity of our mind. It can reect, both our awareness into the external world, and the external world into awareness. It is this aspect of our mind that provides for knowledge, understanding and experience. Cosmic intelligence is the source.

All efforts in yoga are towards correcting the perverted mind to establish it to its norm - sattwa. The persons, who possess a preponderance of clarity, are the best students of yoga, because such minds are steady, are concentrated, are full of knowledge and enlightenment and are also able to free themselves from contacts and involvement with material life.

We see here how, there is much sense in the yoga way of understanding our mind-citta, specially from the point of the three guṇas. This approach helps the student of yoga in realising the relative strength and weakness of the guna constituents. One cannot possess a personality which is just made up of one constituent or the other. The constituents will always be together, one in greater strength and the other in lesser strength. To a great extent, our own past decides which constituent of these is to assume greater prominence in our life.

TESTIMONIAL

Dr. Purvaja SamelExecution and Operations, MyCare Health Solution Pvt Ltd.

The Yoga session was very interactive and useful for all the attendees and for me as well. The teacher from The Yoga Institute did her best of explaining and demonstrating yoga asanas. The one hour that was allocated got over too quickly and we wanted more of the session. The session was completely refreshing.

I am proud to be working with The Yoga Institute. First, I used to work in a marketing company where the work pressure was high and job satisfaction less. Now it has been almost two years that I have been working here with peace. The work atmosphere is full of positive vibes and it feels like home. I

got to learn many things from Smt. Hansaji and I am still learning. She is a perfect inspiration to many. Each and every one associated with the Institute is caring and helpful. The Yoga Institute is a

place full of fresh oxygen supplied by homegrown Ayurvedic plants and trees and sattvic meals to keep us healthy. What else could we want? I must say I’m lucky to work here. “Yoga takes you into

the present moment, the only place where life exists”, I’m having such a life!

It is a very specic course designed for breast cancer survivors. Sir has included all the asanas, pranayamas, diet, meditation and relaxation postures that help in building immunity and are good for the lymphatic system. There are certain asanas in hatha yoga, regular yoga that can harm the body of a cancer survivor. In this course I learnt the asanas that are safe for me. I am feeling very good and positive towards the recovery. Thanks to Dharmesh Sir, Pooja Ma'am and The Yoga Institute. I would recommend it to breast cancer survivors.

Coming to the Yoga Institute has been a life-altering experience! Its heritage as the oldest organized Yoga training institute in the world and its holistic approach to Yoga prompted me to start with a ‘7

Day Insights into Yoga’ camp. The focus on the eightfold path of Ashtanga Yoga started showing its impact early, the mind felt more relaxed and the added clarity only motivated me more to continue my

journey further in the form of a 7 Months TTC. What sets the Institute apart is the academic and spiritual focus to learning Yoga not limited to asanas alone. The masters Dr Jayadeva Yogendra and

Smt Hansaji make daily appearances leading discourses on Yoga as a way of life, every word they say are pearls of wisdom they have handpicked from their decades of practicing Ashtanga Yoga.

Some of the teachers/facilitators advising the students have been practicing, teaching at the Institute for over 20-30 years, and the Institute attracts students from all over the world, making it a truly

global center of learning. Learned so much in the rst month and it only strengthens the resolve to learn evermore, in the words of Dr Jayadev 'When the mind is clear like still water, insight into the

true meaning of life is gained'!

TESTIMONIAL

During the 3 months of my TTC from The Yoga Institute, I watched myself transform like never before. Our teachers told us that Yoga is the science of total transformation and they were 100% correct. Every single lecture was very profound, and all the teachers are so knowledgeable. They have a way of ensuring that the concepts make a home in your head and your heart. Hansa Ma’s parisamvad sessions were completely life changing for my physical and mental health as well as my interpersonal relationships. The course was truly worth it and is taught by a faculty that gently and lovingly guides you on this beautiful path. I am grateful to the Institute, Hansa Ma and every single teacher who helped shape me and mould me at the end of these three months.”

FOUNDER, SHRI YOGENDRAJI

YOGASATTVAMONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF THE YOGA INSTITUTE, INDIAOLDEST ORGANISED YOGA CENTRE IN THE WORLD

NOVEMBER 2020 ISSUE

“True home is not the house we live in,

it is rather a place that our feet

may leavebut not our hearts.”

Shri Yogendraji -

The continuation of this mental effort (dhāraņā) to concentrate on a xed point is meditation or dhyāna. When the duration of concentration is prolonged in the same line of thought, contemplation naturally follows. The English words contemplation, meditation, etc., do not fully express the meaning of the word dhyāna. It is an unbroken ow of realization of the object which is dhyāna. Or rather, speaking more scientically, it is the magnifying process of the object in the light of self-consciousness after the object has been xed that forms the main activity of this stage.

Concentration is the process of determining a particular object out of many, while dhyāna is the maintenance of the same object to the exclusion of other vibrations for a considerable length of time. Here the senses, instead of analyzing the objects by themselves and thus using the energy of the mind, combine and form a powerful focus and with the mind at their head enter into the reality of the object. In dhyana, the object of concentration presents itself in reality and the ultra-conscious mind directly perceives it. According to psychology of consciousness, when the soul-cells are once properly placed under rhythmic vibrations, the same vibrations if not disturbed produce a deeper state in that particular condition. Whether it be some abstract state or a purely conscious one, it makes no difference, so far as the duration of the process is concerned. It all depends on the totality of the object in the mind and the capability of the man who receives the vibrations.
