Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony

Friday, May 6, 2016

12 p.m.

Details:

The City of Carmel would like to invite you to attend the 2016 City of Carmel’s

Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony on May 6th, at Noon at Booth Tarkington Theatre -

Three Center Green in Carmel. 2016 Speaker: Tibor Klopfer - Second Generation. Title

of presentation — “One Family’s Experience". His parents, Manci and Michael Klopfer

were from Hungary and were imprisoned in concentration camps in Poland and

Germany. In July of 1944, his mother was deported from a rural ghetto in Hungary to

Auschwitz-Birkenau. Five weeks later, she was taken to a slave labor camp at Guben.

Late in the winter, as Soviet troops advanced toward Guben on their way to Berlin,

German solders forced Manci and others to leave Guben by foot. His father lost all of

his immediate family, including his first wife and two young daughters. He spent much of

the war in Hungarian and German forced labor camps. His presentation of his family’s

experiences puts human faces on historical events and opens the door to a

comprehension of the Holocaust and World War II history that goes beyond sterile

renditions of dates, events and statistics.

Yom HaShoah /Holocaust Memorial Services with Jack Pariser

Friday, May 6, 2016

8 – 9 p.m.

Details:

Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Memorial services will be led by Rabbi Rachlis and Cantor

Braier with University Synagogue member, Julie Metz, playing the theme to Schindler’s

List on the violin. Each year this service is haunting with the prayers recited rather than

chanted and the only music is Shoah-related.

Holocaust survivor, educator and scientist, Jack Pariser, will speak on “From a Nine

Year Old Sub-Person to a Preclude Genocide Activist.” Jack Pariser was born in 1929

in Poland, south of Krakow. When the Nazis began terrorizing Jews in 1939, his

grandfathers were beaten to death for refusing to walk on the Torah. In early August

1942, Mr. Pariser’s mother learned that the Germans were planning to murder the

town’s Jews the next day, and the family fled, hiding for months in the forest.

They were rescued by a Christian who had worked for Mr. Pariser’s father and were

hidden in a bunker under a woodshed floor. When they eventually moved to another

hiding place they were betrayed and arrested by Polish police. They escaped from jail

by cutting through a wall with a pen knife and were again protected by non-Jews until

the war ended in 1945.

The family moved to the United States in 1949, and Mr. Pariser went on to become

chief scientist at Hughes Aircraft, from where he retired in 1987. He has supervised the

collection of over 150 Holocaust victims’ video interviews. Sponsored by Tom and

Andra Ellingson.
